The answer to the question that Louise Beavers was too humble to answer is that up to the time of the airing of this show she had appeared in approximately 164 motion pictures!
She died only three years later in 1962 at age 60.
Groucho was 69and lived another 17 years (d. age 86)
Louise Beavers was an absolute doll, she had a wonderful personality, humble, so talented, and just a beautiful person to be around, you just don’t see too many people like that anymore today.
You got that right including Hattie McDaniel beautiful people 💫
@@paulcaron400 Indeed you are right. It is both refreshing and revealing to see her her team mate provide real-life experience that shows how narrow lives of 'other' people can be portrayed.
Another fascinating aspect of these shows is the camera shots of the members of the studio audience. This is especially true when the contestants are so unique - the camera shots of the audience show real interest.
And Groucho treats her with total and obviousy sincere respect.
Those poor black women HAD to act like a grateful Mammy in those days to appease White People!
Sometimes Groucho made it obviously clear that personality and talent, not color, were what really mattered to him on his show. His recognition of Louise Beavers as a worthy colleague demonstrated that fact...
He certainly treats her with genuine respect, and he's respectful to the Congolese man, too. In 1960, that was something a lot of Americans needed to see. I'm sure it was especially meaningful to Ms. Beavers, because she usually had to play demeaning "Mammy"-type roles. Here she had the opportunity to be treated and recognized as the gifted actress, and lady, she really was.
Amen
Also he had the Silvers on their before when they were kids
@@jayhendricks67...yup. Leon and Shirley Sylvers and their children (who performed 'The Gopher Song' that night). They won $2,500...
@@jayhendricks67 ...I will also add this. Watch RUclips videos of WHAT'S MY LINE? My admiration for John Daly as host is exactly alongside Groucho...and for the exact same reasons...
I saw Louise Beavers in numerous movies over the years. She had a kindness and dignity about her I admired, and still do. Love looking back on this period of America because people were more polite and unpretentious.
Unfortunately, she was primarily limited to "Mammy: roles.
Louise Beavers--a remarkable woman. And her Congolese friend is quite itelligent--answering questions l didn't know; and l'm a teacher!
@Chelle Bright It can happen. A real teacher is someone who can also learn; realizing that he/she doesn't have all the answers.
Those questions were easy, and he failed on much simpler, open sesame!
It's not simpler if English is a foreign language.😊
Groucho did not discriminate with any of the guests he had on, certainly unique for the time period that these shows were produced. Kudos to the producers of the show.
Love Louise Beavers. She was a gem!
Even during those distant days of his tv show, Groucho was an old guy. But he was far more modern and progressive than his younger tv hosts.
I'm proud to be from the same hometown as Louise Beavers, Cincinnati, Ohio. She sadly passed away in Hollywood a couple of years after this appearance on You Bet Your Life, at age 62...
I love the way the plumber got a big laugh repeating Groucho’s joke.
By my count, Groucho got off 15 quips AFTER the plumber registered his complaint. He’s the best there ever was.
"Plumber: I got the gold key." Groucho: "Was that for the washroom?" Classic.
...hilarious
One of the best, if not the best, segments from You Bet Your Life. The conversation with the plumber exemplifies the comedic genius of Groucho Marx. His rant about the state of comedy at that time was certainly a portent of things to come. It's hard to believe how squarely he hit the nail on the head. "Now you can't kid anybody anymore." How true.
But what, was it about things to come or how they were in 1960? You know, the good old times?
louise beavers had such a lovely smile and such a warmhearted way about her. rip
Louise Beavers, so underrated. Love her in all her films.
+voceval1 I loved her as well
Hard to be 'rated' at your worth when you're not given a chance to shine. The waste of minds and talents of African-Americans thanks to prejudice and (in the past 50 years) their own failure to take up the torch of achievement from their forebears in the Civil Rights movement is a great tragedy - a huge loss to the United States and the world.
The Demokkkrats want it to stay that way. They can't win without their votes.
Groucho gave her props
Never had heard of her, but what a deli lady
what a wonderful woman.! such an honour seeing here here ..
"Now you can't kid anybody anymore...." LOL, if Groucho could only see the state of things now!
Ditto!
so... nothing has changed.
Now, you can't eat walk, or breathe either. You can't do anything. How were you able to make this comment? You should hide before others find out.
@@Michelle-pn9xt The norve of the plummer.
WOW ! I cant believe it . Political correctness ! it started in 1960 !!!
Plumber: If there were no leaders and no plumbers, in the morning when the hot water heater wasn't working who would the wife miss the most?
Groucho: The Milkman!
Great reply!
Ms beavers was in so many movies she couldnt remember how many. What a wonderful accomplishment.
Yes, & she was such a talented actress. She seems like such a lovely lady.
My favorite role of Ms. Beaver has to be the cook in "Tammy and the bachelor". She did such a great job playing a crusty but soft-hearted soul.....
Louise Beavers and Groucho-the world of today could use both of these legends!!
In this country it's called "alimony"... my goodness the whit! Hilarious! Thank you for the taking the time to download these! It's so refreshing to see!
I love Louise Beavers. Been crazy about her since I was a kid.
I love how Groucho tries to make an apology but then a joke pops up in his mind and he just can't help himself ! What a brilliant man.
