  • This is a LONG video as I cover each of my "upgrades" or what I've specifically done to build out my Dillon XL750. I tried (not so successfully) to start from the bottom of the press and work my way up on each upgrade or choice.
    Here's what the video covers (basically in this order) if you want to jump ahead or skip to what you may be more interested in seeing:
    1. Press cover (also did a powder measure/die cover - habit from my Hornady presses)
    2. Spent primer catch system
    3. Inline Fab riser mount
    4. Inline Fab ergo handle
    5. Locator Pin tabs (Inline Fab)
    6. Magnetic light from Amazon
    7. Anodized/engraved tool head
    8. Lee ultimate lock rings
    9. RCBS lockout die (double alpha has a GREAT concept of a RCBS lockout die and Dillon Powder Alarm/check having a baby - and reasonably priced)
    10. RCBS 9mm dies
    11. Hornady bullet feeder die/tubes
    12. Powder bar adjustment knob
    13: Springs for Powder measure (removed failsafe bar and zip tied mechanism)
    14. Bullet/powder strainer
    15. Double Alpha case feeder (additional stabilization bolt)
    16. DIY case feeder stop - 223/300 AAC casing
    17. Vibra prime for primers, no primer tubes - Hornady method for years
    18. Hex/Allen keys/wrenches and stand

    Dan at Inline Fabrication is truly a good guy. He has always quickly shipped out my items, and he made me 2 custom Quick Change plates for the 4" mini Quick Change Ultramount. I have 2 plastic mold injectors with unique bases on them and so Dan corresponded with me and put in a very thorough effort to fully understand what I needed and how to go about making it for my application. Took a little longer for him to get them made and shipped out but only because they were custom made. I got them shortly afterwards and everything lined up perfectly.

      Agreed, Dan rocks! Been in touch him lately as I have an idea for a new, mobile stand that I want to install a flush mount plate on so I can interchange other presses, very similar to my current mobile stand that has a custom mount from Inline. Everything custom from them is worth the wait IMO. Great products for the reloader!

    I have to tell you, I am fairly new to Reloading and before I ordered ANY of my equipment, I read a lot and educated myself the best that I can. My take on this is "I want to be SAFE!" I not only reload for myself, but for my son as well. My reloading has been thankfully going well. I have A DILLON XL750 PRESS. As you did, I started making a list of the things that could go "smoother". Then I found your page on upgrades. First let me say THANK YOU! Everything I ordered and upgraded for my press has come form you and your ideas. SPOT ON! Now reloading is even better, Again, I just wanted to thank you for the ideas research and videos. I am a retired Firefighter in Fla.
    Thanks again!

      You're welcome, Joe. Glad my videos were able to help you along your reloading path. FWIW, I updated this video with a second video (titled something along the lines of "more upgrades") and some additional items I added to the press to "make it better" IMO. You might find some of those additions useful as well.

    Great Info! I have an XL 750 showing up sometime this week to upgrade me from an RL 550B. Had already bought some upgrade mods for the 750, but had never seen the Vibra Prime. Good use of my Cabelas reward points. Also, ordered the Billet Tool Head (not anodized or engraved). I went with a small Led Dimmable Light strip on Amazon for $6 for lighting. Thanks!

