Updated our Dodge Ram 1500 (2016) from 18.11 to 18.45. What was key was that there are two USB ports on this truck. One on the passenger side of the front console near the radio. The other is INSIDE of the arm rest console. The USB drive was NOT recognized until put into the arm rest console. Didn't know that until I saw your video. Some general differences were that the truck did not turn off at the end of the update. Also I plugged the USB into the arm rest console USB and then turned on the truck. Screen immediately went to the update information. No having to go into the Uconnect settings.
Thank you sir! Your video was spot on. Not only did following it to a “T” correct my GPS navigation not working anymore but a multitude of other bugs I wasn’t even aware of. This includes my volume on the stereo. Much better now. I used your video to update my ram to the 18.45 software. My truck is healthy again with out paying the dealer half a year’s wages. Thanks again!
Thank you, Marion! Your video and directions are so much clearer and so much more helpful than the manufacturer! It was a simple procedure, thanks to you!
I just want to thank you for sharing the video. they were asking for $296.81 at the dealership, just for the update. I really wouldnt have forgiven myself if i paid that amount, because it was so easy this way. I was able to upgrade my radio thanks to you!
Nice tutorial Mr. Blair. Made the process as painless as it can be. My 2017 Rebel is running in the driveway right now processing the downloads. Cheers!
This helped me a lot !!! I was very confused at first on how and where to extract it but watching this vide got the job done THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was going to get charged $135 by the Chrysler dealership
Thanks for this! I was able to update my Ram 3500 from 16.13.13 to 17.11.07 Then to 18.45.01_My13-17. I did have to do a factory reset after the 17.11.07 update as the Rear View Camera was washed out as you experienced. Other than the time, it all went pretty smoothly.
GREAT video. Thank you for covering the download to USB so thoroughly. I had missed a couple of steps and this cleared all of my problems right up. Thank you!
thanks had a bunch of problems until i watched your video ( the key is in the extraction/destination of the zipped file) your method is the only procedure that seems to work thanks
My radio didn’t do the wash out or have the loading bars as yours did. Also I press yes when it asked me if I wanted to update and it did the 35 second count down and the radio turned off and back on but not the truck. Hope I did it all right - I know I did the computer and USB the right way for sure.
I've had my ram going for a year now and haven't been able to use my Bluetooth so I've been dealing with just listening to the noise on the radio stations... My phone will connect to the truck and then about 20 seconds later it kicks me out and doesn't connect. I'm going to try and see if update works ...
Marion. Thank you for your help. My question; I have a Ram 2012 1500 Laramie Longhorn with Uconnect and Navigation. Would I be able to update my Ram's navigation maps; I could certainly use this fix. Thank you for your response.
I have a 2017 Dodge Ram Rebel that came with the Uconnect 8.4. However, I also have an I-phone and miss the apple car play feature I had previously. Have you or know how to add a conversion without having to replace the entire system.
I've had a problem with my navigation since I've upgraded to the recent update I have a 2017 dodge challenger and my radio freezes a lot since I've done this update.
My vehicle is Ram 1500 2016 and I have checked on the site but it's showing that no update is available. the current Uconnect version is 16.09.09. What is the way to update to Uconnect 8.4?
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I have a 14 ram 2500 tradesman edition. Recently, like a week or so ago I had to replace both batteries which went well. Now my Sirius radio says “no service contact dealer” and isn’t working at all. Any suggestions on what to do, and I did call sxm to no avail.
I know that you can reset the radio by pressing the volume and tune button in both at the same time, when you let them go it will reset the radio. It's a long shot. There's also a factory reset which you perform by entering the engineer's menu. Pressing the AC's up and down arrows at the same time will put you in the menu.. One of the options is a factory reset. I've never tried it, I heard it works on some issues but I don't really know so don't go by me. I'm going to talk to Uconnect tomorrow about the factory reset. I would recommend calling them about this issue as they can be very helpful. The factory reset supposedly wipes out all your setting and restore everything to original..
