Anyone Can Get Lag (Just Do This Drill)

  • Everyone wants lag yet few ever get it. Here is a super simple drill that you can try. When you do have someone video your swing and I guarantee you will have lag in your swing.
    The great majority of golfers hit with their arms. This moves the club before the body. The word lag means something is trailing behind something else. So if you have no lag your club is moving before your body so you need to do the opposite.
    So moving your body is a huge part which will allow anyone to get lag. There is one more part that I show you in this tip. To demonstrate I show one of my students who was severely casting the club and doing a chicken wing through impact. I had him do the drill and instantly his club was lagging. After you do the drill and see that you are getting leg then you need to keep doing the drill and feel what it feels like to finally lag the club.

      For sure. Everyone marvels a little kids as they swing. They keep sending me videos of their grand kids with the title "young Tiger." To me, these are great swings but any kid can do that almost instantly. The problem is they marvel at kids and don't copy them. So try to be a weak as kid in the arms and as strong as an adult in the legs and hips.

    I use the swingrite trainer q day to focus on that release feeling and trying to have it happen....just swinging it wont make it happen...you have to loosen it up feel oily at the wrist...and it will click indicating a release....this video reminds me that when i am swinging in the air for my pre-shot routine that you are not having the thought of releasing the club....all you are doing is turning your body and the mass of the club is automatically releasing due to the physics of a mass rotating around an axis....there is no active thought of releasing the club.....???....when you are swinging in the air...is there any swing thought you have to focus on ?or trigger..or your target?...or is there just emptiness?...because youve done millions of them?

    I don't have trouble creating lag but rather where to release it. Before or after impact?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад

      Unless you are slicing the ball you are not even thinking about releasing it. You are allowing the loose wrists to release it for you. I talk about this in the very tip. Watch these too:
      ruclips.net/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/MTLQWJLRAU0/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/gMVs6SZNBIQ/видео.html
      So you are hinging and rehinging to unlock your wrists. You are then coiling and uncoiling your body. The final step is to turn your arms off. This is important too so you can fix your own swing:

    • @bloatedsodium7301
      @bloatedsodium7301 Год назад

      Yes, you could be releasing the club too late. Try gripping down and do this drill. You’ll be making the swing arc shorter and you should be hooking instead of slicing/shanking/fading.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад +1

      Because you were only working on delaying the club. If you held the delay too long the face would be open. Hold the lad then release it. That is the whole point of getting lag so you can release a better angle.

    Agree, I have difficulty at impact with club face control, timing, loose grip, thus not hitting the ball flush on the clubface. Any suggestions on how to overcome this?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад

      First you need to hold onto the club. It is secure grip ... loose wrists. Watch: ruclips.net/video/YHCEPu9e_1k/видео.html
      Once you can do that you work on the swing in 2 parts. Watch me fix a student first:
      ruclips.net/video/q5RojTx5sHI/видео.html
      To get it, you work on your hinge first. You hinge and roll it over rehinging it on the other side. You get every ball hooking. This way you know where the ball is going before you hit it. Don't be link everyone else and dwell on the negative. See the positive. You are doing half right. You are consistently releasing the club (although it's too early).
      Wrists = Spin (Step 1)

      ruclips.net/video/M868QsTlGt4/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/yHEv7G9Z5-0/видео.html
      Once you can do that you memorize that feeling. Then move to step 2 which is adding your body. Watch:
      ruclips.net/video/FV8uSZ16Bys/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/RdphthCQ9VM/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/m8FxSZSmKEw/видео.html (secret tip)
      It is literally that simple.

    • @johnbak9395
      @johnbak9395 Год назад

      Paul, Thank you. The only question is using these steps especially the snapping of my wrists will the wrists be bowed at impact or should I just swing and not worry if wrists are bowed or not. I would then look at ball flight, and the feeling at impact as to whether the contact was flush. I have a tendency to overthinking leading to paralysis by analysis. Really do appreciate all your help. Sincerely,
      John Bak

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад

      Yep, make it simple. I am not thinking of wrist position at impact. You only have a few degrees room for error. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. With driver 1 degree open at 250 is 14 yards offline. Irons would be more room for error but it's not much. So people trying to manipulate the face will get on a roll for a few shots then the next one goes sideways and they scratch their head wondering why. So let's say it pull hooks so what does the person do? They hold it off now they blow it right. This is exactly what Brooks Koepka did in the masters. Played defensive. Started pulling it. Then he start blowing it right. This is someone trying to manipulate the face. This is why I never think impact. Impact is not the widest point of the arc so why would anyone care about it? Need to allow forces to act on the mass. If so you never manipulate it (powerless arms). Hit the top then allow the weight of the club to swing wherever it wants. This will stretch it out fully which is what I call the release point which is after the ball is hit. Watch:
      ruclips.net/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/MTLQWJLRAU0/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/gMVs6SZNBIQ/видео.html
      If your club hits that point it will be perfect at impact with no twisting.

    Hi Paul, I've been able to make a lot of progress in my swing with loose wrists. Ball starts right (RH player) and draws back. That said, I'm still only getting 95-97mph driver swing speed. How can I get more speed with this technique?

    Been trying to get this lag thing forever. This is a great explanation. 1 question: What actually drops the club on the down swing? Do you pull it down as you rotate OR do you let gravity pull it down as you rotate? Great stuff as always.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад +3

      Your body drops the club. This is simple physics of mass swinging around and axis. Watch:
      ruclips.net/video/cogyf6UjH7U/видео.html
      You keep hitting which will send it over the top.
      You are not pulling anything down. This is you moving the mass (club) before the axis (body) which will never work. You hit the top. You are thinking about firing your lower body. Your arms are turned off. If you turn your body your arms will follow. If so, the club moves towards 90 to your body every time.
      So coil and hinge to the top. Completely turn your arms off. Use your body to hit the ball. Watch this one:
      ruclips.net/video/SgZ94B93w4o/видео.html

      Simple is the key. Anyone can do this. The ball is the problem. People want to hit with the arms so they move the club before the body. Just loosen the wrists and start the body first.

    Paul- how does Jon Rahm create so much lag with such a short backswing?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад +2

      He fires his body first arms follow. That is what I said in the tip. Keep in mind he had a longer swing at one point. He also learned as a kid. If you have minimal arms strength how are you going to hit a golf ball? You will use your body and arms follow thus you get lag without ever working on it. Once you get it, you will never not get it.
