I really liked this video, thanks! After listening to both the Tascam to me sounds much better! Question for you, I just got the Tascam DR10SG and after plugging the line into my camera there was no sound. Do you have to be recording from the Tascam for it to send sound to camera? At this point I don't have an SD card in and haven't recorded. Was looking to just use it as a live-in shotgun mic. Thanks again and look forward to hearing from you
So happy the video added value to you! And thanks for the question. I had the same thing happen to me, so I don't have a very good answer. What I always do is it have an SD card in the mic. Then it gives sound to the camera. However I have to also make sure the mic is on. So turn off power saver, so it's always on. I haven't researched the mic that much. But now I wanna check it out more, and see what more I find out about the mic! :)
I love my tascam 10sgs! Excellent video... to me I like the sound of tascam and zoom h4n... when you say gain 40... was that on tascam? What was setting to connect zoom h4n?
Yes, precisely. It was 40 gain on the Tascam. I have adjusted that down to 35, and I love that lever going directly into the camera. Now, I recorded this video some time ago, so I don't quite remember the settings on the h4n. But a tule of thumb I follow is to never have settings that go over -6 db. So just monitoring the levels on the h4n so it stays comfortably under -6 db is the best I think. Thanks for the feedback! Really appreciate it. Did I answer your question?
@@PVMMAC I think it really depends on the type of work you're doing. Let's say you're vlogging, then I say, it doesn't make sense. Too heavy, and the mic works very well on its own. But let's say you're recording something a little bit further away, with multiple cameras, then yeah, I can see the benefit of doing that. The h4n has the mics that don't have a preamp in mind, like Ræde NTG3 or Shure SM58. For this mic, I don't find it that necessary, but if you like the sound of it, then I'm all in. But I wouldn't buy an h4n for the sole reason to use it with the Tascam. Was this answer clear? :)
TKO Media thanks for the reply ! I listened to all the scenarios and the zoom h4n and tascam combo sounded real good out of all (I’m not a sound engineer or anything) , just to my ear
Hey , not sure if you know, I just updated the FW on tascam dr-10sg and it now has audio meters on screen. I use Gh4 and m50 and canon doesn’t have audio meter like Gh4/5 so This feature on tascam is helpful :)
Did you order it online? Possible to have a 14 days return policy? Also note that this is the old videomic, and not the videomic pro. My favorite feature about the Tascam is that it can record itself. And it has a power save function.
In my tascam i hear a noise that is louder when the light of tascam display is on (it is always on, but when you press any button it becomes stonger for 5 seconds, and the whistle i hear is louder). Any idea what it could be?
Huh, never noticed that. I don't know for sure, but my impression is that diodes have some kind of high-frequency sound to them. I believe this to be the case for Canon chargers. My best guess is to fix it is in EQ, which you have to do anyway. Or use noise reduction/restoration in adobe audition. Hope you can figure it out. But it is a cheap mic, so it's not perfect.

TKO Media awesome job !! Great video... do You think it makes sense to use tascam 10sg and zoom h4n combo but connected directly to camera ?

I was waiting for you to try a clap while handholding the mic.
Haha, that would be something
Sadly, it was only briefly available for $70. It is now about $200. Fortunately for me, I bought two of them at the lower price a few years ago.
Thanks for the clarification. We're the lucky ones I guess!
Bro it is good tascam dr-10sg with tascam dr05x for micro budget filmmaking audio?
Haven't tried the dr05x, but I'm very impressed with tascam. I just love their mics, so I'm pretty confident it will work. Did you buy it?
I wished I saw this video earlier. I literally just bought the rode video mic pro and spent half my paycheck on it 😭

I got 3 of these tascam 10sg last year $69 off amazon... it’s pretty good Value for price
@@PVMMAC totally! Granted, though old, the rode mic still holds up.
