I was in the military for 35 years. One thing about career Airmen, Soldiers, Marines, Sailors - we are not out for glory or a paycheck. We are there because someone has to be and we feel it is important enough to do it. When I first listened to this song, I shed a tear and asked myself, did I do enough? I fought in the Infantry in Vietnam, and it's wonderful to get Arlo's respect. People who weren't there simply don't understand how and why we ended up there, and what we felt when we (thankfully) got home. We kept it to ourselves, but we no longer do. Oh well, it's time for me to stop now.

Kid across from the street got killed over there and my brothers best friend came home with a plate in his head.y brother humped a M60 a year in hell ( the bush ) and me be the only draftee had a cushy job and never consider myself a vet. My brother never spoke of his time in Nam. Went I came home thru my local airport they had bald headed Harri Chritna's protesting the war. Should have spit on scum bags. Thanks for nice vid. I still can only go downtown to the very nice Viet Nam memorial at sunrise due to still brings tears to my old eyes reading names of two guys from the old neighborhood.

My dad was in the Navy in WW2 my Uncle Jake was in the Battle of the Bulge My nephew was a Marine. He passed at 43 of a heart attacked. He served in Desert Storm.

Things that you or I consider "mistakes" can be seen as successes to people with a different end result in mind than what we would want to achieve. It is up to "We the people" to learn from the mistakes our government makes and to correct them. In the U.S.A., our founders gave us the tools to do that. We just have to educate ourselves enough about what those tools are, how they work, and ways our government tries to defeat them (and us), and not expect someone else to solve our problems without having to work towards solutions ourselves. None of us have to solve all of the problems alone, but if enough of us do at least whatever little part we can then that should be enough. Otherwise, the liberty our founders gave us will be gone. Dear Sir. This song touches every fiber of my being. I served in the USAF from 69 to 73. Joined when I was 17 and three days after graduation I was in basic training. My life was easy, four years in Europe. I served with many who had served in Viet Nam. They were changed men and women. After military duty I worked for a major US airline. Your song comes to mind everything a Veteran came home. Many times they arrived in a flag draped coffin and their families greeted them ramp side. Sometimes Honor Guards but more often not. I would meet the Military Escort and escort them to the ramp area. I cried like a baby everything. Those who weren't KIA walk our streets with permanent disabilities or PTSD. Your song is a constant GOOD reminder of SOME WHO GAVE SOME AND SOME WHO GAVE ALL. Thank you for your insight into life.

48 years later and I wish I could forgive the American people. I want to. I love my country. That is why I fought for it. I never needed parades or monuments. I didn't even need "thank you" s. But how I wanted to be told "Welcome home. We're glad you made it". My family was glad to see me, but it was almost as if I had been away at camp somewhere or simply working in another country for awhile instead of a place where you classified your friends by those who lived and those who didn't. I turned 19 there. My mom and dad wrote to me, but I never received a single letter from my older brother who didn't have to go. I asked him why and he said job, family, etc. I said "Yeah, it must have been hell back here." We didn't speak for years. The American people, the ones who didn't hate us outright, treated us like stray dogs they didn't know what to do with. They finally built us a monument and said "Here you are. We made this for you. See what fine folks we are". But they didn't build it for us, they built it for themselves so they could tell each other what fine folks they were. It was almost like they were saying, "We forgive you" instead of "We are sorry for how we treated you". I guess it doesn't matter now. I went on to have a family, successful career, two well adjusted kids, and 4 fine grandkids. I don't mope around constantly feeling sorry for myself all the time, as it might seem from this post. But sometimes when I'm up alone late, as I am now, I look back. And I wish I could forgive the American people. Sgt. Moore 5th Marines 2/1. 13 months and 9 days in country. 69/70. I know this was six years ago but I enjoyed what you wrote. I was also there in 69 and 70 with 1/5 and 3/5 in that same area. Yes people were at best indifferent to us when we came home and I have had trouble with that also but God gave me two great sons and seven grandchildren that fill my life with joy. I really don’t have a point except God is good.

