Live Performance "The Last Beat of My Heart"
Lollapalooza Music Festival
1991-08-28 King County Fairgrounds
Enumclaw, WA. United States
Lyrics:
In the sharp gust of love
My memory stirred
When time wreathed a rose
A garland of shame
Its thorn my only delight
War torn, afraid to speak
We dare to breathe
Majestic
Imperial
A bridge of sighs
Solitude sails
In a wave of forgiveness
On angels' wings
Reach out your hands
Don't turn your back
Don't walk away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
At the close of day
The sunset cloaks
These words in shadowplay
Here and now, long and loud
My heart cries out
And the naked bone of an echo says
Don't walk away
Reach out your hands
I'm just a step away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
'Til the last beat
'Til the last fleeting beat
Of my heart
This is the rare gold here on RUclips
My partner passed away in March, she was always a SATB fan and this track will always make me think of her. I was actually with her until the last beat of her heart.....
:(
I am sorry for your loss. Your story is touching. Hold on to your beautiful memories. ❤️☺️
Sorry to hear that😢 much love
Beautifully sorrowful.
Stay strong buddy.
No words can discribe what i´m feeling when i listen to this outstanding live performance!
I swear there are days when Jon Klein can easily pass for an extra-terrestrial tourist on our little planet. So grateful he was able to spend a few years with the Banshees. (and thank you for your work on "Love Out Me")
@xplodngboy
you are great !I'm 28 right now and I hope to have a marriage and a siouxsie-life like yours!
All that is good in the world, all that is right, can be seen in this.
Yeah I love it.
Thank you Casey

TR,Mk:Bitches
I like that bobble head move she did at the beginning 😁
Who cares about what annoys you! My opinion is that this live is better. PS: I have almost all of their records. I love them. This makes me a true fan WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Grow up!
This is one of the rare occurences where the live performance is better than the studio recording. Absolutely superb.
Only the best bands do that.
Thank you!!
this was played at the funeral of my youngest sister(49 jr),she was a big fan of siouxie, and also a pictures of you by The Cure
Deus a tenha, chorei ao ler esse post. Mas essa música é uma manifestação divina, e isso é muito lindo, sua irmã tá em paz.
It would be nice if this song is played on my funeral too...
😭
This is one of the most moving posts I have ever read. This really is a beautiful song.
++++1 very very special and beautiful
I, and several of my friends, were lucky enough to witness this very show. It was a truly magical moment. When she hushed the crowd, it was like a strong, sudden breeze, and the crowd fell silent. You could have heard a pin drop on that muddy field in the rain. Just breathtaking.
Thank you for posting this! I've waited more than two decades to see this again.
You lucky sod
it rained in Orlando too...lovely memory!
I wish I was able to go but I was only 15 / 16 at the time. That would have been a highlight for me seeing her perform.
It is so SO beautiful
Dryghten Shahara I was there too!! An absolutely AMAZING show and weekend!!
I was lucky enough to have this cd signed by her. She noticed I had a complicated knee brace on. She “said, you’ve hurt your leg”. I burst into tears when we left. “Siouxsie noticed my leg”.
She and the band were so influential upon my life.
Siouxsie is one of the nicest person I have met....when she toured as the creatures inmet her when she did an interview at 99.1 hfs in DC ...and she invited us to tower records for the promotional signing of the new album...we got in line just like everyone else ..and she greeted us like old friends ....a few months later we saw them at the 930 club in DC and she remembered us ....we were amazed ....and then one of the merchandise sellers invited us to the next show ....we ended up seeing them in DC/ philly / Boston / providence / Chicago/ and Detroit ....we slept on the tour bus ...and they always made sure we had a place to park my car between the bus and truck....she gave me memories that I will never ever forget ......so siouxsie and budgie have a very special place in my life ..... Saw the deal made for the Depeche mode tour ..and got guest listed for the entire tour even though we weren't able to make most of the shows but we did an after party with them...we ended up meeting and going to amny other shows but none can ever compare to Siouxsie.....
I think she is amazing.for you to actually have met her wow I truly envy you and hope your recovery went well ❤️
I would not have made it thru my teenyears without those guys🙏❤️❤️❤️
I consider this song the best love song ever written. It's fucking brilliant.
It leaves an impression, that's for sure
Correct.
Yes it is
This particular song presented by this particular grouping at this time .... Fucking Fucking Brillant.
there's been a 'lot' a views since my fir t view..... god knows what the future holds: my guess ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++>
Been into the Banshees since 79. Discovered this 3 weeks ago and can't STOP listening to this version. Like a drug to me.
I heard this version first in the 90s on a complication tape. I kinda like it better than original.
This live version is awesome, Siouxsie is a natural singer, with such power in her vocals. Despite what my kids say, modern music is disposable crap.
