      Thank you for your video. I kind of felt in a slump moving into fall this year. You gave me a lot of great ideas to give me a push.
      I definitely love the fruit in the bowls, a bowl of soaps in the bathroom, and I love the ideas of flowers in the bedroom.
      I am inspired now, and tomorrow I'm going to dig in and do little changes around my home.
      Thank you! 😀

      First of all, Lisa- I do love your channel here, you come up with a lot of valuable advise and ideas- many thanks to you! BUT you asked for comments! I also have a huge issue with buying books by color just to decorate with! I knew someone who did this and I came away from her house thinking she was incredibly superficial and mindless! And the coffee tables you show are so cluttered up no one could use them to put anything on- very impractical just to get a certain look. Don't put bowls of fruit just to get the color- if you are never going to eat or use them. Get colorful bowls instead and maybe put things you are actually going to use, like onions or potatoes that you don't want to put in the frig, or coffee pods, or napkins, etc.

      glad this was top comment....this struck me as sad too! if you don't care about reading, admit that about yourself and fill your space with something else....and if you do care about reading then collecting books is automatic lol (and you can still group them by colour or whatever if that's your thing)

      I dont see why not, though. I find it pleasing to look at, like a vase of flowers. Lavender flowers can be turned into tea, so I dont see why books can't have more than one function, like flowers. Also,, there's some boxes that are fake books and I can't wait to buy one to hold my remotes!

  • @trolfek

    Two things: I got right up and tried to rearrange a few things in my kitchen (during the video), and DON’T buy books collections by color! LOL. I’m in publishing and I hate that idea! Buy books that you want to read or look at, and keep. Enjoying someone’s library of books that reflect their interest is much preferred than one that just looks good. 😉

    • @paulabroussard1824
      @paulabroussard1824 4 года назад +28

      I agree!! Don't belittle books to "color accessories". If you want to sort existing books you love by color, that is fine, but turning the bindings back and treating them like mindless decor is so sad. That sad, if it's only what keeps books being bought, I'll be fine with it.

    • @LisaEarleMcLeod
      @LisaEarleMcLeod 4 года назад +6

      No need to buy books by color, you can group buy color. I have a zillion books, I’m an author, and have author friends, so I literally have hundreds of books, many are signed, when I arranged them by color, it looks fabulous.

    • @janicevin4207

      I so agree and if you don't read: don't put books in your decor!!! Your home should reflect you as you are, not a fake idea of you!!! Even with all my books I would never coordinate them by colour: the idea is ridiculous, tacky...

    • @mariatrotter6889

    • @Kaththee

      I could never do the books by color thing either, because I have real books I want to display and it just isn't me. Plus I have a maximalist colorful palette of contrasting colors, and I can play with my books and make them work for me. Still it is a legitimate design choice for people who don't collect books or want a real collection. I was helping a friend with her shelves and I recommended she just buy for color which she did and it worked out beautifully. Just check those titles and a bit of content, to make sure there is nothing embarrassing and against your family values.

      Exactly! A person’s bookshelves should reflect their INTERESTS not be color matched to the rest of the room. WHY ARE BOOKS DECOR?! Like I can organize my most loved books in a way that they look nice but I will never buy a book because it’s a decor piece. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Seriously, imagine being at someone's home and looking at their bookcase and seeing an interesting title. "What's this about?" "Oh I don't know I just bought it for the binding color."

    My little Jack Russell Terrier likes to stay with me so the 3 rooms where I spend most of my time with the door closed have water bowls for her. I chose them carefully to go with the rooms, thinking of them as "bling" rather than something to shamefully hide. My (soon to be finish) black and white kitchen has a red and white enamelware dog bowl, the den has a light blue and gray crockery bowl and the bedroom has a navy blue and white porcelain bowl with pastel flowers on a wooden tray.

      Regarding books, not many but the ones I have are vintage or are related of things I like. The books on the coffee table sometimes are related of what is going on at the moment. Since the elections are coming, the books on the table scape at the coffee table are books related of what happen every four years, the white house, and the declaration.

    The most dangerous words in interior decorating,"personal style",in my case that would refer to slob style,which is what I am aspiring to flee.In our home we have a vast number of well thumbed textbooks which I am assured lends nothing to decor,after many years of use they are fading and ,ahem,dusty and weigh a ton,so any library will have to be enclosed and very strong.
    My kitchen is overflowing due to a lack of cupboards,seemingly!
    My hallway is overflowing in coats and shoes,how do you do minimalist with children and grandchildren intent in trashing everything in sight?

What would be much more interesting is a vendor who makes custom book covers based on color and a title name.

    Good video but the suggestion about buying books by color astounded me! When I’m in someone’s house and they have shelves full of books they haven’t read I assume they’re phony poseurs - and if they buy books by color instead of content I know they must be illiterate.

