I was there in1997 on May 25 and we could not get out of the tent until 11:00 bc tent frozen. Next 4 day were absolutely gorgeous. Of course I’m from Mississippi and when we left it was 90° and humid. This is before the Internet so we were definitely unprepared. I’m trying to convince my wife to fly out with our for kids in mid to late June because the flights are cheaper from the dirty south. Good luck, just thought I would share. Have fun!!! 😎✌️

Late September worked great for us, I'll go back someday when we get our camper van so it's easier to stay places and get around. That Beartooth Highway route is worth the drive, if it's out of your way.

Going first week in October staying in cody can't wait its our first trip
Have been around April 16-18 one year. I loved it. Few people. Few elk, some bear out, moose out, bison starting calving. Saw newborn calves. Weather snow, sun , rain, nights cold. Been there Memorial weekend. Better weather, elk back and calving, all bears out. Been there in summer. Roads gridlock with people. This year 2021 there is road construction projects. I will be there early May this year

Late May is the one to go for
Yeah im up here it's 4/15/2022 and I'm heading south bc there's no point seeing Teton or Yellowstone other than no ppl but the roads are terrible and it's cloudy and snowy so not much to see.
I'm thinking of coming back in the beginning of May.

I am learning alot also. We were supposed to be going to Alaska but decided to cancel and go to Yellowstone and Grand Teton instead. We will be there May 3rd and staying 11 days. We just came back from Grand Teton and Yellowstone (Jan 30 - Feb 7). We rode snowmobile and snowcoach in Yellowstone. It is magical to see the quiet park in winter. We have been to Yellowstone in summer. It's also beautiful but very crowded. I think it's a special treat to be able to see the winter wonderland just because it is weather dependent and much harder to plan.

I will add this: My only trip has been at end of Feb, 2020 for a XC Ski/ Snow Yurt stay. It was fab for those winter outdoor enthusiasts and booking a room before the yurt stay at Snowlodge is very special. I can not say enough about winter and the Yurt Expedition group in the park out of West.
I do want badly to see Yellowstone in every season, if possible.

Planning our first trip next year in mid-September. This confirms that we are choosing a pretty good time (hoping for a late(r) winter)! Man, I’ve never wanted a year of my life to pass by faster...can’t wait!

Your guide using maps is brilliant! Thank you so much. Any tips for a 3 days trip during xmas in Grand Teton, we are from Fl, taking teens to see snow for the first time. skiing is not on the list, we prefer nature and snow tubing. Thanks
During Christmas!! How cool. We’ve done some thanksgivings there before. Must visit the Elk Refuge to see the elk and go on a sleigh ride. Also could take a dog sled ride to Granite Hot Springs and then soak in the springs. Jackson Hole Iditarod Sled Dog tours. Could maybe book a wildlife tour through Jackson eco tours. You can also go snow showing in the park. Rent from Dornan’s I believe.

Don't go in August. My family and I went there in August in the 1950s and camped in a tent. It was so cold we wore our pajamas under our day clothes and our day clothes under our pajamas. It was also rainy. So if you go pack warm clothes because you never know when you might need them. God bless.
The weather can definitely be tricky. It's best to check the high's and low's on the weather app and plan accordingly. Bring many layers.

I hate the crowds but I hate driving in snow more LOL. We're getting there June 7 for four days. It's right after Memorial Day so hopefully it will be a little less crowded.

Excellent description of the weather conditions and traffic issues. One major issue to be addressed for summer visits: traffic jams are huge due to large crowds. We’ve visited all seasons, and our favorite time is late May. I’m a photographer, and the wildflowers are all over the place. Also, most of the animals have birthed their young, and wildlife photography is terrific. We make sure that we spend a lot of our time in Hayden Valley. Moose and calves are especially numerous. One more plus about late May: the Spring air is fresh and clean, great for vigorous day hikes and bright photography! We sure enjoy your videos!

Gregg, as a photographer, what do you recommend for a basic intro camera for people who aren’t photographers but want to get a nicer camera to take pictures of wildlife?
It’s tough to give an objective answer, not knowing your $$ range. Giving your question some real serious thought, I’m thinking that the fairly new iPhone 12 Pro might be a perfect fit for you as a teacher and a RUclips professional author! The iPhone 12 has some magnificent optics and photographic capabilities. And it has terrific video capabilities also. For you and all your travels, you won’t want bulky equipment like a camera body, two expensive zoom lenses, maybe a tripod for distant animal shots, etc. Since you’re not in the reprint business, you don’t need large image files; the iPhone jpeg file is plenty large enough for your needs. Long explanation short: I think the iPhone 12 Pro would be perfect for you. I’m seriously considering buying one to update my equipment. Both the still and video capabilities look terrific. Please keep me tuned in as to what you decide. Good luck.
Great video and informations, thank you 🙏 I’m planning to visit Yellowstone for the second time this year on late may 2023 (flight booked 🥰) the first time I visited was early June 2019 and I had a great weather, clear blue sky, greenery everywhere, rivers running, majestic bisons with their babies, bears, I felt like it’s a piece of paradise 🤩 I found it was little bit crowded for an early June period, with many Asian groups, maybe because of the great weather or maybe it was on a weekend day but it was great. Love Yellowstone, the most beautiful wild place in the US and in the world. Greetings from France 🇫🇷

Late May is a wonderful time to visit if you want to see wildlife particularly bears. I visited then with the family several years ago and we saw 11 bears in the park. My sister also Visited Yellowstone in late may the next year and saw over 20 bears. We saw them all over the park not just in Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley. I have visited Yellowstone 13 times but that was the 1st time in May
How was the weather when you went In May did it cooperate?

