  • In this Gelli printing session I didn't have a plan. I was looking for inspiration and started out at a used bookstore. That lead to printing on book pages. I did a patchwork of colors on the book pages and then tried an experiment with cardboard. The pages ended up in a collage, so I guess it was a successful session. I had fun. And that is always a sign of success to me.

I use Murphys soap , half water and half soap , you just spray it on and wipe it off , you can also soak your rollers in it to , it cleans your gelli plate and your rollers , I'm Linda Bailey from Corpus Christi Texas , Susan you need to do this it works great and it seasons your gelli plate too .

Hi Linda, Yes that is what I use. But when I need to get to work quickly I just use the hand sanitizer and baby wipes. This was many layers of paint and a quick wipe wasn't going to do it. I also use baby oil every couple of weeks. Thanks for your comment.

You can wet the area you are trying to peel off the cardboard using a paintbrush and a little water. It helps it come off easier. I saw another artist, Mark Yeates, do this. I haven’t done it myself though.

I look at everything differently now that I'm using the gel plate. I see texture in everything. My newest find is an onion bag. It leaves a really fine print on the plate. I love it!

If you paint water on cardboard and add to sit for a few minutes, the later you want to remove will come off easier and cleaner

Cardboard is one of my very favorite texture plates. I do a lot of shipping and any box I cut down is fair game for my gel plates. I like your idea of cutting shapes, I just pull sections off, but will try this. I also keep each one. As the layers build up of different colors, the cardboard gets really beautiful. I'm planning a framed wall piece with just the multi-layered cardboard pieces, perhaps in a quilt-like or log cabin design.

I love that idea of using the cardboard pieces in a piece of artwork. That will be beautiful. I love the paint on my stencils sometimes too. It looks so beautiful I just want to glue into a collage. I have done that.

Some GREAT results, here! I really think you should hang onto the colorful piece at approximately 35:00 & after, that didn't fully pull up. Come back to it in a week or two and see what you think, then. Except possibly for the stray marks on the left (purple) margin, I think these are extremely rich and interesting shapes. I kind of wish they were on deli paper or wet-strength tissue so you could make them transparent, for as collage layers, because I love the broken, degraded edges so much. But even as they stand (and maybe turned vertically with the purple at the top?) I think you produced a very interesting result.
I think one of the reasons that print didn't pull completely, the first time, is that your paint layer may be thinning a lot, by the time your brayer reaches the edges of the plate. That would make those areas dry much more quickly.
For plate cleanup (and also for retouching areas before pulling a print, in case of stray marks), I learned from the Yeates Makes channel that you can use masking tape, wrapped around your finger(s) sticky side out. Clear packing tape also works, and can actually result in nice clear elements to attach to a collage, if you don't mind the gloss. I haven't yet tried the kind of wide transfer tape used with a vinyl cutter, but it might work very well, too. And I think some is available in a more matte finish.
Finally, and also on the subject of giving yourself a chance to love your results, while the "mistake" of brayering the Titan Green Pale off onto the brightly-colored roll-off sheet did result in a less vibrant sheet, it's still quite beautiful. It has a similar feel to the two plate-cleaning prints you pulled, both of which I also actually love. If you imagined those as huge, floor-to-ceiling canvases, I could easily see them hanging in a gallery. I always love work that seems very simple, at first glance, but rewards closer observation by revealing complexities and subtleties not immediately obvious. Those two pulls have that in spades!

Thanks for you comment. I always keep everything. Bit of a hoarder. Because eventually I find a use for prints I thought I didn't like. I scan the brayer sheets to make printables. They can be very interesting.
