True story:
Since our family trip got canceled thanks to Covid back in 2020, we decided to go in July of 2022. Because of the alternative license plate entrance rule we were able to visit Yellowstone with only a fraction of the usual amount of people. The weather was perfect! We stayed just outside of west Yellowstone and on the way there at dusk inside the park between old faithful and the entrance we spotted a black bear! My husband and our kids literally screamed and we immediately parked, jumped out and got some great footage. Just then I kid you not! A gray wolf ran right in front of us and darted across the road. It was pretty dang awesome and my husbands favorite memory of all of our family trips. We love Yellowstone!!

My wife and myself just came back from a 2900 mile 6 day road trip to Sioux Falls-badlands-wall-mt Rushmore-needles highway-big horn national forest scenery- Cody-Yellowstone-riverton-scottsbluff monument-Sandhills byway-Lincoln all the way from Springfield MO! I watched a few videos of yours beforehand that were useful! Thank you Matt and Cheryl for giving super good info about the locations and your guidance to navigate this terrain! We stayed at the Roosevelt lodge cabin for a night inside Yellowstone. Wyoming is stunning and the badlands and the black hills were awesome as well. we’ll cherish this trip for a long time. Thanks again!

Reliving our trip last year through this video! We had an amazing time and your videos were so helpful for our planning! We only spent one day in Yellowstone, because we’re “hiking” type of vacationers so we spent more time in the Tetons, but Yellowstone is a must for anyone. So beautiful!! We were lucky enough to see a grizzly bear (and bison running from it) in Hayden Valley. Amazing trip. Love all your tips! We’ll have to go back another time and visit the northern loop!
We have a cabin 30 minutes from West Yellowstone and therefore are very familiar with the Park. I'd say the Tower area is where you will most likely spot a black bear. We've also had pretty good luck with moose outside of West Yellowstone near the Baker's Hole Campground. Also, we've spotted moose multiple times in the Northeast Entrance area near Soda Butte Creek. We've seen grizzlies all over the Park. The mountains close to the NE Entrance are known to have mountain goats walking on ledges. A pair of binoculars are needed to spot them.
Also, to me the best time to see wildlife, especially bears, is May. A ranger told us that May is the best time to see grizzlies. As summer approaches, they move up to higher elevations to search for food, making them harder to find close to the road.

Great video of the current events at Yellowstone Park. I was there in 2016 and it was amazing. I'm going back and wanted to see what has changed and up to date. Your video was so helpful. The part that caught my attention was the comment about the food at Yellowstone. My ex wife and I ordered a burger and I can't believe how bad the burger was. I thought...geez, how can you ruin a burger. Somehow they managed that perfectly.

Great video! I spend my summers in Cooke City and we often have visitors fly into Billings or Cody, too. Also, Cooke is a great place to see moose. We get them in the yard and see them from the road quite often. Thanks for the great Yellowstone content!

I'm from NJ too. What stops are you making along this 2000+ mile trip? I see two national parks on the way. I'm coming near end of April

Headed south to Ga then along to gulf. We will stop at the Grand Canyon over to the hover dam, north to Moab, most of the parks heading North to Yellowstone and working our way back across I90.

I just started reviewing my guide and downloaded the audio and I am SO impressed! Just returned from our trip to Yellowstone and Grant Teton. Your videos were a great help for planning. It rained during our 2 days in Grand Teton. It was still a gorgeous place and we saw a moose and calf. It would be fantastic for you to do a video of "What to do if the weather isn't great."

On our trip to Yellowstone, we purchased the Guide! We love the guide and the audio recordings! Thank you so much. Happy traveling and thanks so much for the outstanding guide! As they recommend, be flexible. For 2023, the park has several construction projects and a few 1 lane only areas! If you are going, get the guide! It is so valuable to see everything you ever wanted and even more! Also, before entering the park, stop at a grocery and bring in food. This allows for maximum flexibility!

I've been to Yellowstone two years in a row. Both times were late May . The late season snow hampered me a little bit both times. I do love seeing the park covered in snow. I'm going in late June is year and it's specifically for fly fishing this year.

