But I honestly love the instruments and respect the hell out of people who get really good with them. I mostly did the bare minimum in school but these days I sure wish I could shred with 4 mallets on a marimba.
I was the bass 5 player in my school this last season and in our third movement, we had this impact thing where I was playing this triplet, kinda Mars sounding drum thing with the flats. I was the only bass playing it. The drill had us moving forward like quite a bit so I was crabbing. The snares and the tenors were almost 20 yards away from me because we were in this massive arc set. It was absolute hell to line up. And I couldn't really see them either because it's bass 5. And keep in mind, this was my first year on battery in highschool.

I still suck with triplets that have ties between notes and eighth notes within each triplet beat OH, and Fanfare for the Common Man, I couldn’t get the spacing between the two eighth notes down for the bass drum. It’s played really slow, and for whatever reason, I just couldn’t get the subdivision correct.
11:40 the opposite happened for me. I played front line mallet percussion in my high school’s marching band. Senior year, I play xylophone just as the drumline comes in from way back in the backfield. Trying to listen to the one snare playing, and come in on time with them, and seeing the drum majors being on time but a little ahead f the sound getting to me made sure I always sucked at my entrance, coming in too fast and too early. Very beginning of the show, and it’s a very noticeable mess up since it’s xylophones, they cut through anything! I slow down with the measure but it sounds *awful* Here’s the show, I’m on the far left. Always struggled with that entrance. ruclips.net/video/kvmtwmyXTvI/видео.html show starts around 3:30
2:14 OMG! The Blue Knights DOT UNIFORM!! I marched BK in 1991 (Baritone) which was the first year they rolled out these awesome unis. I aged out in 1993. Best 3 years of my life 🎼🎺🥁👨🎤
In middle school i typically played the marimba parts but for my 8th grade percussion ensemble we played a song called gypsy dance. I had a snare a bongo part i wasn't able to play at all. When it got to the performance i messed up the entire time and even dropped my sticks.
There was also another piece i had trouble with in 9th grade called midnight sleigh ride. I had trouble cause it's just a constant 16 note pattern. I had to do it with a right hand lead but im left handed. Then from measure 61 to 70 the part changes and im not very good at rimshots.
I sucked at everything and ALWAYS had to practice, practice, practice. I ended up playing the drums for the high school jazz band while still in junior high lol. Marching quads I didn't suck at, but I HATED marching season. I liked concert. I did all the auxiliary parts lol.
Eric:"I fortunately had a band director who actually cared about all the percussionists. Me:"You fortunately had a band director who actually cared about the percussionists.😂😂
You mentioned about the distance and timing issue. I just realised my first ever (and so far only) show that I marched in (we never finished it because of people quiting) had a part that actually was even harder than having a tenor solo coming in right after a turn to the front. In one of the sets the percussion section actually had to split up to both sides of the field facing eachothers backs for a good 24 beats until turning 180 degrees to march back to the center. So besides the distance and therefore sound delay getting bigger and bigger with each step we not only had no sound reference, we also had no visual for those 24 beats on either the drum major or eachother to keep it together.
i remember doing the african bell carol between me (congas) and another percussionist (bongos) also had a choir concert that same night and I was sick (strep) and it hurt to talk for like 2 weeks let alone sing, it was a rough concert
I couldn’t read music till my junior year, so basically two years of marching band and indoor learning music by ear and only using the sheets for the sticking lol. Another one is I’m naturally left handed but I forced myself to learn how to play righty when I started learning drum set. I really only played rock and metal till high school so when I did flams I did them however it was comfortable for me (all left handed with the grace note essentially at the same height at the accent). Flash forward to high school I made the snare line and I went a whole year without ever realizing there was a difference between left handed and right handed flams. They fixed the grace note height issue but somehow never noticed my flams were lefty. Enter sophomore year and we got some new staff who marched and taught the Cadets and one of them noticed I played all my flams lefty. He was like bro right handed flams have the right hand higher. But again I didn’t realize righty flams have the left hand as the grace note so basically my left handed flams were correct but right handed flams ended up being malfs. Needless to say the entire drum staff was dumbfounded 😂
@@lasagnajames Ive played in bands since 6th grade so I’m pretty good at learning stuff by ear. My first few seasons marching I would use the mp3s our arranger sent out and then just watch the drummer next to me and referencing the sheets only for sticking. Worked alright for a while lol
@@lasagnajames I usually tried to avoid the mallet parts in concert band like the plague if I could lol but when I had to play mallets I listened to as many recordings as I could and then would figure it out note by note matching pitches as I heard them!
