- Pirelli's Wind Tunnel Tyres look awesome but they cost £700 each...
So I decided to make my own using go kart tyres, 3D printing and spray paint, all to fit within a £150 budget!

Lewis: "Shit man all you had to do was ask"
The most long awaited and most anticipated piece of F1 content known to man is finally here!

Love love love this! However £93 for that 3D print is day light robbery! If you ever need 3D prints in the future, I’ll happily help out as a thank you for making great content!
Was about to say the same thing! You can get a quite decent printer for like 3x that.
And the plastic used is like 3£ at most.
Also rather confused as to why he would get it in ABS? PLA seems a lot more appropriate for the job, considering it isn't structural.
@@jensaugust743 ABS is more rigid and less prone to warping.
@@michaeldahlinger8815 If you set up your heatbead properly and have the proper distance of the nozzle to the heatbed you wont get any warping on PLA. I have never had ANY warping on my Ender 3 with PLA.
@@heavyweight6440 I don't mean just with printing, in general PLA can melt and warp after being left outside in the heat and whatnot. I personally print with just PLA and PETG and have never printed with ABS as I don't have an enclosure and just wouldn't want to have to deal with the smell. That being said thanks for the response, I dont really have an warping issues either when printing as I use a BL touch for leveling and as long as I keep my glass build plate either clean or with an adhesive, it does its job. That's just my knowledge on ABS from what I've gathered from being in the 3D printing community for a few years.
pay 20 pounds more and you got yourself an ender 3, plus another 20 for filament
This is just too cool! I would've sanded down the Dunlop markings off the tyre but otherwise it's immaculate
Great video! Here are a just a few notes that could've made the result slightly better;
* You could get the red more vibrant is by using a white or red primer (primer greatly affects the color of the top coat).
* Vinyl is also quite hard to get clean, I would try water transfer decals (you can get sheets that you can print your own designs on, any unprinted area just becomes transparent). If it comes out bad it's easy to remove (just water and some scrubbing)
* Normal primer works fine for 3D prints, but filler primer is better. It fills in the gaps way more and is great of 3D prints. You could also use something like Milliput to hide the banding.
I think if u use Waterslide decals on non smooth surface it will look very bad, it might be better to stay with vinyl i guess. but i agree with you, on smooth surface it would be better
Why don’t you just ask Lewis Hamilton to give you one of his trophy😂 cause he had a lot of them
He doesn’t own them. his car owns 80% of each.
Cool project! A note for the future, the banding on the 3D print is because of the .stl file export quality, adjusting the options and exporting at a higher quality will make it super smooth. Hope this helps on future projects, keep up the good work.
Thanks!!
@@mattamys No problem 👍🏽
Dunlop looking at this video in anger lol
7:08 that's why should always remove the masking tape right after you are finished spraying, when its still wet. that way it doesn't dry to the tape and leave uneven edges when removed.
F1 fan and model maker.
In a bit I'll have my own wheel too
Wicked video Matt!
Got me excited at the start that you were coming out with some merch!
If matt doesn’t change his channel name to deez nuts to respect mr Steve Alvarez Brown, I will be very disappointed
Oh,Steve is here too.Just noticed.
This is crazy amazing!!!
Man, this looks amazing
Great work!
That looks good Matt!
Who needs to get pole when you can just get this? Incredible job Matt!
To get the red more vibrant, I would have used a light grey or white primer. But before that, I'd have tried to cut those rubber prints off the sidewalls with some sort of planer...
this is such a good idea wow. I might get a wheel printed out at my university! good thing I have some experience with modelling already because that means I might actually be able to replicate it :)
This is really nice. you can actually get this lot cheaper, if you get the go cart tire from a local go carting track for free and if you have a 3d printer you can print the rim by yourself.
That's some beautiful art mate.
Bloody brilliant!
Woah!!! Love it!!! Totally want one!!! 😍
Fair play, the amount of effort that went into this. Nice job.
Surprising that I've never heard of you before. You just got a new subscriber! This was such a good idea.
We definitely need more of this. Awesome job and great camera shots too ofc🔥
Wait bro you the guy in FRL...
@@lewis.n2313 not anymore luckily why?
Nice idea! What a great work dude
OMG A mini Pirelli tyre!! SO CUTE!!!!!
Nice job! Smart thinking with the expanding foam to keep the tyre shape. That 3D print is expensive though, I hadn't realised how much it costs to get single parts made
Thanks! Yeah it’s pricy but it’s also thick, largish and using a decent plastic filament :)
@@mattamys Get a 3D printer. I recommend the Ender 3.
Nice video! Keep up the great content! I read you post on Instagram about it taking 3 weeks to make this video. Awesome stuff. 😎
the centre cap off the original wheel is from the Vw golf gti Pirelli edition, if you wanted to add that touch, you can still buy them from the dealer.
and we are backk, lets go matt!
YASS. I love it!
This looks sick!
