Alan Wilder on the recording of One Caress:
Once we decided we wanted "real" strings, there was only really one or two choices as to who should arrange them. Will Malone arranged the strings for Massive Attack's 'Unfinished Sympathy', a particular favourite of both myself and Martin Gore. The strings were recorded at Olympic Studios in London, using a 28 piece sting section, to which Martin sang the vocal "live" - thus equalling the fastest ever recording of any one Depeche Mode track, the other being Somebody.[1]

This is Martin's best performance. Dave is rightly the lead singer because he has the energy for it both vocally and physically in his performance.
This a mega masterpiece...just when you think Martin couldnt get any better at songwriting🤯...I remember hearing it for the first time I was in tears ...from the euphoric feelling I got ...and then this song went into the next one and omg ....

Hearing this live in a charity event in 2010 with an orchestra is one of the most sublime moments in Depeche Mode history.

"Home" and "One Caress" are my favorite Martin tracks. I'd have to write an essay to even try to dive into how "Home" hits me, every time even after 25 years.
Same but he only the music video not like live single version of home where he killed it.
Home is a beautiful song, the way Martin's vocals swing up and down is astounding.
To me this is martin gore's best performance by far. The feelings that this song evokes is barrilliant.
Martin is a true Genius. This song is so special to me. A great memory of first love. In the summer of 93 I was 15 and worked as a camp counselor. I remember falling head over heels for this other fellow camp counselor. While getting to know her I asked if she'd ever heard of DM, she hadn't. I immediately proceeded to play this for her on my sony walkman(lol). It was a wrap right after that!!! God, what an awesome summer we had together and such a sweet memory for me to cherish. Thank you Martin!
Summer of '93 was very special for me as well. Fell in love. I'm happy now, but secretly, my mind still goes back to those days at least once a week.

Martin Gore told Swedish magazine "POP" in 1993 (translated from Swedish):
"The best thing about it was that it was so spontaneous. [The string quartet] came in and played and I sang with them live. We recorded the song in three hours, usually every song takes about a month. I don’t share the belief that synthesizers and samplers aren’t real instruments, but there’s something special with musicians, real string players. They’ve studied many years to play their instruments. I felt within me that my music was suddenly taken more seriously. I know I shouldn’t feel that way. But however stupid it might sound, suddenly hearing ”real” musicians who have studied music for years performing your song makes it, in a way, come off as more serious. It’s just a feeling, and a false one. But it’s there."
You´re speachless. Yes! Believe me, there is still a lot more to discover. In this decade (1993) and later. I look forward to your next post.

Yes, Martin is a god and an angel. I wouldn't say I could compare his voice and Dave's... Dave's voice is more suitable for some songs and Martin's for others... but when Martin sings live, do not speak to me... I need to be fully immersed 😍

My favorite moments in this are when you perform the "one caress" bear hug while Martin sings the same lyric. (4:29) (5:14) Such strong arms, man. I know you've said you lift and it shows.
"It's got everything I love about Depeche Mode in this. It's dark. It's emotional. It's powerful. And it's got Martin singing it." (6:10) I'm always intrigued by your appreciation for the darkness in their music and lyrics.

As much as I like Dave as a singer, I have always had a preference for Martin’s voice.
Even his backing vocals enhance their songs hugely. A God indeed. ❤️

Old person perspective on this whole album, and this track in particular: A lot of us didn't take kindly to SFAD initially. It just wasn't what a lot of us expected from DM following Violator. I didn't spend a lot of time with the album for years, until the sometime in 1999 when I realized that I hadn't listened to it in its entirety in at least 3 years. I had been putting "One Caress" on burned CDs for "best of albums" for car trips, but nothing else from the album. Kind of like really enjoying "Straight To Hell" from the Clash's "Combat Rock" but nothing else. I sat down to read a book and decided to throw SAFD in, expecting to not pay much attention to it, and it was like hearing it fresh and far removed from Violator and Music for the Masses. I ended up barely reading a sentence that day but I let the album play through 3 or 4 times. To this day, I am amazed at the glory that is this album, and sad that I dismissed it for 6+ years. "One Caress" is still a track that makes me stop what I'm doing, crank the volume, and then just let it flow through me.