6:10... I think it's a better transition from a wind, string, or keyboard instrument to percussion than from percussion to wind, string, or keyboard instruments. If you start out knowing notes and key signatures, then going to a percussion instrument only requires you to learn drumming techniques like rolls and such. It comes with the added benefit that you know right off the bat how to play a song if you get put on a keyboard instrument like marimba or xylophone
i have recently made a new friend really quickly deeply - i.e. she is a recent really close friend. We share a lot together and spend a lot of time together and I have been sharing things (like art projects and other creative things) that I am really proud of. It was only after a while when I expressed surprise at picking up something quite easily where she made an "of course you did" kinda comment, that I realised she didn't pick up on the fact I ONLY share things that I am confident in, and ONLY start new things that I can see have a low barrier to entry. I was flattered that she thinks I am very able (or smart or skilled or whatever) but a really embarrassed that she doesn't realise how much of a fraud I am. I just never try at anything I might not take to easily.
1:30 I played african bell carol and I also tried that part but i was REALLY bad at it. Decided to swap to play the shekere because it was cool and easy.
I love how everyone hates mallets. They are my main game. Always were, always will be. I suck at quick snare everything tho. And jazz drumming. Oh and that one time we had only 3 drummers for 5 drumparts and the timpanist had to play through the whole thing. So I had to constantly change between bells and marimba, and because marimba needed 4 mallets this was really had for me.
You know, I haven't been in marching band for years, and I never marched in corps, but every time I watch your videos I miss marching :/ drum set is fun but I liked the amount of variety in ensembles I had in school
12:40 there had been a few times in our field show I just had to watch the our drum majors and tune out the pit cause we where so far back that sound travel became an issue.
That's craaazy that you were in Crown 2010! My brother was in high school marching band, and Crown was rehearsing at out school, and that's where I fell in love with band!!!
Ive been playing rock and heavy metal drums for 33 years. I learned the double stroke roll early on but always had trouble with singles. Till this day I suck at them. ty
My highschool band director was a percussionist herself growing up so percussion at my school was no joke. I miss marching now tbh. I played bass drum at first then tenors the rest of highschool
This is totally random but your thumbnail is the rhythm from Nintendo Duck Hunt when you shoot a bird haha. First thing that came to mind when I "played" your thumbnail in my head.
I just started high school and got snare. It’s awesome but I know that Some things we play I’m not very good at some parts. Mostly flams and paradiddles. But I’m gonna keep working on being better and practicing every day.
As an 11th grader who was put into concert band because the band director found out I was a musician and was forced to learn marimba and mallet persuasion, I second how frustrating it is, my problem was just learning how to read sheet music because I know where all the notes on mallet percussion instruments are but I couldn’t read sheet music till like 6 weeks ago
Just found your channel yesterday. Loved the few vids that I saw. Today comes and I continue checking out the channel. I was thinking that much of this seems to be like an east coast if not an NJ vibe of what band kids go thru. Then I saw your NJMEA logo! I was like, "was that the NJMEA logo?!?" Product of Parsippany Hills, and current teacher in Belleville, NJ! Good stuff, man!
holy shit, in my 7th grade year we played African Bell Carol, THE SAME PIECE SAME COMPOSITION EVERYTHING, AND WE DID THE COMBINED 8TH AND 7TH BAND THAT IS SO WEIRD
My most vivid memory at sucking at a drumming thing was the first time I tried to play quarter notes on the hi hat while playing the bass drum on the & of 2. The idea that my foot could do something in between notes my right hand was playing was something my brain was not ready to process. Also, it took me until my sophomore year of college to get my left hand to do and look like my right hand when I played.
I played African bell carol in 7th grade and I was put on vibes, I didn’t know the part until the day before the concert when I asked my friend how to play it and I memorized it.
My band director helps the percussion section by using food words like at 0:54 She would say "Straw-ber-ry, chili-dog, straw-ber-ry, chili-dog" It just makes the percussion section hungry 😭😭 but it really does help because some percussionist like to say what they're playing but its harder to do that the faster you're going and the more complicated the rythms are so saying food just makes it a little easier in general
Swiss Army Triplets. Teenage me was the master of the flam accents. But when I got to college and was properly introduced to swiss army triplets, I had NO idea how to wrap my head around them. Even coming out of college, my swiss army triplets weren't exactly clean. It took watching Danny Carey play that rudiment in Rosetta Stoned for it to finally click for me. Now the Swisses are a breeze.
I didn't know how to really count correctly until like my late junior year of High School. And I started playing drums in school in 6th grade. And I never stopped until I graduated high school.
I play a lot of instruments, but for the band I'm a saxophone. I've been wanting to learn percussion for a while now, especially drumset/snare/tenor, and recently picked it up so I can join marching band as a percussionest next year. This video made me realize that I have a long way to go, especially since I'm mostly teaching myself... this is going to be rough.