As the mother of two Veterans I want to say that the mistakes this country made back during Vietnam and the mistreatment of our returning Soldiers, are lessons learned. Never again will our returning service members be so mistreated and disrespected. I have stood with the Patriot Guard Riders as a Blue Star Mother & we've welcomed many a returning Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine back home. To our Vietnam Veterans, please know that your service to our nation is deeply appreciated by this mom. If no one has said it to you before, please let me say it to you now, "Welcome home and thank you."
As long as we send out our boys and girls to cure the ills of the world, they must be MEN... adults, who are able to accept the criticism and the praise.
Unfortunately, no lessons were learned. Idiots were disrespectful upon return home but the greatest disrespect is shown by our government. Soldiers are just pawns in their game. Expendable when needed but neglected when they need help. PTSD, traumatic brain injury, depression, suicide etc.. are all overlooked and treated as weakness and not injury. Old Uncle Sam has shown many of his fine nieces and nephews great disrespect.
The first time i heard this song was in 2000 at a festival in Ohio, I was 25 and the son of a viet nam era vet, about a year later 9/11 happened and in 03 I joined the Army. Long story short, I served a tour in Iraq and when I came home, well, lets just say its a long and lonely road, not to many songs really capture that feeling like this one, Thank You Mr. Arlo Guthrie, even though you wrote this about a russian soldier, it means more than you know to this American Soldier.
Very nice song. I'm a 9 year Gulf War vet and this song fits in todays world just as it did in some of the past wars. Congress should be the first to send their kids to war before they decide to sent the poor and working class children, this will get them to think twice. Our military is great but the people who send them to war for oil and greed should be ashamed of themselves. Cheney was quick to send them but he avoided the war in his day.
I am a 35 year vet, I never thought I was dying for anyone, I was doing my job. As do the police, the EMTs, the Walmart cashier, the gas station attendent, the mailman, the garbage collector, the office worker and others, we all do 'our' job. Some experience danger in it, some bordom, but people do what they can to make a living. If everyone treated other with respect, this would be a great place. But, also the soldiers who went to Vietnam were drafted and had to go, not like today's service people who are all volunteer. So I didn't understand people berating, denigrating, name calling, and spitting on the returning soldiers. They didn't have a choice, unless you became a draft dodger and fled to Canada or Mexico.
@@C.M.30337Stop repeating the propaganda, they were mostly regular army , marines and volunteers about a third were concripts and only one in Ten in main force areas where the most dangerous fighting occurred often full scale divisional battles with the NVA. Its amazing how if you repeat something often enough it becomes true the myths have been around so long now people are programmed to say this stuff by rote, Vietnam by the way had a lower draft evasion rate than the civil war ww1 and Korea and was about the same as ww2 there was no epidemic of draft evasion and most were serving or those who evaded the draft were avoiding service with US forces in NATO west Germany where the majority of us forces were stationed and the majority of draftees served. Im sure there is a whole load of disinformation already about Afghanistan
@@C.M.30337 I wasn't referring to Individual experiences I was talking about peer historians and Veterans challenging the pop culture myths and downright distortions of the era that have carried on to today, there was no mass conscription at this time so the chances of being drafted were less than in other conflicts involving National service. There was of course limited but extensive conscription and milatary registration to create a pool of potential reservists in the event of a NATO vs Warsaw pact conflict, those concripts were used to flesh out the regular army during the cold war and hot war in Korea and S.E.A the difference being the regular army in 1950 just as it had been in 1942 and 1917 was far smaller than in 1965 therefore requiring a much larger reliance on the draft in those earlier conflicts, the ratio of regular army to draftees was much larger during the Vietnam era as the US was on a full cold war footing, there was nevertheless a huge number of young men drafted over a longer period but the majority served in postings across the world mainly NATO W Germany but also south Korea phillipines Okinawa Japan canal zone alaska stateside in non combat postings. As draftees these young men also served in S.E.A but were not the majority over the period, their experience certainly could be just as harrowing as it was for the R.A and USMC because some served in the main force battle, the period is seen as being transitional toward an all volunteer force. There is the atypical and otherwise but there are received opinions which are just wrong the so called "unjust" war the myth of the Norths monopoly on nationalist identity the myth of unilateral action which was SEATO and multilateral the myth of revolution which was intra state aggression the list is almost endless.

Do not know of one who voluntarily went during the Vietnam War.
My grandparents saw his dad. My parents saw them both. And I got to see Arlo in concert a few years ago. And even more in this day and age his music matters. I never understood alot of why my parents liked him until I heard him for myself. This song makes for a heady and important statement. I have countless friends serving in the forces today & when they come home few really want to hear or understand them. So there's most def some props for Arlo for still speaking/singing his mind!

To all who served and are serving - just because some people are against the war doesn't mean that they don't honor those that served or are serving. I was too young for Nam I had friends who served and their big brothers. I had buddies in the 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars. Not all made it home, others came back suffering from the stress of combat. I really appreciate this song about those that served in combat. Every time a unit came home I was there to greet them.

My father joined the service in world War two at 17. He was sent to Okayama in 44 and 45 , he saw more than young man should see at that age or any age. After the war he became a NYC firefighter, I followed in his footsteps. God bless you veterans and thank you!