    I had Herters, RCBS, Lee, and Lyman gear but when Dillon came out with their RL450 I was looking for something more efficient of my time. In 1984 no one else had anything close to affordable that would do rifle and pistol as efficiently for $185. Dillon has provided support and upgrades for that machine ever since, so now it is a 550B and could be a 550C with the available update. My old Dillon powder measure has those springs, that's the way they were done back then. Still works too. No other brand has done as much to support and update their equipment over the long term. I added an LNL AP to the collection in 2008 and it still doesn't seat the primers as deep as they should be and Hornady hasn't solved the underlying issues. Each manufacturer and each design has strengths and weaknesses. They are not the same in the details, some of which are important. If you want to save money by reloading you certainly can. Lee is usually the best value choice. If you want to spend a lot of money on gear there are plenty of extras and options one can buy. If you want the best gear then you will end up with a combination of brands because no one manufacturer makes the best of everything. Seating and crimping in one die is a compromise. Thanks to Re Loader for sharing experiences and making videos for us all to enjoy. I decided recently to get an XL750. It came yesterday. One minor adjustment was needed (plus the usual die setup), and it works perfectly, and seats primers properly 0.002 to 0.005" deep. I'm waiting on some warranty parts for the Hornady AP, we'll see if that fixes the primer seating depth issue, but it doesn't address the fundamental issue there - during priming the platform twists - and this binds up the primer seating piston. Hornady has offered no solution for the twisting. The Dillon's don't twist during priming. The devil is in the details... Happy Reloading..

      You're welcome. Just remember, there's an old saying "reloading will save you money..." and technically everything I reload is less expensive (from assembled individual components of brass, primer, powder and bullet perspective) than commercial ammo (30-70% "savings" depending on caliber), but I don't believe reloading has saved me any money. I have found that I shoot more than I would if I was buying commercial ammo and I'm ALWAYS buying some sort of reloading "tool" or thingy to improve the process. It's a hobby I truly enjoy, so I tend not to focus on the $ side. Good luck in your choices along your reloading journey.

    Great video! Only upgrade I don’t understand is the bullet feeder. Unless it’s some $10k fully automated setup, I see absolutely no gain as I can easy place a bullet just as quickly. However, the powder funnels that are made for the bullet feeder are awesome! It flares the cases perfectly. I just bought the Double Alpha funnel for 9mm

    Wow, I just watched the part about the RCBS lockout die and thought it looked really interesting. Went out to the reloading room and, lo and behold, my Dillon powder check is broken! Talk about timing. Guess I'll be checking out a new product soon.

    • @ReLoadersBench
      @ReLoadersBench  3 года назад +1

      You may also want to take a look at Double Alpha's powder check die. It offers the best of Dillon's (audible alert, no lockout function) and RCBS' (no audible but a lockout function) dies by having a single powder check that has an audible alert AND a lockout function. It's around the same price as the RCBS and Dillon product offerings. Food for thought.

    I have had my 750 for a few months... Some of your upgrades are similar to mine, others have me shaking my head. But good to live in a world where we have the options. 8^)
    Based on my experience with my SDB, I fully expected to end up with a primer catch upgrade like yours. The 750 has surprised me by not losing a single spent primer so far, so it has gotten to keep its original catch tray.
    Couldn't see not having an electric case feeder with a 750; it is really a game changer. I could understand going with the manual case feeder like you have as a temporary solution since the 750 is a big enough investment by itself, but do yourself a favor and get the electric one at your earliest opportunity.

    Awesome upgrades. I want to get the double alpha magnetic checker. they said the stock powder bar would not work with the Mini Mr. bullet feeder. and that I would need the short DAA powder bar they offer. would using the Pre-2000 springs that you did solve that problem? I believe that's why you switched. but wasn't sure if your Hornady bullet feeder set up is different than the mini Mr. bullet feeder. Plus you have the DAA checker is different than your RCBS checker. but would the pre 2000 springs suffice or would I still need the double alpha short powder bar. thanks in advance.

    • @ReLoadersBench
      @ReLoadersBench  3 года назад

      The AA short powder bar wasn't available (or I didn't know about it) when I was putting this press together early last year. I had to go with the double spring solution as I couldn't have the powder measure connected to the failsafe bar with my specific die configuration. I personally would start with the AA short powder bar and see if that addresses your specific issue before going with the springs.

      Since this project was to get honey bunny to load her 9mm, I decided to "pretty it up" and accessorize a bit. A bit of cosmetic indulgence for the most part (and it worked ;-) and even a few more on the follow upgrades video to this! The fail safe rod design is SO limiting, a negative IMO. But easy enough, albeit overly expensive to remedy.

