I have mix and match Ethan Allen dinning room. But if I had to have the dinning table I would prefer the matched chairs. 🤣 The matched set fades away for me. The mix and match would scream I have a cheap set trying to be stylish. 🤷🏼♂️ Do what makes u happy

To those here saying that it looks cheap, mismatched stuff looks great so long as it matches. By that I mean, while it might not be a set, it has to have commonality-same colour tones, same design vibe. No Victorian chairs with a MCM table, for instance. That’s what makes it look like you couldn’t afford it so you raided your gramma’s garage.

People don't buy futons because they're cheap couches, they buy futons because they need a guest bed and don't have the room for one! They make nicer futons (or pull outs!) that don't scream dorm that would have been a better comparable item than a bean bag chair.

Of seen full day beds that take a full mattress. That's actually what I'm getting for a family Room so that you can sit on it but if I have company I can put them down there with the 3 piece bath right next to them and they can have their own little suite.

People buy futons as sleeping spaces. Could you share some affordable options for people who need furniture that converts into a sleeping option? I have a guest bedroom but sometimes I have too many guests and run into this issue. I want something... but I also don't want to clutter my space with more huge furniture.

I mentioned elsewhere that I have no issue with futons when I need multi-purpose furniture. I've tended to favor them because 90% of hide-a-bed mattresses totally suck - and that's being kind. But when I had futons, they had really nice wooden frames, not the cheap metal frames ones shown in the video. I particularly liked Mission/Arts and Crafts and Oriental-inspired frames.
I hope your list includes decor from the dollar spot near the front door, and the crappy furniture that has to assembled. Lastly, the lamp aisle is appalling.

@@LisaHoltDesign I'm afraid that a lot of the negative comments about "mismatched" (?) or "mix-matched" tables & chairs/furniture (the dining room set, the bedroom set, etc) are imagining a table with six different chairs from six different design styles. As I understand it, avoiding sets doesn't mean you choose chairs (for example) randomly; the chairs must "play well" with the table and other furnishings in the room. This is very different from randomly adding stuff (even if you "like" it). Perhaps you could add to your to do list a video that walks us through what works together and what doesn't. Maybe do a 'splainer that shows furniture "sets" before and after. You probably feel like you've covered this, and you probably have, but I think a more concrete demonstration may help. There's a good reason Grranimals no longer exist.

You always inspire me! I inherited much of my furniture, including a matching set of outdoor Tropitone table, chairs and the works! As I was thinking about room dividers, I remembered one we have in storage. It was my grandmother's from the 1920s. I have an enclosed back porch with a long farmhouse table that we share with our two cats. We eat there on Sundays or when we have a crowd, but I've always been sensitive to their litter box. I may drag the ole divider out and see how it works there! Their own little privacy bath!!

Or don't buy furniture at all from Target...look on Craigslist etc. for good quality/wood/timeless pieces of furniture, from those that are downsizing...you can add 'trendy' inexpensive items to susz it up from Target (decor, rugs, pillows, throws, etc.) instead...!

Hm. I love (love!) Lisa Holt, but this Target content was confusing. I genuinely can't believe she really thinks that stuff is good. Replace the folding couch with the Levi's dorm furniture? Sorry, but all that stuff is crappy. Every. Last. Piece. Target is good for SOME stuff, but furniture is not one of them. Mass-produced and totally made to break. Go to the thrift store and buy some solid wooden furniture. Still, I love Lisa Holt. I think she is just trying to give people what they want.

You may recall, Target used to have much higher quality items - and by "used to" I mean 15-20 years ago (and before). Now I admit, I'm not ONLY talking about home decor or furniture. In fact I really can't speak to furniture at all because I've never purchased more than a small stool as far as furniture. I'm mostly talking about general decor (including Holiday items) and clothing. I know those items are not the subject of your video, but just thought I'd mention since overall, Target is less and less the place I'd go for most anything.

I would never buy furniture at Target. Never. It's garbage. All of the Sauder stuff is particle board. The Joanna Gaines stuff is cheaply made and over-priced. Go to a consignment shop. Shop at the Goodwill or Salvation Army in wealthy neighborhoods. Target is good for bed and bath linens but never - never - buy furniture there.