Hi, we're from the UK and have done lots of road trips all over the USA and Canada. We will be paying our third visit to Yellowstone next week after flying into Denver, so we will be renewing our visits to Cheyenne, Casper, Cody and through Yellowstone to Idaho and Oregon. Your video is excellent and we concur with everything you've shown, such as, the waterfalls, geysers, canyons etc, An excellent planner video and well done. At the last count we've visited 37 U.S. States including Hawaii and Alaska, and all of Canada except Manitoba and Saskatchewan, so we love our holiday trips.

very beautiful video. We spent 2 weeks in Yellowstone in autumn 2013, 3 weeks in spring 2017 and now we are flying back to the USA on May 22nd and will then spend 4 weeks in Yellowstone. We always rent scopes from Optics Yellowstone 😍

Billings is a little over 2 hour drive to the north entrance so it's a good place to fly into.
We are going to Yellowstone (from the UK) at end of April and I'm so glad I watched this video. For some reason I didn't think there could be even a chance of snow in May, how wrong was I! Thank you for this informative video and wish us luck :)

We do not personally know of a professional guide from SLC but we know there are tour groups. A quick google search should help get you on your way.

We had our trip planned last year, but when we were ready to leave Ohio that awful flood stopped us.
We went to Maine instead. It was gorgeous up there on the ocean. I'll definitely be going back.
I live right outside of Shawnee state forest, so I'm used to beautiful nature, and always craving more. I don't like to do touristy, expensive crap. I want to enjoy what our creators gave us.

You guys are literally the best! Thank you for putting all of this together. Quick question for you - when traveling from Grand Teton to Yellowstone, is there a particular path that is both scenic but NOT white-knuckle? LOL
You can go one of two ways, either will be beautiful. You can use Hwy 191, or you can Teton Park Road. If you're heading back to Grand Teton on a return trip, drive each one. Teton Park Road will get you closer to the mountains and lakes.

Believe it or not by me traveling Solo I really don't need an expensive hotel and I eat like a bird. My big deal is seeing whatever I can n enjoying life, because my job is so hectic. I see death daily,so I made a vow to enjoy and see the world even if I do it alone

I was packing my bags last year when I put on RVmiles and he said, before I start I just want to inform you that Yellowstone is closed due to floods. I thought it was an old video so I went back to see when the video was posted and it said 3hrs ago. Well the good thing is I didn't drive there and then find out.
We stayed in Cody in 2014 on our 5 week road trip to Yellowstone from Florida. In Cody the best B & B to stay at was Robin’s Nest. Owners, Robin and Bob were amazing & friendly and took the time to show us around the town. We loved our week in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for a few days

Our backpack group took a multi week hike from Tetons to Yellowstone. We saw sights-only a very few ever see. Was also a firefighter during the big fire.

I have been to the Tetons twice now and have never seen a moose. It’s crazy. I know they are everywhere down there so I am really counting on seeing one this time. Matt says 95% chance, so I am really hoping and crossing my fingers that the third time is a charm this year. This donation is for all you do for us people visiting. And here is my word. We were in the Tetons Oct, 2022. We saw moose early in the morning (7 am) on Moose Wilson Road near the park Visitor Center, good luck!
@@MooseAndersonProductions Try to hit Gros Ventre River early morning 6-7 or late at night. Had 4 moose sightings there in a 2 day period. Also had one on the Jenny lake trail hike and a absolute massive one on the Phelps lake loop trail. Moose Wilson road is good too. In total I had 6 sightings in a 2 day period. It’s about being at the right place at the right time tbh. Didn’t see any bears though. Headed to Yellowstone today.

Oh, and as for Xanterra, we had booked a 1 week Yellowstone tour with them, meals & lodging & bus excursions included. They did a fantastic job. Our meals varied but a different place every night and could eat anything on the menus

@@WereintheRockies Us too! We only got one night there and then went to Jackson earlier than planned. I’m not sure if it happens all the time, but we got a notice of 25% off at Thanksgiving for Xanterra properties. So we decided to try again. Fingers crossed for no natural disasters.