Good video. We have the advantage of Home Schooling: NO pubic school PC nonsense, AND we can go off season. We went in early October and it was perfect, no crowds, all attractions open (but only two Visitor Centers). Our NP’s are God’s country.

I just got back from yellowstone yesterday. I was there for 6 days. The mornings i would recommend pants, sweatshirt, jacket, gloves & hat. As soon as 10am/11am hits, it starts to warm up. It was never hot but too warm to keep the gloves, jacket, etc on. I brought layers so i could take them off in late morning/noon. Weather is unpredictable. My wife always wore a sweatshirt in the afternoon & she said she was never too warm. Better to b safe than sry & pack extra clothing
Also September after labor day wasnt crowded at all!

@@Forleaftaback yes me too! After labor day, the kids are already in school, weather is PERFECT! & with less crowds u can really take advantage of hiking, & viewing wildlife in peace lol!!! I hope u hav a great time...we certainly did. If u visit the grand prismatic spring...i would recommend going in the afternoon. We went at around 7 or 8am & we could barely see the beautiful colors & we were right infront of it on the boardwalk. It was very foggy. I think it was due to the heat of prismatic spring & 34 degree weather combining to create the fog. Either way, we had a blast. Have fun!

We visited in May. We got in one day and it snowed that night. The park was closed for one day. The day after the snow, it took them until almost noon to get the roads open. People who had entered the park from one direction could not get back. They had to drive seven hours around to get back. Really have to be willing to deal with weather. There was also no elk in the park. We saw no buffalo in the park. Not a great time to see animals. Snow and mud. Moving around can be slippery and dangerous. I visit Yellowstone almost every month it is open. They all have unique opportunities. Decide what you think your vacation will look like. That dictates the month you want to go. If you pick items from all seasons to do in one vacation. Ya, that is not going to happen. Pack you winter clothes and be ready for everything. I walk in rain/snow about half the days.
Exactly. Yellowstone has some extreme, unpredictable weather. I agree that there is somethings unique about each season. I loved the wild flowers that were in bloom when we visited last July.

It all depends on the air temperature. The colder the air temperature, the more mist there will be hovering over the water, making it harder to see.
We are going there mid April through West entrance. According to the map and time schedule, do we need to drive back to the West entrance and down through Driggs and such if we want to go Jackson. We are staying in Jackson because we make our way back down to Moab without passing SLC.
No! Google maps is “wrong” right now because the roads are closed in winter. But they will be open by the time you go.

I just looked at one and it was $375 for one day for a family of four. I’m a big fan of tours but Yellowstone takes multiple days to see it, and a daily tour would be crazy expensive. My guide gives you a step by step. And the audio will tell you all about the park. I’m sure there are other guides out there as well. Just giving you options.

Mmmm, maybe. You’d have to just see Mt Rushmore and move on, missing some of the best stuff in the Black Hills. Then it takes about a day to drive to Yellowstone. Then you could spend 2-3 days in Yellowstone before driving back.

We have no option but to visit Yellowstone during Thanksgiving. What do you suggest?
I do not suggest going over Thanksgiving. As of today, Yellowstone's website says, "Most park roads are closed to prepare for the winter season and snowmobile and snowcoach travel, which will begin Thursday, December 15. The road between the North Entrance and the Northeast Entrance is open year-round." If you go over Thanksgiving, you will only be able to drive one road (and the park won't be open for snowmobiles yet at that time either). The end of May is typically the golden time for that. Fewer crowds, animals are stirring all over the place. The other option is in the middle of winter -- the bears are hibernating but you can get great shots of the wolves as they are very active.
If we visit in late Sept. is there a good chance to see bears?
Yes for sure, they don’t go into hibernation until November usually

@@sportsbro2220 Cool! Well, there are three reasons why you might still want it: 1) I do give a game plan for four days, but I also list A & B sites for each day. You may want to return and do B sites on your extra days. 2) are you doing Grand Teton? With that many days, I would suggest trying to get down there for a little bit. 3) I have an audio guide that will tell you all about the stories behind the park.
Not trying to "sell" you on it too much, but if you like my videos, I think you'll like the guide. Even my itinerary has cool info (not just a list of places to go). I really spent a lot of time on it.

Haha. Well, I have a grand Teton section on my channel (and I already finished my audio guide on that one). The Teton mountains are really quite special. And lots of wildlife there as well, including moose. Don’t want to throw off all your plans or anything, lol, but watch a few of my videos and see what you think
There is another element to add why you should not visit in July, August, and early September. In the past few years due to climate change, there has been an increase in wildfires burning throughout the West. Our family visited Glacier NP and western last July for two weeks. For virtually that whole time, there was excessive amounts of wildfire smoke in the air plus the temperatures were much warmer. Visitors need to start to adjust their travel plans to avoid visiting western national parks and forests in the summer months.
