Just brought this car today ... I owned 2 minis growing up in England loved them, moved to the states 5 years ago and after 2 Cars I owned ive come full circle and gone back to my old faithful mini, i love this model it’s so sporty!
Just want people to keep in mind that $39k price tag is due to added options in typical Mini (and BMW) fashion. A base Countryman S All 4 (and the base comes very well equipped) with just adding heated seats, extra cost paint and satellite radio is $33.5k. And if you just want the entry level Countryman w/o awd or upgraded engine you're around $28k. I love that Mini gives you options with colors, engines, transmissions and fwd or awd. "You're buying a legend, you're buying a tradition, you're buying fun!" - Awesome quote about buying a Mini. Usually not a huge fan of these crossovers but I like the job Mini did with this in retaining somewhat of the Mini look while not making it huge and sit up way high like other SUVs.
Drove the countryman as a loner, it’s a great car. I just love the fact I can park my hardtop S I spots I would never find with a bigger car. I always find a parking space in between peoples driveways and don’t have to keep looking.
I love my 2019 Countryman S All 4 - peppy and fun! I drove Volvo for 15+ years (98 & 2000 box-style) and had a tough time finding that sturdy feeling in any hatchback I tested. Love the Harmon Kardon sound as well! Vroom vroom!!!
Raiti, great videos and fantastic delivery. You hit the balance between personal opinion and professional journalist in a way that few can. Hats off and keep up the great work.
Minis are great fun, closer to a jet powered skateboard than just about any other vehicle. Just about any version is a hoot to drive. In addition one buys into a cult-like ownership experience in which Mini drivers still wave to one another on the highway and drive long distances for annual events. The Mini offers far more configuration options than any vehicle in its class with literally thousands of variations possible in each version. But that configurability comes at a significant cost. It's possible to layer on options that take the MSRP to well over $50,000 for a loaded JCW Countryman. The $40K MSRP of the model Joe is driving suggests Mini is hoping models with a limited number of popular options will improve sales. And his ad for the local Florida dealer suggesting a $4000 discount from that price illustrates just how dismal the sales figures are for Minis in 2019. In the first four months of 2018 Mini reported sales of all their models to be 14,264. A terrible number that reflects the lowest total yearly sales in 10 years! And 2019 is even worse. This year first 4 month sales are down to 11,532, a 19% drop compared to 2018. (carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/mini/) At $36K, or so the Countryman is not a bad deal versus comparable rivals like the Golf R, the Civic Type R, and what's likely to be the real world price of the Veloster N. That assumes, however, that it's not a loss leader price designed to draw customers into a showroom where they find that the last $36K model was "sold yesterday" but some other more expensive models are still available. I think MINIs are great cars. But unless the sales declines are reversed I suspect BMW may decide that tradition, funky design, and distinctiveness aren't worth the effort.
"I recant my zonk." LOL. great and fun review Joe. Mabey a little info on the sound systems in the cars you review? Great car,but like you said, a little more this and that for 40k would be appreciated.
It has to be in sport mode for you to get the pops in a mini Cooper. I believe the SE Countryman is the only one that doesn't. Great video& comments though..
This car could’ve been specced with more options for the same price point. The dealer just specced it with real leather seats which would’ve given you a leather armrest and rear armrest with cup holders.
I literally own the same car, color and everything. I live in Northeastern Ohio in the snow belt. This car dominates in the snow. It's a ton of fun to drive in the summer as well. It fits my golf clubs and can hold my bike with the MINI OEM bike carrier on the roof. I drove a 2DR Cooper S before this and while it lags a bit in pickup compared to the 2DR, it makes up for it with the AWD handling.
Great review Joe, love just how detailed your reviews always are 👍🏻 if you had to choose between the Mini Countryman S, Subaru Crosstrek limited or the Hyundai Kona limited, I’m in the market for a Sub compact SUV, these are 3 of my finals.....I think 🤔 LoL
I would love to have a Mini JCW but at 35K to 45K I just can not justify paying that much money besides the resale value of the Mini is no where as good as it was when they came out in 02-03.
You're better off buying them used anyway. Let the first owner pay for the depreciation because, well, they depreciate fast. That's how I ended up paying so little on my 2012 Mini!

You will never get the performance from a small SUV like you can get from Mini. That is why people buy it because it's different and they are fun to drive.
B B never said anything about performance, I said it was too small for me. There are several small SUV’s that will “out perform “ a Mini. For one, the Honda Passport has a V6 with 280HP. That’s more than the Mini. Sure, it may not handle as well as the Mini, but has more power and off road capabilities that the Mini just doesn’t have. So to say a small SUV will never get the performance you can get from a Mini is just not accurate.
My 2018 Subaru Forester XT Touring that cost 35.5 loaded with all the safety features and many accessories beats this. My Subie is fun to drive and much more practical.
William M Trexler actually claustrophobia is not a sensation I feel in my F56 Cooper S. It’s a bit of an enigma it looks small from the outside, but once you’re inside it feels completely different . I’m 5’ 10” and have plenty of room, the windshield is pretty far forward dual moon roofs and the most comfortable seats, even better that my A6 and my ML500, the Harmon Kardon sound system pretty excellent. It’s my toy car

So to say a small SUV will never get the performance you can get from a Mini is just not accurate.
@@LS1007 I agree and you made a good point.
B B thanks! I have nothing against the Mini’s, and you’re correct about them being different and I’m sure they’re fun to drive. ✌🏻🍻
They changed because bmw took them over 🤙🏾🤙🏾
AGREED!
Great car no doubt
My 2018 Subaru Forester XT Touring that cost 35.5 loaded with all the safety features and many accessories beats this. My Subie is fun to drive and much more practical.
Self assurance at its best :)
I just think..."Tonka Toy"...Death trap on US Roads...maybe Europe...They scare Me..."Minnie Me"...lol
Death trap? They are safety tested.
40K.....😱😱😱...This car will give you claustrophobia...if you didn't have it before...lol
Oh come on William. You are not going to feel claustorphobic in this Countryman. The price may give you an ulcer.