I was welcomed back to America 25 years later by my son's friend's dad, a Hmong. He was the first person to thank me for my service, and the first to welcome me home. What a great song. I was in Viet Nam and I still ache for all the guys - and Vietnamese - and all others who were lost over there. That war was a lie like all the rest, started by a bunch of lunatics who wanted to test out and sell all the weapons they had developed. I ache for the people who get involved in these lying wars, who lose their family members and those who lose their homes, and all they have. Some day, when humanity grows up, we won't see people as strangers to kill. We will see them as our brothers and sisters and we will love them as we are supposed to do. Seen Arlo 3 times.... the 1st was when I was a student at Washington State University in 1979. Got to meet him, an I'll never forget!! I Got to tell him how much his father's music meant to me... an how much his music did too!! he was very nice. :) Arlo just keeps getting better, as this song tells us all that peace is more powerful then war!!! My cousing made it back he was a green beret; jumped out of planes. He never talked about it. He died homeless and of a drug overdose. Heroin and Cocaine -- once he came back he was never the same. My son signed up during the Iraqi war and he too came back broken. Now though we were able to get him help for PTSD and he was finally awarded disability.
Loved Woodie, Love Arlo and now the legacy just comntinues to go on! This song just pulls at your heart strings and is so emotional. I get lost in his music, and how caring ans sentimental it is, ot can leave you sad and in tears, it's so very thought provoking, and I think that these are the words he wants you to hear to bring that out of you!
What Arlo is singing about, is exactly why you will see many, many Vietnam Vets greeting these returning military members as they come through airports around this country. They do not want the same to happen to them as did happen to our generation of the 1960's-1970's of Vietnam Veterans.
We made the mistake of equating the war with the soldiers who fought in it--it was a needless, unpopular war, and people tended to blame the soldiers, when they should have blamed the politicians and the military. Soldiers do what they have been trained to do, or what they have to do, to survive. No blame, no shame. And thank you all for going, for returning to us.
The way that these songs come back around at the right times..the more I believe we will do the same. Life doesn't change as we've obviously not learned anything. Yet they come back full circle and we get a deeper way to understand...that's what I do.

What governments do learn is how to grow and become more powerful and corrupt. Things that you or I consider "mistakes" can be seen as successes to people with a different end result in mind than what we would want to achieve. It is up to "We the people" to learn from the mistakes our government makes and to correct them.
In the U.S.A., our founders gave us the tools to do that. We just have to educate ourselves enough about what those tools are, how they work, and ways our government tries to defeat them (and us), and not expect someone else to solve our problems without having to work towards solutions ourselves.
None of us have to solve all of the problems alone, but if enough of us do at least whatever little part we can then that should be enough. Otherwise, the liberty our founders gave us will be gone. ("A Republic, if you can keep it.")

I hate to break it to you, but youtube stopped displaying the count of "thumbs down" to everyone. Now they only give that information to the users who post the videos. I don't remember where they explained their reason for doing that, but you can probably find it with a bit of searching if you are interested -- unless they have decided to hide that, too. (Something silly about not wanting to hurt peoples feelings that made me gag.)
Dear Sir. This song touches every fiber of my being. I served in the USAF from 69 to 73. Joined when I was 17 and three days after graduation I was in basic training. My life was easy, four years in Europe. I served with many who had served in Viet Nam. They were changed men and women. After military duty I worked for a major US airline. Your song comes to mind everything a Veteran came home. Many times they arrived in a flag draped coffin and their families greeted them ramp side. Sometimes Honor Guards but more often not. I would meet the Military Escort and escort them to the ramp area. I cried like a baby everything. Those who weren't KIA walk our streets with permanent disabilities or PTSD. Your song is a constant GOOD reminder of SOME WHO GAVE SOME AND SOME WHO GAVE ALL. Thank you for your insight into life.

48 years later and I wish I could forgive the American people. I want to. I love my country. That is why I fought for it. I never needed parades or monuments. I didn't even need "thank you" s. But how I wanted to be told "Welcome home. We're glad you made it". My family was glad to see me, but it was almost as if I had been away at camp somewhere or simply working in another country for awhile instead of a place where you classified your friends by those who lived and those who didn't. I turned 19 there. My mom and dad wrote to me, but I never received a single letter from my older brother who didn't have to go. I asked him why and he said job, family, etc. I said "Yeah, it must have been hell back here." We didn't speak for years. The American people, the ones who didn't hate us outright, treated us like stray dogs they didn't know what to do with. They finally built us a monument and said "Here you are. We made this for you. See what fine folks we are". But they didn't build it for us, they built it for themselves so they could tell each other what fine folks they were. It was almost like they were saying, "We forgive you" instead of "We are sorry for how we treated you". I guess it doesn't matter now. I went on to have a family, successful career, two well adjusted kids, and 4 fine grandkids. I don't mope around constantly feeling sorry for myself all the time, as it might seem from this post. But sometimes when I'm up alone late, as I am now, I look back. And I wish I could forgive the American people.