    At 70 I have been collecting ethnic art, textiles and things I love and inherited all my life. I've always had open shelves and fill my kitchen with old Mexican bowls, Mexican banks in the shape of fruit etc. Because I have too many textiles I simply fold them stacked and they look so beautiful. Old wooden bowls from Lombok look great in every room. My point is that if you buy what you truly love it never goes out style and goes with you wherever you move. We are moving to a fairly large condo with old Italian gold fixtures and chandeliers which isn't my taste but I love the challenge of incorporating my things into a new space. Enjoy your channel and enthusiasm !

    I have just discovered your RUclips channel and have enjoyed several hours of going through one video after another. It is all very insightful and, of course helpful. However, a few things that you do puzzles me. In decorating I have always followed “form follows function“. So, for instance, having so many throw pillows on a piece of furniture that you can hardly sit down, or a beautiful vase of flowers that cut off the view of someone across the table or in another chair, or a coffee table filled with beautiful things, leaving no room for functional pieces like a cocktail or a cup of coffee, So much of this kind of decorating, I think leaves the room looking faux, and a bit pretentious. This is not meant as an insult to your obvious skills as a decorator. I am simply not making sense of why the previously mentioned techniques are used in a house that real people live in. Thanks for your show. I have subscribed and look forward to more episodes. By the way, where do you get all your energy?

It's just that for some people who have very public rooms with empty or cluttered bookshelves that would like a designer feel, this is a trick that many designers can avail themselves too. They are all real books BTW and I've discovered many great reads as a result!

      Hi Denise! As a professional designer, my focus is limited to the visual and functionality appeal of a space. So, with a video like this, my goal is to show you guys lots of ideas and options and with that, everyone can pick and choose what ideas works or resonates for them. The books by color by no means has anything to do with quality as they are a random assortment of books often
      literature (novels, historical, biographies etc) like you’d find anywhere, just with their binding jackets sorted for color. I’ve discovered a great many classics that I’ve ended up discovering this way. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙂

I can’t imagine buying books for their color, with no intention of reading them! I always organize them by genre. I may budge and organize books by color for the living room. It might be cool to use book covers to match my living room color scheme though ... I would never have thought to do something like that. My books are always with me because they are part of my soul ... it never would have occurred to me to use them as room bling. Keep being you, girl. We’ll keep watching!

    Oh, Lisa! You forgot to mention thrift stores for treasures! If you don't think that thrift stores might not have what you want, think again. I was looking for fine china. After months of looking at thrift stores, I did find they carried some very fine china. Think Mikasa and so on. At last, after looking for six or seven months, I found a fabulous set, and, I knew what it was instantly. Service for twelve of Royal Albert's Old County Roses! The entire set was $84.99, and because it was a thrift store, there were no taxes on the set. So, search out great treasures. The wonderful wooden bowl she mentions, is a style I found at Goodwill for $.349. So, if you have patience you will find what you need at thrift stores . I have patience to the inth degree and it has been a blessing of treasures. Make a day of hitting the thrift stores in your area. It is so much fun. As an extra tip, tell yourself that if you can't find what you want right away, you will keep hunting until you do. My motto is "if it isn't at a thrift store I am not buying."

    I love your taste. I love your videos. You're the only interior designer on RUclips I've found who doesn't just talk about IKEA nonstop, or milk painting furniture. I have to say though, books by color are incredibly vulgar. It makes one look illiterate. If you're desperate for the look, and have more money than god, by all means, have all of your books rebound. My grandparents did that with a lot of their books.
    If you buy color coordinated books though, it just looks like you bought books to fill space. WHY??? If you have to fill a shelf with something decorative, buy a few coffee table books that are relevant to you to throw in there, and fill the rest with interesting artwork, or decorative pieces.
    If you do have a lot of books, and want them to look better, an easy hack for a more cohesive look, that's literally free, is just taking the dust jackets off. Most book spines are pretty neutral, so that works well too. It can look impressively expensive.

    Thanks Lisa! I love your videos also this one. I love your energy. Your very last tip about the books sucks though. What I love most when I visit people is to look through their bookshelves. I want to know what they read and the last thing I think about is the look of the books, whether they are stylish or not. Books are a wonderful thing because they tell a story. I spend time with them. They are a bit like friends. Never in a million years I would want to replace my books with some empty shells. No matter how wonderful they might look from outside. What counts is the inside.

      I think you’re misunderstanding the whole book thing. These are all great books where the jackets are removed and the natural book covers are exposed... they are then arranged buy color... white jackets or beige or black whatever. You buy them sorted by color instead of title however they are real legitimate books... I’ve gotten biographies, historic books, novels, classics! It actually is availing oneself of a lottery of potential as well as making a design statement! 100% real books that might have been thrown out! It’s super cool to order them and see what you get! 🥳 thanks for the compliment and your comment!!!

