Between this and "March of the Titians", I'm actually tempted to say that this was the first AT4W retrospective Lewis ever did. True, it's not as long or as comprehensive as later videos, but it does detail a character or in this case "characters" history up to the year when the video came out. Plus, I do view it as a nice companion piece to the "Blue Skying" retrospective he did back in 2016. Kind of surprised that this wasn't included in the compilation.
I love how they treated Ted in Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon. He was a great friend of Batman who died a hero by sacrificing himself to prevent his uncle from using the Scarab to control the world. I summarized a lot, so if you want more, check out the episode “Fall of the Blue Beatle!”
Also Young Justice was cancelled far too soon, just like this comic series. Coincidence? Honestly though, the show was cancelled because of bad toy sales. BOO!!!
+james callanan The company that made Young Justice seems to be under the weird impression that cartoon shows' only purpose is to sell toys. Damn shame, really.
+Tim Mitton That's because the toy companies help subsidize the money for the animation. Young Justice had very high quality animation, which wasn't cheap. And Cartoon Network likely doesn't have the budget to support the series all by itself, unlike its competitors. That's why all of CN's series recently use very simplified character designs that are easy to animate and they've more or less stopped making action cartoons (aside from the upcoming Ben 10 reboot).
The first I'd ever heard of this character was on the animated Batman series, "Brave and the Bold" a few years ago. He quickly became my favourite character on that show, aside from Batman of course, so it's nice to know I wasn't the only guy who liked him.
same here I mean I like the more serious Jaime from Young Justice but BaB Blue is just so likeable plus he's voiced by Terry McGuines which only ups the awesome
I was introduced to Jaime and the Blue Beetle through the show Young Justice, which had the character based on the New 52 version. Since reading both sources, I'm pretty torn on which is better. But I know for a fact that the 3rd incarnation of the Blue Beetle is the only superhero comic series that has compelled me to buy the entire set instead of simply borrowing and is still to this day my favorite superhero. Great choice, Linkara!
i one hundred percent agree. End Game was one of my all-time favorite story lines and each read makes it better and better. Blue Beetle is my all-time favorite character btw, so this was awesome for me to watch.
And now thanks to Injustice 2, a whole new generation gets to see Jaime Reyes, all around good guy superhero. I'm glad he was portrayed how he is in that game!
+Honored Cur Older than that if Black Adam is anything to go by. And it doesn't really make sense since the ancient Egyptians saw their deities as benevolent (Set and Apophis being the notable exceptions). If comic writers want evil deities, they could go with the fickle Sumerian pantheon.
This was my introduction to him. Shame what happened to him. I love underrated, more obscure characters, especially ore humanistic, positive creative ones like Blue Beetle.
***** well to be fair jaime is basically ted from the Charlton Era as I like to call it. But yes ted has always been one of the most hopeful, fun, and downright great superheroes ever.
This was the first appearance of 90s Kid. I never really talked about him before so until a storyline on him (and only him) is ever released, I might as well give my opinion now. I have to admit, when I first saw him, I was practically annoyed. He was, at best a stereotype of the 90s and it almost felt like Linkara was trying to say, "Everything about the 90s sucks! Just look at how stupid comic fans were back then!". However, as time went on, Lewis did try to give him depth and make him more, well...tolerable. Way to improve yourself man.
AT4W Marathon Day 2.5: Went through my brother's comic collection, which was full of books! I was pleasantly surprised at the size! Until I realized that all the comics he had collected were from the Spiderman CLONE SAGA and Death of Superman arcs. Yaaaaay
Blue Beetle was the comic that made me interested in comics, and the second blue beetle was the comic that encouraged me to be a better person, as the first comic of it I read was a comic about blue beetle just going around getting information from people he was nice to. Even though people looked down on him, and saw that his helping was useless, it solved the problem and made him a better hero. It's nice to see exactly how much attention Linkara gives to the franchise.