With no rehab in sight
It’s probably the best Banshees song ever and that takes some beating ❤️
I saw this tour in Los Angeles and they opened with this. It was pitch black dark. She just came out to a spotlight with that beautiful 1920’s bob she wore at the time
One of my favorite live performances. By anyone ever. This is just sublime.
This song gets stuck in my head and drives me nuts, and then I get super annoyed, about it because it won't go away and then I pull it up on RUclips and watch it again. And the cycle continues. lol
Agreed, the hairs on the back of my neck have been going up for 30 odd years with this track.
I love Siouxsie. Her phrasing is unique and incredible. She takes words that no one else could put together and puts them together Beautifully! Not to mention that voice! And to watch this Beauty live, well...
and no one could pull off using "whilst" in lyrics like her.
There are some performers you just cannot divert your attention from, she is one.
Well said. She's incredible.
She's hypnotic!
💜💜💜
I call her my forever crush. It’s been 35 years since I first heard Tinderbox…so yeah
@@diegodeaduriz That's right
I think many of these strong, unique female singers, Blondie, Alison Moyet, Siouxsie, Tracey Chapman, Tori Amos....have all shaped me as a moral rebel.
These women kicked ass and because if them, I refuse to be a victim and speak my mind.
Thanks Siouxsie for being your primal, authentic self.
Glad to hear that as in today's world being primal and authentic is frowned upon as an ugly regression. :)
aMeN MK13
If you're looking for a true female rebel I think Sinead O'Connor is more than all those you mentioned combined.
Brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it.
same here.
Ah sh** me too
ditto
Me too
very rare that i prefer live over studio but here we are
same here, but check out Monitor - seven year itch live. crazy good
same here live version totally better
Siouxie is fierce. A strong woman with presence I admired her In my teen years and up, always thought she was cool and pretty and had a beautiful voice and she could dance and had "presence." My mom was like that but just passed away 7/20/23. She fought hard and long with Parkinsons under our care at home no help. This song helps a lot. ❤❤❤❤
Al igual que tu madre, tú eres una mujer hermosa y con presencia.
Ella siempre estará junto a ti.
Gracias por compartir este recuerdo íntimo.
Te deseo lo mejor en tu vida. ❤
Thank you for such kind encouraging words. I am touched. ❤ I wish you the best too.
Just stunning. What a voice, what a beautiful woman, what a performer
Brilliantly vulgar with a twist of class
ICONIC
I agree.
She seems to sing in unpredictable notes and melodies ,
it throws some listeners off but when you hear it in your head and heart it's like one of the most beautiful original things you ever experience
Siouxsie has come from young punk to iconic legend, in 30 years of creative genius. There's not one track in her full repertoire, that can be described as poor. Moody, mean and magnificant........all hail the queen of the dark side.............
I saw this show twice at Shoreline Amphitheater. She was the best act on the lineup. She’s a huge personality and a creative artist. I never thought those times would end.
Simply pure beauty and so angelic her voice is. This song sends shivers up my spine. I love you Siouxsie
This performance is one of the crowning achievements of her (and Budgie's) career. Could have done without the twat in the hat though.
21 persons who gave a hands down need to check their pulse...
😆😆😆
Could only be in honour of Siousxie pointing her hand down
This beats studio version. Don't get me wrong... I love the studio one, but this is perfect!
I totally agree with you!!
yes it is magnificent! gives me chills especially the very end with her howling voice bringing the sound to a close! wow!
+Lennox1492 not to mention this was the first song on the set list to open up a show. The way she hushed the audience was amazing.
This song is considered usually a closer, but they opened up with it.. Pure magic. I was there back in the day at lollapalooza and she was amazing
Duke Togo I don't like this song. I prefer Cities in dust as a closer
equally perfect...ok???
This live perfomence and the song is just unbelievably beautiful
"The Last Beat of My Heart" is a song written, produced and recorded by English rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was released in late 1988 as the third and final single from the band's ninth studio album Peepshow.
The song is a ballad with strings and accordion. Sioux's vocals address a lover who is leaving a relationship, as she asks for him to return to her. She declares her desire to be "close to you til the last beat of my heart".
The single was described in a review as "a swirling, smouldering masterpiece which will capture your ticker within the first few moments and hold it fluttering in awe. With a ghostly accordion adding to the building power, Siouxsie's hypnotic voice is just unnerving enough to delight. A true gem."
Several musicians later praised the song. DeVotchKa covered it on their 2006 EP Curse Your Little Heart and The Decemberists qualified it as one of their favourite Siouxsie and the Banshees songs.[1] The Flowers of Hell released a version on their 2012 album Odes, on which they cover their influences.[2]
"The Last Beat of My Heart" reached number 44 in the UK singles chart in December 1988. Upon its inclusion on the 1992 compilation album Twice Upon a Time: The Singles, a live recording of the song from 1991 replaced the single version.
