TUTORIAL - My "City of Stars" ukulele fingerstyle cover

- Due to popular demand. My advice: definitely try to rely more on your musical ears and vision rather than the words that come out of my mouth when you watch this--it was only until after I started editing this video that I realized how muddled some of my explanations were xD. So I apologize!!! If you run into any trouble, feel free to comment below. And I'd absolutely LOVE to see this cover played by somebody other than myself, so by all means let me know in the comments if you upload yourself playing this!
Also disclaimer: this video only teaches you how to play the tricky fingerstyle part of the song. The rest--the strumming pattern and duet portion of the melody--were excluded due to video length (it's also the more self-explanatory part anyway).
It's been a very rough week, so I'm glad I was distracted for at least a little while during the making of this tutorial. :)

Try it on a soprano uke. The frets are closer together!
Thanks so much for this great tutorial! I couldn’t reach my pinkie finger for the intro so I played 2nd fret on C first fret on E open A and then 5th fret on A to make it easier for anyone else struggling with reaching the pinkie finger.

For all those with Dm + pinky problems - You can use your middle finger to switch between the third and fourth string. Worked for me :)
Kumar Anubhav i cant even do that on muy tenor :(, but what mi doing is just use my other hand for that note while still struming with that hand

ahhh yes, that one is hard. one thing to remember is that it's not always necessary to have the pinky on the fifth fret the entire time in the beginning (as I do in the video). and probably the most important thing: finger muscles develop over time with practice! what once felt impossible for your hand can most definitely become possible with consistent effort and time. just keep practicing and try not to get too discouraged if it feels too hard in the beginning--that's normal!

it's easier to get your pinky on the fifth fret during the intro if you use your middle finger to switch between the 3rd and 4th strings!! just thought i'd share since it made it so much easier for me (i have really tiny hands)

For people with small hands move your wrist you dont need to hold down the other 2 keys the entire time you can shift it on the hird when you reach the pinky and shift it back onto the second fret using your wrist and move your other fingers.. you can do it i swear she does the same thing you can see it in the actual video

Haha I beg to differ! :) I have extremely small hands too, to the point where playing that D minor in the beginning was literally impossible. But with about 2-3 days' practice I could do it. So don't give up! haha

Renée Munneke I think one thing that helped me was leaving my pinky off the entire time EXCEPT when I really needed to use it during that Dm. That way your pinky's not always stretched out. It took me several days of practice to get used to it though, so it's perfectly normal to be struggling with this in the beginning! :)

if you can't reach the fifth fret you can bar the second fret then put your pinkie on the fifth it's easier but slightly off

The end part is really simple--just listen carefully to figure out the melody and pluck single notes all along the 4th string. I understand your struggle :( I was the exact same way the first time I came up with the arrangement. But believe me when I say that practice is the only answer! I had to practice many days before the chord even remotely sounded the way it does in the music video. So don't give up!!

Adrian Simeon for the bridge, all I did was pluck the melody, which can be played entirely on the 4th string, nothing fancy. In my cover video, the melody was accompanied by chord strumming played on a second ukulele.
Adrian Simeon somebody in the comments posted a tab for the whole song, and I believe you can learn the bridge exactly as I played it there

@@DahEric23 When you play that part try moving your wrist a bit to help minimize the distance between your pinky and the fretboard. Also note that your other three fingers on the fretboard can "budge" a tiny bit to help your pinky reach the 5th fret.
