  • The US, Philippines and Japan have begun joint naval drills for the first time, in the strategically important South China Sea. They're being held in waters off the Bataan province of the Philippines, and will last a week. They include maritime law enforcement training and search-and-rescue missions.
The nations are boosting how they cooperate to deter growing Chinese assertiveness. Beijing claims large maritime regions that overlap the exclusive economic zones of other nations - including the Philippines.

The Chinese coast guard's speaker couldn't accurately convey the intended tone and meaning of his pre-written response since he's obviously not experienced at speaking English. The response was spelled out as:
_We hope you can cooperate with "our peace." _*_*winky face*_*

Taiwan(ROC in Nanjing then) claims 11dashline since 1945, such claim got supported by West and Soviet, US navy even gave 4 warships to Chinese took over Taiping and Dongsha in 1946, why international sociaty didn't oppose ROC's claim then? why US didn't give South China Sea to Phillppines then? because ROC is most important ally with West and Soviet as biggest contributor against Japan in Asia during WWII, but American Phillippines, French Vietnam, British Malaya were still colonies in 1945, if US master gave a gift to his Chinese friend then Phillippines slave couldn't say NO then, today's world order is WWII order.
China(PRC in Beijng) inherited ROC's same claim after Chinese Civil War 1949, but gave up Bach Long Vi island to North Vietnam in 1957 and claim 9dashline since then,
Vietcong used to support PRC claim in South China Sea when CCP and Vietcong were allies against USA then, but Vietnam inherited same claim like South Vietnam after 1975.
Philippines took ROC Taiwan's Thitu island in 1971 and Taiwan gave up to take back under USA pressure, because ROC's biggest threat is PRC.
PRC Beijing retook Paracel island from South Vietnam 1974, PRC retook Johnson South Reef from Vietnam 1988, but PRC didn't take all Spratly Islands when PLA navy was still tiny.
so from Taipei perspective especailly from KMT, Phillippines and PRC are both invader in ROC territory, but clearly PRC is bigger threat than Phillippines to Taiwan island.
because Taiwan is too weak and heavily dependent on USA so Taiwan kept silent, ROC now only controls Taiping and Dongsha island, DPP didn't even criticize Phillippines anymore.
so from Beijing perspective, ROC is civil war loser in exile, Phillippines is invader, PLA can just retake all islands within 9dashline,
but CCP didn't want to push ASEAN to pro-USA, then PRC calmed down tension and welcomed Duterte because he is pro-China invader,
but when Marcos becomes pro-US invader, then PRC would give Phillippines maximum pressure, like arming Scarborough Shoal again.
so what China implies: if you want peace then don't side with USA, just keep following Duterte's route then I won't harrass you.

South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent. This name is a result of early European interest in the sea as a route from Europe and South Asia to the trading opportunities of China. In the 16th century, Portuguese sailors called it the China Sea (Mare da China); later needs to differentiate it from nearby bodies of water led to calling it South China Sea.[4] The International Hydrographic Organization refers to the sea as "South China Sea (Nan Hai)".[5]
The Yizhoushu, which was a chronicle of the Western Zhou dynasty (1046-771 BCE), gives the first Chinese name for South China Sea as Nanfang Hai (Chinese: 南方海; pinyin: Nánfāng Hǎi; lit. 'Southern Sea'), claiming that barbarians from that sea gave tributes of hawksbill sea turtles to the Zhou rulers.[6] The Classic of Poetry, Zuo Zhuan, and Guoyu classics of the Spring and Autumn period (771-476 BCE) also referred to the sea, but by the name Nan Hai (Chinese: 南海; pinyin: Nán Hǎi; lit. 'South Sea') in reference to the State of Chu's expeditions there.[6] Nan Hai, the South Sea, was one of the Four Seas of Chinese literature. There are three other seas, one for each of the four cardinal directions.[7] During the Eastern Han dynasty (23-220 CE), China's rulers called the sea Zhang Hai (Chinese: 漲海; pinyin: Zhǎng Hǎi; lit. 'distended sea').[6] Fei Hai (Chinese: 沸海; pinyin: Fèi Hǎi; lit. 'boiling sea') became popular during the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. Usage of the current Chinese name, Nan Hai (South Sea), gradually became widespread during the Qing Dynasty.[8]
In Southeast Asia it was once called the Champa Sea or Sea of Cham, after the maritime kingdom of Champa (nowadays Central Vietnam), which flourished there before the sixteenth century.[9] The majority of the sea came under Japanese naval control during World War II following the military acquisition of many surrounding South East Asian territories in 1941. Japan calls the sea Minami Shina Kai "South China Sea". This was written 南支那海 until 2004, when the Japanese Foreign Ministry and other departments switched the spelling to 南シナ海, which has become the standard usage in Japan. "West Philippine Sea" is the official designation by the Philippine government of eastern parts of South China Sea that are included in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. The term is also sometimes incorrectly used to refer to South China Sea as a whole.
In China, it is called the South Sea, (南海; Nánhǎi), and in Vietnam the East Sea, Biển Đông.[10][11][12] In Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, it was long called the South China Sea (Tagalog: Dagat Timog Tsina, Malay: Laut China Selatan), with the part within Philippine territorial waters often called the "Luzon Sea", Dagat Luzon, by the Philippines.[13]

