best thing about the house is that they prioritised having a pool yet didn't have access to the pool...... no door to the pool and the pool is closed off with a fence ( for privacy) 🤣

I was the oldest of 3 kids and 2 addicted parents. Crack, pills, alcohol, weed, and tbh probably more at points. They got clean when I was a sophomore in high school and started living freely from addiction (less cravings, less grumpy, no more sickness, and emotional healing) about a year later. But by then, I had already been parentified.
Parentification is when a child takes on the role of a parent to their parents or siblings. I was a pseudo parent to my sibling and often spoken to like an equal parent by my parents. I was the tooth fairy. I was the elf on the shelf. I made breakfast and read the bedtime stories. I cleaned up the pukey kids. My mom even asked me for marriage advice as a 12 year old. Yes my parents also did a lot. But too much was put on me too young. It led to severe depression and anxiety. Only made worse when they stepped up as parents after getting clean. I was terrified they’d relapse and it’d crush my siblings. And I felt pushed aside. If I wasn’t mom, who was I?
With the help of therapy, meds, and my partner, I’m healing. But my relationship with my siblings has been strained since they got clean 8 years ago. I don’t know how to be a sister, and they don’t need me as a mom anymore.
It’s not the worst thing that addiction could lead to. We were fed. We were physically safe. We had a home that always had heat and water. We had love. Kids at my parents AA/NA meetings had definitely been through more. But that doesn’t negate the fact that I hurt too.
And I feel guilty, because I miss being mom. I miss their addiction, because I knew my place. I don’t know where I fit in my family anymore, and I’m scared I’ll never have a home there. I miss my sister sharing everything with me and coming to me when she had nightmares. I miss being useful. My partner feels like home, but I still mourn the traumatic but comforting times when I would close the door to my youngest sibling’s room and keep her distracted while my parents drank and partied.
Point being, 1. Parentification sucks. Don’t do that to your kids 2. Therapy is cool

I'm currently going through parentification, my mother is trying to take on the role of being mother to me and my sister again because she's gotten clean, but I'm 18 now and I've had parentification since I was at least 12, and basically raised my sister, now that my mother is trying to step in, it freaks me out, also, I live with my grandmother because we got taken from my mother when I was 14, and my grandmother does this thing where she makes me feel bad for needing things, she doesn't mean to I don't think, it's my own head thinking this because I'm so used to not bothering others with what I need because I have gotten it for myself for such a long time

I feel you, and I'm glad you've gotten therapy for it.
Even though its not nearly as bad, I went through a similar thing, just at my father's, and he didn't do any substances to my knowledge aside from of course occasional alcohol. I am the oldest out of my brother and I, and we are three years apart. I was 6 when my parents separated. My brother was three, and he got in trouble at my father's a lot, which resulted in a lot of spankings. I took on the role of a parent to my brother, so that he wouldn't get spanked and screamed and yelled at, which still resulted just less often, and I wound up taking the brunt of the yelling and screaming, (till my father figured out I was trying to take care and protect my brother, which at six years old and onward, it felt like there wasn't much I could do, and he made me think that as well). I'd keep my brother occupied, and get us both snacks when we were there. My father's girlfriends took care of us and I was allowed to play GTA 4 at six/seven/eight years old.
Our mother wasn't aware of much of any of this (although she suspected it) until we hit our teenage years (I'm now eighteen, stopped going to my dads at 16 prior to both me and my brother being kicked out for telling the truth), and after therapy, I eventually told her what happened. Our mother always took great care of us, where our father didn't want anything to do with us and had us on the weekends he WORKED. Our mother would get on the floor and play with us, and put us first quite a while before herself. Before she left the house after bad verbal and emotional fights, (involving gaslighting, yelling, screaming, narcissism, everything but physical to my knowledge), she called our grandmother, her mother, and explained that she was coming over to her house to get away from our father. I don't know if he was making threats or not against her life, but she was very scared, and it was 10 or eleven on a school night-ish. We didn't go to school the next day I believe.
When she did leave, she grabbed a change of clothes for us, and us kids ourselves. Eventually, she called my father to let him know we were gonna get the rest of the stuff, and he said he wouldn't let her or give her enough time. She called the cops, and they told him that he legally had to let her come in and get our stuff and move out properly, and give her more than 24-48 hours (as that is what he told her he was going to give her or he wouldn't allow it. The cops said at least two weeks to a month. My mother, and my grandmother went during the day while my father was at work, and got everything she needed out of the house, and to our grandmother's house. After court and everything settled, we lived on child support for a while.
I wasn't the tooth fairy or the elf on the shelf, but I wasn't stupid, at nine or ten years old I had it figured out, thanks to my dad having his hand under my pillow and both parents having different hand writing and techniques for santa. They would never talk about arranging Christmas gifts either so there weren't duplicates. Duplicates happened a lot through the years.
There was once where we had gone to my father's parent's house for dinner with me and my brother at 6 and 3, and for whatever reason, my father let him have 3 or 4 servings of shepard's pie, (He still loves it to this day, lol), which about a half hour later, on the drive to drop him and I off at our mother's, my brother threw up in the backseat, setting off my dad. He was yelling and screaming at him while he was on the side of the road trying to clean out his truck, and he basically handed my brother to my mom and said "You clean him".
To this day, I still am going through therapy on my own, and am trying my hardest to not parent my bother who is now 15. He still goes to our father's, as he's being forced to. Our step-mother has already hinted or threatened my mom that we don't want a repeat of him getting kicked out again, as it was with me and him about a year or two ago. I'm still not allowed to get my stuff back from there. Overall, I have gotten better and have grown to accept the fact that I may never get my stuff back, and that doesn't matter anymore.
My mom is now happily married to the person I now consider to be my dad. He actually makes an effort to play with us kids (he has two of his own) and I consider them my siblings too even though they're technically step. He made my father jealous with the way he treated us nicely, and my father didn't want to hear from him at all. He'd get angry at any mention of our step-dad's name.
I apologize for the rocky, lengthy, and not organized response, and I hope it was okay to read. I am sharing my story as what I was told and what I experienced throughout the years. I am much better now myself.