I know this was six years ago but I enjoyed what you wrote. I was also there in 69 and 70 with 1/5 and 3/5 in that same area. Yes people were at best indifferent to us when we came home and I have had trouble with that also but God gave me two great sons and seven grandchildren that fill my life with joy. I really don’t have a point except God is good.

As the mother of two Veterans I want to say that the mistakes this country made back during Vietnam and the mistreatment of our returning Soldiers, are lessons learned. Never again will our returning service members be so mistreated and disrespected. I have stood with the Patriot Guard Riders as a Blue Star Mother & we've welcomed many a returning Soldier, Sailor, Airman and Marine back home.
To our Vietnam Veterans, please know that your service to our nation is deeply appreciated by this mom. If no one has said it to you before, please let me say it to you now, "Welcome home and thank you."
I am a Patriot Guard Rider. It's been my honor to stand in gratitude at many military funerals. It's the least I can offer.
As long as we send out our boys and girls to cure the ills of the world, they must be MEN... adults, who are able to accept the criticism and the praise.
Unfortunately, no lessons were learned. Idiots were disrespectful upon return home but the greatest disrespect is shown by our government. Soldiers are just pawns in their game. Expendable when needed but neglected when they need help. PTSD, traumatic brain injury, depression, suicide etc.. are all overlooked and treated as weakness and not injury. Old Uncle Sam has shown many of his fine nieces and nephews great disrespect.

The first time i heard this song was in 2000 at a festival in Ohio, I was 25 and the son of a viet nam era vet, about a year later 9/11 happened and in 03 I joined the Army. Long story short, I served a tour in Iraq and when I came home, well, lets just say its a long and lonely road, not to many songs really capture that feeling like this one, Thank You Mr. Arlo Guthrie, even though you wrote this about a russian soldier, it means more than you know to this American Soldier.

Very nice song. I'm a 9 year Gulf War vet and this song fits in todays world just as it did in some of the past wars.
Congress should be the first to send their kids to war before they decide to sent the poor and working class children, this will get them to think twice.
Our military is great but the people who send them to war for oil and greed should be ashamed of themselves.

I am a 35 year vet, I never thought I was dying for anyone, I was doing my job. As do the police, the EMTs, the Walmart cashier, the gas station attendent, the mailman, the garbage collector, the office worker and others, we all do 'our' job. Some experience danger in it, some bordom, but people do what they can to make a living. If everyone treated other with respect, this would be a great place. Thanks for the sone Arlo, loved your song 40 years ago, you are still going strong thru time.
But, also the soldiers who went to Vietnam were drafted and had to go, not like today's service people who are all volunteer. So I didn't understand people berating, denigrating, name calling, and spitting on the returning soldiers. They didn't have a choice, unless you became a draft dodger and fled to Canada or Mexico.
@@C.M.30337Stop repeating the propaganda, they were mostly regular army , marines and volunteers about a third were concripts and only one in Ten in main force areas where the most dangerous fighting occurred often full scale divisional battles with the NVA. Its amazing how if you repeat something often enough it becomes true the myths have been around so long now people are programmed to say this stuff by rote, Vietnam by the way had a lower draft evasion rate than the civil war ww1 and Korea and was about the same as ww2 there was no epidemic of draft evasion and most were serving or those who evaded the draft were avoiding service with US forces in NATO west Germany where the majority of us forces were stationed and the majority of draftees served. Im sure there is a whole load of disinformation already about Afghanistan

