- A look back at Satan, who also went by Blind Fury and Pariah at certain points in the career after releasing an amazing first album and getting largely overlooked due to their name. Join me as I take a look at the music and the albums of one of the most consistently awesome NWOBHM bands, featuring Brian Ross on vocals, Graeme English on bass, Sean Taylor on drums, and the dynamic duo of Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins on guitar.

Brian Ross is one of the best voices from the NWOBHM movement. Not only was he awesome with Satan, but also with Blitzkrieg.
I saw Satan live last year, he was amazing live. For a man who’s pushing his 70, he can still hit those high notes. After the show, I asked him how does it and his reply was simply “I don’t smoke”. Makes sense to me lol
I just got to the part where he said he sounds like Russ North sorry .......
Original>>He also sounds a whole lot like Russ North from clovenhoof
For me, Court In The Act is not just the greatest NWOBHM album, but the greatest Metal album ever made period.
i second that, what an awesome band, still in my playlist after 40 years
Agreed. I can't think of a better metal album.
They waited too long. By the time this album came our in 83, metal was going a completely different direction. I remember getting this album when it first came out and already seemed dated.
I agree with kerrang, sounds like hot garbage.
@@trevorD1156Kerrang are trendy fakes, who cares what they have to say.
As soon as Metal fell out of popularity in the early 90’s, they jump into Grunge/Alternative Rock bandwagon and then came back crawling back when metal was “hip” again.
"Court In the Act" is such a barnstorming NWOBHM classic
As we see in this comment section, Michael Jackson is such an underrated singer. I love his tone and his era is still my favorite Satan/Pariah Era.
Satan getting a Michael Jackson to sing for them always cracks me up 8)
😏 _BEAT IT!_ 😁
I am requesting FIFTH ANGEL (USA) as the next metal lesson 🤘🏻🔥🔥
Fifth Angel the band, that wrote the song Fifth Angel, from the album Fifth Angel? Lol hell yeah 🤘🤠👍
@@m92quad55 how very Metal Church of them, huh? It’s a PNW thing…
Wait, Maiden did that too.
Thank you! Love this band, no bad album in their discography🤘
Seriously! Even including their name changes, no album in 40 years is less than 4/5.
I am officially requesting Malice as the next metal lesson !!! 🤘
It would be awesome the first album is so good.)
Totally agree, and FORBIDDEN also!
Yeah, that's an excellent idea. I second that.
I second that too. Malice was a phenomenal band
@@Scottocaster6668Forbidden will be a short episode
Court in the Act is one of my favorite albums of all time
Satan is the #1 underrated and under-appreciated heavy metal band. They deserve the success and recognition of Priest and Maiden.
For me, Satan, Mercyful Fate and Angel Witch and the peak of heavy metal.
Amazing band, with a stupid name that has haunted them forever. Court is a stone cold classic of course but it's the quality of their output since Life Sentence which really stands out imo. They are by far the best NWoBHM band in the 2000s.
Their name is badass. It was initially what drew me to them in the first place
Just discovered this band last year! I've always wondered where they came from❤
What can we possibly say about these guys to even scratch the surface of their majesty and importance? Uncle Brian, one of my all favourites!
Satan and Wolf, great bands from Newcastle. Sometimes I feel that if these bands were from London they could have had more support. Court in the act is such a killer album!
This is cool. Seen Satan live for the first time like a year ago, and it was killer. Satan is still churning out classic albums. Helstar would be a cool one, for Metal school, to cover. The music for Helstar, is similar to Satan, and they are both underrated. Satan was probably a influence to Helstar. Thanks for the video...Cheeers!!!
YES!! Helstar for sure
"right in the docket" - Dude, this is why I love your videos so much.
Satan has such a great redemption arc. In fact, I'd say their reunion albums were better than the 80s stuff. All those years and other bands really seemed to hone the musicianship. I think it's awesome they got to live their metal dreams out. Very deserving dudes.
Your docus are awesome, doesnt matter what band i like them all.
First i got say thanks for this episode, love everything satan has recorded including the demos ! Court in the act is a classic, brian ross is a great vocalist and a legend , Michael Jackson is also a great vocalist they both brought a good flavor to the band . Pariah albums are also amazing ! Blind fury i like it . I do own all this records , but i got to say that Steve Ramsey is a beast of a guitar player and a driving force in the band ,no disrespect to to all the members of the band past and present. His guitar playing and ideas are amazing.Too bad Steve has not received the respect he deserves. I am still blasting this music all the time on my stereo and i am 49 years old .LONG LIVE THE NWOBHM!!!! 🤘AND THANKS AGAIN BROTHER.