Joshua Meyer I think this is the version included in Twice Upon a Time.
Deserved top twenty.
One of the greatest love songs ever written and it didn't even make top 40. Damn.
How in holy frick did I survive 26 years of life before seeing this?
dunno
Right!?
because you are milennial
delafucci lol. Actually, one would think being a millennial and having such one touch resources these days would only enhance access to songs like this... not like it used to be
Welcome to The Happy House ( or what's left of it), and remember , it's better later than never. Always follow the real druids...
Wow !! What a performance. Besides her beautiful voice, she has a magnetic presence on stage and in front of cameras.
Hypnotic
a love song for those who doesn't belive in love anymore... simply beautiful
this is a live recording of a legend. Lucky to see and hear it.
And she's beautiful beautiful beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤
+dmccxp So are you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Goddess
This live performance -- not the original 1988 album cut -- was what made it onto the Twice Upon a Time singles CD in 1992.

Afraid to speak, we dare to breathe

Maybe presumtuous on my part... but; I'd like to think Byron and Yeats would give a (now skeletal) thumbs up.
The dissolution of my marriage was one of the most painful chapters in my life, but what made it less brutal was listening to this song, along with so many other beautiful works by Siouxsie and the Banshees. This band and their extraordinary works have always been a true source of comfort for me. I am so grateful.
it's like I am waiting for her to tell me to breathe
Almost 28 years ago to the day...still one of the most profound performances of this song, or any other by anyone
That is one of the best things on RUclips. Period.
god what a woman
I was at this event...right in front. It was AMAZING.......so magical.
You lucky devil!!
You’re SO LUCKY! I was just a kid, but always loved this version of the song
This is all kinds of glorious. Stunning.
At her peak of perfection, this.
I remember this! I cried because it was magical. I love you Siouxsie!
My 6´ years old daughter made a rapid judgement: She is sooooo beautiful (but not like Mum) !
I saw them on this tour (lollapalooza) in Atlanta. It was a sweltering day and they had the early evening slot as the sun was setting. The sunset was beautiful and they had so much awesome energy coming off the stage. They blew every band away with their awesomeness.
Siouxisie carries an extra heavy load being so incredibly talented and ravishingly beautiful. I wouldn't care if she was ugly as sin, because what comes from her mouth and her mind is ravishingly beautiful. And the banshees are immensely innovative, and bring it all to life, especially Budgie's atypical drumming.
SO very true. The Banshees are brilliant. I never forget that's. Even if half of Them are not here in the video.
Thanks for this kind and lovely words to S.S.!!!i seen her in Bologna 1982 .my girlfriend loved her and we go to the open air concert.today i see this beautyful and gorgeous woman, and love her too...
I've watched this vid maybe two thousand times. This time I realized she has the ability to be looking right at you whilst she's singing.
Favorite version! She looks great in the astral-goth Chiquita Banana outfit and relatively minimal eye paint...
Chiquita banana!!! 😂
She’s gorgeous. My forever crush for the past 35 years
Boy can she sing did the pistols no who was standing behind them with that Granada interview well done girl
I get the sense that the crowd weren't really expecting this, and just kind of stared open-mouthed at what they were hearing.
Absolutely correct! For me, It was spiritual. One has to remember that this is from Lollapalooza . And we had been rocking & dancing all day to bands like NIN, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band , Living Color, etc.
I remember she came on at dusk, opened with this beautiful song and I lost my mind! I was so overwhelmed with emotions, that I broke down in tears. I cried like my Mother did for Elvis or as young girls did for the Beatles.
It was magical.
@@brianperry4713 I have only just discovered this. I watched it last night and sobbed my heart out.... I 've just watched it again 5 mins ago and the same thing happened. I,m a middle aged man and do not cry very often at .... this such is such a powerful song and performance for releasing trapped emotions, I do belive that.
Came across this fairly recent myself, and I concur. Good to be in touch with our emotions, we're human after all ;(
I'm not sure which venue this was filmed in. I was at the Washington state
show that year in Enumclaw (near Seattle). It was just as
you said. Completely unexpected. I was blown away!
I saw the Los Angeles show and was blown away by this.
Avalon's daughter. Her soul is ancient. She is best child of her Soil.
Siouxie is a Queen of Avalon Islands. She is our Sister. What I mean "our"? I am a proud Slavic Man. I am a son of thousands years old ancestors. And I can feel Hers Avalon soul. Couse Avalon children and Slavics are the same.
We are prehistoric and connected.
That's why the Siouxie and the Banshees is beloved in Poland!
P.S. Siouxie in polish means: Zuzia.
this is one of the best songs ever written i'd have this played
at my funeral if i was having one
love this cant believe this is the only recording of the live, if anyone can find another please share
I love this performance so much it feels as if my heart is about to break. Though it's filled with happiness. Oh, Siouxsie, you really are one heavenly creature!
