  • Meet JESS!!! Jess is a handsome tri-colored border collie mix. He was thought to be eight months old when he and his sister were found as strays in Modesto on August 18, 2023. There is no information from the shelter on his life prior to being found as a stray. He weighs approximately 46 pounds. He was neutered on September 7, 2023. He is healing nicely.
JESS has unique facial markings, expressive, big, brown eyes, soft ears, and a happy, friendly demeanor. I have not heard him bark, but he does vocalize when he is excited or trying to express his needs (like when he knows he is going for a walk).
JESS could easily be renamed. He responds to being called, but not specifically to “JESS.” He is so handsome and full of character, so maybe you have a better name for him.
JESS is a typical, young herding dog in that he needs exercise, activity, and stimulation. He is good at entertaining himself. You can see how entertaining he is in the videos, playing with his toys and enjoying his bone. He also loves to engage with his humans. If his foster mom is not in the same room, he will go looking for her. Jess loves to go for walks in the neighborhood. During his walks, he is on the look-out for anything that moves, i.e., squirrels, rats, cats, lizards, bunnies. He sees them all and wants to chase. I would recommend a home without cats or other small pets. He has played very well with other dogs at the dog park and does not show any signs of aggression. He walks pretty well on a leash, is not over the top with pulling, and will follow with a little tug on the leash and a “Let’s go.” He loves walks! On walks, he is not bothered by other dogs or cars. He avoids large trucks that make noise, as the noise seems to make him a little nervous. He has not been reactive to bicycles, skateboarders, or motorcycles.
JESS initially didn’t want to go into his crate, but after giving him treats in his crate, that is improved. There are now times when he will go into his crate on his own, without treats, for naps. Jess sleeps quietly through the night, and at times he sleeps outside of his crate. Jess is not fond of car rides and does not voluntarily go into the crate in the car. He is nervous and salivates during the ride. There are training protocols to desensitize dogs that are nervous about riding in cars, and Jess would probably benefit from such protocols; we can share that information with his adopter.
JESS potties well outside. He does not have free roam of the house when he is alone. He is brought outside to potty routinely and will also sit by the backdoor if he has to potty. He has pretty good manners, does not feel the need to greet every person or dog. If approached by someone, he is usually calm and inviting. He is just a puppy, so he still has some puppy behaviors (like may want to jump on you). Overall he is a very good boy. He is pretty gentle with children. He knows “sit.” He responds well to “good boy.”
JESS would likely do equally as well as an only dog or as one of a dog pair.
JESS is micro-chipped, neutered, heart worm negative and on preventative, and up to date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application and wish to inquire about JESS, please email us at Adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.
JESS is being fostered in Sacramento in Sacramento County, CA.