Hope this makes the radio not turn on by itself when I have it on mute. Did I see on the Dodge website that you had to pay for the new Navigation upgrade?
Yes, $150. I'll order it tomorrow. It seems like the update is washing out my backup camera. Lost some contrast. I read there is a reset fix but I'm going to talk to Uconnet tomorrow before I screw with it. I'll see about that first and then order the update.
There are issues with this update as my backup camera was washed out and had no contrast. I fixed it with the factory reset. See my followup video ruclips.net/video/9cwaCMI-l_4/видео.html for the fix. I suspect Uconnect is going to have to send another update to fix this update ha. But reset to factory reset did it for me.
Your tutorial was very informative, however I am still unable to update my radio in my 2015 Jeep renegade. I either get files not supported or files not authenticated.
Should someone use the VIN of a higher class vehicle, say a 2017 model and it was downloaded and then flashed into an older model with the 8.4 screen would that then allow the older model to be able to use the newer software?
Good info again. My truck took the “over the air” update and I noticed the update on my radio is a higher number, (17.11.17) - has Uconnect said anything about different updates based on how it is done? Also, not sure if you noticed but the new update includes new display options. You can chose from the Longhorn, Rebel and even different color themes for the display now.
No I didn't know that, I'm going look at that right now and also pair my phone. I spoke to Uconnect today and asked about the 17 vs 07 and they said 07 was the latest but I think they may be wrong if you've got 17. I just reluctantly ordered the $165 map update.

Let me know if you have any problems. Have noticed sluggish interface and weird bugs since I updated. I hear customer service at mopar is advising not to update until the next version comes out (hopefully soon).
My uconnect software got stuck at 67% , Uconnect replaced my whole radio ..I tried everything and dint upload ,took to dealer and they contacted uconnect and they payed for a new radio ,only because there software Dint work and locked the radio
I have 2015 grand Cherokee limited, I was doing the 18.45.01 Uconnect update and suddenly the update failed on the 11 part saying "Sierra Wireless: bolo file install failed. Please remove USB stick to reset." and I've replugged the USB and tried another USB but nothing change. How can i get back my old software version or download an older one, the vehicle was on 18.11.07. PLS HELP.
I talked to U-connect customer service yesterday and they told me that they are only taking U-connect a month at a time. The 3G system is going to be disconnected by 2022. What you will have to do is take your vehicle in and have them put a new 'box' that will update your vehicle to 4G. TMT Too Much Technology :-)
These damn radios do some weird stuff. You can choose the apps you want displayed but that doesn't help you if you don't have access to the apps icon. I'd do the factory default reset in the settings menu and see if it doesn't come back?
i have a 2013 300 and it says my vin in up to date but my bluetooth wont connect unless i disco the battery to reset the system and it only works for a few days then it freezes again any help with this
Hey marion im having problems trying to update it. I did everything the same but whenever i plug it in nothing pops up. Its reading the usb but nothing comes up. I’ve waited 15 minutes and nothing. If im doing something wrong pls let me know!
FYI I stuck the usb in the radio and it told me the software update is incompatible with my radio. So I called mopar and they said this is a known issue for 2014 GC SRT (not sure about other models). They are going to send me an email to download different files apparently.
I suspected that, thanks. I had a washed out backup camera after the install but fixed it with the factory reset. They would admit that they had an issue when i called them however. Good to know.
Turns out they never emailed me, I had to call back. Long story short.. bought a new usb stick cuz they thought the one i used was the problem, well the new one didn't work either. They could not help me any further and so it looks like I have to take it to a dealer and I'll have to pay them for this update, which is crap.
I did everything in this video. Formatted my USB 16 GB to Fat32. Extract the files directly to the USB like how you did. Put my car in Run (engine not running). Nothing happened and I've tried it three times. Then I did it with the engine running and nothing either.