Incredible version.
I saw Siouxsie in concert twice and, around the early 90s, this is how they started each show - completely awesome!
As lovely as the studio version is, this is better.
She has more talent than all the Sex Pistols combined could ever dream of having.
the absolute best version of this song ever recorded
Wow, this is so good in many ways. So glad it got recorded.
Her performance is so cool and perfect at the same time. What a unique and beautiful voice. First and number one gothic girl.
"MAJESTIC, IMPERIAL...i see this video and still get the shivers down my spine. live is just as good as the record version. Siouxsie would definitly be the Goth QUEEN, Goth GODDESS, for then, for now, and for always. like Betty Boop she will retain her beauty for all of time, till the last beat of my heart...
Never remove this video 🙂
Every time I listen to that song it almost makes me cry. It's so awesome.
This is THE best version of this song ever 💖
Siouxsie opened with this very song November 4th or 5th 1989 at the Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood, California. My very good friends chipped in and bought me my ticket for my birthday(bonfire night) My first concert of my own volition.
PRESENCE
one of the most painfully exquisite works of art that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.. she truly has a voice of the seraphim.
1.000.000 times love if I could. Blows the studio version right out of the water. We were robbed of this in Toronto though. The band did not play this one at Lollapalooza.
Why wasn't this entire show filmed???? Why???
Seriously, where is the rest of the gig?
Been meaning to comment on this for about 10 years !!absolutely stunning in every sense ..words fail me
She’s a flawless being
This song and this performance gets me every single time. Fucking amazing. I was privileged to see Siouxie in a concert in Chicago back in early 90's. I'll never forget it.
AntiDot70 Wow
Norma Di Pardo ;)
AntiDot70 I've never been to a real concert. Just a few bands not as important as this one
Norma Di Pardo Aww... but through a magic of RUclips, now you can see every band you could only dream of. I grew up in a tiny forgotten town in a middle of nowhere. Little did I know what life was cooking up for me. Keep your hopes up. Dreams do come true. just be patient, hard working, and never give up.
AntiDot70 Thanks.
Hey do you have a facebook?
Bless your heart Siouxsie Sioux for making such beautiful masterpieces...
0:55 "shut the fuck up people" lol
0:55
Shen sent them all to shut the fu""" at 0:56 in a very diva way (as she is) I fucking luv her she's my godess!!
0:56
That is stage presence. Doesn’t move a lot, sings the same way she does on record, and her first action is to shush the audience. And yet everyone is so immersed, because she has such carisma and a great voice. The Last Beat of My Heart is my favorite Siouxsie song and this my favorite version of it.
Magic. Just magic.
One of the last remaining few pieces of beautiful music combined with lyrical mastery that RUclips hasn't deleted.... yet.
March of Love! Mesmerizing, perfect!
Best band EVER
When McKay left the band followed by McGeoch RIP..... They just weren't the Banshees anymore... Imo after 1981 they became decidedly boring....
You're boring. Too bad, your loss
@@gmantramp404
I think Tinderbox is a great album..i like the period with Carruthers at the guitar.
Anyway, the first five album must reign, are the best of the band..😎😎😎😎😎
After this, some good songs..this one is awesome, not boring.
Tinderbox was awesome. Peepshow had something but yeah. It kind of ended there. Kind of like The Cure and Wish
amazing performance................brilliant siouxsie.......black and white but heart full of colours.....
My tears start falling every time I hear this song
If thats you in profile pic? I'm in love with you luv 💙
Jesus, this is so good that I can barely take it.
Siouxsie was not the reason I went to this show in 1991 but damn, they made an impression. They were sandwiched between Janes and Living Colour - very loud bands. But after all these insane artists - Rollins, the Buttholes, NIN, they managed to kill it. The crowd loved them.
I always wondered how they were received in general. If I could go back, the concert I'd go to is Lollapalooza 91.
So many of my favorite(Siouxsie, Jane's, Butthole Surfers)
This looks transcendent and her voice is in supreme condition
80-90's are the height of humanity and especially music! this is one example!
Ommg
If I could of just been there!
one of the most beautiful song of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and one of the most beautiful song ever.
Damn ! What a beautiful song ! Siouxsie's live singing here is testament to her talent & skills. Not every singer can be on tour and sound this great ! Still hoping they get back together for one last hurrah !
Most people don't need much. They simply follow the herd. I really envy them.
Siouxsie is the Queen! That or a gypsy princess. One of those songs I have been listening to every day for whatever reason.
Lollapalooza, was a great springboard for alternative music, one month later, Nirvana's Smells like teens spirit was launched to the world and changed the face of rock music. Lollapalooza showed that alternative music could potentially draw a huge audience in stadiums. The Banshees playing in front of 45000 persons this anthemic song -what a brilliant ballad The Last Beat Of My Heart is, was kind of incredible
