The driver's seat felt like I was sitting on a bucket, and not an upside down bucket. The brakes felt like they were from before power brakes. And the #1 reason I hated that car, about 10 years ago, while driving in heavy Friday evening traffic on the San Diego Freeway, in the far left lane of a 6 lane freeway, suddenly the steering wheel became so hard to turn that I had to use every bit of my strength to make even the slightest change. My mom had driven that same freeway to pick me up from where I was getting my truck worked on. All I could imagine was that steering wheel problem happening while she'd been driving only minutes before. At the repair shop they showed me that the shaft of a pulley had bent at about a 30* angle and the belt slipped off. Is that the only pulley for the power steering? I was moving at 40-50 mph when it went. Never had such a hard time steering. I thought for sure another car would hit us but we made it safely off the freeway. I had a lot of motorists angry at me even though I was flashing the car's emergency lights. Anyone care to share any similar stories?
Earlier editions of the front wheel drive "big" GMs had a fault inside the steering rack. It would start as being harder to turn one way than the other. Eventually it would simply lock up. I know a few people who crashed because of it. It was a defective valve in the centre of the rack. All of them were under 100,000 miles. Meanwhile my 90 Volvo is at 400,000 miles with the factory steering rack still perfect. It has had a new coupler and new outer tie rod ends, but the rest is all 31 years old. As far as those connectors go, butt splices are fine as long as you have the wires stripped at the proper lengths, use a properly sized splice based on the wire gauge, and use a good quality ratcheting crimper, preferably Thomas and Betts or Burndy but they have a decent one at Harbor Freight. This is nearly 25 years of crimping experience for mainly telecom DC power connections talking.
Also, I think to get back your steering wheel button functionality, there may be an additional GM-specific interface that you’ll need to use. My 05 Sierra would need this if I ever changed the stock head unit. It also returns the functionality of OnStar and the key buzzer chimes that normally run through the speakers. And GM antenna plugs are (I’m sure intentionally) different from those of every other vehicle make.
That huge ATOTO works great for the Buick. Nice job. If you ever need something with similar functionality for the ZHP, I recommend the Eonon GA9450 unit. It's only a 7" display but it has factory looking controls and fits perfectly in the dash and plugs into the factory harness.
Absolutely love the Eonon head units and I will definitely be trying to get my hands on one but the price is a bit out of reach at the moment, especially with how much stuff that car needs.
For the Eonon is there any cutting into plastic needing to be done toward the rear by factory harness? Or is it just remove old stereo and put new in no mods needed? Thanks for any help.

Very good information here, Jake. Well done. What I use for those connections is the heat shrink with solder and flux. A one step soldered joint that I then seal in more heat shrink. I've never had any issue doing it that way. That size and brightness of screen would drive me batshit crazy. Too much of my driving is on 2 lane roads in the country at night. I can't even stand the back lit instrument clusters in new cars. I much prefer the old front lit cluster. I'm also not used to, nor do I want, anything in my car that means I must look at a touch screen. That is, to me, dangerously poor ergonomics. Picking up parts for my 90 Volvo, I looked at the new V90. When I asked the salesperson how to use the controls without taking eyes off the road, I was told that the passenger should use them. I buy heat shrink connectors with solder and flux already in. A heat gun or cigarette lighter is all that is needed. I add a second layer of heat shrink, just to be safe.

Yep. Mid-range 80s stuff. Not amazing, not awful. It makes sound. I have a pair of old Pioneer GS-G403 hooked up to my TV with a 12" Klipsch sub filling in the low end. It's similarly okay. Not amazing. I'd love to get some "real" speakers but I realized that while $600 will buy some mediocre speakers, $600 will buy world-class headphones and $60 will buy a solid set of IEMs.
Jumbotron indeed. Even old people like me can see that screen! Next time, twist the insulation pieces as you remove them. Then you don't get finger oils on your wires. Much more important when you're soldering than crimping, but good practice regardless.
I'm disappointed your not going to have a massive clock other cars can't read when driving by and you didn't color match the heat shrink. 😆 Kidding aside, very nice how too!
my dual 7 inch slide out screen radio I bought over 9 years ago has about 5 inputs and stuff on the back. its ridiculous and still works great playing movies. I am just missing the xm radio that was a optional plug in
I've used similar crimps for header pins. (The 0.1" kind) I had no idea they made wire to wire crimps in that style but it makes a ton of sense. If you don't know how to use the crimper it can be a nightmare, but once you figure it out it's not bad.

the number one thing you'll say in car show is "not a Holley display"
Jumbotron indeed. Even old people like me can see that screen!
Next time, twist the insulation pieces as you remove them. Then you don't get finger oils on your wires. Much more important when you're soldering than crimping, but good practice regardless.
What a great screen install! Didn't know retrofits for older cars existed. Maybe you can drag the workbench into the shower with you?
For real lol.
Like the radio I’ve got a power Aqustic version
Why are people so afraid of soldering cables? 😂
I always waited for stores that ran free install sale
I'm disappointed your not going to have a massive clock other cars can't read when driving by and you didn't color match the heat shrink. 😆
Kidding aside, very nice how too!
my dual 7 inch slide out screen radio I bought over 9 years ago has about 5 inputs and stuff on the back. its ridiculous and still works great playing movies.
I say you one up Elliott and buy Ed's Ferrari from Car Trek 4. Yes they haven't shot it yet, or are shooting it now, but when they get done. Call dibs. Elliott might have a Ferrari derived engine...you can have a Ferrari car. We'll get you 250k subscribers somehow.. I have recommended you to Life of Palos as well. Of course he is friends with John Ross so I would think he would give you a shout out, but so far, just Elliott. I'm trying Jake. You are the Steve Wright of automotive RUclips and dammit, I appreciate that.
yes your work bench needs a bit of a tidy :) .....also clean that windshield :)
Wow that looks sweet! Does it ever get in the way going into park?
Hey man did you ever get the steering wheel controls working on this? Trying to figure out if i require an adapter or if its really just one wire.
Will this work in a 1.5 din opening even though the device is actually 2din?
Jack Mustang Cobras 2003 supercharged models are #42-pound injectors and trailblazer decapped 4.2 are 60# Junk yard run for the low buck buick
Now you can reinstall those great aftermarket 6x9 s
Isn’t it bad for the valves to run e85 when it’s not a flex fuel vehicle?
So what version of Android is it running? This would be great with the WiFi antenna for WarDriving.
Oh no...now it's not stock anymore.....lol
Microphone at the top of the a pillar trim
Great install. Ordered the crimps they look great. You gotta clean that workbench tho, tsk tsk.
Couldn't make out the ear buds mentioned - any chance to link to those?
ZK ZSN, I believe. They're on Amazon or a bit cheaper on aliexpress if you don't mind a long wait
Because radio!
Your workspace is much cleaner than mine. I am an absolute pig.
I'm far more disturbed by your mismatched speakers than the messy bench. Priorities Jake.