It took about a minute or so to load the USB in the truck, make sure you are waiting long enough. I pulled my out twice thinking nothing was happening. Also, check the directory on your usb drive and make sure there are two files only with no directory. One, the big one should be and iso file. If all else fails, do a full fat32 format on your thumb drive or even try another one, download update again and extract to a pc folder, then copy the two extracted files to the drive. But above all, be sure you wait at least 2 minutes before you give up, it's slow reacting once inserted into the usb socket on the truck. And be sure you are in the setup screen on the 8.4 AN.
I did everything you said in the comment and didn't work. I had a Sandisk USB 3.0 16gb and for some reason, it didn't work. I thought about using a different USB and went out and bought a Kingston USB 2.0 64gb for a few bucks and did what you said in the video/comment and it worked! I don't know what was wrong with my Sandisk but Kingston worked tho.
GTRHeritage that's good great. You might try doing a low-level format to check for errors on the disc. How use a 3.0. Glad you got it going, sorry for all the trouble.
Tryed to do a thumb drive update on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland V8 boy she was not having it waited a month snd the OTA drop in in now the radio works like a charm. sure beats takeing it to the dealer who want to charge a $125 for flashing radio go figure good luck to all FCA owners.
Thanks for this video. The directions on the UConnect website were garbage and didn't mention you had to extract the files, or how or where to put them (root directory). Would have had to go to the dealer to get this done if not for you.
@@MarionBlair Well my truck does not seem to recognize the USB drive with the update on it. The touch screen just does not change from the system info screen.
Make sure the thumb drive is smaller than 32 g and formatted to FAT32. Also make sure the update files are extracted in the root directory of the thumb drive. Don't put the Zip file on the thumb drive. It does take several minutes to read the thumb drive also.
this's what i got : "variant revision and model year mismatch, stick supports MY13_REVB and MY14_REVA but target is MY13_REVA.please remove usb stick to reset "
I wouldn't think so because it wants to see just one file on a thumb drive. I don't think it could find the file on a cell phone. The directory hierarchy is too complicated.
Ok, So I'm wondering if you or anyone else can guide me in the right direction.. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 Sport. The radio went out & the screen is black with a red outline & says " Checking for a USB stick with an update. If USB stick with an update is detected an update can be performed. Then it goes into another screen & says "There was a problem while starting the head unit. If this error persists after an ignition cycle please see your dealer"... Well I went to the dealer & they said that I need a new radio & it costs $3097 plus $110 for installation, Now you can imagine my thoughts **^*%%$#$ ..Hummm. I've never had a radio go bad on any vehicle.. Do you have a solution for this?
Were you doing an update when this happened or it just did it on it's own. It could have been in the middle of an over the air update when it went crazy. Can you get to the reset menu, if you can, I'd reset the radio and if that doesn't work reset to factory default. Also, do you have a USB stick you can put the ISO update file on from uconnect and see if that will satify it's request for the USB stick? After all fails, disconnect the battery and reconnect. You'll lose all your settings of course.
@@MarionBlair Mine did this as well except in reverse, at first I got the "There was a problem while starting the head unit. If this error persists after an ignition cycle please see your dealer" screen, so I did a hard reset and got the "Checking for a USB stick with an update. If USB stick with an update is detected an update can be performed" and I did have the usb stick with update extracted to it inserted.....Now all I get is "please insert update usb" screen over and over. I pulled the fuse for the radio for a week and when fuse reinserted It still ask for update usb??? WTF
Make sure the thumb drive is less than 32 gig and formatted to FAT32. Make sure that the drive has just the update file an no folders or the zip file etc....