I worked at Target (many moons ago) and have always said (based on customer returns) never to buy furniture from Target. It's cheaply made; but not only cheap, it's cheesy looking.

LOL, I went for the futon but not THAT futon! I coughed up the money and bought a solid wood, stylish white, 3 different degrees of reclining futon, that turns into a full size bed, with a good mattress, and coastal blue patterned cover. Then I accented it with coastal pillows and a cozy throw blanket. It’s in the TV room. I did pair it with a boho pouf. It looks amazing and you never know when you’ll need an extra bed with kids and their friends. I agree there’s a lot of downright ugly and useless futons out there that would never hold up, but you’re the lady who can find them if any can. Love your shows! They inspire me, just not THAT futon. It gives a bad name to futons.

Here as promised (finally)! 😀 I enjoyed this video, even though I don’t live near any Targets! I feel lots of these concepts can be applied to other low-cost furniture stores, though. Confession time: I’m trying desperately to like cane and rattan, but I just don’t, so there were a few items in this video that I didn’t exactly understand. Beanbag furniture is also something I will have to acquire a love for (bad past experiences!) although I suppose the pouf is a bit more forgivable. 😄 However, I must say that the tables, chairs, and room dividers you chose are delightful! What I love about this video (besides that trademark vivacious energy!) is the idea of moving past sets of furniture and learning to coordinate items that are different. Years ago I used to be a big fan of “What Not To Wear” on TLC, and the hosts, Stacey and Clinton, would always talk about the difference between items “matching” and “going”: when things match, it looks like there’s no originality, but when they go with each other, you can tell there’s been some curation, and a style develops out of it. If that’s what you like, your season is coming up. Take a nice weekend vacation to a shore town and check out antique shops, second hand shops, and small boutiques. You might find some deals and unusual pieces at craft fairs set up in shore towns. Check their calendars in the local papers to see where and when. Go early. Good luck.

I have lots of comments about this video. But, some people are in their 20s and 30s and would love her choices. Also, I do not do Target. The few times I have gone I could not find the item I was looking for and once I was in line more than 20 minutes because the one guy ahead of me was paying with a $100 bill and no one could find a pen/verify the bill was real. I absolutely like the ideas for table, chairs, room dividers, but, your solutions for the futon and desk did not address solutions that address the functionality issues. For example, a futon folds out, thus another person can sleep on it overnight (not this one, though, agree it is ugly). This corner desk, though gag inducing, fits...a corner!! My son’s room in our newest rent house is tiny, thus, every square inch of space must be utilized (not the triangle of unused space created by the desk you suggest, but agree that it is cute as a button). I am searching FB Marketplace for a small corner desk for his space that would allow him to sit at to use his laptop and still allows space for him to step around his bed. All your other suggestions-specifically table and chairs-are so very cute!

Why am I looking to buy a futon couch? It's not for a college dorm room. I've a small room that's used as an office for my writing and video blogging. The couch will be in the background. Here's why I'm considering a futon. These couches can be pulled out and turned into a temporary guest bed. I'd have liked to have heard an alternative solution and not a "Don't buy this..". Do I shop at Target? No and I don't consider it, upscale. It's a Walmart type store.

People get futons for guests to sleep on, not for extra "seating options". No, not ideal, but an acceptable option if you have limited space and need something that can convert to a temporary bed. That awful bean bag thing and butterfly chair scream teen girl to me. Just looking at them is uncomfortable. Love the cane desk..... for looks, but if you want to be truly "on trend" you wouldn't have a desk at all. No one uses them anymore. At least no one young. Laptops make them obsolete.

I agree the desk isn't pretty, but the tiny replacement you suggested looks like kid furniture. You can't sleep on a beanbag chair. Rattan furniture in the hot sun lasts a year or two tops, so isn't practical at all. I would have loved a "buy this not that" with more function in mind.

I have kids and 3 dogs. They busted the beanbag chair in no time flat. Finding style makes this my go to channel. Finding style that’s built for a war zone takes a little more effort and of course, money.

