    5:30 "When it calls Joan Mason 'Girl Reporter' that makes it sound to me like she reports on nothing but girls."
    Which isn't true, of course. In fact, she's completely obsessed with Big Dix.
    Ahem.

    His costume is just a colour-shifted Phantom, right down to the sort of widow's peak hood.

    • @Bolsonaro_em_Haia
      @Bolsonaro_em_Haia 5 лет назад +25

      The resemblance is strong, but there are small differences, at least sometimes.
      Phantom's costume resembles an unitard, is never scaled, has diagonal stripes on its briefs, very noticeable dark boots, never includes goggles, and stopped including gloves fairly early on.
      Golden Age Blue Beetle is very often scaled, probably to suggest chainmail. It also uses includes gloves with fairly flared cuffs and goggles instead of the domino mask. A tunic of varying length is sometimes present as well.

    • @Bolsonaro_em_Haia
      @Bolsonaro_em_Haia 5 лет назад +4

      Also, Phantom's eye irises are hardly ever visible inside his domino mask (and he always has one), and he is always with a pair of gun holsters on his belt.

    Always enjoy your shows. Ted Kord was an archeology student? Fascinated that BB originated in a blue suit and beetle tie. I think Kirby drew his syndicated newspaper strip, and he had a radio show. A lot of hype for a not-very-popular, sketchy-origin character. Also, kids often double up on slides, adults too.

      It's really more about politics and religion. In the early 20th century, the Democrats were the party of reactionary politics, racism, and religious intolerance. Then in the mid-century the Republicans made a devil's deal with christian zealots, hitching their wagon to the horses of the Southern Baptists and prosperity doctrine, and things flipped, with the Republicans becoming the party of bigotry, classism, and Manifest Destiny.
      It's no coincidence that you saw a simultaneous backlash against comics, unions, collectivism, minority civil rights, and anything which smacked of too much fun to a fundamentalist christer. As the horror comics industry was being driven into nonexistence by this, the comics industry saw the supposed "wholesomeness" of Archie as a better risk than capes and spandex. You saw other comics companies also abandoning their riskier stuff, like lurid detective stories and war stories, in favour of teen romance and "funnies."

    During the '50s, guys with names shortened to Dix from Dixon were common - but not with an ascribed size. Which leads us to see that the producers of this BB episode thought their sneaky joke was one the most hilarious of all time, much like the classic "boner" routine used in a certain episode of Batman comics. Why they did several (non-hilarious) "backwards reading" balloons is a mystery, though. (And easily fixed today via a few flops and cut-and-pastes from any photo program.)

    I like how out of costume Dan Garrett keeps bragging about himself and saying the Blue Beetle could do something better.

    Love the hotel rooms changing wallpaper colours!
    @14:46 The wall changes colour each panel from blue, to yellow and red.
    The carpet changes colour too!
    Not noticed this before, is it something that happens in golden age comics?
    Also, great idea Big Dix. Have a button at the top of the stairs that someone could tread on to make the stairs into a slide.

    He looks exactly the same as the Phantom. Hadn’t seen the blue beetle drawn from the golden age previously.
