The Wild Robot is a 2024 American animated science fiction survival film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders, produced by Jeff Hermann, and executive-produced by Sanders's longtime collaborative partner Dean DeBlois. It stars the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. In the film, Roz (Nyong'o), a robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, must adapt to her surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife, and become the adoptive mother of an orphaned gosling.

The lesson here is clearly “let Chris Sanders direct more things” because with Lilo and Stitch, the first How To Train Your Dragon and now this??? Bro knows how to make a masterpiece
100% agree
@@erikdaniels0n kind of makes me wonder what his version of American dog would look like (his version of bolt), definitely would have been interesting.
Don’t forget The Croods
@@johnnysparkle I actually didn’t see The Croods lol
I'm just now learning that he didn't co-direct How To Train Your Dragon 2 and 3.
here's an easter egg for you: the robot is from Rozzum Universal Dynamics, a reference to Rossum's Universal Robots, a Czech play that introduced the word 'robot' to the English language.
What I really love about this movie is that the animals are not portrayed as people playing animals with the occasional quirk to hint they’re animals.
No, they portrayed having self preservation as a priority, a little bit of inherent hostility even when they’re being helpful, and a casual acceptance that yea, it’s a survival of the fittest world- they will try to eat their neighbors if given the chance.
And they still give nuanced performances despite this. It reminds me of the older Bluth films that have gruff, mean, and casually aggressive characters yet have a tender side as well.
Ooooohh I never thought about the Bluth comparison, that’s a cool thought!
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 Thanks
Like in the movie, in the book it's based on, Roz learns the language of the animals, which becomes spoken words to the reader, so I figured the animals talking wouldn't ruin the film, and it didn't. Seriously, this movie is so gorgeous and so heartfelt, one of DreamWorks' best films in years.
2022 had both The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2, then we had Ruby Gillman (average), Kung Fu Panda 4 (average, but in a more painful and disappointing way), Megamind 2 (one of their worst), and Trolls 3 (haven't watched and don't intend to). Dreamworks has always been inconsistent, but a five movie losing streak is still shocking to see from them. However, The Wild Robot isn't just a step up, it's a rocket up from the quality of their movies in 2023 and 2024. Easily top 10 from them
I saw this last night, and there were several kids in the theatre. Like Doug, I noticed (and loved) the blunt, 80s PG-style humor, and I wondered what the effect would be. You know what it was? Laughter. Just pure, unadulterated laughter. The kids relished the darker jokes, and their parents were laughing right along with them, not clutching pearls about their fragile psyches. It's amazing what happens when you give your audience a bit of intellectual credit. All in all, I absolutely adored this. The action sequences - especially the opening 15 minutes - were gorgeous, almost Brad Bird-esque. The dialogue was heartfelt, funny, and just the right amount of treacly when called for. I agree with Doug that the third act goes a bit off the rails with the scale of the action and the unnecessary introduction of an antagonist, but it's still handled well and makes for a lovely ending. This is the best Dreamworks picture in a while, and in my weird nerdy brain it kind of bridges the gap between "WALL-E" and "Iron Giant" in terms of wondrous animated robot films.
We need Dreamworks-uary to come back
I whole heartedly agree. We need to try to persuade Doug.
I’m down for that now that the DreamWorks catalogue has expanded. Maybe we can include the DreamWorks produced animated series.
Like the Penguins of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda Legends of Awsomeness and Dragons riders of Berk @@myriadmediamusings
Same💯💯💯
There’s a lot he’ll need to catch up on
The animation is what gripped me from the trailers. I'm not sure why, but I just loved the colors and style from what I saw.
Same. The animation looks stunning and fantastic
It was so good my eyes were cumming
It reminded me of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, especially the eyes.
@@jlev1028 Yeah and Puss In Boots The Last Wish is great
I honestly prefer this style over realistic CG animated films
Could see Transformers One and the Wild Robot as a double feature
Robot-heimer
A double feature that would still lose to Beetlejuice in the end because of Halloween.
@@elizabethk007 oh both TF one and this are outstanding movies
I'm literally doing that right now lol. Saw Transformers today and going to Wild Robot tomorrow.
