Saw them twice in 1985 in the SFX Dublin and once in Munich late 80's but as much as I love the banshees there is always a rawness to the early years that cannot be replicated. This performance and another on the German show Rockpalast encapsulate the pure tingling euphoria that were the Banshees. Thanks for posting such a treasure. Everything about this performance is just perfect, setlist, visual and sound just so uniquely superb. Acknowledgment must also be given to the unsung heroe Severin whose bass lines were always so appropriate and flawlessly delivered. We were all lucky to grow up in such a golden era, wealthy we were not but we were rich in so many other ways!
No one ever talks about Robert Smith with the Banshees. Obviously they were never the same after John left but Robert was GREAT and after he left they were never as good! The first three guitar players were all amazing even if one may have stood out the most to a lot of people. Severin thank god was always there!

I loved the fact that I could say, "I want this to sound like a horse falling off a cliff," and he would know exactly what I meant.“ RIP John McGeoch
I was fortunate enough to see John five times while with PIL, absolutely incredible. The song “Worry” had the crowd going crazy, will always remember that performance.
I saw them on this tour at Derby Assembly Rooms and remember vividly them playing with clouds flying behind them on a screen. Made them seem as they where flying. It was quite an effect with the music. They where stunning.
@@beetleything1864 100% and full force not only 'Banshees' level but punk level in spirit at a time that no-one from the actual punk years was going anywhere near.
No one can acuse them of being like any other band up to that point. That is a top notch light show a moderately successful band in 1981. The venue seems really nice.
Filmed in my home City, Nottingham. Rock City on a Saturday night was the place to be for alternative music. A small venue but that's what made it perfect for live music, everyone was close to the bands.
1981... I was 16 and I used to listen to Siouxsie... she was... mh... Who cares? Israel is a song I'd like to cover once in my life... pumping it up very loudly I guess...
Was never a huge fan. I had a greatest hits package Once Upon a Time, a 12' Arabian Knights then got the album mid 80s with Candyman on. Yet nearly 40 years on here I am marvelling at how good they were. Haunting guitar, haunting voice,..spellbinding
Having seen more bands there than anywhere else and it being my go to club venue for more years than I care to remember, I know Rock City like the back of my hand and so I'm confident in saying that there's NO WAY on God's green earth that the venue on that video is Rock City!
Fabulous. I was at this (if it is Rock City 22/08/81*) and the Derby Assembly rooms gig the night before. Aged 17. Still a joy to listen to. * some people doubting it's rock city in the comments and I'm wondering the same tbh
This was at the Theatre Royal as part of the Rockstage series for ITV. I was at the front of the stalls at the right hand side- the polecat’s supported.
They were crazy to sack John, they should have given him time to sort his issues out. But, they had a tour to do and got Robert Smith back in, the door was then closed I guess.
The amount of time someone needs to recover from a nervous breakdown isn’t set and his problems were based in alcoholism and substance abuse, which needed to be addressed too. Considering he died at 48, it seems like a struggle he never overcame.
I suspect she was mimicking Siouxsie's look in the "Arabian Knights" promo video & that's why the camera panned to her during that song. The Banshees were a truly formidable studio band & live band at this time. I remember watching this on concert on tv, way back when it was originally aired & am sure that (Off the top of my head) "Night Shift" & "Voodoo Dolly" were also part of the broadcast & possibly other songs..

Siouxsie wrote the strings to 'Dazzle' on a toy piano. That's pretty impressive. Don't forget singers with bands often create the vocal melody over the chords they're given. Debbie Harry is another underrated co-songwriter. Yes, there are many pretty girls who are told to _sing what they're told to sing_ but there are others who are much more creative than they're given credit for.
McGeoch. Their most iconic work was done while he was on guitar. Kaleidoscope, Juju, A Kiss In the Dreamhouse........
Proud to have seen this line up several times, McGeoch absolute legend.
John McGeoch is one of the ten best in history, and the Banshees were at there best during that time...awesome!
i guess it is pretty off topic but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released series online?
@Nikolai Coen meh I use flixportal. You can find it through google =) -edwin

Absolutely awesome. Siouxsies voice is unbelievable people forget how many hits they had in the 80's A hugely influencial band. ❤❤