so I just recently purchased a 2020 ram 2500 HD midnight edition Big Horn with the 8.4 radio by the way it’s not the Alpine or the Harman Cardin I traded in my 2011 and I have to say my basic 2011 ram had a better sounding stereo than the one that is in my 2020 as I’m listening to music and I like to listen to my music loud the volume goes in and out not completely but it’s almost like somebody is turning the knob back-and-forth I’ve taken it to the dealer they claim there’s nothing wrong there is a TSB about sound issues for the noise canceling but they claim it’s only for the 1500s and has nothing to do with the 2500s very frustrating that an almost $60,000 vehicle has a horrible sounding radio and even when it’s turned all the way up it’s not very loud whatsoever is there anybody out there experienced this issue or can tell me what to do to fix it again happy with the truck overall but the stereo system has me very upset
Just make sure that you have the Auto Sound adjustment disabled. Most radios have an adjustment so that the sound can vary up and down depending on road noise Etc. I never did like it
Good video. maybe you can help me. So, my wife's Dodge Journey had the maps suddenly lock, and we can't access them. We were told that we need to update. So, no problem. I go through pretty much everything you say here. I formatted the USB, I downloaded the files. I extracted them to the USB. According to the PDF on the site, I should then go to the vehicle, start the engine, and insert the USB, at which point it does whatever it needs to do by itself. The only problem is that when I insert the USB, I get a message along the lines of "No usable files" or "no readable files". I have done it multiple times, checking and double checking everything, and then i found your video, which shows basically the exact same thing that I am doing... but it won't read the files. I went back to the site to make sure I had downloaded the right ones, but given that you enter the VIN and it then takes you directly to the download without needing to *choose* for myself, I have to assume they are the right files. Any thoughts?
Make sure that the extracted file is on the USB in the root directory and not in a subfolder also make sure that it's formatted to FAT32. You could extract it to your hard drive and then just copy the One file over to the USB
@@MarionBlair Thanks. I eventually figured it all out. I installed the updates that I needed, but my maps are still locked. I will likely have to bring it in to the shop.
@@craigwilliams9279 in the setup menu there is reset to factory defaults. I. My not help but you might consider it. There's also something called Engineers menu. on the ram it's hit the cold and hot buttons on the AC and heater or whatever and holding both of the same time in that menu that should be a radio reset. If you're out of warranty it might be worth a shot to do those things. If in warranty you might as well bring it to the dealer
Marion, my truck is 01/2017 my im running the 16.52.11 and it says on the website my vin qualifies for the update but it only ends up with one file in the winzip file not 2. Have you heard anything about that im learly about it as i already have drag and drop just dont have the apple play stuff im kinda afraid to do the update with the single file even after exporting them to the fat 32 im thinking of waiting for the ota update but i dont think mine is far off of 17.11.07
Thats what im guessing, ive tried to redownload a few time same result. Im thinking im going to wait, i have a cargo camera too, i watched you new video and seen your problems with the backup camera so i dont want to have a problem with both of them that could be frustrating and my version 16.51.17 or whatever had the factory reset option in my setting by going through the regular menu
Yes, agree. I don't think Uconnect got this one right.. They'll be more updates on the way. The Uconnect folks are easy to talk to and very friendly but really couldn't help me other than to say take it to the dealer (and pay $90 hr)
My Uconnect "trial period" expired an I don't want to pay for the service, I have an 2015 1500 ram with 8.4 with navigation. Does the Uconnect account being expired even matter? Can I still do an update myself?
No it doesn't matter. You can do the updates. I let my 2014 expire and have updated the map and all the additional firmware updates. You are fine and can sign up if you ever decide you like what they offer.
If you have the 8.4AN, it should take it. You can call Uconnect and as them what's going on. There may be something in your vin that's not applicable for this update. I've got the update if you want to try it.

PLS HELP.
Can you access the menu or the radio is locked up.?
I talked to U-connect customer service yesterday and they told me that they are only taking U-connect a month at a time.
The 3G system is going to be disconnected by 2022. What you will have to do is take your vehicle in and have them put a new 'box' that will update your vehicle to 4G.
TMT Too Much Technology :-)
Good to know, thanks.