I've been waiting for his video for a long time and it was worth the wait. I love this band so much and they deserve alot more exposure. I hope this video helps to get more fans.
My favourite Brian Ross era songs :
Blades of Steel
Alone in the Dock
Incantations
Atom by Atom
The Fall of Persophone
Ghosts of Monongah
Twelve Infernal Lords
From the Michael Jackson era:
The Ice Man
Avalanche of a Million Souls
Gerrymander
Missionary of Mercy
Saw them live last year with Haunt and Night Demon as the openers they were amazing in person
Woah, cool lineup!
Man, that's one show I'd have loved to catch!
Always pretty nice to see a new video in the series Metal School. Don't matter the band you cover, all your episodes ROCK! Keep up the great work, I'm a fan from the beginning! Btw. I had the single Kiss of Death/Heads will Roll (1982) back in the day. Looong time ago.
Yeah, I gotta agree. Whatever the band, the narrator is always entertaining.
Man, I am hearing SO MUCH early Blind Guardian in these guys! You can definitely hear where Hansi got his inspiration. Thanks for introducing me to these guys 🤘🏻
Nice, one of my requests is finally here 🤘
michael Jackson rules !
I finally managed to see Satan live, in northern Portugal, on Jan 14th 2023. From 1985 to 97, i co-directed a regional weekly Metal radioshow, called Metallic Nights (a discreet, low-profile name, thought not to cause waves, and endure through time). In 87, during a French holiday where i proceeded to refill the stock, i found ''Suspended sentence''; once returned, the team reckoned there were 92 brilliant seconds of music on a short track, that screamed bloody exquisite radio-intro! So, for ten years in a row the ''92nd symphony'' was our characteristic opener. I't's the perfect corker. Metal majestic power. But the whole album is like that. Though my heart is with Luso-paganism, ... uh... hail.... Satan. PostScriptum.- Enthralled by the memory, it'd still be unforgivable not to highlight the (customary yet always high standard) quality of yet another MetalSchool lecture. I'm enrolling for the exam on one of my favourite subjects. NWOBHM.
Portugal caralho!
@@0000Endgfgv Hirax !!!
Thanks! And damn, yeah 92nd Symphony does make for a badass intro. Awesome selection
Newcastle has definitely given us some of the Most impressive & amazing British Metal Bands in these last 45 years, and being among the last great New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands to enjoy even greater success than when they were younger, #Satan definitely knows how to keep their momentum going despite their brief attempts to change their names & even their style at the end of the 1980s; besides, both “Court in the Act” & “Life Sentence” are absolute Gems ☺️ 😊 😉 🎸 👍 🤘 😻 🥲 🤩 💯 👍
It's the Cleveland, Ohio of England, as in a hotbed for heavy metal (like rock n' roll). 🤗
Life Sentence is definitely my favorite Satan album. I've always enjoyed their albums, but I just can't get enough of Life Sentence.
Satan's Court in the Act and Cities Annihilation Absolute are two Albums that were So Good and Slightly Off Center of other Bands at the Time that they were just in a League of their Own and Over the Heads of the Listening Majority at the time of Release.
I agree...🤘
Totally, Cities deserved to be way bigger. I don’t think repeating the exact same album cover for their EP and first album did them any favors tho 😕
As someone who is utterly obsessed with all facets of this band (No matter the name or lineup), this was GREAT! Well done. I have EVERYTHING this band has ever put out ( including some bootlegs) except for the guardian demo. Been trying to track that down for years.
I will get all of Pariah albums. 😀👍🎸🤘
Outstanding choice! A band with zero bad albums and no other band sounds remotely like them, despite being a "traditional metal band".
Is it weird that Metal School is effectively my favorite TV show at this point? I mean...your videos are outstanding, but what does that say about modern television?
Anywho, keep those great videos coming!
Haha glad to hear it! Yeah, I grew up addicted to tv and I haven’t watched any broadcast tv shows now in probably 10 years. So I feel ya there.
Glad you’re enjoying the channel!
Band that still makes great albums!
Never heard of Pariah, Thanks Bro for turning me on to this GREAT Band 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Your best Metal School ever. Of course, it helps when you have the best metal band ever as your subject.
