  • Partnership for a Drug-Free America puts this ad up in December 1988 regarding marijuana use. Very ineffective ad for an ineffective law, I'd say.

This is the most accurate PSA on marijuana.

Exactly. He’s the same as when he smoked his first joint. He’s always had trouble looking for a job and before smoking pot was probably an unmotivated depressed person, thus now he smokes pot.

Here's a fun fact for anyone with very fine tuned ears... the audio playing on the television (that is before one of the actors changes the channel) comes from another PDFA PSA on marijuana called 'The Great Experiment' (a boy gets called in a lab for an experiment). If you're not convinced, try to find that advert, and then concentrate on the sound playing on the TV in this advert. Most subliminal Easter egg ever.

I think this one is pretty good actually, I think the worst that weed does to people is that it sort of keeps you comfortable in what ever situation you are in, but can delay you in making necessary changes in your life. Once you smoke weed it sort of puts you in a zone I had a hard home life and smoked it and it sort of help me feel comfortable with my situation and I think for some people that is what happens they smoke it and just sort of get stuck at the age that they started smoking it until I worked really hard to make a change in my life I felt like I was stuck myself.

I don't think the point of the ad is to argue for the continued criminalization of pot use but, rather, to call attention to the potential (negative) effects of habitual marihuana use. As such, I think that the ad was actually one of the most effective of the AdCouncil's 1980s anti-drug campaigns (along with the "this is your brain on drugs" spot).

I worked with a Juvenile Court judge who would tell kids on marijuana that "It makes you stupid and lazy." And there's enough of that going around.

PDFA nailed it with this one. Marijuana definitely isn't as damaging as methamphetamine or cocaine, but it does make you too comfortable, on a level that's pretty much similar to being lazy. So while I think it's okay to decriminalise and legalise marijuana, people who do use it should be careful with how much they use it.
    So... smoke responsibly, I guess.
