Very inspirational videos. Love to view your travels to my native country of Iceland. As I child and young man I dreamt about doing this kind of flying, but aircraft design and development got the better of me. Anyway, your videos bring back those memories. Thank you for sharing this experience.
@@richardtyrerHi Richard, being proudly Irish myself, I can feel the same way when non-Irish people pronounce Irish place names in my native Irish Gaelic language, even though I can’t actually speak Irish Gaelic very well, I still try my best when I come home from the U.K., although I love to educate respected visitors to our country, as our honoured guests, which is also why I feel the need to protect them from getting ripped off in the tourist traps and to entice them to explore those parts of Ireland that are off the beaten track, to enable them to see our Irish culture at its finest - I think also that for me, coming home to Ireland is a hugely spiritual experience that I can’t quite explain, despite living 21 years in Manchester, as I feel that even at age 52, Ireland will always be my real home and I feel fortunate that I still have extended family still living near Dublin 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️
Hi Richard, Gday from Australia! I started my MECIR in the DA42 on the 4th of Jan and passed my flight test in almost 40 degree heat on the 20th here in Perth! Your videos inspired me to keep pushing through 16 days of early mornings and late night study sessions. Please keep up the awesome content!
Brilliant VLOG Richard.. I’m glad you asked the ATC to say again because I was sat here thinking “is he eating the mic lol” we have a ATC at StAthan who has his so far away you end up turning up the volume knob only to be deafened when he moves it closer
Hey Richard, been enjoying your content a great deal, particularly through my MEIR on the 42 recently! Your channel also caught my eye as a fellow rotary pilot. In fact I think we may have been flying for the same company not so long ago! Keep the videos coming... production quality is fantastic!
Love these small community airfields. The first controller was completely asleep at first, had no idea what was happening. The second controller was excited that someone actually wanted to land and use services!
Westman islands usually are only domestic flights (ppl from other countries usually go by ship or as a passenger) he's used to speaking Icelandic on the freq, speaking English increased his workload so he was a little slower but nothing dangerous. the other airport has daily domestic flights and GA airplanes landing there so his English is a lot better. despite what you think the westman islands controller was not completely asleep and wasn't clueless about what was going on. I can see how you thought so tho if I didn't know he wasn't used to English I would've thought so aswell.
Wishing you the very best of luck with your PPL - Pilot Oli here on RUclips has a really good channel as does Plane Old Ben, both based here in the U.K. - at age 52 now, I’m too old and too poor to start pilot training but I’ve kept up an interest in aviation over the years, also following Citation Max, Flight Chops and Steveo Kinevo among others in the US - of course, being proudly Irish, I also follow my national airline Aer Lingus
Another great video, excellent quality and explanation. I was more lucky with the weather a couple of years ago coming in with a DA-40. I guess you’re heading the same way I flew, Wick?? 5.5 hrs in the single:) Looking forward to the rest of your adventure.
Great! was waiting for another trip report been a while, hope to see more trips from you to new locations soon. keep up the great work Rich! all the best from Birmingham uk.
@@richardtyrer Always look forward to your videos, I would watch steveo1kinevo, citationmax1 and premier1driver, and you guys are all excellent, but it's nice to follow someone from the UK.. Look forward to your next flight
@@richardtyrer It's very cool to watch your familiarity in the planes you fly where you do the flows very efficient, without using checklists. I am trying to incorporate the use of flows myself, but can't decide whether generic flows (that is done the same each time, in each phase of flight) is the way to go for a GA-pilot like me that doesn't fly all that often. Generic could be Top to bottom, left to right or something. What is your thoughts and how do you use flows for efficient cockpit operation? :-)
Hi! It's a GoPro Max. Great camera, easy to use, a little fiddly to edit! I would recommend one though (you need a good computer to edit properly!). 😁👍
@@richardtyrer Thanks Richard!! Thankfully I have like the most powerful PC money can buy lol. Cheers!! I'll be ordering one of those very shortly!! :)