I can’t mix and match wood furniture well, so for the dining room I just bought parsons chairs with legs in a tone that matches my table.
Me too. I think the mismatched stuff looks like a person went from sale to another. It's just a trend.
To those here saying that it looks cheap, mismatched stuff looks great so long as it matches. By that I mean, while it might not be a set, it has to have commonality-same colour tones, same design vibe. No Victorian chairs with a MCM table, for instance. That’s what makes it look like you couldn’t afford it so you raided your gramma’s garage.

People don't buy futons because they're cheap couches, they buy futons because they need a guest bed and don't have the room for one! They make nicer futons (or pull outs!) that don't scream dorm that would have been a better comparable item than a bean bag chair.

Of seen full day beds that take a full mattress. That's actually what I'm getting for a family Room so that you can sit on it but if I have company I can put them down there with the 3 piece bath right next to them and they can have their own little suite.

I mentioned elsewhere that I have no issue with futons when I need multi-purpose furniture. I've tended to favor them because 90% of hide-a-bed mattresses totally suck - and that's being kind. But when I had futons, they had really nice wooden frames, not the cheap metal frames ones shown in the video. I particularly liked Mission/Arts and Crafts and Oriental-inspired frames.
I hope your list includes decor from the dollar spot near the front door, and the crappy furniture that has to assembled. Lastly, the lamp aisle is appalling.

@@LisaHoltDesign I'm afraid that a lot of the negative comments about "mismatched" (?) or "mix-matched" tables & chairs/furniture (the dining room set, the bedroom set, etc) are imagining a table with six different chairs from six different design styles. As I understand it, avoiding sets doesn't mean you choose chairs (for example) randomly; the chairs must "play well" with the table and other furnishings in the room. This is very different from randomly adding stuff (even if you "like" it). Perhaps you could add to your to do list a video that walks us through what works together and what doesn't. Maybe do a 'splainer that shows furniture "sets" before and after.
You probably feel like you've covered this, and you probably have, but I think a more concrete demonstration may help.

You always inspire me! I inherited much of my furniture, including a matching set of outdoor Tropitone table, chairs and the works! As I was thinking about room dividers, I remembered one we have in storage. It was my grandmother's from the 1920s. I have an enclosed back porch with a long farmhouse table that we share with our two cats. We eat there on Sundays or when we have a crowd, but I've always been sensitive to their litter box. I may drag the ole divider out and see how it works there! Their own little privacy bath!!

Hm. I love (love!) Lisa Holt, but this Target content was confusing. I genuinely can't believe she really thinks that stuff is good. Replace the folding couch with the Levi's dorm furniture? Sorry, but all that stuff is crappy. Every. Last. Piece. Target is good for SOME stuff, but furniture is not one of them. Mass-produced and totally made to break. Go to the thrift store and buy some solid wooden furniture. Still, I love Lisa Holt. I think she is just trying to give people what they want.

You may recall, Target used to have much higher quality items - and by "used to" I mean 15-20 years ago (and before). Now I admit, I'm not ONLY talking about home decor or furniture. In fact I really can't speak to furniture at all because I've never purchased more than a small stool as far as furniture. I'm mostly talking about general decor (including Holiday items) and clothing. I know those items are not the subject of your video, but just thought I'd mention since overall, Target is less and less the place I'd go for most anything.

I would never buy furniture at Target. Never. It's garbage. All of the Sauder stuff is particle board. The Joanna Gaines stuff is cheaply made and over-priced. Go to a consignment shop. Shop at the Goodwill or Salvation Army in wealthy neighborhoods. Target is good for bed and bath linens but never - never - buy furniture there.

I worked at Target (many moons ago) and have always said (based on customer returns) never to buy furniture from Target. It's cheaply made; but not only cheap, it's cheesy looking.
I hardly ever shop there anymore. Got burned too many times. Looks great, but the quality is awful.

LOL, I went for the futon but not THAT futon! I coughed up the money and bought a solid wood, stylish white, 3 different degrees of reclining futon, that turns into a full size bed, with a good mattress, and coastal blue patterned cover. Then I accented it with coastal pillows and a cozy throw blanket. It’s in the TV room. I did pair it with a boho pouf. It looks amazing and you never know when you’ll need an extra bed with kids and their friends. I agree there’s a lot of downright ugly and useless futons out there that would never hold up, but you’re the lady who can find them if any can. Love your shows! They inspire me, just not THAT futon. It gives a bad name to futons.

