- What ever happened to the Hulk sequel? No, not the Incredible Hulk starring Ed Norton, or not anything to do with Mark Ruffalo’s version of the character. I’m talking about 2003’s Hulk directed by Ang Lee. It starred Eric Bana as Bruce, and featured a strong supporting cast like Jennifer Connelly, Sam Eliot, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte. The film itself was a pretty sizable hit, but it still struggled to break even with its marketing costs. It was also incredibly divisive which didn’t help matters at all when it came to a sequel.
Reading lots of interviews, you find that there were indeed plans to make a second film in this continuity, but a lot of outside forces got in the way, especially when Marvel wanted to make their own Incredible Hulk film. Today will be a discussion about the canceled Hulk sequel, why it failed, what it could have done right, and what it means overall for the future. Does Eric Bana have an opportunity to come back and fight someone like Ruffalo? Would Bana’s Hulk ever become Maestro? ALl great questions and all will be answered after checking out this video!
So join me as I talk all about this new format regarding the Unmade Sequel for Hulk 2003. The Incredible Hulk (Norton’s) was the best and most comic accurate we’ve gotten to date. I’m hoping he’ll show up in the Secret Wars or something

The thing about 2003 Ross is that unlike the MCU that is obsessed with the hulk and even remaking it with Erskine's super soldier serum to be more powerful by MCU's Bruce Banner, the 2003 one is the complete opposite and is against the idea of hulk even being experimented in the first place as he even discussed this with Betty when atheon took control of hulks containment that they are going to be profiting and make lots of money and he despises that as he still feels something and guilty for Bruce as he is the one that threw him away and a collateral and so the maestro route is out of the question entirely.
And another added bit of fact is when this was first proposed to him by Bruce's dad, he rejects it as it violates human rights whereas the MCU Ross doesn't care about said human rights.
That's true but Betty does state the only reason Ross had not killed Bruce was the militaries desire to weaponize it.
So tho he rejected David's experiments hated him and subsequently his son he saw the potential of an American government hulk
@dobi287 I don't think so. Talbot went behind his back and Ross was pressured into the situation. He's a general, but he still answers to people.
That version was actually the nice version of Ross but that's probably because it was a different time for example it was actually 1996 in that movie when the Hulk was born it was 1966 when his father started the experiments even though he was told to stop
Good points, and honestly, I think David Banner was a way more complex villain. I think a small part of him actually did love his son, as we see him in tears on the floor after seeing the Hulk for the first time, seeing what the experiments he conducted on himself had unintentionally did to his son, however because of his mental instability, he soon lost that and became all obsessed with gaining his son's power no matter the cost.
Abomination, well, he was the typical, violent and sadistic villain who just loved to create destruction and chaos because he could.
Sam Elliott's Ross was way better than the late William Hurt's Ross, is because you can see that deep down he is actually a decent man, as in how he gently tries to comfort little Bruce as his dad is dragged away, and how he is shown to have remorse when he feels he has killed Bruce at the end, and we see the compassion for his daughter knowing the heartbreak she went through as a result.
WH's Ross on the other hand seemed to be pure power hungry, and willing to sacrifice his daughter's happiness and potentially even well-being, in order to get what he wanted, even if he hadn't intended for his daughter to be hurt.

Eric Bana as Maestro would be awesome! I've been wondering about that for a good while, despite his saying he doesn't wanna return. Kang recruiting Maestro, other evil versions of the Marvel Studios characters would be awesome!
I imagined that Talbot was able to survive the explosion. Atheon scientists could do experiments with Bruce's DNA or his father's research on recreating a super-soldier. Talbot, now confined to a wheelchair and horrible burns, was obsessed with getting revenge on Bruce and could have become the Abomination

Eric Bana has already said he isn't interested in returning to his hulk role i think he was offered to reprise his role at one point but turned it down

The Incredible Hulk is one of the best, with Edward Norton. I love Ang Lee's Hulk movie and matter of fact I'm going to rewatch tonight. The MCU's Hulk in Avengers and Ragnarok is great but it went all downhill with what fans want. It's not that I dont like him. It's just I want the savage hulk we all want
at this point the terrible cgi of the 2003 hulk is still better then the terrible cgi of the disney plus she hulk tv show

As a matter of fact I'm trying to make my own version of the series right now actually I figured if no one is going to do it then I will since the last version of the Hulk went down the toilet almost literally I figured you might as well start back from the 2003 movie and work my way up from there and if you want to join in on the fun you're more than welcome to
I don't know about the Gray Hulk I was never a big fan of him but the rest of the story looked great

Ooooooh, I love the sequel idea you end on here! It would be so interesting to see another Hulk movie that draws off the choppy film history of the character. I would definitely watch it--I might even brave movie theatres again for it, ha.
It would’ve been amazing to see The Leader and Abomination brought to the big screen for the first time

Okay, so I am already tired of Kang, BUT Kang going around and gathering evil versions of the heroes to fight the good versions is actually a great idea.

