No one wears booties these days. I guess it's because they don't feel that comfortable, and possibly because they don't look very cool. The advantage of booties is fairly obvious when you have to walk on the reef, but the other advantage is when you wipe out when it's shallow. You can put your feet down rather than getting your back shredded on the reef. It can take one small cut on your foot when you're in the tropics to ruin your trip. I dunno, a bit of a head scratcher for me.
I was at Cloudbreak today and followed all your instructions after copping a few bombsets on the head after a closeout. Only tip I didn't follow was the one you said is most important - the first lip crashed on me and I went over the falls and sucked down to the reef. Foot copped a nice slashing. These tips were life savers mate, especially when I got pushed into the shallow reef, you helped get me out of there.
😥 Koa, if you know anyone who lives on the west side of Maui, my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you and to them. The news coverage is horrific! I have been watching RUclips all morning. 😥
That’s why you wear booties brother! I love them saved my feet thousands of times just get the ones without the split tow or your leash will get caught and you’re always tripping!
well when you were next to me last season on the big swell day we barely made it. and everyone else got wiped. before i duckdove it i looked back at you like lol drama. i duck dove that outside set like a bosss and it was a super long calm hold down slowly pulling me down and moved me a few football fields underwater easily there is so much power and that reef is so nasty. everything he says is spot on and the best and worse times of my life.
I been caught inside there to. I went to stand up and thr lip drove my face into my board, first wave of a 10 wave set. You end up lower than sea level and the boats can't see you during sets. Luckily another surfer just as he kicked out looked in and spotted me. I gave him the double double x arms over the head signal that I needed help. Then during a lull one of the Fijians drove his little boat in to very shallow water and picked me up. It was only a 3-5 foot day to. That wave is scary AF! It was when the tower was still there and I considered letting the waves blast me over the reef and try make it to that. I told that to our guide when I got back to the boat. He screwed his face up and said "bro, you would have been sliced."
Are water shoes good in any of those spots? I surf in El Salvador and a lot of the spots are rock bottom with sea urchins and sharp rocks with shells so im thinking on getting some water shoes just to try and avoid that.
Lol, you reckon WSL chat is wild and you get around with an I ♥A$$ sticker on your laptop 😂😂what a legend, you should hang out in WSL chat more often 🤙🤙
I just read about the fires you really think we get this many fires in Hawaii. Even the shit that went down in Island Davis was wacko years back. Anyhow just checking on your ankle you good Koa your buddy Look like he rip a good chunk of his elbow too. I think Ivan made it out the best just pukeing in the Safari mobile. Stay safe remember we think were inviable but were only human.
I was at Cloudbreak with JOB years ago; it was smaller but still pushed me down to shikabobs; but JOB would get right back out after taking off too deep . He later told me he would paddle up reef (away from the channel) into what he called ‘the lagoon ‘and duck dive smaller/mushier whitewaters and wait for the set to clear.
keep hearing you and others talking about cloudbreak. What is that. Another thing I'm curious about have you ever had any close calls with sharks. Anyway Hawaii prob isn't going to be like it was when you left that fire is roaring your house isn't close to that is it.
This is a great post. Focusing on how to look after yourself in heavy surf. A lot of people throw themselves at bigger waves. Unprepared and get hurt. Would like to see move of this. Thanks 🇦🇺
great stuff- so on a mid size or bigger wave, when you straighten out is it best to ride it in as far as possible? Bailing early on isn't an option? Even assuming there may be a bigger one out the back?
thanks for the in depth insight into the ins and outs of dealing with a big wave spot and how important it is to have a strategy. And of course a legend like Abe doesn't hurt. thanks for sharing, brah
“When the wave breaks here, don’t be there”.
It’s that simple
“Or you’re gonna get drilled”🤙🤙🤙
No body listens to Turtle
So i bet you surf waves like this all the time huh?
Yeahh...suuure
RedJursey, You’re so Haole, you don’t even know you’re haole. Surfed it 20 foot alone, but you are always alone out there.
Just ordered my this is living blenders. Hope all is well with fires. Keep making content. Great stuff. Love you and Nate podcast too.
Yeah man shallow reef and duckdiving and hold your rail and yeah... Dry. Cuts the crap out of your hands.
How's the foot...?🇳🇿✌️
Prayers and thoughts go out to you guys on the big island with those wildfires 🤙🇦🇺🍻 keep livin the dream mate
For real, once in a lifetime tragedy. May those you love be well.

Hi Koa. I hope everyone in Maui is okay. Terrible fires there at the moment ❤

Quick Question, when Duck Diving is not an option, is it Better to Dive down Head First as Deep as you can or go Down Feet First.
Would you or Nate ever try to do the Nelscott Reef Pro? seems like a pretty big and gnarly wave!
😥 Koa, if you know anyone who lives on the west side of Maui, my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you and to them.
The news coverage is horrific!
I have been watching RUclips all morning. 😥
Lahaina Harbor and town burnt to the gound 😞🙏
@@storm2000808 Yeah, I have been glued to the news all day keeping up on how poor Maui is suffering!
The biggest challenge for me when getting caught inside is staying calm.
The best person to talk to is a local.
Hey Koa you pulled off a decent add, nice. vpn's are the go for sure
Thanks for sharing brotha!
Oh and bless you on that sneeze
That’s why you wear booties brother! I love them saved my feet thousands of times just get the ones without the split tow or your leash will get caught and you’re always tripping!

Great advice Koa , hope everything at home settles down soon.
Honestly Koa said a lot of nothing there even for north VPN but this is living still
Really cool breakdowns and inside info for a wave that I'll never surf (too big!)
Hey thanks for switching it up with commentary. I’m so over vids / music.

Hope you’re feeling better bro. Would be sick to hear travel hacks from you and Nate on the next pod

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack…. It’s EVERYWHERE. WHAT….NVPN! Aaaaaaaaaaackkkkkkkkk.
You portray yourself as a badass from a family of fighters...but you you say nothing
Me happy to just be duck diving successfully…
The "I ❤A$$" sticker on his laptop had me laughing goood

How's your foot, Koa? Hopefully, you're on the mend bra.
When’s the breadstick dropping!?🥖
can you do a video where you surf tombstones in Gnaraloo WA?
Brooooooooooooooooo that is definitely advanced surfing. It kind of doesn't even look fun. haha
Do you feel like Hawaii has been targeted with the fires on Maui???

Unfortunately, the only way to know what getting caught in the wrong spot in the waves is like, is to get caught in the wrong spot.
Thanks, Koa! I’m new to watching you & Nate & others surfing so I appreciate the narration!
Um thought you were gonna drop knowledge lol nice commentary tho 😂
Nothing better than watching the local lads run across the reef like it's grass while you pancake for your life
Def enjoy the technical breakdowns.
I liked the vid! Would love to see some basic stuff like how to manage a line up and how to know where to sit and not sit at breaks
great stuff- so on a mid size or bigger wave, when you straighten out is it best to ride it in as far as possible? Bailing early on isn't an option? Even assuming there may be a bigger one out the back?
Enjoyed that. Yeah U and Nate doing one of these would be cool.
Koa, my go-out prayers🙏 to your fellow Mauians.
Oh so when makua went over the falls there he was at the worst place because he went down with the lip hehe but he lived to talk about it.
W0W!
Get well
thanks for the in depth insight into the ins and outs of dealing with a big wave spot and how important it is to have a strategy. And of course a legend like Abe doesn't hurt. thanks for sharing, brah

Would it be a waste of time/money as a beginner surfer to goto Tavarua?
Yes, a waste of time and money. Go somewhere with sand and small waves.
