In 2012, an 85 year old woman named Marilyn Hagerty would write a seemingly innocuous food review for the Olive Garden restaurant located in her home town. After being published online, the review would get attention from high brow food critics and redditors. Many felt Marilyn’s review to be comically detailed to be written for a chain restaurant. She would face a wave of online mockery for some time. Today I tell you all the story of Marilyn’s Olive Garden Review, and how she turned the tables on her detractors.

As someone who lives in a small Midwest town, everyone lost their damn minds when we got a freaking Taco johns! Everyone piles into Applebees to drink and watch a game. People in larger towns/cities don’t realize that in small towns we don’t get a lot of options, so we appreciate the few luxuries we have. Even if it’s an Olive Garden.
Amen. I'm from a small farm town in Minnesota and this sentiment is so true
Grand forks is a big city to me 😂
Facts. I too am from a small town and lived in the many towns around it with only 1000 people. The hip thing was to come to my town because it was "big" had a couple bars and an Applebee's. I live in a pretty good sized town in Alabama, but I had the opportunity to try Taco Johns a few years ago, and it was so much better than Taco Bell. I don't blame y'all for getting excited, I would be over the moon if we had a Taco Johns built locally!
"On a summer day, I will try the raspberry lemonade that was recommended." God bless this woman.
Older people have such a rigid idea of what's proper and when. Like drinking lemonade on a cold day, calling after 8pm, watching a movie on a weekday etc. It's like any deviation from what's normal causes a short circuit. It's kinda hilarious.
This lady is adorable though.
@@sealmeatisbestmeat1241 I mean hey whatever brings a more organized life you can count me in! It is funny though indeed. Drinking the tea on a summer day is so completely irrelevant to the review I just love it 😂

Went to a local very expensive Italian restaurant since my ridiculously snobby cousin was in town and she couldn't palate the likes of OG. The food was OK, but I'll tell you, OG tastes so much better, you get way more food (for leftovers) and the price is half the cost. Stand up Straight: Right. The quality doesn't get serious until the price gets to something like 5X, and I just can't stand to spend that kind of money even for a really great meal, on the principle of the thing. Upbringing by parents who both lived through the great depression as kids, and who knew and taught the value of a dollar and frugality (which I respected a lot), I suppose.
Far easier for people to waste lots of money and then demand that everyone take care of them because they are "poor" though. (And I'm not talking about actual poor people here, but whiners with little to no self discipline).

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
💯
Was in and out of homelessness as a teen/early 20s. Soup kitchens were where I ate most of my meals back then. I gotta say Olive Garden looks pretty good and fancier than Swiss Chalet. There's no Olive Garden around me, so I've never been. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in an actual fancy, expensive restaurant. I was brought to one once. I was appalled at the prices and just wanted a poutine; which ofc such a place is above (fries, gravy, cheese curds.) The closest they had were pommes des frites; super skinny long French fries that were limp and tasted like disappointment. Perhaps they weren't properly made, idk, I just know they were overpriced and ruined fries by trying to fancify them. The fries weren't the worst of the experience, but certainly the most memorable 😅
Those people can be pretentious if they want. The rest of us keep it real and have a better time spending less money.

When you live in a safe, rural Midwestern town, you best believe an Olive Garden opening is major positive news. Anthony was right - this is how America eats. All the best memories I have of eating out with friends and family are at places like Applebee’s, Souplantation (RIP), Denny’s and Texas Road House, not the fancy places. Birthdays, graduations, road trips, late night high school hangouts. Casual dining is where you go regularly because it is both affordable and a fun place to hang out, with atmosphere as homey as the company you keep. Dennys has crap service and mediocre food, but we still visit again and again on road trips because that is tradition. The beautiful thing about chain restaurants is consistency - you always know what kind of food and service you are going to get.
I’m also from the Midwest. Olive Garden isn’t gourmet, or authentic Italian, but it’s delicious and consistent. I love it!
Souplantation 😔
I’ve never been to Olive Garden, but I’m curious now
Never been to Applebees either 😭

This reminds that older people tend to be lonely as well as tight on money. Going to the Olive Garden might be a rare event for them as well as a bit of a luxury. She essentially took the classy way of saying "I don't have time for Redditors because I have a job and shit to do." Which is the most accurate and scathing retort she could have picked.
The flipside is that, if you're still having a job and too busy to interact with people online at 85...
I mean, you gotta stop the hustle at some point. Plus, most people have jobs and are busy. It's not like the trolls are spending hours of their lives hunting her down and tormenting her. They're probably going "Haha, look at this dumb review, I'm gonna take 2 minutes to tell her that it's dumb on my break."
Honestly, people who think "Wow, this person posted a mean comment. They obviously have no job and don't contribute to society at all because they could have used that one precious minute at work," is somehow even more sad. It's like confessing that you don't have any free time to yourself, and taking the time to respond like that shows the trolls that they won and makes their victory even sweeter because the "Lol, you suck," comments got to you because you didn't ignore them, you actively told them that despite your busy schedule and things to do you took time to tell them "Fuck off. I'm much better than you, and better than these comments. I'm above replying to you.... Wait..."
@@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 It's more that people who are busy doing the things they enjoy doing in life are not attracted by the idea of telling people off, or bothered by people who have views that they might disagree with. Really not a question of free time, more one of free motivation.