PRC Beijing retook Paracel island from South Vietnam 1974, PRC retook Johnson South Reef from Vietnam 1988, but PRC didn't take all Spratly Islands when PLA navy was still tiny.
so from Taipei perspective especailly from KMT, Phillippines and PRC are both invader in ROC territory, but clearly PRC is bigger threat than Phillippines to Taiwan island.
because Taiwan is too weak and heavily dependent on USA so Taiwan kept silent, ROC now only controls Taiping and Dongsha island, DPP didn't even criticize Phillippines Vietnam anymore.
so from Beijing perspective, ROC is civil war loser in exile, Phillippines is invader, PLA can just retake all islands within 9dashline,
but CCP didn't want to push ASEAN to pro-USA, then PRC calmed down tension and welcomed Duterte because he is pro-China invader,
but when Marcos becomes pro-US invader, then PRC would give Phillippines maximum pressure, like arming Scarborough Shoal again.
so what China implies: if you want peace then don't side with USA, just keep following Duterte's route then I won't harrass you now even you are invading Chinese territory.
Everyone knows Phillipines wants USA to deter China, but CCP attacked USA, India, Soviet, Vietnam on border in last Cold War when China was poorer than Africa,
USA failed to deter CCP to intervene in Korean War and Vietnam War then, so can USA really deter CCP to intervene Fourth Indochina War today?
Vietnamese suffered 3 Indochina War as proxy war in Cold War, it's much much more brutal than today's Ukraine War between USA and Russia,
like CCP vs France in First Indochina War,
like CCP vs USA in Second Indochina War,
like CCP vs Soviet in Third Indochina War,
Three Indochina Wars killed at least 3 mllion locals, Phillippines was lucky because they don't know what is proxy war battlefield looked like,
      they will know soon.

@@lvjinbin28 Thank you for your perspectives and fine long essay, brother, sir. They are fairly accurate. Here's my opinion, your view and PRC view is one and only. No relevant nation recognizes that view. PRC continues to threaten Taiwan and bullies US allies like the Philippines. PRC is now a strategic rival to the US. The US and its allies have the Hague Tribunal ruling of 2016 as an international legal basis to oppose PRC imperialism ( 9-dash line) in the South China Sea. "They will know soon". Lmao. If PRC attacks Taiwan, US will intervene without any legal Treaty. If PRC fires water cannons or lasers at Filipinos, it is an act of war according to US/Filipino Mutual Defense Treaty. The Filipinos "will know soon" When? When the cows come home? Lmao. PRC artificial islands do not have fresh water or mountains to hide weaponry and is 600 miles from PRC. They are against large islands with lots of fresh water and mountains. Excellent PRC military strategy. Lmao. "They will know soon" lmao. Putin is learning that "they will know soon" lesson in Ukraine. This is what PRC "they will know soon" lesson should really really look very very seriously. The US is not finished as a superpower yet. PRC is using its "gift" SCS against US selfish national interests. Brother, war is a terrible alternative as Putin and Ukraine are experiencing as we speak. Time for peaceful, diplomatic and meaningful negotiations in the South China Sea.

I wish the media would use the correct terms. China has not been assertive its been aggressive and belligerent. Assertive suggests being open to others opinions while expressing its own. This is not the case. China aggressively demands other bend to its rule, ie, "correct their incorrect behaviours" without stating what behaviours and how china wants them to behave. Its all very vague yet belligerent all at the same time.