Every time Ditko’s beliefs are brought up I find them to be radically different from Ayn Rand’s actual bullshit about selflessness being stupid and the highest moral pursuit being self-service.
I was introdued to Jaime through Brave and the Bold and institly liked him and I recently got his first collected edition Shellshocked and honestly Linkara is right he is freaking awesome
I really loved Blue Beetle, the end of the Reach story is one of my favorite ever, but I'll be honest I probably never would have given it a shot if Keith Giffen's name hadn't been on the cover. I don't even know how involved he was, but I was incredibly pissed about the death of Ted Kord, and the writer that made me love that Blue Beetle in the first place getting on board with the new Blue Beetle was enough to get me to at least give it a chance. The fantastic comic in it's own right was enough to keep me hooked.
Wait, so the first Blue Beetle got his powers from an Ancient Egyptian relic, the second got powers through science, and the third through alien technology? Does this mean the next Blue Beetle will gain his powers through genetic mutation?
As someone who has had major difficulties getting my hands on sequential comic books, and therefore haven’t had much interest in picking up comics unless I can get sequential issues I didn’t know about blue beetle until the current one showed up on tv. And then I fell in love with his character. And as a casual fan I can only speculate that maybe he just didn’t get enough publicity. I mean if he’d been in the teen titans cartoon I’m fairly certain his comics might have been more popular
You know, I wonder how 90s Kid would react to My Crystal Pony Tales on the Genesis. It could possibly break him XD And yep, back then it was just One More Day that was the thing insulted by Lewis...ah, simpler times. Thanks for uploading these and I hope you continue doing it!
I managed to get my hands on Jaime Reyes thanks to the library. Loved the series. It was fun, exciting, and even tense during the Reach Storyline. It's the main reason why I can't read the Nu52!Blue Beetle. It was too depressing and basically like the other books of people lamenting their powers.
Fox: my gosh it's the same story line as the young justice and now both are cancelled. Blue beetle is freaking epic, here was one of my faves in brave and bold tv series and young justice. Hope he pops up in others books soon
3:06-03:27 Then Linkara got kidnapped by Vyce (doing God knows what to him), Harvey did a decent episode, 90's Kid did an episode I could barely make it all the way through and Liz took over and did another okay review
Cancellation is a bad habit on DC's part. Young Justice, the Green Lantern tv series, and a boat load of awesome comic storylines. I'm starting to think they need their heads examined.
at least Jamie would end up being used to great effect in the animated material (Teen Titans animated movies, Young Justice, Batman: Brave & The Bold) so he's probably the most famous Blue Beetle now
I was first introduced to blue beatle in that campy brave and the bold show but he was pretty cool in it and plus will friedle voiced him who was the voice for batman beyond which is one of the best shows ever made
+SusanMcboot :: Yeah he was a fairly prominent character in the Young Justice animated show in its second season until.... it was cancelled. Beetle cant really catch a break, I was a huge fan of the show and loved the Blue Beetle/Reach storyline.
Linkara retire with so much young blood still left no never, also the first appearance of one of my favourite reoccurring characters 90s kid, duuude. Yes the incorrect spelling is on purpose.
I have somehow managed to collect all issues of Blue Beetle. The new series was okay, but could not compare to the original, plus it was cancelled after the first two volumes. I first heard of Blue Beetle from Batman: Brave and the Bold. God, I loved that show.
Khaji Da was the same in the previous book. But Jaime always managed to contain it. And that's what made him appealing, having to fight against a doomsday weapon. Heroes keeping secrets and doing everything alone is old. And Jaime having friends and family help was a breath of fresh air. He isn't a character who needs to be dark or edgy to work. And that's where they messed up.
Sorry, I guess my memory of the scarab IMPALING OR SMACKING JAIME'S BEST FRIENDS messed with my assessment a bit. It was also a lame way of shoving the Scarlet Scarab into the story. Funny that they went the grimdark route for a character (SS that is) who seems to have originated from a rather goofy children's show. But no, Jaime needs unnecessary sources of ANGST for his life. I apologize, my hatred for the new 52 took over a bit.