I’m from Alaska and remember when the first ever Olive Garden in the state opened in Anchorage in 2012. My friends and I drove 3 hours and the wait time was almost 2 hours till we got a table, to be honest I was underwhelmed (though the poor staff had their work cut out for them with the high volume of people coming to eat)
Never underestimate how excited a small town can be for something many places consider a lowly “chain”
I’m from Los Angeles and would never ever harass anyone for liking the service and food in a restaurant like Olive Garden. I myself would love their food also.
I’m an Aussie who went to the Olive Garden in Ann Arbor Michigan and I had an awesome experience the staff were amazing, food was good and as a tourist I was glad of the affordable prices so I’ve always wondered why everyone pays out on Olive Garden
I'm another Aussie who also loved going to those places in the US! Probably because we really don't have anything like that over here, so it is a bit of a novelty, I guess ... But I also had a really good experience there. It is what it is, and why can't we just enjoy it for that? It is stupid to compare an establishment like that to a Michelin starred restaurant or whatever. (And even dumber for those online trolls to criticize this lady for knowing that her job entails not doing that!)
Wild that you named one of only two Olive Garden locations I have ever dined at in my life 😂😂
Man, most people that shit on Olive Garden haven't even been, they just let memes & Family Guy jokes tell them it's bad. Olive Garden is a perfectly nice place to have a family meal. They're usually very professional, & they even give you unlimited breadsticks. Honestly, it's just the masses trying to be cool by shitting on what's popular to shit on.
Carol: Well, to be fair, it was a mediocre (at best) Italian place re the food, and they tried to play it up like it was a big deal. So that was kind of silly, but it's what marketers DO. But for me, I MUCH preferred various hole in the wall Italian eateries with good food and far less decor at similar prices. Kind of like how I love good hole in the wall chinese places over fancy chains, etc.
But yeah, aside from the marketing it was just "meh", not nearly bad enough to hate on.

Yeh, can she review a Waffle House next?
I'm a food snob and I love Olive Garden. Especially the salad dressing and bread sticks.
Better than McDonalds, eh?
PointyFox: If someone else will make it, there's nothing much better than a bottomless fresh salid, IMO. Especially given what salads cost at restaurants in the modern era. THAT was by far my best memory of going to Olive Garden as a kid.
(The two weeks we went to FL, my dinners were generally massive seafood based chef salads. I was in heaven. As I recall I was about 10. To me that was as enjoyable as the surf and turf many people were eating, and I could get steak or even the occasional surf and turf at home).
Looking back, I was a weird kid, but I like being at my college "fighting weight" of 120 pounds (though no longer all solid muscle) over 40 years later, and things like salads are key to that.

I hate reddit so much.
@TheDodicat hate to break it to you but after 15 years in the food industry unless your going to a 5 star restaurant the food is going to be microwaved or flash cooked. It's a sad but true reality. Even small family restaurants that I've worked for have primarily used microwaves. I had to fight to make fresh dishes at my last place of employment. I literally had to show everyone (owner, other cooks, and management) that it was fast, easy and totally worth having the customer be happy with their food. It takes an extra few minutes to make something fresh vs frozen and microwaved as long as its prepped ahead of shift, but the restaurant industry is more interested in fast because people get upset when they have to wait 15 minutes for their food.

In short, this is why Anthony, is the man. He checked himself, stepped back and took a look, and not only saw Marilyn for who she was, but decided to step forward and join her. He had years in the business, he knew, food is food, we all eat… I grew up eating this food, and was thrust into high end food (through starting as a dishwasher) early on. I walked away from the business when my kids showed up (read Kitchen Confidential) because the business and it’s culture, was not something I wanted to be a part of any more… People cook, serve, work hard, whether it’s McD’s or the best digs in Manhattan. As someone from a small town, I can really attest to new restaurants and changes being a big deal, my town has 1,900 people, there are 2 bars, one coffee shop, one ice cream shop, one McDonald’s 1 Taco Bell, 2 diners (recently only one now) and one Italian restaurant, my town is fortunate enough to had a decent sized road running through it, it gets about the same traffic as an average suburban road, which can’t be said about most other small towns in the area. the Italian restaurant is actually pretty fancy, and does extremely well, as the main road in town is the best way from the Chicago suburbs to lake Geneva Wisconsin, there are many rich and middle class people alike that travel up to their lake houses or just for a day on the beach, which brings lots of traffic through town and to the local businesses, especially since we are directly on the border and the last good place to stop before about 20 miles of nothing. With all that probably unnecessary context,
I guess what I’m trying to say is changes in small towns are always big to the residents, when one of the diners closed recently, everyone was talking about it for weeks, whether that be by word of mouth or the town Facebook page. nothing goes unnoticed in a small town, and seemingly Mundine things in cities or suburbs can be a big deal.

Only I'd like to mention that while Olive Garden claims to serve Italian cuisine they actually don't. It's American food, you won't find most of their dishes in Italy.
1,900 people...wow.
Ebro, Florida has less than 300 people! There's legit nothing except a poker room, a Subway, one motel (for the poker room), and a gas station. That's it.
I plan on living in a hamlet that doesn’t even have anything more than a gas station with basic food items, and a post office, The next closest town is only a 20 minute drive however it’s a town of 1600 people, one grocery store, a bar, a post office, a liquor store , a few gas stations cause it’s in the high way and some local restaurants but that’s it, no brand restaurants lol, for that u have to drive to Prince George or jasper
As a non-American I can perfectly understand the hype of a new chain arriving to your hometown. When KFC opened it’s first restaurant in Helsinki there were litterally long lines of people standing outside the restaurant. Same thing with heckin’ Burger King lmao.