@@C.M.30337 I wasn't referring to Individual experiences I was talking about peer historians and Veterans challenging the pop culture myths and downright distortions of the era that have carried on to today, there was no mass conscription at this time so the chances of being drafted were less than in other conflicts involving National service. There was of course limited but extensive conscription and milatary registration to create a pool of potential reservists in the event of a NATO vs Warsaw pact conflict, those concripts were used to flesh out the regular army during the cold war and hot war in Korea and S.E.A the difference being the regular army in 1950 just as it had been in 1942 and 1917 was far smaller than in 1965 therefore requiring a much larger reliance on the draft in those earlier conflicts, the ratio of regular army to draftees was much larger during the Vietnam era as the US was on a full cold war footing, there was nevertheless a huge number of young men drafted over a longer period but the majority served in postings across the world mainly NATO W Germany but also south Korea phillipines Okinawa Japan canal zone alaska stateside in non combat postings. As draftees these young men also served in S.E.A but were not the majority over the period, their experience certainly could be just as harrowing as it was for the R.A and USMC because some served in the main force battle, the period is seen as being transitional toward an all volunteer force. There is the atypical and otherwise but there are received opinions which are just wrong the so called "unjust" war the myth of the Norths monopoly on nationalist identity the myth of unilateral action which was SEATO and multilateral the myth of revolution which was intra state aggression the list is almost endless.
@@stephennuttall5052 - I personally know thousands of people that were drafted and had to go to Vietnam, including my husband and many family members, and hundreds who fled to Canada to avoid going when they received their draft notice. Do not know of one who voluntarily went during the Vietnam War.
My grandparents saw his dad. My parents saw them both. And I got to see Arlo in concert a few years ago. And even more in this day and age his music matters. I never understood alot of why my parents liked him until I heard him for myself.
This song makes for a heady and important statement. I have countless friends serving in the forces today & when they come home few really want to hear or understand them.

Tears flowed down my face when I first heard this song - still do when I hear this. Lost 3 friends in Vietnam and 1 to Canada. A great tribute to all in uniform. And prescient as well. To all who served and are serving - just because some people are against the war doesn't mean that they don't honor those that served or are serving. All too many do not realize that particular dichotomy.

I am Canadian and our men and woman fought in Vietnam and Afghanistan also. The fear never leaves till they are home.
I’m one those Canadian who volunteered born and raised in Winnipeg moved to the states late 50s. Volunteered for the draft in 68 nam 69-70…..sandman
I was too young for Nam I had friends who served and their big brothers. I had buddies in the 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars. Not all made it home, others came back suffering from the stress of combat. I really appreciate this song about those that served in combat. Every time a unit came home I was there to greet them.

My father joined the service in world War two at 17. He was sent to Okayama in 44 and 45 , he saw more than young man should see at that age or any age. After the war he became a NYC firefighter, I followed in his footsteps. God bless you veterans and thank you!

Thank you. I came home and was called a "baby killer", and in a way we all bear responsibility for war. I hid my war, I felt ashamed for years. I was welcomed back to America 25 years later by my son's friend's dad, a Hmong. He was the first person to thank me for my service, and the first to welcome me home. So folks when you see a vet, don't just thank them, welcome them home. Thanks folks, welcome home.

I was one of those who got spat upon at O'Hare in Chicago ... 1973 was a very long time ago ... my tears to this song are for the many ... you'll find their names on a big wall in Washington D.C. ... and my daughter made it back from Iraq ... glad she had a different reception. What a great song. I was in Viet Nam and I still ache for all the guys - and Vietnamese - and all others who were lost over there. That war was a lie like all the rest, started by a bunch of lunatics who wanted to test out and sell all the weapons they had developed. I ache for the people who get involved in these lying wars, who lose their family members and those who lose their homes, and all they have. Some day, when humanity grows up, we won't see people as strangers to kill. We will see them as our brothers and sisters and we will love them as we are supposed to do. May God bless everyone who walks this Earth and may He bring them all back home. And may He bless the animals too, who suffer at the hands of fools.
As we approach another Memorial Day our sons, daughters, Fathers, Mothers and Friends are still out their serving and protecting us so we can live this peaceful life. Some will come home and some wont. All will be changed forever. God Bless you all and Thank you.
Seen Arlo 3 times.... the 1st was when I was a student at Washington State University in 1979. Got to meet him, an I'll never forget!! I Got to tell him how much his father's music meant to me... an how much his music did too!! he was very nice. :)

My wife and I heard Arlo sing this in London last year. Magical.
My cousing made it back he was a green beret; jumped out of planes. He never talked about it. He died homeless and of a drug overdose. Heroin and Cocaine -- once he came back he was never the same. My son signed up during the Iraqi war and he too came back broken. Now though we were able to get him help for PTSD and he was finally awarded disability.

What Arlo is singing about, is exactly why you will see many, many Vietnam Vets greeting these returning military members as they come through airports around this country. They do not want the same to happen to them as did happen to our generation of the 1960's-1970's of Vietnam Veterans.

We made the mistake of equating the war with the soldiers who fought in it--it was a needless, unpopular war, and people tended to blame the soldiers, when they should have blamed the politicians and the military. Soldiers do what they have been trained to do, or what they have to do, to survive.
No blame, no shame.
