    In the 70s I self taught and finger picked with just my thumb and pointer finger and over the decades and was pretty good. I only knew how to play a few songs and COVID 19 I started online lessons. But, learning the proper way to finger pick as you are showing was tough unlearning the old and learning to use the three fingers and thumb. Now that I am finger picking properly as you are teaching it's unmatched to the old way and in every way. Wish RUclips was around decades ago. All that lost time playing the same ol' songs

    That's a really good lesson. If you grow out those three nails how long do they need to be? I do mechanic work and always seem to break mine so I keep them short.

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  Месяц назад +2

      Hey Ronnie, Thanks by the way! They don't have to be long at all. Just grow them a bit longer or long enough so that the string is able to launch off them if that makes sense. The idea is that the string hits the flesh of your finger first then glides off the nail. It gives a really nice crisp sound! Just go a little longer that normal and see how that works. I should do a video on it, ha. I break mine sometimes too! Best of luck!

    Thank you for this video. Would the fingering of thumb for bass and 1.2.3 for table strings be the same for playing melody lines, scales, etc? Or is that different technique?

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  4 дня назад

      Hey! The thumb, 1, 2, 3 would only really apply to finger style playing in this case. Though you can play melodies and scales and single lines with this fingerstyle technique. Are you playing your scales and melodies with a pick?

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  Месяц назад +1

      Hey! I wouldn’t recommend anchoring your pinky on the guitar. I’ve seen people do it and I’ve done it from time to time but I feel like it locks you down and slows you down too much! For me the pinky isn’t involved and I don’t think about it at all. Just let it stay curled close to the palm or let it go where it wants to goes naturally if that makes sense! Best of luck to you and thanks for watching!!!

    I see you finger the A chord in a “D7” shape. Curious, do you find some advantage to doing it this way?

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  Месяц назад +1

      @@teddyspaw haha good eye!! Ya it’s great for changing chords in the key of “A”. I teach my beginner students to do that. Then the first finger basically becomes an anchor finger or guide finger. You don’t have to lift it when changing to D. And you just slide it back a fret when changing to E. I talk about it a bit in my other videos!

  • @Packethackscom1
    @Packethackscom1 13 дней назад

    This is great video, perfect for someone new to fingerpicking like myself. I have a question about the timing. The first 2 patterns contain 4 notes each, so I assume they are simply played as quarter notes. But the third pattern has 8 notes, so then should it be played as eight notes? Or should it be played as quarter notes over 2 bars?

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  13 дней назад

      @@Packethackscom1 Thanks a lot by the way and great question! It would be played as 8th notes in this case so…. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. It turns out being played faster so it’s a good challenge! You could do the pattern as quarter notes too and stretch it over 2 bars but it would depend on the song and how often the chords change. The same chord would have to hold for 2 bars as you know!

    • @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer
      @TwentyMinuteGuitarPlayer  13 дней назад

      I was just thinking… you could still play the pattern as quarter notes even if the chords change more often. You could break the pattern up with a chord change every bar.

    Buffing your nails stop the sound of nail scraping the wire of the whelmed strings particularly index finger on the third string. Not saying you shouldn’t grow, shape or buff your nails only that the flesh of your fingers doesn’t make that squeaky noise.

      Mmmmmm, I disagree! I have played rythm guitar badly, on and off for over 10 years. I've finally admitted to myself that approaching 70 I'm never gonna set the guitar world on fire, but I'd love to be able to knock out some tunes that my family recognise and don't require me to use my dreadful voice. Just simple camp-fire stuff is fine by me, and I really think finger-style could fit the bill (for me!).