@@ckm5702The Wild Autobot
Chris Sanders always knows how to crank peak animated films
💯💯💯💯
He did direct Lilo and Stitch, after all😌😌😌😌😌
Watch "Flow" if you want an animated movie were the animal characters don't talk, it comes out on December 6 in theaters
Or Robot Dreams, which is a masterpiece and also dialogue free
You know when you finish a good film in the theatre and walk out with that nice feeling?
The Wild Robot delivered that feeling 100%
"He's not someone who puts on a lot of make-up..." THEN HOW DOES HE LOOK LIKE A FOX IN THIS MOVIE?!
Uh, CGI? Like everything else?
Whatever you say, but an Original Non-sequel animated film sends me great relief
Are you going to see The Wild Robot?

Please review Transformers One.
No, but I am going to see transformers one. 🤭
Yes, in 3D 4DX
Thanks to your insight I’ll definitely go see it, so thank you.
OH THIS MOVIE IS OUTSTANDING doug
It looks AMAZING!
11:42 I think this is the third time I've seen this happen in a Doug Review. First Breaking Dawn Part 1, then Mulan 2020 and now this.
True💯💯
Between this and Transformers One, we've gotten some great robot films lately.
True!
Everybody's raving about this movie, so that makes me happy! Chris Sanders is a great director so I guess it's to be expected!
A bit bummed you skipped Transformers One, NGL. Especially given how its utterly sweeping the rating and review websites.
Who knows? Maybe he could give it like a Nostalgia Critic/Bum Reviews review, since the Transformers movie was his first review.
@@myriadmediamusings He was at a convention this past week. So he didnt have time to see and review T-One
@thedisneynerd7866 So given the praise, he may check it out at a later point for a wrap up of stuff he missed, or even just a nostalgia critic since it's based off a property from his childhood.
Transformers One is just ok How Megatron became evil made little to no sense other than he had a dark side and liked power
@@rancidiot He was lied to by the guy who he thought saved the entire transformers race. And that betrayal made him lean in to his darker side.. it made perfect sense
I need a Doug Reviews: Transformers One. Scratch that make it a Double Feature
Im with basically everyone else. Transformers One is genuinely excellent. Sure, theres a lot you can kinda predict like what the big twist is and how the friendship between the two main characters breaks apart into enmity, but its done masterfully.
The trailers really sold the film short
2:47 as an adult, that baby possum joke was hysterical. But yeah, toddlers might find the movie too distressing.
Sorry to hear about the fatigue. Hope you feel better
Wall E is the best movie with minimun dialogues.
Really hope, Doug, that you get a chance to check out Transformers One whenever you can, as I know you have a rocky relationship with the Micheal Bay Transformers movies as I can guarantee that this movie is genuinely the best Transformers movie (the trailers did not do this movie enough justice) and does a great job at developing the Transformers on a deeper level while being a fun and entertaining movie for both kids and adults and truly a love letter to Transformers fan in general as you can feel the passion. It is also an incredibly emotional story about the friendship of Optimus and Megatron and the tragedy of how they became enemies, with some genuinely dark and even gruesome moments that will shock you.
Best part is that it’s not even connected to the Michael Bay movies.
Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Josh Cooley confirmed in an interview that TF One is a standalone feature.
Which is certainly news to me, because I figured Lorenzo would try to pull the same bullshit with Bumblebee and ROTB being prequels, despite being confirmed by both Hasbro and the directors of both respective films that they’re reboots.
I saw this with my kids and I loved it. They read the book but I hadn't so I didn't know what to expect. I am dragging my friends to see it because it is beautiful animation and it made me cry so much.
Gotta love that the ad on this was for Wild Robot
Just got back from seeing the film with my older brother and it’s definitely one of Chris Sanders’ best works along with Lilo & Stitch and the first How to Train Your Dragon. It really is an emotional experience, it’s hard not to get misty-eyed at any point while watching this film. I didn’t mind the cliche climax as it showed how far the forest animals came in viewing Roz, the titular wild robot from a monster to their friend and are willing to fight for her and how far her surrogate goose son would go to return his love by saving her after she spent nearly her “task” saving him.
