They should change the title to ‘US does military drills’. Japan technically never gained independence from the U.S after the second world war. The U.S gave them autonomy to rule their land but in exchange, the U.S implemented several military bases in Japan. Even if Japan did not want to participate, they basically have no choice because the U.S could coerce them.

Most countries do not want war or military competition. It does not mean that when the United States shows its strength, all countries will have the confidence to choose sides. This also include the island of Taiwan and also Senkaku or Diaoyu. The US took these and gave Taiwan back to China as the ruling party in China was a friend to the US at that time.