@@VIVISALT It's a lot of rhythm which I've never been good at reading off of sheet music haha. Honestly just buy a cheap pair of drumsticks and a practice pad and start learning. There's tons of good RUclips videos and sheet music out there. I started by watching beginner drum tutorials, learning exercises, and improving my rhythm game (check patterns help a *ton*) and I'm going to start learning the 40 rudiments next.
Hah I’m a trombone who learned baritone to march, but I love drumline and am learning percussion stuff from all of them because it’s fun. It’s definitely rough. I never underestimated the percussionists and all the work they do, but ahah I cannot do it. It’s… interesting. But imma keep working at it until I get good.

ok my guy, I just joined percussion. It’s my junior year, I have no concept of rhythm and I’m currently watching u as therapy thank u for existing because I’m so fucking screwed
I started marching band in the 8th grade as a tenor in the stands but mallets in the show. The. My 9th grade year same thing but our director wanted me to learn to march with lighter weight so tenor in the stands but snare marching. Then tenors for everything the rest of the years
any tips for mallets? im going to be a seventh grade but im going into concert band. I was playing pretty much 95% snare for 2 years and now they are making me mallets I need tips
so a while ago im practising O canada for a rememberance day ceremony...I remember struggling with 16th note triplets for a bit before finally being able to play it at speed.
Good Morning, (among other things i've sucked at) - a few years ago our band was playing Shostakovich's 5th symphony for our annual concert. I was playing cymbals and had 128 bars rest from the start till I had my first note. I came in 1 bar early. I earned the nickname Tim-Cym from our director
When I was in 7th grade I played African bell carol but there were only two people who could play the bongo part lol I played crash cymbals and got literally 6 notes in the entire song XD the best part was I was first chair lol idk why I didn’t get the bongo part
fun fact: the picture of mallet percussion instruments at 5:48 is at the James Madison University Music Building, i've been in that room and have played those instruments many times
from uk... thanks for the video... its mad the USA and UK have absolutely the the same ways of teaching drums... nobody should be put off by the hours and hours of practice... my one and only teacher was ex-military... the sheet music was finite, but at the same time he allowed the mistakes... improvisation is key to developing you're own style and marching bands (so to speak) take it out of you... yet it builds the first building blocks to develop your own style... so many people ive taught just want to bash away... it doesn't work like that thanks again, if you could do all that with footwork you'd be an absolute god!😄all the best
I remember learning mallets with in my freshman year, my percussion instructor and we were going through the notes. I will not forget the time he was going through the notes. He asked me what each and every note was and I was getting the hang of it. A B C D E F G H! He stared at me and I realized my mistake. We had a good laugh and now I have an idea on four mallet as a senior.
Snares had the same thing of facing back for are indoor show and it was so hard to time with front assemble we had to think of it like a half note ahead it was a mess and because season got cut short we never actually fixed it :( sad times

There was also another piece i had trouble with in 9th grade called midnight sleigh ride. I had trouble cause it's just a constant 16 note pattern. I had to do it with a right hand lead but im left handed. Then from measure 61 to 70 the part changes and im not very good at rimshots.
No way I played the same thing that year. That’s funny. I think I was auxiliary. I still have my music somewhere
I'm an adult learner and am very jealous of the music programming you had access to!
i remember doing the african bell carol between me (congas) and another percussionist (bongos) also had a choir concert that same night and I was sick (strep) and it hurt to talk for like 2 weeks let alone sing, it was a rough concert
I still suck at drums.
Huh? But but... you’re the smart one 1 :(
Anthony S Hey I am smart that’s why I am good at piano and music theory. I just can’t play that cleanly on snare.
I remember at a concert I had i forgot the 2nd half of the snare part and just made it up. Easily the scariest moment of my life.
Brhh
i can’t believe you went that long without knowing how to read music.
@@lasagnajames Ive played in bands since 6th grade so I’m pretty good at learning stuff by ear. My first few seasons marching I would use the mp3s our arranger sent out and then just watch the drummer next to me and referencing the sheets only for sticking. Worked alright for a while lol
@@MikeAvinMusic did you learn mallet percussion parts by ear too? if so that is impressive
@@lasagnajames I usually tried to avoid the mallet parts in concert band like the plague if I could lol but when I had to play mallets I listened to as many recordings as I could and then would figure it out note by note matching pitches as I heard them!
Oh man, the US always amazes me; you guys, kids at that time, played in huge stadiums for a massive audience, that's freaking cool!!