Technically Martin has a better voice than Dave - it’s operatic - he can go the distance … but comparisons are odious - plus Dave is a baritone. And he’s the frontman - he’s the main event when he’s on stage. But let’s face it - Martin Gore he’s the true meat and potatoes of Depeche Mode and always has been. He writes the songs. He writes the songs.
The composition of this song is amazing ... for me, it could stand with the output of any 19th century romantic classical composer (Mahler anyone?) ... reminder to self ... time to throw out that S Club 7 collection ...😊
Most vocal coaches would probably say that Martin has the better quality voice, in esthetics and range. One Caress was meant for Martin to sing accompanied by the orchestra. Such a beautifully haunting song.
So Happy to watch the way you react to this one...in my all time MLG top 5 tracks along with A Question of Lust, Somebody, Home (you will be blown away) and the most recent Soul With Me...
And now i have to say... I Told you So weeks ago, now you are understanding why almost every DM fan call themselves as "Devotees"... this album, man... And you are just down to 1 track (and 2 wonderful B-Sides)... next comes Higher Love, then My Joy and last but not least Death's Door... and then Devotional (you will have a blast just to watch and hear how much the band evolved since their first live performances to the very pinnacle)
Anndddd thinking it again, this is why Get Right With Me it's so low in almost everyone's lists... it's sorounded by 9 masterpieces (ups, spoiler alert about Higher Love, it's a Masterpiece too, at least in my book) it has to have a meritory mention at least.

i honestly knew nothing, I didnt even know that they existed before i heard blasphemous rumours. And that was only from a request from a comment here on RUclips
And haha my family absolutely hated me growing up because i would talk all the way through movies and songs commenting on every little thing that happens. I got the nickname "Chatterbox" very very early on in life haha
No synth for this song but a 28 strings musicians section ! This track wasn’t supposed to be on the LP but a b-side only and with the result they decided to include it on SOFAD and it has been recorded in only 3 ou 4 hours that’s all !

Regarding the voices. Dave has a baritone while Martin has a tenor voice and that's why they go well together.

I love how excited you get for Martin songs. 🥰 He is definitely a better singer than Dave, and I don’t just say that because he’s my favorite. He has more range and more technical ability. But I still love Dave- he is very talented too.
I've always decribed DM's music as like a movie soundtrack... this is no different. Sits back in chair, tips head back lights cigarette, totally spent.... and i don't' even smoke. Gore-gasm !!!

Interesting what you said about who's the better singer. I think it's more they have such different tambres, literally comparing a baritone to a tenor. They're just different. I don't think Martin could front an entire album or concert as well as Dave's whose voice has real gravitas. Martin's is better used as that little sprinkling for extra flavor, a little bit of spark here and there. Your reaction to this song is correct, it's tremendous. This is the first DM song with none of the members playing an instrument: it's all natural strings. Alan said in an interview, most songs would take weeks and weeks, and this one they got done in 30 minutes! If you listen close at the beginning, they say you can hear pages rustling.
its very hard to choose a better singer of the both. They both definitely have their merits!
Personally I think this and Home are Martins two best songs, most love ? of Lust but i am meh on it.
It bothers me a lot that you always talk about the voices (which are incredible)... but not about the music.

Since Ultra, Depeche Mode stopped being Depeche Mode... it stopped being dark...

I wouldn't say that the music stopped being dark - think of "The Child Inside" sung by Martin. It's quite dark, and it's in a later album. I would even say "Wrong" is dark, especially paired with the music video.

I invite you to watch the DVDs of Depeche Mode albums... how Alan Wilder spent his time looking for sounds for Martin's songs. On Music for the masses, violator and songs of faith an devotion... Martin was asked for very basic demos... so he could work on them later. All of that was Alan's work... as an example... enjoy the silence... Martin composed it as a sad song... with a church organ... and Alan was the one who made the music that we will all remember.
I'm not a fan of this song ;) my least Favourite from Sofad😮