For a show that's supposed to be about the Golden and Silver Age incarnations of characters, why does the Jaime Reyes incarnation of the Blue Beetle appear over the other two?
The blue beetle comic started after Young Justice, I didn't read it simply because it made bluepulse non-cannon, and I hate it when something is non-cannon
Real archaeology involves a lot more trash. Old Coke bottles, sewer pipes, spoons, glass fragments, etc. Also, Indiana Jones and the ten thousand bone fragments that had to be sorted before August.
I know this might sound weird, but I'm really considering buying Blue Beetle's run with Rebirth in September (technically August) as my first comic book ... Yes, first comic book after 20 years of living.
lol, that's actually what I watched first before this video. I just decided to comment after watching this :P Blue Skying was an amazing look at the character by the way, FANTASTIC job! :)
I realize that this is about 6 years late of a comment, but have you (Linkara) ever watched the Young Justice cartoon? Season 2 incorporates the blue beetle (Jaime Reyes version) and the entire reach storyline - plus it brings back Apache Chief, El Dorado, and Static Shock without feeling way too forced minority quota mode. Apache Chief's powers are pretty fucking cool too, and I'd love to see a team comic of all of them - plus that japanese girl I forget her name.
You know? As much as Garth Ennis' The Boys was mean spirited, he also had a dim view on "dark and edgy" heroes along with sexism (I mean they even made fun of comic company trying to get a light hearted heroine to have "rape" as a backstory). And sex-crazed hero was actually one of the few genuine hero, who died saving a woman and her baby (though his dying dream was to mount a meteor to save the world). So care to discuss Nova, except Richard Rider was going to be awesome and replaced by a annoying kid made by Jeph Loeb, which ironically an improvement over his previous "works"?
+Doctora Ciel It's kind of sad to say, but you're right. I mean, I'm a DC guy who buys Omega Men, Grayson, Starfire, and a few other good, fun, non-Batman titles, but I'm way in the minority, if you look at Diamond's official sales numbers. So aggravating.
But, if the Blue Beetle's dead (or... at least was?), doesn't that mean that folks can't f**k up his story any more, sort of like what happened to Batgirl? I mean... there's always the potential for a resurrection, but hmn... Also... I went to college, flunked out, joined the army, flunked outta that, got a solid job... pay my bills, got a clean criminal record... I'm still not ready for the real world xD
I will never buy or bother reading any of the 3rd Blue Beetle's books. Why won't people like me "get over it" and give the new guy a chance? Let me try an analogy: Imagine that you are a fan of The Incredible Hulk. Now imagine that marvel decides to kill off the Hulk. Then they quickly come up with a 'new Hulk'; a guy who finds a magical girdle which upon some runic chanting transforms the new guy into a 15' tall gelatinous bruiser. Now the 'New Hulk' may somehow be a good book...well scripted and drawn etc. but Hulk fans will say "WTF?! Why didn't they just call this new character something else?". There is simply no need or good reason to replace Ted Kord and the actual Blue Beetle with this new character. And yes, I know how Ditko replaced Garret with Kord and drastically reinvented the character keeping the same name but the difference is that Ditko's revision was an _improvement_ over the Dan Garret original concept in all ways. It is not as if DC took a failing and silly character (ala the original Blue Beetle) and replaced him with an improved revision.
This is probably a dumb question, but, as an avid comic book reader, I don't really understand how knowing the hero's true identity would offer more protection. I thought that it was, if they got kidnapped, they'd at least know why, but that doesn't really mean more safety, even if that makes them more prepared.
In terms of immediate family/friends, they'd be able to offer alibis to anyone who might suspect they were the hero in question, providing more protection from those who don't have their best interest at heart. They're also an additional hand that can be called upon should any number of circumstances arise that they need help with.