Long list I suck at:
Tenors
Long list I used to suck at:
Snare
I would love that challenge
Same
LMFAO, I have to play the conga part for African bell carol this school year. The music sheet is right in front of me right now.😂😂😂
You know, I haven't been in marching band for years, and I never marched in corps, but every time I watch your videos I miss marching :/ drum set is fun but I liked the amount of variety in ensembles I had in school
12:40 there had been a few times in our field show I just had to watch the our drum majors and tune out the pit cause we where so far back that sound travel became an issue.
1:51 don’t you mean “Coongas”
Nah. He means daddy bongos
one guitar, i mean one conga
That's craaazy that you were in Crown 2010! My brother was in high school marching band, and Crown was rehearsing at out school, and that's where I fell in love with band!!!
When your first instrument is the dreaded mallet percussion.
Ive been playing rock and heavy metal drums for 33 years. I learned the double stroke roll early on but always had trouble with singles. Till this day I suck at them. ty
Sometimes I overestimate how good I am, and sometimes I underestimate how good I am.
Hm good mindset
Ditto, it’s a super fun endless cycle of trying to balance my confidence ahah
My highschool band director was a percussionist herself growing up so percussion at my school was no joke. I miss marching now tbh. I played bass drum at first then tenors the rest of highschool
This quarantine has been giving me a lot of time to practice 😤 [This comment has 69 likes, so don’t like it anymore]
Same
True
Luke Cullen I haven’t touched my drums once 😭
@@antihypocrite510 same lol I just don't know what to practice
Same
This is totally random but your thumbnail is the rhythm from Nintendo Duck Hunt when you shoot a bird haha. First thing that came to mind when I "played" your thumbnail in my head.
When I started percussion I SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED at timpani
Same could never play loud enough in relation to the orchestra x
I just started high school and got snare. It’s awesome but I know that Some things we play I’m not very good at some parts. Mostly flams and paradiddles. But I’m gonna keep working on being better and practicing every day.
*I still suck at drums...*
Hit "C" for cymbal in the chat 😪
Aye I am in middle school and I love playing the marimba it is my best percussion instrument
i played the shaker during the time the concert band and wind symphony played the african bell carol. The people playing the bongos killed it!
This year I played congas in African Bell Carol and I got the solo! It was so much fun to ad lib the solo.
holy shit, in my 7th grade year we played African Bell Carol, THE SAME PIECE SAME COMPOSITION EVERYTHING, AND WE DID THE COMBINED 8TH AND 7TH BAND THAT IS SO WEIRD
I didn't know why the staging stuff was difficult. Now I'm in winter percussion, so I do
My band director helps the percussion section by using food words like at 0:54
She would say
"Straw-ber-ry, chili-dog, straw-ber-ry, chili-dog"
It just makes the percussion section hungry 😭😭 but it really does help because some percussionist like to say what they're playing but its harder to do that the faster you're going and the more complicated the rythms are so saying food just makes it a little easier in general
I wish I had a band director that allowed us to actually learn more, but every year we’re always playing the same exercises
That 5/8 section lol... I played euphonium but I remember it took a while to learn that.
For me it was the other way around. I could do Swiss army triplets fine but had trouble with flam accents.
I play saxophone for band too and I always wanted to play percussion but it seemed so hard
@@adrienne9962 yeah exactly man!! It’s rough haha, and I don’t even know how to start learning tenor at home. Right now just going through yt videos for snare and whatnot. If you have any tips that would be greatly appreciated lol.
@@pikameer8325 yeh, tenors are the thing I realllllly want to learn but I have no idea how to start so I’m basically doing the same thing you are. I’m starting off with the snare stuff and finding random things videos. What I really need to do first is learn how to read drum notation, because it’s hella different than a wind instrument lmaooo
ok my guy, I just joined percussion.
3:04 this is something I'm struggling with right now! Ugh the peice goes from Cut Time to 6/8 and back to cut time and it's annoying
When I was in 7th grade I played African bell carol but there were only two people who could play the bongo part lol I played crash cymbals and got literally 6 notes in the entire song XD the best part was I was first chair lol idk why I didn’t get the bongo part
fun fact: the picture of mallet percussion instruments at 5:48 is at the James Madison University Music Building, i've been in that room and have played those instruments many times
from uk... thanks for the video... its mad the USA and UK have absolutely the the same ways of teaching drums... nobody should be put off by the hours and hours of practice... my one and only teacher was ex-military... the sheet music was finite, but at the same time he allowed the mistakes... improvisation is key to developing you're own style and marching bands (so to speak) take it out of you... yet it builds the first building blocks to develop your own style... so many people ive taught just want to bash away... it doesn't work like that
thanks again, if you could do all that with footwork you'd be an absolute god!😄all the best