Ramsey and English are an amazing duo here and in Skyclad.🤟
92nd Symphony is just cool, man. Never heard anything like that.
I really like those first two Pariah albums, and "Court In The Act" is obviously a classic. Most of the newer Satan stuff is really good, too! Thanks for the video!
Life Sentence is a perfect 10 of an album.
I guess you can say the devil finally gets his due.
Well done Satan.
Cruel Magic and Earth Infernal are definitely my fav albums, going with your ratings I would put them both as 12/10. Cruel Magic has a more raw feel to it, whereas Earth Infernal is a little slower, but heavier and more mysterious. Having listened to all their songs countless times, it's clear that after Life Sentence, all subsequent albums brought something new and all have their own unique feel to them, while retaining the core Satan essence. Also good to highlight their eloquent lyrics with many metaphors and deeper meanings, which I adore. All in all, my top favorite music of all time, definitely.
Satan is so classic!!
I still have my original Court In The Act LP I purchased in the early 80's. I was most recently totally blown away by the Cruel Magic release. Then I picked up Life Sentence followed by Earth Infernal. I have to say though I am still blown away by Cruel Magic which makes that my favorite of the 4 Satan releases I have. 🤘
Love the videos, if u have the time i would like to see one made about Kai Hansen, who has been apart and helped quite alot of bands, for an example he created bands like helloween, iron savior and gamma ray and helped some bands on different albums like Blind guardian, avantasia and Angra :).
Really cool you got to cover Satan, along with the Blind Fury stuff too.
Court In The Act really was a headf*ck back when released. As a guitar player, I loved it. Great songs! I never liked the production, tbh. On the other hand, we have the unbelievable great music. So... I just ordered the re-released CD. Because it is 2024 and I need it.
Awesome! Been hoping for an episode on Satan - one of my favorite bands! Love the channel!
They hold up live and recorded til today in 2024 !!
Broken Treaties, Life Sentence and Incantations are my fave tunes
Your videos are great! But you should really do Tokyo Blade or Praying Mantis. Im surprised you havent done a video about them yet
I’d like see TNT ( Sweden )
Yes! Praying Mantis rules so much...We need to petition the Metal Archives to finally include them within their hallowed pantheon.
Excellent excellent excellent !!! Outstanding video, thank you!
I listened to Court In the Act fairly often through the 80's and ever since for that matter. Satan is one of the best NWOBHM bands ever. It's great finally seeing them get the recognition they have so richly deserved for decades.
It's a shame that Mike Jackson never joined another metal band after his departure. I really dig his unique, raspy singing on the Satan and Pariah albums.
Demon feels like an appropriate one to do after this. Don’t Break the Circle!
Brian Ross doesn't sound similar as in his youth but THE SAME! Have seen them 2 years ago in Bucharest. A lesson of professionalism, passion and talent for the new bands. Fantastic concert. They are very happy every time they see fans asking for picks, sticks and signatures.
This is such a great tribute to my young years! I was just allowed into hardrockcafé Dynamo (I was 14 at the time) and Satan / Blind Fury was sort of the regular band there at the time. So cool that you showed their tribute to the Dynamo-café in the form of the Blind Fury-song ‘Dynamo’! Oh man those great times. So grateful I was there….
this is a new one for me,kicks ass awesome guitar work
Atom by Atom
Earth Infernal
Newer albums are getting better & better!!!
Awesomeness!!
1 of The GREAT NWOBHM Bands🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
MERCI
Court in the Act was such a great album
This is what I grew up with!
Cool! I love learning about new bands. And Court in the Act has such an AWESOME cover
One Of The best comebacks ever. Btw, "Evil Eyes" by BLIND FURY is one Of the best songs the band (with the name you want) Made... one piece Of data, Ian Swift replaced Brian in AVENGER, wich Brian was a founding member.
Another amazing video...😃👍🤘🤘
Alone In The Dock was a phenomenal song.
Great choice. This group was a fave back in the day. Would love to have those records back.
The relationship between the bands Satan, Blitzkrieg and Avenger is interesting.
I think B. G. "Battalions of fear" sounds very similar to Satan's " Suspended sentence" and "Into the future".
their modern stuff is really good
This is one of the bands I think of, whenever I think of the New Wave British Heavy Metal! 🇬🇧🎸🤘
Sounds like a whole lotta badass to me. Thanks!