Smart hulk with become the maestro. Maestro believes he is saving the world no other hulk cares making banner revert back to a Savage beast undermines all the work bruce did but having his personality change because of the extra gamma he got from The infinity gauntlet works. Because maestro personality was change because of extra gamma from a gamma bomb.
I’d love to see future imperfecto with Ruffalos hulk being called to a multiverse by a friend (sadly Norton wrote out Rick jones in the Incredible Hulk) but he sees the maestro and he leads the revolt against him.

As someone who does not have a problem with Smart Hulk (at least in Endgame), I definitely want to see Savage Hulk return
I'd wager the Hulk sequl was aiming for Maestro anyway. The inclusion of Gray Hulk would have served a larger purpose, and in the comics that turned out to be making his darker traits a part of Maestro's personality.
The fact that the first movie's villain was an abusive father also would have worked perfectly with Maestro being the final villain. It's Bruce confronting a version of himself that became cruel like his dad, something he never wanted to be.

I always looked at Incredible Hulk as a sequel to Hulk
Yeah Eric Bana Hulk Could Come back as the Maestro it would be Symbolic as in The Hulk 2003 Movie Failed at a Sequel now they could Say that Sam Elliot General Ross caused World War 3 in Trying to Destroy the Hulk and Hulk Failed to Protect His World and Betty Ross so he Became the Maestro and Now Rules his Version of a Post Apocalyptic Earth.
The Incredible Hulk is a decent movie but even if that movie didn't happen it wouldn't really affect me on a personal level, but I can't lie and not say that it's interesting to see how these versions of the characters are approached and developed, it's debatable whether a Hulk 2 would've affected a reboot version of the Hulk for the MCU but I really don't think it would have because Ang Lee's Hulk doesn't have any connection to the MCU universe so a reboot would've happened regardless
But for me the definitive version for Bruce Banner has always been Eric Bana, he always had the perfect look and personality portrayal for the character and the Hulk not only resemble Bana's facial features but it's the best looking Hulk model in my opinion, Lee's version of the characters and story are what I found to be perfect, just like how Batman Begins was the movie that many Batman fans wanted to see be adapted on-screen, Hulk is the movie that I've always wanted to see happen in the way of a Hulk movie, a dark and gritty character-driven style that explores the trauma and psychological aspects of Banner like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it saddens me that Hulk 2 was dropped because of how much Lee's movie means to me, the political edge seemed like a nice touch as well and the Grey Hulk idea sounded very cool

Now that we are in the Multiverse Saga they Could Either do a Sequel in the Ang Lee Hulk Universe or we could see the Character in Deadpool 3 and Secret Wars, I Would Love to see Eric Bana and His Hulk back in Deadpool 3 and Secret Wars and it Could Work.
What you describing? Isn’t that kinda what we got anyway? It just made the hulk smaller, and added old Incredible Hulk information isn’t of the creation of Ang Lee’s Hulk.

Bruce being emotionally reclusive is kinda the point of 2003 Hulk. He saw his father kill his mother in front of him. I don't really expect a character to crack jokes every 5 minutes or be "entertaining" after experiencing that. Especially after his trauma manifests itself into the monster, and several times it shows how deep his trauma affects his mental state. It's the same reason I don't trash on Anakin Skywalker's wooden acting in the movies, cause he is a man affected by the trauma of slavery, seeing the Jedi he looked up to treating him like a slave, and his anger taking over causing him to slaughter a village full of Tusken Raiders because of his mother's death. The point of 2003 Hulk isn't some badass cgi fight, but moreso Bruce coming to terms with his trauma and trying to overcome it.
Instead of a sequel kang should go and get the 2003 hulk from that universe and all of there hulks and cause that time line to be destroyed like I hope they do with the fox universe and then 2003 hulk is maestro and kang can recruit newtons hulk from another timeline and have that universe and the 2003 hulk universe collide and be destroyed and then kang brings them into the mcu for our hulk to fight and maybe even have those 2 hulks involved in world war hulk set up by kang the conquer
Idk if it’s been said already or be read but the hulk 2003 video game would’ve been the perfect sequel as a movie because he would’ve been tricked into leaving South America thinking he had a potential cure then once they took some of his power to use he had to fight to get it back and destroy it just like the game just maybe not as many boss villains in the movie but that would’ve been a very cool movie to see hulk dogs and hulk henchmen fighting the hulk

The political undertones of the sequel would've been refreshing at that time, and I'm crestfallen that we never got to see it.
I could see it being a political thriller with elements of body horror and the tone of the 2003 movie, and plenty more action.

I had great expectations for this 2003 movie when I knew it was coming out. I wasn't as thrilled when I saw it. Was a sequel a possibility, I don't know. It left it wide open with possibilities. Had a second movie happened, does the Ed Norton film even get made? Jump now 20 years later, and we see that it is still a possibility that they could revive it and be separate from the MCU. The problem is nobody really knows how to do a good Hulk film and probably never will.
Ang Lee knew how to make a good Hulk movie.
