I hate Dave’s voice. It sounds weak and whiny. It has no presence, no gravitas. Just like Dave, who has been whining all these years that he got kicked out of Metallica. Dave decided he was going to found a band where he had complete control over everything, from the lineup to merchandising, and he decided he was going to do everything himself so he’d never get kicked out of another band. Unfortunately, the music product Mustaine made wasn’t as good as Metallica. Case in point, I OWN many Metallica albums. I’m familiar with Megadeth’s music and I know their songs but I’m not crazy enough about them to spend my money on them. Dave decided he was going to make a band that was going to outperform Metallica. It didn’t happen and the music Megadeth makes is grossly inferior to Metallica. Dave Mustaine writes pretty decent songs. But he ruined all of them by insisting he do all the work himself instead of letting someone else better perform what he wrote. In this case, performing the work himself wasn’t a good move. Dave Mustaine’s vocals sound like demo scratch vocals that should have been replaced and performed by someone better later on but no one ever got around to it. Megadeth sucks! Because they aren’t Metallica!
As a die hard fan of Megadeth, I think you are amazing. So many facts, so much mirth. What I especially dig is that you critique Mustaine while appreciating him.
Bradley, I don't need to tell you that you're an incredibly talented musician and satirist, and I am a big fan. But I think you have the ability to rise to the next level by putting out a serious album of original songs that people will listen to if you put more than 24 hours into it (maybe a month or more) and perhaps get some other talented people to participate.
Really, I couldn't imagine someone else singing over that music. Maybe on the more commercial stuff, but by the time Youthanasia was made, Dave's voice sounded the best. And he peaked on Risk. But, I can't think of anyone else with that attitude and snarl in his voice. It's the same with Randy from Lamb of God. I'm not into that style of vocal. I like melody in vocals, and if you are going to sing like that, a blend of the two is fine. Examples would be Opeth or Jinjer. But, I couldn't imagine a real singer on Lamb of God. That is the sound of that band. And despite vocals holding back a lot of people from liking Megadeth, I couldn't imagine it without Dave singing. Not only does his red hair stick out in a sea of metal bands, his vocals do to.
I freakin’ love Megadeth and if I spent a month trying to work up a brief description of what they do I would never come close to the hilari-accuracy of “‘government bad’ followed by 20 guitar solos.”

Yeah, when I first heard the song "Peace Sells.." in '86 I immediately liked Dave's vocals. He sounded pissed-off and sarcastic, which was a fairly unusual thing in commercially-aimed heavy metal at that time. His vocal melodies and lyrics were memorable and inventive. I bought the Peace Sells album soon after and continued to like Dave's vocals. His snarling delivery reminded me of Alice Cooper's vocal delivery in the rougher parts of early '70s songs like "I'm Eighteen" and "Billion Dollar Babies" and perennial scare-fest classic "The Ballad of Dwight Frye." Sure, Dave doesn't go out of his way to affect a pleasant timbre to his voice, though I'm sure he can do it well and often if he felt like doing so. But he chooses not to get into that territory. Besides, pleasant vocal timbre and refined vocal technique are not what I'm seeking or expecting here -- there's an animate skeleton in a suit and a mushroom cloud on my Peace Sells album, leading dumb ol' consumer me to think this music is supposed to be lethal and uncompromising. And, considering how complicated and gear shift-y Megadeth songs are from an instrumental standpoint, it's a good contrast to have a pretty plainspoken lyric delivery with vocal melodies that aren't intended to sound particularly impressive but instead carry some "got to get this off my chest" emotional impact. Just my two cents... but who's spending?