For the painting, use a white spray paint to create a base, that will make the red far brighter. Other than that, this is freaking amazing!
amazing work !!! i’d would buy that from you
This so cool!!
amazing work
I use a mark forged and form labs printer the form labs one has lots of material resins and goes to about 100 microms so it is very smooth
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You are a real one!
why is no one talking about how third dude looks like george russel
Incredible
Great job!
Great Content!!Keep it up 🔥 🔥
This looks so cool. I made one myself using this tutorial. Turned out super great 😁 Thanks
Would love to see the final result, show me on Twitter!
@@mattamys Tagged you in my post on twitter :)
Was waiting for a new vid. Great as always.
Just wondering can you make a video on the newest f1 and f2 intros
bruh it looks so nice.
F1 be like: No, this isn't how your supposed to play the game.
Suggestion for a remake of this : make a 2 part rim so that it actually goes over the tire bead and is glued together in the center. It's ok for somebody with no fabrication skills, but a few key improvements would make this much better :).
hi. what do you think about new f1 graphics? do you prefer the small logo or the color of the team?
That was awesome
I love your DIY videos.. Its awesome. :D
solid job damn
Wow that's a great idea! I wonder if it's at all possible to sand down the relief print off the original tyre sidewalls?
Y it would look way more cleaner
I also made one with a tyre 7.1 inches wide. I also found the original 3D model you modified and printed the wheel nut separately.
Great vid mate
Wow Nice vid!
You could even try melt and scrape some of the original text off the tire to make it look cleaner :)
bit hard and dangerous to burn it, probaly should just scratch and then sandpaper
This is great!
So clever!
Super nice idea, especially with the go cart tyre! i might make one myself as i own a 3d printer myself what makes that build muuuch cheaper. ;)
Little comment on the acetone smoothing thing: that only works with abs or asa materials, others like pla and petg wont smooth out :) in my opinion the small problem with your printed part was the 3d file being exported in a low resolution causing these steps on the circular sections in and outside the rim.
GENIUS
Thanks mate
What did program did you use to resize the Pirelli logo?
love it
Maybe not perfect but it´s a very clean result anyway. Great job!
Mega job
Awesome
I think another thing to make it better is to smooth out the writing on the go kart wheel..... Anyhow great job mate... Loving it
if you wanted a more vivid red color, after the primer, use white spray paint then the red
Came here from Tommo’s shout out! Great vid, just subscribed
Get in there tyres!
A really really cool design, mabey you could've sanded the wand of the tyre to remove the little things there, but its very nice anyway!
Yes
I just made 1 with a used front gokart tyre😁 the rim is still inside which i painted black to replicate the 2022 tyres
I used the stencil you provided which worked like a charm
And i used a few parts from the gokart's suspension to have the lock nut on the wheel aswell and it also function's as a stand 😁
Amazing! Would love to see what it looks like, tweet it to me!
@@mattamys i will do that :)
4:55 FYI you want to use filler primer to do this, and not just regular paint primer. Filler primer will fill gaps with the putty, and not paint.
Do u think u can do the wet tyres
Very cool video and makes me want to do it ! I just want to ask which specific tyre did you use ?
I was called the Dunlop LS2 Cadet Rear Slick Tyre!
@@mattamys thank you very much !
FINNALY
I wish I could like this video more than once
Could you tell me the weight of the rim please?
Try to sand down to original tire markings for the next one. Also, a good 3D printer ender 3-v2 costs around £190,-. So maybe it's worth just to buy a 3D printer and some filament.
Nice!
What was the size of the tyre you used from Dunlop?
This guy honestly deserves a pole position award
You could get a better, rounder print with less faceting with different software. STLs when saved need to be told a tolerance. The default tolerances are crap for 3D printing, I lost a batch of resin prints to that.
I’d love one of these sighed 👀
Make a homemade f1 Series, could be Really cool!!
The 3d print I'm guessing was faceted because the lower poly mesh (with control loops or creases) was printed rather than the smoothed mesh. You can create the smoothed mesh in most any modelling package with a click (blender/Maya/ZBrush) and then export a much smoother STL for printing. The banding on 3d printers is measured in fractions of a millimetre!
Can you make this a kinda series but try to recreate drivers helmets
Make the wheel two-part so it snaps or threads together. Only other thing would be ensuring the rim fits the tire more precisely. There's no way that would hold air. Otherwise, quite the exceptional job!!
I need that, now,
hola me gustó mucho el video
Very nice Job ! Beautiful Work but for next time you can get you'r own 3d printed for absolut 150 😅
I'm trying to make one, but there is an issue: the tyre shape is not good, it needs to be inflated to have the good shape... is the polyurethane strong enough to inflate it???
BROOO AT K1 SPEED THEY WERE GIVING AWAY GOKART TIRES LES GOOOOOO
Can you make a video on your 1:1 Vandoorne helmet? Is it an oficial replica? Or just a cheaper Bell helmet with the paint job?
Mentioned about the helmet in another video, but basically it was a present given to me after I left Formula E - it’s an official replica from when he first joined the championship 😁
@@mattamys That’s amazing! Thanx for the reply!
Wow
