  • In this report, we're on the hunt for a unique genetic strain of walleye found no where else in the world but the New River system. Alex McCrickard, Aquatic Education Coordinator, teams up with DWR walleye guru, Sgt. Wes Billings, to learn the "ins and outs" of how to target this strain of walleye in late Summer on Virginia's Claytor Lake.

I live past the landing, and you need to go back up river farther to the start of where you see draper road then troll, using double jig, one deep, but has weed guard, and one mid runner, or LYs to give off live bait scent. Ive caught so many and checked in at Bryson's store back in the day, you should listen

Never trolled before but Ive read that using a small syringe filled with air and injecting the air into the body of the nitecrawler helps a bit with the harness getting hung up...

Lol, don't matter, I recommend not traveling with needles and stuff while out there though, I lived right on the river where they are talking about. They have it all wrong, you fish from dusk to AM, zig zagging, using double jig w leaders, I've caught many sizable walleye, but you need to go up the river and go down where the draper road is. Anyways these ppl that have GPS, and all there fancy shit, I can put fish them by myself in a flat bottom

The ones I caught in Black Lake as a boy in upstate NY were plentiful and delicious … Wegmans food market has fresh walleye fillets that are just as delicious pan fried in cracker & beer batter !!!

Two questions...Are there Walleye below the dam?
Does the dam release both cold water from the base of the dam and warmer water over top of the dam. If it does release water from base of the dam ... are water temps colder below the dam than in the lake.

Water only runs below the dam. Never over the top. And there are pretty much no walleye below the dam

Thx for this comment. Since water is only released from bottom of dam at Claytor Lake ... why doesn't it create a cold water trout fisheries between the dam and where the Little River joins the New River?

There's huge walleyes below the dam that's where the record will b broke next caught a 13lb and 3 10s in one night down there and got a Pic I doubt they even can pull that off in the great lakes

Check the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario and Greenbay on Lake Michigan. Fish over 15lbs. on a regular basis.

Only comparable to walleyes in the great lakes and tributaries. Many 14# er's are caught every spring in lake Erie. Lake Erie, ,Detroit river, Lk.St Clair and St Clair river the premier Walleye fishery in the US....

What’s the difference between these walleyes than say a normal river walleye? Do they have different genetics or what?

I mean optimal forage will make any fishery great. A lot of Midwest small rivers hold 10# fish up to 13-14#. Columbia river is just insane. Spots in North Dakota break the 14# mark. Are there more of these fish breaking 10? What makes them so special?