Still a dodge radio but with XM radio
Did everything and it doesn't work. 2014 ram 3500
Thanks for the tutorial. Can you show us how can i install GPS into my uconnect
it may be already there, you may just have to activate your radio for navigation
Mines say update one update 2 do I put both of them
Hi, I have a 2015 Ram 1500 but when I try to enter the VIN number it tells me that there are no updates available, do you know what I can do?
Which update are you needing, I have a few
@@MarionBlair I want the most updated one, but when I enter the VIN number of my vehicle it tells me that this device does not have any update
Anyone know what’s new?
Aside from the maps thing.
Well done, sir
I have a ram 2014 r/t is there any reason why I don’t have apps on my radio screen it has settings instead of apps3g or whatever !
These damn radios do some weird stuff. You can choose the apps you want displayed but that doesn't help you if you don't have access to the apps icon. I'd do the factory default reset in the settings menu and see if it doesn't come back?
When are you adding the update for the navigation please
which one are you referring to?
i have a 2013 300 and it says my vin in up to date but my bluetooth wont connect unless i disco the battery to reset the system and it only works for a few days then it freezes again any help with this
I'd Do the factory reset
Could you do the update straight from a laptop and not need the thumb drive?
I don't think you could. Need to see something in the USB port at minimum?
Hey marion im having problems trying to update it. I did everything the same but whenever i plug it in nothing pops up. Its reading the usb but nothing comes up. I’ve waited 15 minutes and nothing. If im doing something wrong pls let me know!
Make sure the usb is formated to FAT 32 and make sure the update file is the only thing on the disk.
Didn't have the fat32 option
Did have a fat/default option
Mine does same thing. Plug in but nothing happens.
Will it work for my dodge dart
I have version 13.48.3 will this update work on mine I've tried several times and can't get it to update. Any suggestions? Thanks
I have it if you want to download it. Send me an email if you want it. Not responsible for any issues, ha.
hi i have a ram 1500 2015 and it tells me there is no update, is there any possibility to update it and put wallpapers on it?
Not that I know of
FYI
I stuck the usb in the radio and it told me the software update is incompatible with my radio.
You answered your own question....Chrysler didn't spend the money for new technology 3.0 thus the 2.0 works.
Just got 17.11.17 OTA for my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. STILL NO ANDROID AUTO!!!!
Bummer, probably have to have a newer radio to get the android/ apple play.
yeah...newest radio won't go into my 2014 JGC. Prolly just need to get the 2018 Porsche Cayenne
Nice video
yea, I sat in an 2018 today. The radio is a little different but the truck is pretty much the same as our's.
Jennifer Wood I have a 2017 ram 1500 Laramie is there any way to get android auto with my Uconnect system?
Thanks for this video. The directions on the UConnect website were garbage and didn't mention you had to extract the files, or how or where to put them (root directory). Would have had to go to the dealer to get this done if not for you.
Followed all and 2014 Ram 3500 will not update :)?
what's it doing, there's newer updates now?
@@MarionBlair
Well my truck does not seem to recognize the USB drive with the update on it.
What is the website?
I get the message "no permission" if i try to get the uconnect 8.4. Could you send it to me directly?
Yes send me an email and I'll set up a download from my Google Drive. Marionblairjr@gmail.com
Thanks for your honest comment. You are not the 1st to say that and I've been working on thay.
this update is only for maps or there are additional features?
Just maps
Is this update contain a lot more than the update that my truck downloaded on it's own a couple months ago?
Probably the same update 17.11.07
Can i download it using a laptop?
Yes no problem
Is it the same process in 2020?
I think so, is there a 2020 version?
can you plz put the 17.11 download file on google drive and send a download link or do you know where can i found old software plzzz?
yes, send me an email marionblairjr@gmail.com
Where did you stick the usb?
On my truck, the USB port is in the console compartment
this's what i got : "variant revision and model year mismatch, stick supports MY13_REVB and MY14_REVA but target is MY13_REVA.please remove usb stick to reset "
use another thumb drive and format to fat32 would be my thought
Should the engine be on?
