Tissue paper dissolves much better for me than rice or deli paper. I use the kind that stays strong when it's wet. Love this video and the concept of black and white with a pop of color. Thanks!!!
I discovered it works perfectly over lighter color, just not black. I have fallen in love with this deli paper. I've tried others and didn't like them.
i've bought deli paper from amazon & a grocery store. both were less transparent than tissue. i like tissue paper from the dollar tree. it disappears when glued down, no matter what glue i use.
I discovered since I made this video that on most colors other than black this deli paper is very transparent. I also use Dollar Tree tissue and it isn't transparent enough for me. Maybe the dollar store near me has different paper. This was the first video where I used the deli paper. Since then I have fallen in love with it. Thanks for your feedback.
Just a suggestion about the deli paper…while it‘s still wet you can carefully scrape away the part that stands out too much with a craft knife. It can be a bit tedious but it works..😊
As a collage artist, I suggest using rice paper rather than deli paper. Deli paper has a shiny and a flat side and the shiny side is what keeps a sandwich from leaking through so it isn't going to absorb as well. Another thing that works for me is tearing a shape rather than cutting. A torn edge will "disappear" much better than a hard edge (which you get when you cut). You can try some cut rice paper - still should disappear better than deli paper.
Since doing this video I've come to love the deli paper. I found one that is perfect. I do use rice paper but the transparency I get with the deli paper is wonderful.
Isn't it wonderful that as artists we are all different? Our works show our hearts and what we use comes together in beauty. Thanks for sharing what works for you!@@SusanCliftonArtist
Let me pass on a handy tip. If you want to tear collage pieces for a soft edge but also want to determine the shape approximately, draw the shape on the back of the paper with a wet paintbrush. Wait ten seconds and the paper will tear easily along the wet line. Sorry I can't remember the RUclips channel this came from. It works.
I know I'm late to the party but medical exam paper is fabulous. However you need to spray it with a bit of water first before applying the medium. Jackie Bernardi has wonderful videos on using it. Also teabag paper 📃 is a good option, not as good as medical exam paper but good.
You are a wonderful artist with a talent to share your process in an understandable and inspiring way. Thank you for guiding this newbie get some traction using this medium. You are the best!!!
Even though deli paper doesn’t disappear like tissue, it adds another texture to this piece over the black. In many cases, it would bother me as well but, I like it in this composition. It reminds me of how encaustic work looks!💕🇨🇦
I have tired to purchase and it was out of stock. But I love the inexpensive deli paper I'm now using. So the investment of wet strength tissue will probably wait until I am making more money here on RUclips. Thanks for watching.
I think this piece is beautiful!. Deli paper usually shows up more when its on top of dark colors. If it bothers you, you could cover with black paint over the dark areas where it shows 😃
Very nice to watch you making decisions. As for the transparency, I just viewed a RUclips video where the artist shows the transparencies of various papers for collage. Sally Hirst. It is helpful.
I'm enjoying reading all these comments about using papers. Some artists use medical exam table paper and say it's great. I haven't tried it but I hope you try it someday and let us know what you think.
You explain things so well. Great work Susan. Just wondering if you could erase the deli paper over the dark places by painting over it with black acrylic or ink. Blessings from Jayna from Down Under 🧡🌻
I’m sure I can but since this a paper collage created just as an exercise, I won’t bother. When I’m working on wood or canvas it could generate a sale and be worth spending the extra time. 😎
Thanks for the interest in the stencils. They are my own and will be soon be for sale on my site. When I release them I will do a video. Also thanks for watching.
Ich finde es wunderschön und würde es einrahmen und aufhängen. Deli Papier is nicht so transparent als Reispapier aber mich stört es nicht. Grüße aus Deutschland
Add wet strength tissue , because it holds a lot of paint and it's also see through .my name is Linda Bailey from Corpus Christi Texas , it cost more but it's worth it and it doesn't tear as easy as regular tissue paper , and it works the same it's called Carnival wet strength tissue paper ,my name is !Linda Bailey from Corpus Christi Texas wish you well !
I tried that but it's not as good as the deli paper. The deli paper only shows over very dark colors like black. This was my first time using it and I didn't realize that. Now I love it and use it often.
In my experience, deli paper is never very transparent when applied over dark papers. Tissue paper is better, but even that shows over dark papers. If you really want the paper not to show over dark background papers you have to cut out the shapes. If someone has found a solution, I really would like to know! 😅
I've seen others that have had great experience with deli paper but they do warn it matters what kind. I will say this is great paper to have around to clean the plate. LOL
Hi Susan, if you spray the back of your deli paper or exam paper with a bit of water it makes it more transparent for some reason. 😊
Hi Glynis - Is this right before glue it down? Thanks!
I'll try that. I found it's only a problem if I'm pasting over back.
Interesting to see your thought process in action. Thanks for sharing