I typically despise it when celebrity's are brought in to voice in an animated movie since voice acting is different than acting but with the Wild Robot I couldn't tell who was voicing who. The acting was just that good. I was very surprised with Pedro Pascal's performance in this. I saw the movie last night with my mom and she was in tears.
So glad to see you support and review this film though really hope you don't end up skipping Transformers One all together
The 7th kid turned out to be ok a minute later 😊
I will say though, the animation style looks downright GORGEOUS! I might want to see it just on the animation alone
Soooo true
Was really looking forward to a Transformers One review... It needs all the help it can get, seeing how the first trailer really sabotaged its box office run...
Echoing the rest. Transformers One pls
So excited to see this! I have an "animation buddy" that I go to see animated movies with, the only one of my friends who appreciates the art form as much as I do. Glad to hear it's living up to the hype, thanks for your thoughts Doug!
Feel better Doug, I know how busy your schedule is while also fighting this super annoying fatigue.
This has easily become a top 10 Dreamworks movie for me. I really wish we had a silent film version, but it didn't disappoint despite that. It's a heartwarming film about parenthood, finding one's place, and fighting against instinct and societal norms. I don't think it's quite top 5, but it's unquestionably top 10 imo
As someone who has raised goslings and ducklings I cringed so hard when Doug said he thought they grew up in three years
To me, The Wild Robot looks like a combo of a Miyazaki film and Wall•e.
It was cool getting to meet you in person Doug
I watched the film a few hours ago and, as Dreamwork's last in-house animated film, it couldn't be any better. The sentimental atmosphere felt like a combination of Wall-E and Iron Giant, the main character was a fusion of EVE and Baymax, and I swear it got the animatora from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The Wild Robot is such a stunning feature despite its predictable, derivative premise. I even appreciated how subtle the worldbuilding is. You don't hear any explicit explanation of what happened to humanity and why they were forced to move into plexiglass covered facilities, but the visual storytelling says everything from a sunken Golden Gate Bridge and half submerged skyscrapers to a piece of forest being reduced to an island. The only problem I had was the voices. Don't get me wrong, Lupita and Pedro Pascal did a fantastic job. The former was unrecognizable without her thick Kenyan accent and the latter sounded like he was trying to imitate Jason Bateman's Nick Wilde but in a unique way. I just wish it would've been like the first half of Wall-E with little dialogue. I don't care for the translator justification. The movie didn't need much talking. Also, most of the jokes sucked too. Overall, The Wild Robot may not be Prince of Egypt or How to Train Your Dragon 2, but it's a good 30th anniversary sendoff.
Sounds like the perfect way to describe it.
This movie actually the adaptation of very good book. And highly recommend it for every parents with kids. Because… U know, the illustrations are adorable, the story is cute. I truly think it’s really good for the whole family
I really hope that they make the movie adaptations of the trilogy! I’ve read all but the third book
The fox was a GEM! Funny but also a sweetheart. I personally loved the storybook animation style which went well with the sweet heartwarming story that also was so emotional
if you see this bring tissues. I was tearing up a lot
All I was thinking during the climax was the Murder Drones main villain
Doug I need you to do a review of Transformers One! Please!
That thumbnail is cursed
This is the third time a robot has caused me emotional pain.
You need to review Transformers One since you know its a tradition for you to review the Transformers movies.
Transformers One is also 80’s PG.
1:18 ehhhh I still love Dinosaur’s characters and dialogue. I know that’s a hot take (and yesss I love Land Before Time too, I love them both)
I prefer the tame human
😅
Don't worry doug! Any video from you is amazing and welcomed❤
He’s awesome
My audience was laughing, crying , and clapping throughout the movie! Can’t recommend this movie enough!
The Wild Robot, to me, has to be the best animated film of this year. The animation style looks like it takes inspiration from Spider-verse to make it look like a storybook that works for this kind of film.
I highly recommend people go and watch it. I haven't seen a cinematic story since Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
I just watched it. It was fantastic.
I just saw this movie today and there were a few kids who were like 4 or 5, and a few seats across from me was a toddler who occasionally clapped at scenes.
Just got back from the theater. This film was exceptional. SO much heart.