You can fly into a Idaho Falls airport. Which is one hour 48 mins from West Yellowstone. It is a small airport but in summer has some good deals.

It's easy to see moose in Yellowstone. You just have to be in the Pebble Creek campground area around dawn.

Hey Matt and Cheryl! I bought your itineraries for YS & Glacier. I've been watching lots of your videos as well. 😊 We are driving from WI this summer and planning to hit YS for 3 days, Teton for 1 day, then driving up to Glacier for 2 days. We'll be entering YS from Silver Gate (Grizzly Lodge) because I really want to drive the Beartooth Hwy. We'll have our 6 kids with us (ages 11 down to 2). After entering from Silver Gate, we plan to spend a couple of hours in Lamar (the kids won't take a lot of sitting and waiting, so we won't be spending hours watching wildlife, but hoping to see some!), then heading to Tower Falls. We're combining American Serengeti and Welcome to Wonderland in one day and I'm not sure if it would be better to continue south from Tower Falls on to Mt. Washburn and then to Norris, or go west from Tower Falls over to Mammoth, and then Norris. I'm guessing that either way we go, we'll probably hit Mammoth or Norris at mid-morning when it's busy! We're staying at Bridge Bay campground. My other thought was maybe hitting Norris in the evening when it's (hopefully) a little less busy. Thanks so much for all your informative videos and itineraries!
If you're just trying to get to the Norris area without stopping, I'd go south from Tower Falls and then west over to Norris. Have a great time! You are going to love it!
Great info looking to do a snowmobile tour in the winter and this would be the first ever trip to yellowstone any tips on driving thru from Montana to west yellowstone in winter would much appreciate.

Great video with lots of good information, glad i found your video for planning yellowstone. I will be there this year september wit a friend for the last few days of our roadtrip. I am realy excited to go here! I have a small question, are there some kind of guided tours we can use? We will be there with a camper and do not have a normal car.
Hi Jan, there are many guided tours out there, but of course they are quite expensive. I haven’t used any so I can’t recommend any. But I designed my travel guide like a tour - I’ll tell you where to go each day and my audio guide tells you about the park. It’s a huge money saver from buying a tour.

I’m not trying to convince you either way. I enjoy tours, But tours are expensive. So you would save a lot of money with a rental car and my guide. It tells you where to go and in what order. And my audio guide provides three hours of stories about the park, like a tour guide does.
So I’m just giving you the info. You’ll have to make the best choice for you.
Also you can still drive around the park in a camper - no need to rent a car.

I’ve watched a few of your videos on Yellowstone. You have not mentioned Chief Joseph’s Scenic Byway. Just drove out the east entrance into Cody and drove the Chief Joseph’s Scenic Byway back into the north east entrance of Yellowstone. I do have a question. We are coming from New Orleans heading to Mount Olympus for a wedding so we are making it a huge, once in a lifetime trip. We want to come to Yellowstone but we want to see the Tetons too. Since we are coming from south east and going to north west, which entrance and exit would you suggest in order to see the most? We are not in a rush but we also only want to drive no more than 5 or 6 hours a day. (Except for sightseeing along the way.) We want to go to Pikes Peak too. I'm overwhelmed trying to plan all of this. I don't want to miss anything since this will probably be our last big trip. Your suggestions would be very appreciated.
I suggest entering through the South Entrance and exiting through the North Entrance. In our opinion, most of the top ten things to see in the park are on the south and west side of the two loops (minus the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone but you can take a detour to go over to it if you wish). Great video! How are you all planning on handling the National Park Service’s ban on all commercial photography and video? I am curious because occasionally on our main channel as well as our sister channel we find ourselves wanting to film in a national park.

We were going to spend 3 nights at Grizzly Lodge last summer on your recommendation. We were really looking forward to this. When we got there in September after the flood from spring. They had to repair from the washout and that was done. We were NOT impressed with this place. We had a cabin on the creek. We cancelled our reservation and went back to Cody. They were very pleasant with us and didn’t charge a cancellation fee. It may have been because of the flood. I don’t know.