I learned so much from this video. As an artist new to collage it was super helpful to me. Thank you
You're welcome

Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I’m needing that right now. Thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing. I love to see other artist's processes... you never know what you might learn.
Amen!!! ❤
So true. I spend a lot of time watching other artists create. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing this. I love the symmetrical aspect and the pops of red against the black and white.
Thanks for watching.
I like wet strength tissue, it seems to disappear better than deli paper.
I love the way it came out!
Thanks! 😎
👏👏👍Hello Susan! Thank you for Share & Inspiration!🌸🌸🌸 Many greetings from Austria!
Thank you so much!
Very striking. Can't wait to try my hand at this. Cheers..from British Columbia, Canada
Hi Pauline. Let me know if you do. Welcome.

Thanks. I hear that some brands are transparent. I have found that one yet
I love this piece. :). With regards to the deli paper - I would use wet strength tissue paper instead ❤

Thank you so much 😀

I've thought of that. I do like the strength of the paper. But I like the tissue paper for a more transparent effect. I thought it was worth a try. 😎
This was so enjoyable to watch. I've seen many collage tutorials, but this one really helped me, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! I wonder if anyone ever did a study on how art helps with decision making in life. Lol.
Love your experiments and colors. You are so honest and generous with your time
Thanks for watching.
So super, love it 😃
Thank you 🤗

Since this video I've found a great deli paper I like. Looks great over other papers.
Can you link to the better deli paper please?
That’s beautiful!
Thanks so much.

Yes, I want to try that. I will get to it eventually. Thanks for reminding me.
Very cool!
Thanks
Very nice. Thank you for sharing 😊🎨
My pleasure 😊

Hi Susan. Thank you - I enjoy your videos! I'm curious about that grid you taped your working piece to. Is it a cutting mat or something else?
Yes it’s a cutting mat. Blue and white on one side and the reverse on the other side.
I found one at My Binding. And a coupon for it is July20
What paper are you using for all the printed pieces?
I think these were all rice paper except for the one transparency one. The was deli paper.
Would you share the name of stencils you’ve used in this piece?
Thanks for the interest in the stencils. They are my own and will be soon be for sale on my site. When I release them I will do a video. Also thanks for watching.

Hi Linda! I will eventually try that. Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you share what kind of tape I can use that will not tear my paper when it is removed?
I use frog tape. I get it from Lowe’s or Home Depot but I recently saw it at blick. It’s a painter’s tape.
I have found that I’d I run a heat gun or blow dryer over the tape, it keeps the tape from tearing the paper when you peel it off.
Medical exam table paper goes more transparent than all the rest of the translucent papers.
I tried that but it's not as good as the deli paper. The deli paper only shows over very dark colors like black. This was my first time using it and I didn't realize that. Now I love it and use it often.
the deli papers i've bought don't "disappear as well as tissue paper.
Mine too. I think if it's too waxy it shows. There are some brands that work but I haven't found it yet.