On run but not actually running. If you leave the vehicle, leave your key fob in the vehicle
Does anyone know if you can do the update with your smart phone?
I wouldn't think so because it wants to see just one file on a thumb drive. I don't think it could find the file on a cell phone. The directory hierarchy is too complicated.
Ok thank you
I hope this update fixes the system not retaining your favorite phone numbers in phone mode.
I wasn't aware of that problem but hopefully it will.
WTF
is carplay feature available?
no, unfortunately on 4th gen as far as I know.
thats for sissys. I LOVE IT...
What if I can only format in exFAT?
You have 3.0 USB drive...you need to get a 2.0 USB drive (older)
Or down load a formatting tool that will let you format and drive into fat32
Why no Apple CarPlay?
Would it work with a 2021 ram any body knows?
No. You have UC5 not UC4
An error occurred. Please try again ... No download :/
When is it showing that error? Part ways through the install?
My 13 ram sport doesn't want to read my thumb drive... help lol
Make sure the thumb drive is less than 32 gig and formatted to FAT32. Make sure that the drive has just the update file an no folders or the zip file etc....
My GPS was saying I was driving through like the middle of a lake and was like 200 miles off of where I was
you need the newest update oh, that should fix that. That's a well-known problem
You could be driving in the middle of a lake in Minnesota in Jan. Feb. because the lake would be frozen!! LOL!
so I just recently purchased a 2020 ram 2500 HD midnight edition Big Horn with the 8.4 radio by the way it’s not the Alpine or the Harman Cardin I traded in my 2011 and I have to say my basic 2011 ram had a better sounding stereo than the one that is in my 2020 as I’m listening to music and I like to listen to my music loud the volume goes in and out not completely but it’s almost like somebody is turning the knob back-and-forth I’ve taken it to the dealer they claim there’s nothing wrong there is a TSB about sound issues for the noise canceling but they claim it’s only for the 1500s and has nothing to do with the 2500s very frustrating that an almost $60,000 vehicle has a horrible sounding radio and even when it’s turned all the way up it’s not very loud whatsoever is there anybody out there experienced this issue or can tell me what to do to fix it again happy with the truck overall but the stereo system has me very upset
Just make sure that you have the Auto Sound adjustment disabled. Most radios have an adjustment so that the sound can vary up and down depending on road noise Etc. I never did like it
yeah I can’t stand those the first thing I did when I got the truck was turn those off
Good video. maybe you can help me.
Can I do it with format ntfs
No, has to be FAT32
What about the extFAT
@@acemimi5210 maybe but to be safe and with instructions I'd stay less than 32 gig thumb drive and go with FAT32.
Can you send me the file for this update
It’s too large to send, but I can send you a link to download it. Send me an email and I’ll set it up for you. marionblairjr@gmail.com
I wonder if 5G will allow these updates to come over the air? 5G is many times faster than what's in the vehicles now.
Good question, I'm thinking it will but at 4g speeds.
Marion, my truck is 01/2017 my im running the 16.52.11 and it says on the website my vin qualifies for the update but it only ends up with one file in the winzip file not 2. Have you heard anything about that im learly about it as i already have drag and drop just dont have the apple play stuff im kinda afraid to do the update with the single file even after exporting them to the fat 32 im thinking of waiting for the ota update but i dont think mine is far off of 17.11.07
I think if you only got 1 file out of the down load, something isn't right so I'd wait, personally, or do the download and extract again. thanks.
How
Fuad Mustafa can you elaborate
PIMP birthday party ... bahahahaaaa
Oops, ha.
Lo
I have 2014 ram rt its running 16.13.13 but how come when i type my vin in it says no updates available?
If you have the 8.4AN, it should take it. You can call Uconnect and as them what's going on. There may be something in your vin that's not applicable for this update. I've got the update if you want to try it.