    I like you have been reloading for years, I have Hornady, Lee and RCBS equipment and I have never seen a need to go with Dillion. It seems like everybody that has them are doing upgrades and changing stuff around and for the price don't think I need it. Just my observation.

    • @ReLoadersBench
      @ReLoadersBench  4 года назад +4

      I've heard for SO long the blue machine is "the one"...so I was at a point in my reloading journey to give it a try. To the folks who think this is the best reloading machine on the planet, I say "meh". No better (or worse) than my Hornady LnL presses. I like how Hornady has implemented some features better/different than Dillon and by the same token I like how Dillon has implemented some things better/different Hornady. They are both equal IMO. But, if I had to choose only ONE press to keep/own...it would be my Lee Classic Turret. Wouldn't give it a second thought.

    • @TheFreeman4955
      @TheFreeman4955 4 года назад

      Re Loader
      That is an interesting choice of which press to keep! Lee Classic Turret? I’m looking for my 1st press that I can easily swap calibers and pump out 1000-1500 Rounds a month. I’ve looked at the Hornady LNL, Dillon 650-750 and actually the Lee Turret. I was figuring the Lee Turret was more of a low end option. Maybe I should rethink that?

    • @TheFreeman4955
      @TheFreeman4955 4 года назад

      Also was looking at the Lee Auto Breech Lock Pro for a bit more speed and budget friendly. I like the Hornady LNL for price and ability to upgrade to the poor mans ammo plant. Seems everyone says the Dillon is hands down the best and “just works” with less tweaking needed but the price!

    • @livincincy4498
      @livincincy4498 4 года назад +1

      There is a video on here where the author compares the Lee Breech Lock Pro to the Load Master. He also compares Dillion & Hornady in his cost comparison.
      Oddly enough when you set up for three calibers with a case feeder the difference between Dillion & Hornady in price does not exist. Dillion does have many after market upgrades to get it to work that Hornady does not.

    • @livincincy4498
      @livincincy4498 4 года назад

      I use a Lee Turret with a case kicker for handgun. You can time videos on RUclips. It is easy to produce 200 in an hour. The Lee numbers on their website seem accurate on rounds per hour.
      Richard Lee wrote that a progressive press is suited to shooting more than 500 rounds per week of a caliber. That seems true. So, your individual need & budget requires a review.

The quick change setups were probably a total waste of money for the two Dillon presses, since they never leave their mounts and probably never will unless I move again. My single stage press has been removed from its mount maybe once or twice since I built my current bench, and then I have the last mount where the quick change feature actually gets used, which I use with various case trimmers, primer pocket swager, powder measure for single stage, etc.

    What would you say your total investment is? $

      Asking a reloader how much they spent on gear is akin to asking a woman her weight or age...such things are to be kept secret! If I thought about what I've spent on my reloading "hobby", I'd probably stop reloading as it's no doubt impacted retirement savings, LOL. I can say definitively I've not saved ANY money reloading because I've had too much fun finding/buying stuff I absolutely couldn't possibly live or reload without. But, if I had to put a number on my XL750 setup, I'd say around $1,000 (as I got the press for a steal right before the cough started and everything went crazy, literally).

    I don't understand why we have to upgrade a new machine. they should be 100% ready to go......

      Technically you don't have to upgrade the machine as it is 100% ready to go out of the box. But in terms of upgrades, the answer is simple...it's about $. No machine (or just about any "normal" [meaning not for the ultra rich] product) is built with every conceivable upgrade or option as it would just be too expensive. So the trade off is to produce a thing/machine capable of doing what it's designed to...but is capable of accepting options/upgrades to enhance/improve the overall process and or experience. Sometimes it's the manufacturer that produces the upgrades to increase their revenue stream while other times it's third parties trying to cash in as well. Plus, who doesn't love to accessorize or upgrade?