Any word on a Transformers One review?
If you read the book, then yes, it is much more messed up.
In the book, several of Roz's friends die from the Winter. It is not a book that holds back.
Can’t wait til transforms and this comes to uk
This is up there with WALL-E, the HTTYD series and Lilo & Stitch, just OMG one of the most memorable, breathtaking, and heartwarming animated movies of 2024.
Saw TF1 last week, but was looking forward to the Wild Robot for most of the year. Between the two WR is definitely Robot film of 2024
I felt like the beginning was very rushed (up until the gosling grows up) and I remember thinking I hope it was because there was going to be a lot of story at the end and they needed the time, and not just that no one knows how to write a good story anymore. The first was the case - a lot happens. But I agree that some of that stuff at the end could have been cut and then given to the beginning for more development. The beginning was also surprisingly violent, though most of it was done for humor. Like they literally drop-kick that gosling into the water and shoot him up in the air like a rocket.
Actually really loved this film. I cried a couple of times during the film
I told my wife I was surprised by how much a movie based a kids book talked candidly about death.
The movie is Great! The animation is fantastic, lots of action Its a bit cheesy but i like cheesy 😅 yeah it pulled it off highly recommended 10/10
Saw this at my local MJR last Saturday. It was good.
I was hoping it was silent too similar to Wall-E before going up to space
Saw this in IMAX it was incredible
You know, after seeing the first trailer for the movie actually made me want to read the book and it's equally good!
AWESOME
Never read the book but the movie looks fabulous
Please do a review for Transformers One.
I very much enjoyed the film. I read the 1st book so knew where it was going. I quite enjoyed the visuals style of this film, it worked for me.. it didn't think it was lazy but more artistic like paint strokes. The music was also great. It was a delightful film. Glad I saw it with my Mother and child.
Great movie! My seven year old said it was the best movie he’s ever watched in his life. The whole family really enjoyed it.
Please review Transformers One, is easily the best one, surprised you haven’t talked bout it yet
It’s such a fantastic movie
I really hope it does well enough so we can get those sequels.
It’s also not out in many other countries. And toy sells usually also count towards it (like the teenage mutant ninja turtles movie)
Im surprised. The trailers made me roll my eyes a lot at the dialog. It just seemed like a kids movie that was trying to be cool but I might check it out since its getting so much praise.
Honestly, I think the film was much better with the dialogue
Why would you think a movie made primarily for children wouldn't have any dialouge? No kid is going to sit through that.
Just watched this now and man this movie was freaking amazing!
Not at all from what I thought it was going to be!
I haven't seen the movie yet. But when I first saw the teaser, I was like "They made a movie specifically for me." I love robots, I love animals, I love found family. I went and looked it up and discovered it was based on a book. So I listened to the audio book while at work and was like "If this had come out when I was a kid, this would have been my favorite book." So I wasn't too surprised when the first trailer finally dropped and the animals talked, though I was a little worried about how it would be handled (which is why I came to check out a few reviews). All that said, I'm super excited to go see this!
I definitely had the same impression, that the movie was going to be mostly silent, similar to WALL-E. After seeing the later trailers and that they do talk, i was a bit disappointed. But after seeing it, it certainly works really well. I actually love the VA for Rozz slowly putting more emotion & heart in her voice as she raises the Goose.
It really is a great kids movie in that that is doesn't talk down or try to soften things up for them. It shows the hard realities and trying to survive in spite of that.
This movie is based on a book for children btw. I know this because it’s part of the Year 6 English curriculum in Australia, specifically New South Wales. Lol
Definitely check out transformers one would love to hear your thoughts it’s great
I hope that your next nostalgia critic review will maybe feature a movie with Maggie Smith in it as a way to honour her passing?
It’s sad but does he need to?
@@chasehedges6775 I just thought it would be nice; there’s nothing wrong with that is there?
@@magicman1921 NOPE. I was saddened by her passing
Ever since I saw who was directing it and the art style, I kinda knew that it was going to be at the very least good.
Same here. It looks fabulous
Chris Sanders is good
How did I not notice this comes out in America today?
I really hope ya’ll go see Transformers One! It’s a great film (the trailers are lies in all honesty with the quality of the movie) and can get emotional at times!
