So, I ended up seeing your notification first ... So I watched the construction before the final product! You promised me something special with Eric and I am extremely pleased with this EPIC collab!
I had the privilege and honor of being the slapstick guy for the Ohio Symphony Orchestra. I was picked at random and brought on stage. The conductor asked me if I had any musical knowledge. I told him he was in luck because I am a percussionist. In front of nearly 1000 people I successfully hit every slapstick note for this piece. 🙏🏻
A couple of Christmases ago we did this, and I was playing the 6 foot long slap stick. The conductor said he wanted it louder. I played it progressively louder until he remarked right before the performance that he wanted it as loud as I possibly could make it... and it’s now a 5 foot long slap stick, because the last foot basically imploded on the last note 🤣. We were supposed to play it again this year, and I was supposed to play the jingle bells because I can no longer be trusted with the slap stick!
@@dumbdumb9143 Absolutely! I've had things break silently, and I've had instruments where the big one couldn't go nearly as loud as the small one (triangle and tambourine for example) All depends on the materials used in the item. A huge slapstick can be underwhelming volume wise, depending on the wood
I fail to see the issue you did as requested, it's on him for asking for the loudest possible sound out of the instrument without considering it may break
Sleigh Ride is a staple. I've played it multiple times with every symphonic band I've joined, from middle school, to high school, to multiple bands since high school. It's a tune I've learned to hate to love.
Yeah, it's grossly overplayed. I also played it in just about every band I was in. Its still in my top two favorite Christmas tunes. I don't care what anybody thinks. It's a fun song.
The slap stick in my high school band had "THE EMASCULATOR" written on it. For the past 30+ years I've never heard this song without thinking about that fact.
My high school band recently made an 8' slapstick last year and we're using it for sleigh ride. Just get a couple 2/4's of any length and connect them with a sturdy door hinge
Those sleigh bells must be deafening. We have a normal ~20-bell set and it is shockingly loud; I can't imagine how much noise a couple hundred bells puts out!
All hilarious shenanigans aside, bravi to the two temple block players who do the bridge of the tune! How the hell do you co-ordinate playing those triplets like that??????!!!!
I performed in a youth orchestra with another high school band once, and this high school has a competition every year as to who can make the largest slapstick. And yes, 12 foot tall 2x4 slapsticks are even more insane in person as they are in this video.
This is the best version of sleigh ride I ever heard. Although the pair of cymbals has a little too much sustain for this, which makes it sound a little noisy. But apart from that this is a great video!
This is thee thee year for Sleigh Ride. I have seen at least 2 dozen of these videos featuring extremely talented musicians specializing each instrument in the orchestra. Thanks Guys.
We had a really big slapstick in elementary (our elementary went to 6th and it mightve been 7th in middle school we played it) and when we played this, that was the highlight of the day. After the concert, my parents were telling me some people ahead of them were saying "He's gonna do it!". You've never felt true joy without slapping the slapstick
I've played Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" innumerable times over the course of my career and it's still one of best holiday songs ever written. It wouldn't and couldn't be a Christmas Concert without it. And the big sleigh bells and whips are the bomb. Marching drums, not so much.
Recording drums outside with traffic in the background. No problems. Drums plenty louder than traffic. Ha. That handle on the sleigh bells is hilarious. As if you could lift that with one hand. Love the sound they make. It is massive.
How creative! 🙌 Really enjoyed this! Litterarly just posted a cover of this and looove hearing others' interpretations, especially non-vocal ones--Look fwd to hearing more from you guys! (... & that shaker looks heavy!)
As the person who got the sleigh bells foisted upon me every time we performed Sleigh Ride at my school despite having seniority over the rest of the percussion section, seeing that monstrosity of a bell set feels almost like revenge.
Be sure to check out how we built the mega sleigh bells and slap stick on RDavidR’s channel - ruclips.net/video/vm9g_poki0E/видео.html

I almost died playing those sleigh bells...
I honestly want to make that now
That looked like it was fun 😂
And I have to play regular sleigh bells for concert band and still have trouble controlling the sound.

Now this is how the song was meant to be performed. Also, we really need a full tenor cover of Sleigh Ride now.

As a clarinet player i agree with the "joy" of playing this.
If by joy you mean utter chop hell for horns then yea i get what you mean
yall got to play this every year? i just did it once in 7th or 8th grade
This reminds me of my high school concerts. This song always got me into the Christmas spirit.