Many thought he was funny. Even Doomsday must have smiled during his battle with the justice league c squad Beatle was a member of. For those who haven't seen it. Because Doomsday was new and was created specifically to kill Superman. They had to make that believable fast. They did that by having him humiliate the almost humorously week justice league.
Between this and "March of the Titians", I'm actually tempted to say that this was the first AT4W retrospective Lewis ever did. 16 years later and OMD still hasn't been undone. Really makes me question my faith in humanity.
Wow, I just realised that this Blue Beetle series was the basis for Young Justice: Invasion.
Also Young Justice was cancelled far too soon, just like this comic series. Coincidence?

+EHEROAndrew Here's hoping Netflix goes through with bringing it back.
+james callanan if they had made better toys instead of that cheap junk that didn't even have opposable elbows I would have bought them
The first I'd ever heard of this character was on the animated Batman series, "Brave and the Bold" a few years ago.
He quickly became my favourite character on that show, aside from Batman of course, so it's nice to know I wasn't the only guy who liked him.
I realized that a good chunk of the plot from the show Young Justice was apparently inspired by the latter Blue Beetle comics.
same here I mean I like the more serious Jaime from Young Justice but BaB Blue is just so likeable plus he's voiced by Terry McGuines which only ups the awesome
Jay Likewise.
You guys liked him better than Aquaman? OUTRAGEOUS!
Trevin Taylor Right, because whales are the absolute gods of Earth
Now I have a mental image of an elderly Linkara passing his outfit and gear to a Neokara.
I think Linkara should pass the torch Doctor Who style
I think Mark should take up the mantle 😊
90s Kid's first appearance! Yay!
And thus 90's Kid was born! XD

2017: ... sooo, when is that thing happening then?
Thank god for the MCU, huh?

90s Kid's first appearance
And AT4W was never the same again.
Sewing machine! 👍
@@jtallen6406 thats 2099's kid
And now thanks to Injustice 2, a whole new generation gets to see Jaime Reyes, all around good guy superhero. I'm glad he was portrayed how he is in that game!
so this is where the "Ancient Egypt is Evil" joke originates from?
+Honored Cur Older than that if Black Adam is anything to go by. And it doesn't really make sense since the ancient Egyptians saw their deities as benevolent (Set and Apophis being the notable exceptions). If comic writers want evil deities, they could go with the fickle Sumerian pantheon.
Ryan Ramage even those deities had their moments, but I was specifically asking about Linkara's joke.
Oh look, Evelyn's first appearance. You wouldn't guess he's that smart based on his appearance here, but he's actually really smart
This was my introduction to him. Shame what happened to him. I love underrated, more obscure characters, especially ore humanistic, positive creative ones like Blue Beetle.
ditto there
yeah, just watch him and batman in brave and the bold series, and im talking about ted kord beetle not Hamie

So the Blue Beetle book got canceled after the Reach story arc just like Young Justice. I miss Young Justice :(
This is truly the work of ANCIENT EGYPT(Imperial March)
Happy pills are happy indeed.
AT4W Marathon Day 2.5:

DUUUUUUUUUUUDE ten years of 90s kid
I would personally give Blue Beetle another shot. It would help break up the abundance of Batman and Harley Quinn titles.
+Gold Reaper DC does seem to be trying to push him at least and that shows that they want Blue Beetle to be a thing again
I actually picked up Blue Beetle when I was a teenager. I *adored* it
Wait, so the first Blue Beetle got his powers from an Ancient Egyptian relic, the second got powers through science, and the third through alien technology? Does this mean the next Blue Beetle will gain his powers through genetic mutation?
second blue beetlr did not have powers but you may know it already
As someone who has had major difficulties getting my hands on sequential comic books, and therefore haven’t had much interest in picking up comics unless I can get sequential issues I didn’t know about blue beetle until the current one showed up on tv. Well done Libraries. You do your nation proud! (dramatically salutes under the american flag while crying in pride to "Star-Spangled Banner")
I read the first volume of the New 52 series and I thought it was amazing.