I have yet to see The Wild Robot…but I have a feeling it’ll shatter my heart with tears as well!
just came from it and i was in tears at the end
@@AngelWingsYTdude my mouth was wide open in shock, that has never happened to me before while watching anything!
Doug, please, listen, PLEASE, Transformers One is astonishing.
I agree, I thought this movie was gonna be silent, but I liked Dinosaur and so I gave this movie a chance, and I'm so glad I did
Doug did you see transformers one
Please review Transformers One, it is really good
Honestly, I agree with the issues of the pacing and the climax. It felt like there was some missing scenes that would've helped the emotional moments. Scenes of Roz slowly shifting from "This is just a task" to "I'm a mother" would've really strengthened the relationship she has with Bright Bill, not to mention some scenes that slowly build trust between Roz and the other animals would help the winter rescue scene.
For the climax, honestly, I didn't think there needed to be an antagonist. You could simply have the reason that Roz has to go back be that, if she doesn't, she will die. They show a scene in the middle of the movie, after she gets her wooden prosthetic leg, where she's leaking green liquid which I thought would play a role in the movie but, it doesn't. This could actually be the catalyst for why she has to go. This liquid could be a coolant or something that, if she runs out of, will cause her to overheat and eventually shut down forever. Roz doesn't want to leave her new family, stating that this is an environment that is hostile and beings die all the time. However, the other animals tell her that she changed them of that mindset and want her to survive as she did for them during the winter. Then, you could have the ending play out as it did in the movie.
I never saw the teaser only the trailer with talking but now that you mention it, this does sound like the kind of movie where at least limited talking would make sense. I can't wait to see this anyway; it sounds fun.
I went to watch that movie without any expectations and without knowing anything about it other than the trailer, and I was simply amazed at everything from the movie (except, like you said, for the cliché part at the end)
Nah I think this movie was absolutely perfect. Nothing about this movie was just “good” to me. It was at minimum jaw-dropping/phenomenal/mindblowing. Loved the ending action sequence as it actually enhanced the film even more. My 9 year old loved it too lol he gave it a “13/10” 😂
this may be the Best animated movie with a whole lot of heart
please watch Transformers One, the first trailer did not do the film any justice and its way better than it looks storywise
Yeah, I knew this film’s twisted sense of humour alone would be enough to make it appeal to Doug. For me, it’s a masterpiece on every level, from humour to animation to the copious amounts of heart.
A minor correction: the film takes place over the course of a year or so. They specifically say that Brightbill has to fly by fall, with nothing to indicate that it’s fall in a year or two. So basically, it starts in spring, a bunch of stuff happens in summer, then we get the winter sequence (all pretty clearly shown in the trailer, so no spoilers).
Regarding the ‘liar revealed’ storyline, I personally think they don’t fully resolve the issue until the climax of the movie. The characters push through with their physical goals because they have to, but they don’t ultimately resolve their differences until right near the end. But because the script keeps the story moving, it doesn’t feel like the stereotypical ‘third-act breakup’ version of this type of plot beat. Much as with How to Train Your Dragon, Chris Sanders is a master of pacing here.
There’s a movie out right now that follows a Cat traveling on a journey that has no dialogue it’s called Flow.
If I might make a suggestion regarding the fatigue, I suffered CONSTANT physical fatigue for a long time until I started taking Bloom, now it's pretty much gone.
For as inconsistent as Dreamworks is... Whenever they make a good movie. They swing for the fences! I'm seeing this movie on Sunday and if it's as good as i've heard it is. Than maybe this could top Inside Out 2 and Transformers One
Sooooo true
Puss In Boots 2 was good.
Honestly I was the same way I was a little disappointed to find out that there was talking in it but after watching it I was surprised with how good the dialogue was it felt less like oh lets put in some lame catchphrases and such and more like hey lets try to write stuff that doesn't sound lame and the rest of the movie was really good as well I honestly think this might a return a form for dreamworks after movies like Ruby Gillman,Trolls band together, and Kung fu panda 4 I do think there on right track (By the way I haven't seen Orion and the dark so I don't know if that's any good or not)