About the studio McGhee dining table... table top is made of MDF. I don’t think people will be happy with it in a few years...
Some of those MDF pieces contain toxic chemicals - be careful especially around kids and pregnant women. ( everybody really)
You can't sleep on those individual chairs. People buy Futons for practical reasons. Those chairs are NOT practical.

I enjoyed this video, even though I don’t live near any Targets! I feel lots of these concepts can be applied to other low-cost furniture stores, though.
Confession time: I’m trying desperately to like cane and rattan, but I just don’t, so there were a few items in this video that I didn’t exactly understand. Beanbag furniture is also something I will have to acquire a love for (bad past experiences!) although I suppose the pouf is a bit more forgivable. 😄 However, I must say that the tables, chairs, and room dividers you chose are delightful!
What I love about this video (besides that trademark vivacious energy!) is the idea of moving past sets of furniture and learning to coordinate items that are different. Years ago I used to be a big fan of “What Not To Wear” on TLC, and the hosts, Stacey and Clinton, would always talk about the difference between items “matching” and “going”: when things match, it looks like there’s no originality, but when they go with each other, you can tell there’s been some curation, and a style develops out of it.

If that’s what you like, your season is coming up. Take a nice weekend vacation to a shore town and check out antique shops, second hand shops, and small boutiques. You might find some deals and unusual pieces at craft fairs set up in shore towns. Check their calendars in the local papers to see where and when. Go early. Good luck.

I have lots of comments about this video. But, some people are in their 20s and 30s and would love her choices. Also, I do not do Target. The few times I have gone I could not find the item I was looking for and once I was in line more than 20 minutes because the one guy ahead of me was paying with a $100 bill and no one could find a pen/verify the bill was real. Nope!

I absolutely like the ideas for table, chairs, room dividers, but, your solutions for the futon and desk did not address solutions that address the functionality issues. For example, a futon folds out, thus another person can sleep on it overnight (not this one, though, agree it is ugly). This corner desk, though gag inducing, fits...a corner!! My son’s room in our newest rent house is tiny, thus, every square inch of space must be utilized (not the triangle of unused space created by the desk you suggest, but agree that it is cute as a button). I am searching FB Marketplace for a small corner desk for his space that would allow him to sit at to use his laptop and still allows space for him to step around his bed. All your other suggestions-specifically table and chairs-are so very cute!

Why am I looking to buy a futon couch? It's not for a college dorm room. I've a small room that's used as an office for my writing and video blogging. The couch will be in the background. Here's why I'm considering a futon. These couches can be pulled out and turned into a temporary guest bed. I'd have liked to have heard an alternative solution and not a "Don't buy this..". Do I shop at Target? No and I don't consider it, upscale. It's a Walmart type store.

@@greenlimabean I can’t imagine how makeup would end up in the holes of the door fronts; at least not with the type of routine I have. And to clean it I imagine I’d just use a fluffy duster.

People get futons for guests to sleep on, not for extra "seating options". No, not ideal, but an acceptable option if you have limited space and need something that can convert to a temporary bed. That awful bean bag thing and butterfly chair scream teen girl to me. Just looking at them is uncomfortable. Love the cane desk..... for looks, but if you want to be truly "on trend" you wouldn't have a desk at all. No one uses them anymore. At least no one young. Laptops make them obsolete.
That desk is fabulous sure wish Target never left Canada 🇨🇦

I love her videos and this is totally unrelated; but, does anybody know what watch she is wearing? I am sure it’s a prop because the watch is stuck at 12:00 in every single video she’s wearing it. I agree the desk isn't pretty, but the tiny replacement you suggested looks like kid furniture. You can't sleep on a beanbag chair. Rattan furniture in the hot sun lasts a year or two tops, so isn't practical at all. I would have loved a "buy this not that" with more function in mind.

I have kids and 3 dogs. They busted the beanbag chair in no time flat. Finding style makes this my go to channel. Finding style that’s built for a war zone takes a little more effort and of course, money.
I'd rather repurpose an antique than spend money on particle board junk from Target.

The question is, how do these replacement ideas compare price wise? Chances are if people are looking at those cheap looking pieces it's because its in there budget.
