My theory is that they scrapped it because they decided Mario isn't from New Donk, and therefor doesn't fully fit in. At the end of Yoshi's Island, baby Mario is "born" in what looks like a small village. The people of that village probably look like the people in scrapped New Donk. When Mario became an adult, he then moved to New Donk and saved Pauline. If they make Odyssey 2 and reveal Mario's hometown then I'll freak out!
@@shibamayo5232 Explain Donkey Kong the arcade game. Mario, Pauline, and DK are all there in a city. Probably after Yoshi's island, the Yoshi's returned Mario and Luigi to their predestined house in New Donk City where they had their DK adventure. Then Mario and Luigi fell down a pipe and found their way to the Mushroom Kingdom
@@shibamayo5232 Ok. Good research. My only questions are: why is Pauline the mayor if Mario and Pauline lived in the same city? And can we please have this scrapped stuff back?!?

Still don't get why they couldn't do both. Reference older nintendo consoles AND donkey kong. Even more so, for what they released they didn't reference the gameboy donkey kong at all; considering it not only a reimagining, but had it's own city as well. In fact each store could of been a reference. It feels they just made it a more generic donkey kong city over what it could of been. Not even a "Mario Versus Donkey Kong" reference, which was a sequel to the gameboy donkey kong mentioned before; all it's power-up's skills and such carried over too. Reemmber mario jumping into a headstand, then a second jump and a triple jump with a tada at the end? Gameboy donkey kong started that and the coolest thing? It wasn't unlockable, it was avaliable from the start. Sure you were told about it later, but if you already played the game; playing a new game with that knowledge made the game 10x easier.
I mean, Mario ALSO ran theme parks too, so I think he might just be a humble plumber who happens to run the economy through honest business and charm to spare.
Holy shit I can't believe you guys are back together on this channel! I used to watch you guys yeaaaaaars ago but then Chris left and you stopped uploading. Good to see you guys are back at it
Seeing that concept art somehow reminded me of a scene from the Super Mario Bros Super Show with Mario Bros at the Plumber Academy with differently colored suited plumbers. I guess it was necessary for Mario to really stand out against everything so that Mario is always the Mysterious Marvel to anyone, especially for New Donk City.
OH MAN! I never realised that the Mario Brothers. Plumbing Service building wasn't in New Donk City until you mentioned it!...though if it was actually in the game it most certainly wouldn't look like the concept art because it would be abandoned ever since Mario and Luigi found that warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom.
seriously I was kind of dissapointed when I got to new donk city and discovered the whole area was about the size of street I live on> I was hoping for some allot better not gtav scale but even one fith or tenth of that would have given given us tons to do and explore
I would LOVE to see a creepy kingdom. With traditional spooky Mario enemies like boos, peepas, and maybe a big, creepy boss battle too. When you capture a boo, you can travel through walls, sort of like with the boo mushroom from super Mario Galaxy. It would be EXCELLENT to make the kingdom like the ghost house in SM64 or Luigis mansion.
I’m personally a lot more interested in the New Donk we got Maybe it’s just cause I love New York but I think since Odyssey is about exploring places that it seems Mario wouldn’t go, with just a TOUCH of that cartoony magic to make it somewhat fit This however could’ve been in ANY Mario game, however the Donk City we got HAS to be in Odyssey because of its theme
Someone better mod that scrapped New Donk City cause that looks amazing! Edit: I believe that M on that building is canon cause it appears in a cutscene in I believe the first Mario Vs. Donkey Kong game. And,that's also where the Mario mini toys are made.
Looks fine but the juxtaposition of boring businessmen being lambasted by Mario bouncing on their cabs and jumping off buildings was way better. It's such a fun area because it's so plain, but Mario and his cartoony antics break the structure of the city. This concept art is fine but it just looks like a normal Mario game, nothing too interesting about it.
The building could be a Mario vs. Donkey Kong reference. Also, I'm totally headcanoning this is what the rest of the city (aside from the building we see the top of) looks like.
Man, I friggin love Odyssey so much (even got my copy signed by Charles Martinet himself), but this New Donk City could’ve made that level so much more memorable (and possibly even viable for future appearances). Don’t get me wrong, I love the New Donk City for how much it contrasts with Mario, but some place that actually feels like a part of Mario and his direct (in the sense that it refers to Mario’s personal life instead of his gaming appearances) history would’ve been awesome.
I hope the New Donkers were just a one-off thing, and that humans from other cities in that world are Cartoony. also, this city is much more unique and less realistic. The one we ended up getting tried too hard to be realistic, and that's why it can't live up to this one. Look at the color and building design in the scrapped version. Much more Cartoony and lively.
It definitely works. I get that they were going for an uncanny realism. But I hope cities in future Mario games really live up to the potential of this concept art.
Im like the only one who prefers the final. While i like the concept, i dont know, it really wowed me when i saw mario with real looking humans in a realistic city. I probably would not have the same reaction if it was cartoony, But whatever. I think the final is better.
I personally wished Odyssey actually took you to places used within Mario Kart, expanded upon places from the main games (Like the jungle world of NSMB is the Lost Kingdom), and more.
Whoah, has it really been almost eight years since Mario Odyssey came out already? Wow! Time sure does fly fast! Still feels like I'm living in 2010! Mario Odyssey was a total blast when it came out in 2009! (That's just sarcasm btw. Yeah I get the joke about your viewers 8 years from now)
2:32 - with your tone and the scene transition of tearing away the greyed-out concept art, I almost expected you were gonna follow up that *_"Well, that's it!"_* with a *_"Fuck this entire franchise, I am DONE!"_* Like the scrapped concept of New Donk City and what it could've been was enough to completely destroy your investment in the Mario franchise. It gave me a chuckle...