While a LOT of pageants, pageant coaches, and pageant parents are gross and exploitative (cough Toddlers and Tiaras) there are some that genuinely are not!
The show "Kim of Queens" (you can watch it free on RUclips) is actually a great show with a great coach that doesn't exploit or sexualize the kids at all (and none of them are toddlers, which helps). She doesn't do "full glitz" (big hair and gaudy makeup) pageants, especially for the kids, she doesn't make the performances or outfits sexually charged (and actively speaks against it), she works on the girls' confidence and talent, she doesn't only care about winning no matter what, and she makes sure that the girls are doing it because _they_ want to do it.
If "Toddlers and Tiaras" shows the exploitative side of the child pageant industry, "Kim of Queens" shows the helpful and wholesome side. Plus, it's a fun show overall, lmao

a couple comments are sharing their stories similar to the families so why not add a Polly Perspective.
my sister was mom. she basically had me forced into her care at 14. she hated my guts until our parents left me as a toddler home completely alone one too many times.
there were days I was just. kinda home by myself for 10+ hours because our parents would go to the bar and my sister would have work after school. I became about as self sufficient as a toddler could be. I would feed myself stuff like chips and whatever snack crap was on the counter because "mommy might get me something when she gets home".
it was usually my sister bringing home leftover popcorn from the movie threatre she worked at.
we had that for dinner more often than home cooked food. our mother was too busy drinking and having affairs to provide for us, and our father was too busy doing all of the drugs, drinking and having affairs to come home.
I don't remember if he came home high on the heavier stuff, I hope he didn't. definitely came home drunk and greened out more than he ever did sober.
there were times they'd bring people home from the bar. my sister always kept a metal bat by her bed those nights. and she'd make me sleep in her room.
my parents eventually lost the house and we moved in with fathers mother. she was worse. she'd just straight up not let me and Nina eat, use the only functional shower, she even tried to restrict us from getting water because she hated our mother. thankfully our maternal grandparents and aunt lived down the road.
me and Nina would sneak out and bathe at her house, grandma would feed us and let us sleep there when we needed to. aunt Karrie did my laundry when Sally wouldn't let us. basically I was raised by a village.
our real parents still wonder why we never call. why we never reach out.

This family seems like the type that if they met the family from the one where the child’s income was how they survived, they’d end up putting their child to work and the one with the child earning income would put their toddler to work. Both families would be looking at some big house in a nicer neighborhood to buy. They’d tell others they’re looking at the house so their kids can go to the better school, but really it’s because they want a bigger house. Both sets of parents would also likely lie about the fact that they’re unemployed and mooching off their kids. Once they had the bigger house, they’d probably also have roommates who pay rent to live there so now the kids are around strangers. I mean, I have certainly met folks like this so I’m not just coming up with this off the top of my head. And there’s a good chance that when the toddler becomes a kid and the kid becomes a teen they’ll still be working and the parent/parents will have another baby so that when it’s a toddler they’ll have it earn money, too. It’s when the teen becomes a young adult that the trouble will occur as the young adult will move out and 1) either have no connection to the family ever again or 2) have a connection with the family long enough to try to get custody of their siblings from their parents or 3) continue to be in relation with the parents but the parents either actively try to run off any potential partners for their young adult or they keep pressuring them to have children (married or not) and then use the grandkids the same way.
Neat video! I didn’t realize pageants paid so well either! Here I thought it was just about parents having something to brag about their kids!

Oh my gosh, I did the same challenge after watching your video. Even downloaded basemental. It worked out the same way I think, mom just eventually stopped drinking alcohol all on her own, not the nicotine though. Once she hit high school I had her meet all the attractive boys because she wanted to build a better family, gave her the big family aspiration. She ended up with Taku Akiyama I think, so once her brother aged up I had him woo Taku's little sister, even though she was older than him. Not by a lot though. Anyway, she's got a toddler of her own while her brother doesn't have any kids yet. Hoping that'll change but I'm leaving it up to the game.
Heh, I forgot her name but the girl child mostly made money by dumpster diving. It wasn't a whole lot usually but kept the family afloat.

Ahhh the Smirnofs , that dumb family down the road, that spent 10k having a beautifully walled in back yard and a luxury swimming pool built that they will never use because 'They have NO back door ' 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was thinking today, could you make money through blackmail, you can bug people and listen in to their conversations and then you can blackmail them and earn some money, I don't know how much money you can earn and I don't know if you can earn more money depending on what you hear or maybe if they're worth more can you earn more from blackmailing them? , also if they're a celebrity you can get autographs, get them evaluated and earn a pretty penny that way. I have the inability to play bad sims so I love living vicariously through your videos 🤣🤣