Many thanks for all the bands I've discovered because of you
🤘🏻
Incredible band! I got introduced to them and Angel Witch on the same day, while searching Blogspot for some download links to old school heavy metal back in my early 20s. Needless to say, I was hooked on both from the beginning, and seeing both of them eventually return in such a spectacular fashion has been nothing short of amazing. I feel like the material they've put out post-reunion is actually their strongest they've done (goes for both bands). That being said, while I've been aware of both Blind Fury and Pariah, I've never really given them the attention they deserve. Might need to go and rectify that now...
As always, love your videos, looking forward to the next one, whatever band that will be!
This recent run of albums is unfuckwithable!
Next on Metal School : Seattle's NEVERMORE 🇺🇲
Love my cd 2in 1 Into the future and Suspended sentence, what an eargasm....
Another great little metal documentary! Satan rocks!
Lack of consistency seemed to hold this band back I the early days.
I'm officially asking for a video on Sentenced from Finland.
As always your work is greatly appreciated and enjoyable
Great! a 51:45 Metal School video.
Wild episode this time !
Spoiler = BLIND FURY - very expensive.
During covid, I startes digging into the history and origins of metal. Court in the Act totally blew my mind when I heard it. Compared to what was happening in the metal world when the record came out, these guys were really pushing boundaries. Listen to "The Ritual" and tell me that sounds like 1983 to you! Amazing band, shame they didn't get the recognition they deserved.
'Missionary of Mercy' has an amazing main riff! It's probably my favorite of the Pariah era with the bad ass groove of 'Reactionary' right behind it.
can you do a video about Blue Cheer, i would love a video about them.
keep up the good work you have been doing!🤘
Great video! You should do one dedicated to Skyclad. Cheers!
I won't get tired of saying it: you are fucking amazing. Thank you so, so much for your impressive work. Metallic greetings from Spain.
I saw these guys play a show in Columbus, Ohio in the spring of 2023 with Haunt and Night Demon. They were an absolutely phenomenal live act, and one of the best I've ever seen. The two guitarists were soloing in tandem and playing so perfectly, I couldn't believe that what I was seeing/hearing was real. And they were HEAVY as HELL. Unfortunately, there were some pinheads in the crowd who yelled ''freebird'' in between songs. But Brian Ross was a professional, and just let it roll off his back. As they were playing, I couldn't help but think about the many bands out there with more notoriety, but far less talent, who charge a fortune for far less of a show. Satan deserve to be better known. Their songs are catchy, heavy, and have interesting lyrics. They are one of the all-time great bands in all of Heavy Metal, and if you get a chance, catch their show, they rule!!!
Lucky dog! 🤗😇😎🤘

Court in the Act is a bloody perfect album mate!!!!!!!
SATAN???
Never heard of them before.
I heard they’re pretty big down under.
me either,im likin it though
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411
Trevor Robinson on the first demo sounds like a cross between Rob Halford and Stephen Pearcy...would you not agree?
Fantastic video again
@@sylentstorm8422 thanks, brother! 🤘🏻
@@MetalSchoolChannel you’re welcome, dude. I found no errors BTW. Sorry about that 😎
❤❤❤
I would like to see heaven gate as the next lesson!! Underrated and no one has covered them! Would definitely love to know more about them!
Thank you for the life sentence brother man!!!
Skyclad also featured Martin Walkier on vocals, from Sabbat, one of the greatest UK Thrash bands ever. Sabbat also had a guitar player named Andy Sneap. Wonder whatever became of him?
He’s producing Accept albums now, I know that much
Sneap also plays live with Judas Priest in place of Glenn Tipton.
I remember hearing Siege Mentality on a compilation about a decade ago and being absolutely FLOORED that it wasn’t a brand new band of 20 somethings. Imo Life Sentence is the best metal comeback album ever (even over all of Judas Priest’s masterpiece comeback albums).
The most consistent guitar duo of all time.
Last year in Atlanta I had the pleasure of telling Brian Ross that Satan blows the shit out of Metallica and Megadeth. The Satan set the venue on fire with their set before Venom Inc came on and blew the roof. Truly one of the heaviest shows I've ever seen. Interestingly enough, the original singer for Satan sounds like Dave Mustaine, or vice versa, if you listen to that first demo.
Totally agree about the Mustaine comparison haha
Lol, I knew Trial by Fire because Blind Guardian did a cover of it. But I never knew it was a cover, I always thought it was an original song. That's cool. I'll surely listen to some of their albums, some tracks looked fire.
I will get all of Satan albums. 😀👍🎸🤘
you always pick the best bands!