Man I really wish they stuck with the human designs that looked similar to mario, that would be so much better than those weird looking humans in the game And my DLC world choice would be Isle Delfino, I mean come on, it’s such a cool place to be
This should definitely be in the game if we have a Galaxy 2-esque sequel in the future. However, I'm heaps happier to have gotten what we did get! The Donkey Kong scene was one of the most wonderful, powerful parts of the game, and I love the style of the New Donk City we got!
I always hated the humans in Odyssey. They look really bad like PS2 models, plus it feels so uncanny and weird for them to be in a Mario game... I wish the humans looked more cartoony, like Peach, Pauline, Mario & Luigi, Toads, etc. Also I'm kinda bummed that Mario's plumbing shop was scrapped too, that could've been really cool. As for the DLC kingdoms -- Delfino Kingdom and maybe a Galaxy Kingdom where Rosalina's Observatory appears in the Moon Kingdom and you can enter a couple of Galaxy levels. I think these would both be really cool, but my #1 pick is a Bob-Omb Battlefield Kingdom (maybe just called the "Battlefield Kingdom" or something). The entrance painting could be added into a new room somewhere in Peach's castle.
*_I swear to you..................this might've been scrapped in the game, but I can bet you this will be used for the "Super Nintendo World" in "Universal Orlando" when it is built._*
As cool as the concept idea of New Donk City is, I could understand why they scrapped the design. Most of the design could easily be seen in Mario Spin-off titles which feels like Mario had never left the Mushroom Kingdom. The game's theme is ment to travel the world outside the Mushroom Kingdom, so seeing this kinda losses that appeal. Would be cool for Nintendo to come back to this and use for something else though.
i dont know why they thought a level based on a real life setting would've been a better idea than this, i would've loved to see this instead of what we have!
I so need Nintendo to explain why Mario looks so different when compared to the "humans". Like, my personal theory is that he is another species completely. That'd also explain his stamina and strength and how he can jump like four meters into the air in a gravity seven times our own without breaking a sweat... or his legs.
Imagen if that the old New Donk City design is used for another place and the New Donk City in Odyssey is a different place entirely, meaning that Mario and Luigi came from the old place. I would also like if they had a cut scene where Mario and Luigi return to there plumbing headquarters to find it falling apart due to them not being there to take care of it for 30 years, and we could get a flashback of the old days when they did plumbing.
Is anyone gonna point out the fact Luigi is in this picture and in many other pictures shown off, but he isnt playable in the game or has a significant role in the game either??!
The New Donk City we got looked so plain and boring. But the scrapped one looks to fun and colorful. I think it would’ve been more appropriate if they would’ve kept the scrapped one because the Mario universe is bright and colorful after all.
"It's clear that the finalized version of New Donk City shows that Mario was never born to live here"; OF COURSE NOT; don't you remember the Yoshi's Island Trilogy that stated it's the case? As for why he's in the Mushroom Kingdom, yet New Donk City plasters DK references and Pauline being the mayor? My guess is that Mario immigrated to New Donk City (long before it was called that), and worked as a carpenter like his father before him (possibly making Wrecking Crew canon). It wouldn't be until Donkey Kong '94 for the Game Boy where he has to rescue Pauline, (possibly his sister, since Lady and Jumpman were his parents), and ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom afterwards. Because of his actions to stop Donkey Kong (the necktie wearing ape who's the father of Donkey Kong Jr, and is the grandson of the original DK, Cranky Kong), they did this in remembrance of the family legacy that effected their lives, beginning with Mario's father, Jumpman.
II Piantissimo well I thought so too at first but reading the brochures for Bowser's Kingdom, it's seemingly implied that Bowser conquered it, and the bulk of the Koopa clan doesn't actually reside there. Bowser's Kingdom I'm pretty sure is supposed to be the Dark World from Super Mario Bros 3. Which I'd love to see again in a modern game!
Knowing Nintendo this concept isn't entirely scrapped. They will bring it back in some form eventually. The only question is when and in which game. They probably had reasons to cut out the cartoon people. Maybe they look more like Mario in Nintendo's version of Brooklyn. 😁

I would love to see Isle Delphino or a Koopa Kingdom (maybe with Princess Bowsette)
Delphino Plaza would be amazing
@@ChrisCrossMedia No pls
We already have Koopa Kingdom. Remember the Japanese themed kingdom?
II Piantissimo well I thought so too at first but reading the brochures for Bowser's Kingdom, it's seemingly implied that Bowser conquered it, and the bulk of the Koopa clan doesn't actually reside there.
Bowser's Kingdom I'm pretty sure is supposed to be the Dark World from Super Mario Bros 3. Which I'd love to see again in a modern game!
NORMIE ALERT
Wow, New Donk looked way cooler in the concept art.
I loved new donk but I think I would have like that way more
I wanna see the Bean Bean Kingdom from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in this game so much
Yes I can believe
Time fliesssss
Knowing Nintendo this concept isn't entirely scrapped. They will bring it back in some form eventually. The only question is when and in which game. They probably had reasons to cut out the cartoon people. Maybe they look more like Mario in Nintendo's version of Brooklyn. 😁
I still believe we will see this in some form...remember Linkle?..
believe me knowing how nintendo is to limit and get to the developers I don't think we'll see this for now and it's sad