Your videos are always so relaxing to watch olus the production value is always great. Can I ask how much maintenance is required in between these short hops around Iceland? Thanks for sharing your passion.
So nice your videos, mate. But I think you could put subtitles for better understanding the dialogues. Anyway, thanks for sharing your passion with us. ❤
Hi Richard, happy to see a new video from you. Great job as usual! I got a hold of a G1000 sim for the PC and as you said once you understand the logic of it, it's quite a capable system. I actually used the sim to copy your ILS into BIEG. One question, I noticed that you selected 5,300' on the altitude selector sometime during the approach (presumably the missed approach altitude). I didn't catch it exactly from the video, but what is the best time during the approach to dial in the missed approach altitude? Is it right after the GS captures? Thanks and safe journeys, Ibrahim.
Next time you are in you must try Ísafjörður Airport (BIIS). A beautiful u-turn landing inside a förd. There is a video of a DA42 doing the landing on youtube.
Richard, when you were flying in Iceland, did you fly anywhere near that Icelandic volcano that erupted a few years ago, causing all that flight disruption all over Europe? And did the NOTAM’s mention anything about the status of that volcano now?
Richard how come you didn’t route via the ES NDB which looked like the start of the procedure to avoid the high ground? Difficult to study the plate on your video but I didn’t see a DCT EGILL option. Although as you said the worst of the terrain was to the East.
Ah, it was quite busy before turning the camera's on (and I wanted to focus on the flying after!) but there is an arrival which takes you direct from BRUSI to EGILL which allows you to skip the traditional procedure. I didn't have time to really go through it on camera. If you search for the Iceland AIP and look at the procedures for BIEG, you'll find it under the VAD 1 RNAV arrival. Cheers 😁👍
I get the impression that the guy at Vestmannaeyjar was just an A/G radio operator with no idea about your FPL nor had any interaction with Reykjavik ATC.
Hello Richard, I have a question regarding parking. I've been curious as to what happens one you land, you find a parking spot pay and then leave? or is it free secure parking? Thanks in advance, wonderful flying sir!
I've been trying to find a good spot for my GoPro MAX in the DA40NG.... can you share a photo of how you have it mounted and the mount to get that view with no mount artifact?
Hello, why are the papi lights always indicates "low" on you approaches? is this because the descending slope of your plane differs from a regular one ? thanks for the video
as a pilot that has not yet finished IFR rating, were you really legal to enter IMC conditions before you received official route clearance from reykjavik control, and if you are interested i have quite a library of icelandic flying content on my channel
I was, it was outside the Class E airspace when I was IMC but that is why I asked to change frequency for higher early on. Thanks for that, I will check it out! Happy Landings! 😁👍
@@richardtyrer thanks for the reply, just to clarify, there was no intention at all to call you out or anything, just for curiosity, even i dont understand the IFR system here, as i did my IFR training just shy of a skill test elsewhere, but the damn CAA exams had to run out of time just before i could finish, even did my multi training in the same trip on the 42
Ah no worries I didn’t take it in that way at all! To be fair there was probably a better way of doing the IFR departure but given the information I had at the time I saw that being the only way! The majority of airspace in Iceland seems to be class E, so no permissions required for VFR but IFR clearence is mandatory. Shame your exams have run out, I love VFR flying but if you want to go on long trips, you really need the IR to guarantee the flight! Best of luck with the training

Great video as always Richard. Like the way you woke the Air traffic controller up from his morning nap mate
Being an icelander, it's always nice to hear how other nations pronounce icelandic places
Haha I knew my pronunciation was bad on this trip! Even though I had the locals slowly say the words to me I still couldn't get the hang of it! 😂

Thanks for another great video - really enjoy these! Interesting challenges in terms of accents
Very entertaining. Love the fact there are no specific clearances for take-off and landings.
Thanks! I found it really interesting, they were both AFIS so usually it's a Takeoff/Land at your discretion, but seemed to vary a little here! 😁👍

Too bad you were in the clouds for so much of the flight, because the landscape on final was amazing.
Did you understood anything from the controller? 😂😂😂 Greetings from Portugal.