    I was watching too many home designers I recall one saying enough with open kitchen shelves and then discussed it.. when Lisa said if you’re a minimalist you can stop if you’re nothing but that you can do this and that and talked about open shelves I was like ,, uhh so you can be either .. I mean I just noticed she had something for everyone and they didn’t have to be in trend it’s just if that’s you you can do this .. it was wholesome.. I think that’s experience for you but I also think it’s her personality too ..

    For those who are readers and already have tons of books like me, just organizing your books by colors makes a huge difference. I would never call my books "clutter", but it definitely looks more organized now.
    Edit- Lisa you're awesome. Your videos are always fun and informative.

      Yay, I have TONS of books, too, ( in 10 Billy bookcases!) and I'm always happiest when they're set by color tone, somehow it make me read the titles better. ;)

    Hi Lisa,
    To Lisa and all who are reading this; I hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy durning this times and always.
    New subscriber here !😁
    Love how you divided the accessories between the rooms. I completely agree with you and was the reason that make me see your not only informative but educational video, I hope you continue. As you indicated, fashion accessories are equal of home accessories...after all we have chandelier earrings 😋. In my opinion home accessories are more important since it can be the same for 4, 6, to 12 months hence you will see them and appreciate them every day. Why don't take the time and select something that is as unique as you are? I personally spend time in researching until I find the piece that speak to me and get along with the other pieces already have. I'm not an expert BUT I had learn about quality..they speak to each other. I found an Edward Farrell gorgeous custom sofa (chenille fabric, sable/green color) , I was trying to find pillows and I found some, green and cyan other black and gold ...no matter want I did nothing was working. They weren't talking to each other ( it that can make any sense ..lol). Then I started analyzing why this wasn't working and I came to the conclusion, the use of the lower quality pillows was doing the opposite of elevating the design, wasn't pleasant to the eyes. The color maybe right but the quality was not.
    I found the pillows, the lady I bought the sofa from, just change her mind regarding some pillows and she decided to sell them, yes I bought ALL of them at a very good price for the quality. They look amazing with the sofa and with the Baker black barrel side chairs that also I bought from her .
    Side note;
    OK...OK.., I got a "little" crazy with so many gorgeous things, I bought other items , mainly accessories and other stuff...no regrets since I enjoy them every day.
    Thanks for your time in reading.
    Be safe, Be healthy, Be well.
    Maria

    But I dont want stuff cluttering my counters.
    I like clear counters. Flowers are pretty but in a few days I want them gone.

    Absolutely love you channel. Bling ideas are always the hardest for me. I tend towards minimalism. This being the case my bling must have meaning to live in my space. I find the thought of books by the yard or color abhorrent.

    Frames with pictures of ones children is not good in the bedroom. Who wants to be intimate with our children watching? Ick.

    Now it's funny but my eye went right to the large picture in the room that had a touch of red in it and across the room on the table there was red to me helped tie everything in. The room where you talk about the puffs 😅

    You have a lot of really good advice [ except for the matching book colors ]. My family had an art gallery for many years and subsequently we visited a lot of homes helping the homeowner to make a choice with their art. In my experience most people are not very confident in their decorating choices and need lots of reassuring. The nicest and most welcoming homes, in my opinion were those that had a tendency towards a unique and personal style. Where every single thing looked like the homeowner took great pleasure in choosing. The homes that looked lived in. The worst were homes that looked like show homes. These always felt cold and unoccupied.

    When you add a throw to the bed, do we need to be mindful of different textiles? I mean, is there a rule for mixing textiles?

    Lisa, I'm loving all these ideas. They can kick your space up a notch or two :) I'm wondering if you have a small space is it appropriate to just add one item. When does it begin to look cluttered? Thanks again for all your excellent tips!

    • @LisaHoltDesign
      @LisaHoltDesign  4 года назад +1

      Hi Nancy, Great question! Yes, if you have a smaller space (cocktail table, etc) you can do 1 item, but it needs to be the right scale, FAB, and stand on it's own. If the surface is any larger, you need to move to either 2 (matching pair) or 3 (the rule of three) and stop there. Thx so much for watching!

    Travels. One of my favorite sources was (and will be again): travels. In 2019, I got to go to Ireland. I bought a modestly priced (but suitable for framing) map of Ireland. Now, I have a lovely framed map of Ireland on the wall! My personal shopping guidelines include “packability”. But that’s just a guideline: I bought some crystal at the Waterford factory and splurged on shipping.
    For me, it’s decor + memories.

      OMG MC, I have been to Ireland before and LOVED IT!! 😍 I used to travel so much when I was younger, I miss it 😢 That is SO smart to shop for packability!!! 👍

    Order books by color????? Now I've heard everything!!! lol. I have custom bookcases in every home I've lived in because I have so many books. Which. I've. Read. Last time I moved, I (painfully) got rid of about 1/2 of my books, had yet another wall of bookcases made in my new home and, still, the books I'd brought with me overflow. Ah well. For me, a home without well-loved books is just a house. It's a riot of colors and they aren't artfully placed on the shelves, but it definitely tells everyone who I am. It's my all-consuming love affair.
