( years older than him)
I had lots of PT, including the swimming pool therapy. I'm in my 70s now and have slight issues with knees, but nothing bad/ or unusual for my age!

Sorry to be rude but remember what your wife said in another vid while pushing you in a wheelchair « Is that will be my future? ». So you better listen to doctor. I dislocated my left knee and since then I still have little pain going up/down stairs…. And that was 25 years ago.

I am totally shocked, Sunny at just 8 months is so strong and confident standing on her legs. Another little athlete in the family. Derek, please please do not start running before it is time, nor should you "go really hard"" with your training. That was my thinking when I was in my 20s, no patience at all. Now here I am...walking with a walker, going in for a total hip replacement surgery in 3 weeks,. Then, listening to you...I am reminded ..be smart, do training/rehab as advised. I have another hip replacement to be done as soon as the first hip is sufficiently healed. Find alternative ways to generate the endorphins. You and Sarah are raising your kids to be athletes. Do what it takes to be able to go the distance with them, and the grandkids. Congrats to you both on your new home! It looks beautiful.

Find other ways for your Zen. For me, it's now lifting weights! Put the earbuds in and chill! Good luck ❤❤❤❤

But it is sad, because I must agree with him, if you have tendencies to be anxious running is such good therapy for all the reasons Derik mentioned.
Happy Belated Birthday, Sarah!! You are an exceptional and amazing woman, wife, mother and most of all, human. Derik, listen to your doctors. You don’t want to get to get to your 40’s, 50’s and/or 60’s and not be able to do anything because your knees are so bad and hurt too much. You don’t want knee replacements if you can avoid them. Try biking, swimming, weight training, the elliptical, something low impact. I get you love running but your body doesn’t. Take care of yourself for the sake of your family and future. We all just want the best for you. Congrats on the new house.

Derik, BE SMART! Your entire body has been through so very much for one so young! Yep. I am an old grandma preaching to you. I need TWO hip replacements and TWO knee replacements. You do NOT want to end up with artificial joints at such a young age. First of all, they are never like your own, God-given joints. Secondly, replacement joints don't last! You are looking at having to go through those miserable procedures, general anesthesia, rehab, etc., probably three times in your life. You don't want that! You want to be able to play with your precious children, go hiking (eventually, after you heal completely), bike riding, swimming, and other activities that aren't going to threaten your ability to walk. Just don't run or skateboard! Find some other activity that allows you to clear your mind and forget the things that stress you out. There's always a reason for everything that happens to us. You know that well. We may not understand the reason for a long time, but eventually, we understand why certain things have happened to us. You're a good young man and great daddy and husband. You need to be there for your beautiful family. Take care and allow your body to heal. Have you had any of the "gel" knee shots? Find a doctor out there who does "genicular ablation." It worked for my husband. Can leave your knees PAIN FREE for years and can be performed again if the nerves grow back together. Good night from South Carolina and belated happy birthday, Sarah! Yes Sarah, show him. He has a lovely family to take care of. He cannot afford to put burden on you, a still very new mother, who has two young ones to twke care of.
Derek, you get way too carried away during your fun events. The very last thing you want is to have to get hurt again and have it be serious enough that you would need some sort of joint replacement.
When, because of chronic knee injuries/surgeries my brother had to give up running,he started 45 minutes of treading water. Then walking. All along lifting weights. Now,at 78, he rides an adult tricycle. All this to say: don't be young and foolish,be wise. Keep being active, just use your head and listen to your doctor. You want to be able to keep walking. Happy Birthday Sarah! Dude....stop running. A doctor one time told me he NEVER runs because he has seen how it has ruined people's knees and backs. He RIDES A BIKE! Low impact on your joints! You will be very sorry if you keep running. Your kids are beautiful!
And swimming is another sport for low impact in joints 🤔

I can vouch for this, my knees were shot by the time I hit 40! I was also a runner.
Bicycle or recumbent bicycle. Ask doc which is better. You can still get your exercise, still compete against others, in just a different form.

I understand the running thing. I’m 68 and just now beginning to run again after a severe ankle injury 3 yrs ago. It’s been a long process. I’m starting out simple slow. I have my first 5K race planned next month. Wish me luck. I’ll keep you my prayers. Running is like magic for mental hearth. 😊

Happy Birthday Sarah! I think your family is very brave to do this vlog-this public type of life makes families so vulnerable to criticism, jealousy, and hate. I felt very sad for the negative vibes you encountered in Hawaii. Your vlog is realistic, which is much more truthful than the ones that never show “bad things” that happen in life. I laughed but felt sorry for tiny little Sarah putting forth so much effort to push that wheelchair at the dinosaur place. Everyone’s advice about pool therapy and bike riding (please, please wear a bike helmet!) seem spot on for your injury Derik. Don’t be afraid if you need a knee replacement-that type of surgery has improved so much in the last 20 to 30 years. Your recovery from your cliff fall shows how tough you can be! I know this will sound mean and critical, and of course I don’t know all the ways you you bring in income (nor do I want to know) but please consider future means of support for your family. You all may not always be young and cute with little babies (not trying to sound harsh!) and your children may not be happy with their lives being so public. As an example, take a look at the Duggar family. So please always take care of your mental health, too. I pray that God will bless you and keep you. ❤

A year is just a blip in time. With as much activity as you guys do you'll find an alternative while you're healing.

Dude taking up rowing, just as intense, great outlet for when you're dealing with stuff. There is a learning period but you're athletic and will pick it up pretty fast. Speedy recovery

Without getting into my health history, I have had to relearn how to walk 5 times & know that running, my previous best therapy, is no longer possible. You will still be able to move in new ways ~ never give up!! Lifting weights, walking, hiking, & swimming are great new movements to enjoy!

Happy Birthday Sarah! Such a fun and funny birthday. Golf was a hoot, but i think youd do great with a shorter club. Lauren was so funny! I laughed so hard. Sunny is absolutely adorable and Jack is a sweet and wonderful big brother. Sorry to hear about your knee Derik, and i totally understand your love of running. In my 20s, I ran 7 miles daily and it was so great. I was also a critical care nurse, but now that im into my 60s, i have terrible spine and joint problems and am in constant severe pain that cant be fixed with surgery, and normal physical therapy makes the pain worse. Hydrotherapy is what helps. I would suggest getting a good bicycle (maybe a mountain bike) and just start riding. You have some beautiful scenery and trails you could ride, and after building up your endurance, would be able to get that same peace and tranquility without such wear and tear on your body. I wish I had done cycling, but was in the Army for a few years, and forgot about cycling after having to run so much. Trust me, when you're older, your body will thank you. Arthritis sucks.

Derek, there are many other things you can do to get that zen that isn't running! Swimming is one that is extra great because it puts no pressure on your joints! Then there is bicycling! You need to make sure the bike fits you correctly, but that is not going to put the pressure on your knees that running does! You are very young! These are the ONLY knees you have! [Rebuilt knees are pretty much worthless!] I expect that you would enjoy the ability to still walk when you are 60+ years old!! When you cycle, you can move incredibly fast, and go serious distance! As long as you get the right bike for the type of cycling you like (racing or mountain biking) and the bike fits you correctly, you'd be surprised how great it can feel!!

Happy happy birthday Sarah!!! Derrick, I have horrible knees and ankles from years of dance, the only none exertion exercise I can do regularly is spin. There are seriously so many fun ways to do it and classes are so much fun too. You can also do bike rides, in the great outdoors. You live in such a beautiful state so enjoy it.