Fox: my gosh it's the same story line as the young justice and now both are cancelled. Blue beetle is freaking epic, here was one of my faves in brave and bold tv series and young justice. Hope he pops up in others books soon
You should do this more! At least once in a couple of months. Talk about good comics.
I'd totally take over being Linkara if Lewis ever stepped down.
I'm serious. You think I'm kidding but I'm not!
You'll have to wrestle that hat out of my cold dead hands! I will be the second Linkara!... Or if not... The Reverse-Linkara! Mwa hahahahaaaa!
Not gonna lie, whenever Jaime’s Blue Beetle pops up in other DC media, he’s awesome. This is especially true in Young Justice.
3:06-03:27
Then Linkara got kidnapped by Vyce (doing God knows what to him), Harvey did a decent episode, 90's Kid did an episode I could barely make it all the way through and Liz took over and did another okay review
The Blue Beetle, like Spider-Man, appeared on The Electric Company.
Awesome! But there were several previous volumes just during Charlton years alone.
Jaime was actually the first blue beetle I ever read. So, I actually bought every issue of blue beetle until it was canceled. Tis was a sad day
he comes back
Cancellation is a bad habit on DC's part. Young Justice, the Green Lantern tv series, and a boat load of awesome comic storylines. I'm starting to think they need their heads examined.
at least Jamie would end up being used to great effect in the animated material (Teen Titans animated movies, Young Justice, Batman: Brave & The Bold) so he's probably the most famous Blue Beetle now
He was such a bad ass when he died... that sounded horrible, but he was.
Yay for retroactive titlecard.
I was first introduced to blue beatle in that campy brave and the bold show but he was pretty cool in it and plus will friedle voiced him who was the voice for batman beyond which is one of the best shows ever made
Ya, I first discovered the character on The Brave and The Bold too. I remember the episodes being good.
Yeah he was probably the only thing about that show that was cool
I think I may look for the Blue Beetle books now.
Blue beetle is very very very awesome
I saw this guy in some of the DC television shows, he's really cool.
+SusanMcboot :: Yeah he was a fairly prominent character in the Young Justice animated show in its second season until.... it was cancelled. Beetle cant really catch a break, I was a huge fan of the show and loved the Blue Beetle/Reach storyline.
Yeah, he was in Batman: The Brave and the Bold too, that's where I saw him! They had the new Blue Beetle and the classic one in the show
I first heard of the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle thanks to the animated series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
I bought a used copy of Superman #75 (amazingly with EVERYTHING still in tact, despite the original poly bag being opened) for $10. lol
nice find
Linkara retire with so much young blood still left no never, also the first appearance of one of my favourite reoccurring characters 90s kid, duuude. Yes the incorrect spelling is on purpose.
I read Blue Beetle 3 in middle school. The Young Justice season 2 use a lot of elements from the comic.
Remember when he did next get his own book and it was the New 52? Good times.
ANCIENT EYGPT!!!! DX
(Insert "The Imperial March" by John Williams here)
Wasn't the old Blue Beetle also the inspiration for Nite Owl in Watchmen?
Eamonn Deane Pretty sure Silk Spectre is Phantom Lady by way of Nightshade.
I have somehow managed to collect all issues of Blue Beetle. The new series was okay, but could not compare to the original, plus it was cancelled after the first two volumes. I first heard of Blue Beetle from Batman: Brave and the Bold. God, I loved that show.
Having started reading the Jaime Reyes incarnarion, I have to say that it is a great comic. The new 52 definitely tried to be unnecessarily edgy.
Jaime can't trust his loved ones and the scarab is an aggressive, murderous asshole. Sounds like a good fit for the new 52 book to me.
