John Peel again to the rescue, giving exposure to a band when no one else would. These Peels were recorded EIGHT months before their first single was released, Hong Kong Garden (8/18/78) Siouxsie, as well as the Slits, was one of the last of the '77 bands to be signed to a deal. They were turned down by at least five record labels and had to resort to spray painting SIGN SIOUXSIE NOW on record company buildings. Whether male chauvinism was at play here or merely bad judgement on the part of company executives is still a matter of conjecture. I believe both Siouxsie and the Slits in 1977 had a solid following at a grass roots level. Whatever the case may be, it again took John Peel to shine a light on a fine band unknown to the public. Siouxsie and the Banshees have had many hit records and singles down through the years and their career is too vast to be recounted here. Suffice to say these Peels showcase the first official steps of a very famous and highly influential band and as such are of immense importance. As usual, excellent sound on these Vibracobra23 posts.

Carl Fry agree 100% Growing up here in America I was pretty much unaware of John Peel. It was only after buying some of the sessions on vinyl and doing some research that I came to realize just what a treasure he was. Nothing of such a high level here in USA

without wanting to be controversial maybe the record companies thought the swastikas and the whole punk dirge crap was not worth investing in. there were enough female musicians about without resorting to claims that the record industry is sexist etc - enough male based bands couldnt get a look in, either... as for the banshees yeah i like them.. cool. i know another guy lives on same housing estate i grew up on and he raves about the band. as to whether he really loves the band i do not know... everyone sounds so unconvincing and insincere these days that one wonders if sarcasm maybe has had its day???? i've seen the colour photos etc... and then one wonders if those siouxsie images should have been winding their way to me????? for the record the swastika sutcliffe was wearing had a big red line running thru it emblazoned upon it read: nazi punks fuck off!!!!!

willieluncheonette I would add the Ants to the list of unsigned and championed by Peel bands of the time. It's an utter crime that they didn't get to record an album until Dirk, two years later. At least the Banshees did. The songs on the first two Banshees sessions sound sharper than the versions on the Scream.

Martin Fitzgerald - I had this session (and many others) recorded off-air back in the day, and played it death before they released anything official. I still prefer these to the studio versions as a result. Wonderful to hear these again, and in such good quality.

The band didn't do the spray painting , of course - it was 'organised'. And it was 'Sign The Banshees', not 'Sign Siouxsie', BTW.......
Otherwise, you're dead right above - the importance of this session cannot be overstated. I was not in a position to see SATB in '77, but the cassette recording I made of this session was hugely-treasured promise of what was to come.

Like a lot of these bands when the driving force of macay and Morris left the band lost a lot of vibrancy . I was privileged to see them with the original line up. One of the best gigs I ever saw. The Banshees were never the same after that.
