In her defense (and as someone who has suffered with bad acne my whole adult life), I wouldn't look in the "bad skin" comment too much. Bad skin is another way of saying problematic/misbehaving skin... which it is, let's face it.
The skin is acting up in a way that affects people negatively physically and mentally - therefore it is bad in that sense. People are beautiful despite their breakouts, but it's just a simple way to refer to it. I take no offense to this comment.

My own acne problems disappeared within a year of leaving school, but that was a miserable time in itself because kids as we know can be (and were) very cruel. I geniunely feel sorry for people that suffer from it in adulthood though.

Isotretinoin saved my skin and my confidence in my early 20s! I tried everything and I was lucky to have a good dermatologist that helped me on this journey, way before all the information was available like it is today on the internet. I started getting acne at age 11. I’m 31 now and still get spots. I started using Epiduo gel from the doctors about 3 years ago. It has helped a lot. I don’t have big breakouts anymore. It’s a very strong cream though so it does dry your skin out, and if you use too much it will burn your skin and leave you red and peeling. So I’m careful to only use it when necessary. All those years I never went to the doctors assuming it would just go away eventually. My mum never took me as a teenager either. It massively affected how I am now as an adult. I am very very introverted. My teen years I had friends. But I avoided at all costs talking to anybody new because I didn’t want anybody to look directly at me. Now, although I’ve got better over the years, I’m quite shy and not the chattiest in the room. So I believe it had a massive effect on the way I am today. Those important years developing my personality were hindered by me just wanting the ground to swallow me up.

The thing that worked for me was the supplement DIM. I had terrible cystic acne all along my jawline and neck for a good year or more. Big painful cysts that just couldn't be drained or ever let up. I started taking DIM, a cheap supplement like $15/month, i ordered on Amazon. I started taking it and within ONE week, the acne started to improve. With ONE MONTH, the acne was almost completely healed and it hasn't come back for the past two years. I still take the same 400mg/day i started with. Wait actually i couldn't get the same brand a few months ago so i switched and got a 300mg/day brand and it's still been working. It may not work for everyone but I've read many success stories and my own experience being a reason to at least try. Bless this gal for sharing her journey and persevering. It's is a tough lot to be handed.

I was on/off tretinoin in my 30s bc I had 2 pregnancies and you have to be off it during those times. I started to get acne again in my 40s even with tretinoin and it was definitely due to perimenopause. I paid for 3 rounds of the Accure laser (about $5k total) which targets subaceous glands. There was purging after each round but it helped so much. If I get a pimple, it is so small and it’s gone if I put salicylic acid on it. Accure laser was a game changer.

I went on roaccutane, for only 2 months. It did work, my hair didnt get greasy it was bliss! But then i got joint pain (potential side effect) and got taken off it. My acne slowly came back, but im not willing to try roaccutane again.

I went on three trials of roaccutance before my acne was finally gone. It was a horrendous time of my life however I feel so grateful that I was able to access NHS treatment considering how difficult it is to get an appointment now. We need more dermatologists working for the NHS - the issue is so many of them go private because it’s more money for them.

I was terrified of using isotretinoin (roaccutane) so avoided it.
As a male, hormones were not an option, doctors prescribed me every topical under the sun along with antibiotics which really damaged my gut microbiome.
In the end the only thing that resolved it was roaccutane, i did a 12 month course, 20mg daily. I had my last pill in June and havent had a pimple or cyst since. Unfortunately my folliculitis has returned, ill have to go back to the dermatologist but im thankful my face is clear!