The first few issues almost lost me, but damn the rest is pretty damn good
The blue beetle comic started after Young Justice, I didn't read it simply because it made bluepulse non-cannon, and I hate it when something is non-cannon
Real archaeology involves a lot more trash. Old Coke bottles, sewer pipes, spoons, glass fragments, etc.

Wait a minute. Linkara talking about one of my favorite dc characters created one of my favorite Linkara characters? What is this madness???
Ancient Egypt !!!
I think I cried when i found out they canceled the comics.
i love the blue Beatle as well also Dr.mid night
Which one?
The 2nd one the,one that got,shot
Tsiki Condor oh I didn't expect you to say that, nowadays I barely expect anyone to say that they really like ted.
Oh cool I am the lucky one :P
Tsiki Condor may I ask how old are you? It's for a study I'm doing about the amount of people that like blue beetle
So Dan and Jamie (not sure if I spelled that right) both had the Alien Scareb, but Tedd didn’t. I always assumed they all used it.
9 years ago the groundworks for todays movie were set
I know this might sound weird, but I'm really considering buying Blue Beetle's run with Rebirth in September (technically August) as my first comic book ... Yes, first comic book after 20 years of living.
I actually am jumping into blue beetle during rebirth, 100% because of linkara. I would have never thought about buying it because of the silly name.
I honestly never heard of the character until recently. Linkara peaked my interest however :)
If you head over to my site, last March I did a MUCH more comprehensive look at the character's entire history. =)
lol, that's actually what I watched first before this video. I just decided to comment after watching this :P
Blue Skying was an amazing look at the character by the way, FANTASTIC job! :)
He's Linkara, he remembers that so I don't have to!
You can't blame me for it's cancelation, you can barely find comics in Bulgaria
90's Kid!
when I saw paco hitting that alien with a stick, just the moment of bad ass was equal to that of saints row character johnny gat
Endgame is now $49.99 on Amazon, which is the only place I can seem to find it. $13-$15 for the other volumes. D:
1:40-2:12 That explains the joke.
RIP Steve Ditko
Have you picked a successor to the mantal of Linkara?
I realize that this is about 6 years late of a comment, but have you (Linkara) ever watched the Young Justice cartoon? the original costume of the Blue Beetle looks like the Phantom.

2:48 - evil people don't know anyone? That seems... unlikely...
It’s 2019 and he still doesn’t have his own damn series
14:13 thank you hindsight ya I’m just glad that didn’t happen
I feel like The Reach were based on Alex Jones
ANCIENT EGYPT!
blue beetle could bee the spiderman from dc, but dc people don't buy comics if don't had batman on the title.
10:46 That’s definitely a callback to Tedd right?
Oof. The failure of the Blue Bettle movie must hurt extra for a long-time fan like you.
You know watching linkara and nostalgia critic made me realize how many films and comics would be better if they were writing and directing them

Well if two people didn't get brutality maimed, how would we know the villain was fo' serious, yo?
(sarcasm)
man linkara was a lot crazier in the old days wasn't he?
But, if the Blue Beetle's dead (or... at least was?), doesn't that mean that folks can't f**k up his story any more, sort of like what happened to Batgirl?
I mean... there's always the potential for a resurrection, but hmn...
Also... I went to college, flunked out, joined the army, flunked outta that, got a solid job... pay my bills, got a clean criminal record... I'm still not ready for the real world xD
Spiderman sins past taught me that loveable characters that died in comics can be ruined.
Was the first appearance of 90s kid?
Yep!
@@AT4W rad I've been wondering where it was. Now I know
spoony became linkara for a bit...
I will never buy or bother reading any of the 3rd Blue Beetle's books. Why won't people like me "get over it" and give the new guy a chance? Let me try an analogy:
Imagine that you are a fan of The Incredible Hulk.
"Enter Steve Ditko"
gladly
God, you were so skinny and young