Might be a silly question, but is there a way to access the Beartooth Highway from the north entrance? Going to Yellowstone in a few weeks (staying in Gardiner) and would love to drive some of that highway if the weather is decent!
The closest entrance to the Beartooth Highway is the Northeast Entrance. However, if you're staying in Cody, WY then you'd be about 1h30 min from the Beartooth Highway (if you don't enter Yellowstone).

Is there a trick to getting the vibrant colors around Grand Prismatic spring from the overlook? I've seen some amazing, vibrant color photos and some with very dull, bland, boring colors around the spring. Thanks
The colors mostly depend on the time of year and the temperature. In the summer, when it's hotter, you will get more vibrant colors.

Food.
Camping, we had an RV. Pre prepped dinners for cooking at campsites, usually over campfire or outside grill. Hamburger patties made, seasoned, and frozen. Steaks, seasoned and frozen. Chicken, seasoned and frozen. Etc. Easy on site, prep, cook, and clean up. Meals out and about. Sandwich material in cooler, bread, meat, cheese. Again, easy in car prep, and cleanup. Hiking, took wrapped/baggy snacks (which, for reasons, is a critical medical necessity anyway).
Not camping (which for reasons we are now using hotels, not inside park - wish, maybe if we win a small lottery). See sandwiches above, both in the park and in our hotel if we are late enough. Lesson learned. The only late location open in W. Yellowstone, was the pizza place. Good pizza, not something wanted every night. We got caught in multiple bison jams on NW through Norris and Madison junctions to W. Yellowstone. We usually eat one meal out every other day.
Note, these days just the two of us, empty nest. Even when traveling with child, we only have the one. Different when you have more children or a larger group.

Great informative video! We are planing a Sept 2024 trip. We have a 27' 5" motorhome and don't tow a vehicle. Would we be able to tour around with our MH or would we need to rent a car?
Plenty of people tour around in their MH's.

I like this video but. Why would I land in Bozeman which is an hour and a half away and then go to JAC to the park which is farther away? I'm sure I am missing something 😊
JAC is a small regional airport and is more expensive so most visitors fly into Bozeman, which is larger and cheaper.
What two weeks in the spring is it opened up to more biking?

We are planning on visiting yellowstone and the grand teton parks. We want to stay in one location. Which areas would you suggest staying in?
Canyon is the best area to stay in if you don't want to move locations. It is the most central location for Yellowstone. It is also not unreasonably far from the Tetons.

Could you explain the "no reservations"? That's literally exactly the drawback we've faced when trying to plan....
No reservations to enter the park - many other parks require a reservation or ticket to enter. Not Yellowstone. But you still need reservations for lodging, etc.

What are the odds of us nabbing a cancellation in Old Faithful inn or lodge for September? Hoping to grab a cheaper hotel/cabin room for a night in the park as we won’t have enough luggage space to bring camping gear with us :(
You never know, persistency may pay off.
When I had to do it, I checked online about 4 times per day. Xanterra told me the website will update with a cancellation basically in real time. If there is a cancellation, it will get rebooked pretty quickly so check multiple times per day and be the first to catch it.

@@sylviele3239 That is soooo awesome! I went through a similar thing. This time, I thought I would be nice to my wife, and reserve Geyser Basin View rooms with more room and modern conveniences. Then she told me she really liked the Old House Rooms with private baths that I had booked back in 2021. Of course! These rooms sell out in like 1 hour a year in advance because there are only 10. I had to check about 5 times daily, online, every day. And it took 3 separate reservations to do it. Then I had Xanterra combine them into 1 big reservation. It was stressful but it worked. So much for thinking you know your wife after 22 years of marriage!!! 🤣😂🤣😂

The cost to get into Yellowstone is $35/per vehicle and your ticket is good for 7 days.
And now I want to cancel our trip knowing it will be packed since they were closed last year
I really wouldn’t worry about it. We’ve never felt Yellowstone was too crowded.
