You will notice that three Benders weren't supposed to enter the cell of a non-bender until he was in the far wall looking away - and in the most unaccessible prison you could conceive of. This should give you an idea of how dangerous Zaheer was - before becoming an airbender.
About his skill at airbending, Zaheer is in a league of his own. He was a student of the disciplines and arts for decades. Plus, he is an iron willed zealot. That's a powerful combination.
I cannot wait for more of this. Zaheer is the most terrifying villain in all of animation (and that is a hill I will die on). He didn’t just flatten the airbending learning curve, he smashed it to smithereens. Having been isolated for so long, he had nothing to do but meditate and be alone with his thoughts, making him HIGHLY spiritual. So when harmonic convergence granted him the gift of airbending, he was an immediate master. The man is calm, collected, manipulative, and extremely capable, which also makes him very dangerous.
Zaheer's introduction is definitely one of if not the best character introductions in Avatar and one of the best character introductions in any show I've seen, either animated or live-action. So much is communicated about his character in a relatively short monologue while still leaving plenty of mystery in regards to his background and motivations.
If there's one quote I could highlight from his monologue that I feel is sometimes overlooked (don't get me wrong, his entire speech to the guards is fantastic) it's the part where he says, "Nature is constantly changing, like the wind." One of the central themes of this season, Korra's journey, and Zaheer's character can be summed up by this one sentence.
It was SOOOO well done - instantly got me intrigued and I had major chills rewatching it while editing this video
"Nature is constantly changing, like the wind." this can also be applied to how legend of korra treats the lore... s3 definitely is what keeps this show above the water, s2 was just horrendous and a hard watch if you're a fan of the Original show
The best part of watching Korra reaction videos is watching people's initial reaction to Zuko's return.
The backstory to the Republic is that its the land that the Fire Nation conquered first and had been under control of the Fire Nation so long that many Fire Nation and Earth Nation people intermarried and Fire Nation people were native born to that land. As a compromise between the Fire Nation and Earth Nation, the disputed territory was made independent and autonomous.
You can see how the Earth Queen would be a little miffed about that but her father the Earth King from ATLA supported the compromise.
Did you notice the lava Bending? It's earth bending they heat up the rock into lava and bends it, just like how water benders can cool the water into ice bending

*SWITCHED TO ZHAEER PRISON*
Zaheer was the only one in his group to spontaneously gain bending. The others never lost their abilities, but were kept in prisons that suppressed their bending.
- Gazan is an earth bender (with the sub-bending ability to lava bend) and was kept in a wooden prison in the middle of the ocean where he had no access to earth, which is why Zaheer threw him some rocks during his prison break.
- Ming-Hua is a water bender, she was kept in a volcano prison, surrounded by oppressive heat, where any small amount of water would evaporate. So for her prison break, they brought a large supply of water, enough that wouldn't evaporate quickly.
- P'Li is a fire bender (and combustion bender) so her prison is so cold that her body temperature is too low to produce a significant amount of fire. I won't say any more about her, even though I'm sure you've already watched the next few episodes.
17:20 you're so right. It's devastating to learn that pretty much as soon as Aang is not around anymore, more airbenders are brought into the world, meaning that he will never know. On the other hand, it seems pretty clear that if not for *something* that happened during harmonic convergence, the airbenders would not have returned in the first place. And I believe that Aang would be incredibly honored and happy if he knew that his sacrifice contributed to bringing back airbenders.
Also, a thought: we've seen how many previous avatars there have been (as in: very many, as shown in ep3 of ATLA in the Southern Air Temple). All of them were airbenders. Could it be possible that the "release" of their spirits brought that airbending ability to certain people? Like, however many avatars there were, that is the number of new airbenders? Their last sacrifice was one more pursuit of bringing balance to the world? Idk this one is just a random idea.

I quoted Zaheer’s speech to the guards in a college essay way back for a winter semester English course I took. Idk if my professor at the time knew about the show, he was a grad student adjunct prof so definitely possible, but he loved the zaheers quotes!
For a show that didn't have more than one season planned originally, this has a fantastic 4 seasons, with great villains for all of them.

While Amon will always be my favourite LoK villain just because he ticks all the boxes for things I look for in an intriguing villain, Zaheer isn't far behind and I can totally see why he is the favourite for so many people. You're gonna love him!