I have been watching a lot of these YBYL shows on youtube and find them very entertaining. I have just suddenly thought though. This was the late 1950s and early 1960s. I was not even born then!! It just shows how some classic shows are timeless. Groucho was ahead of his time with his inuendos and double entendres. One of the great comedians of all time.
This is a delight. And Groucho's remark about people becoming easily offended and having no sense of humor...dang, if that doesn't sound just like life here in 2023! 😻
What a beautiful woman who tolerated so much raciest garbage… RIP
beautiful one …
Whoa. You couldn't show this stuff on TV today. I guess the lesson here is don't mess with Groucho.
I like what he said about you can't kid anyone anymore, much more true today!
TODAY EVERYTHING IS POLITICALLY CORRECT NO FUN ,JUST SICK ANGRY MONEY HUNGRY PEOPLE
Groucho,
You nailed it. The times are so much worse than you’d ever imagine. It’s the United States of the Offended these days. It’s pathetic.
I know it's like all these republican snowflakes who get offended at someone kneeling during the anthem 😂 or when they get told to wear a mask in a private business and they throw a hissy fit 😂
If you ain't eatin' Wham, you ain't eatin' ham.
"Give Gussie a ten dollar raise!"
It might not seem like a big deal, but compared to other shows of the day Groucho had quite a few guests who were black.
At 13:35, the irate plumber (Dino Martinez) talks about studying 300 books to become a plumber. If the secret word was "book" didn't they accept plurals as having said the secret word? Or were they concentrating so much on the unfolding dramatic confrontation that they simply missed it? Sometimes the show's staff caught one that I missed and I was wondering if they ever missed one. I'm thinking this qualifies.
And I agree with Groucho on not being able to kid people anymore. Fortunately, satire didn't completely die out in 1960 as we had wonderful satirists like Tom Lehrer continue to perform throughout the 1960's and into the early 1970's. In today's climate, could Groucho even have a career now?
Absolutely not. He would be unemployed.
Googled Louise Beavers since i wanted to find out in which movies she was in. Turns out she died 2 years after appearing in Groucho Marxs show of diabetes at the age of 60. Luckily today people with diabetes can live usually much longer.
See "Imitation of Life" 1934
Deniz Puolamäki I read it was a heart attack that killed her.
From Wikipedia: Later in life, Groucho would sometimes note to talk show hosts, not entirely jokingly, that he was unable to actually insult anyone, because the target of his comment would assume that it was a Groucho-esque joke, and would laugh...I wonder if the plumber thought Groucho was joking, or wondered if he was being insulted? Definitely cracked me up. lol
his parents were illegal immigrants who overstayed their vista.
Central Park was dangerous even back in those days , huh
I always say: bad park inside a good neighborhood.
Fascinating narrative by the Congolese gentleman.
I like how people talked back then. So much more civil. I wish I could go live in Eisenhower America. Notwithstanding Jim Crow and all the other nonsense.
If you must be a Marxist, let it be Groucho and his brothers.
NEVER have I heard Marxism referred to so simply and so inoffensively! That deserves many thumbs up! 👍
This is my favourite quiz show Right now
Imitation of Life...Louise Beavers
OMG that movie makes me tear up everytime 😢
Groucho’s comments at 14:52 is spot on still today, amen Groucho
Interesting hearing Groucho speak about how sensitive society has become to jokes and funny insults. Sounds like today.
George Alexander we need another Marx
George, Yes, but if you'll notice, many people took issue to Groucho making fun of them even back then. There are plenty of ways to joke without being annoying to your guests, which Groucho often was.
Yeah. KARL Marx.
@@arttrombley7385 I have watched every available YBYL episode numerous times and I can assure you that very few people were upset by his politically incorrect humor. People back then laughed, not only at the world, but at themselves as well. Life was serious enough*
Mary, that is Your opinion, I have mine. I read faces and I think that many people were offended by Groucho.
She looks (and sounds) so intelligent; not the stereotyped expressions she was so often forced to portray in her dynamic acting roles.
Good Ole AmeriKKKa. I'm sure that Beavers lady was so SICK of having to play those Mammy roles and humbling dumbing down to appease Whites! So sad 😢
The little speech or commentary (whatever you feel to refer to it as) is one of the most personally revealing comments Groucho ever made on the show. Despite his tendency to say whatever he usually felt like, he seemed to keep his "self" very personal.
I love these old shows....Groucho was the king of corny jokes....
What a sweet woman Ms. Beavers was
Groucho is hilarious.🤣😝
The master of one liners...
Great actress!
She’s a sweetheart, a very nice woman, I like her demeanor, very respectful and kind.
Groucho had LOTS of blacks, hispanics, arabs, foreigners of all kinds and would honor such people as Asian-American diver and Olympic gold medalist Sammy Lee. He was never condescending at all.
He was a liberal Democrat
Omigod - not a liberal Democrat. Not one of those bleeding hearts who care more about people than corporations? Not that, dear god, anything but that!
A 'liberal democrat' of the 1950's would be well to the Right of Donald Trump today. This is NOT an joke, this is the truth.
People were not denied tickets by race. You can also see an all white audience at a hockey game but, hey, its a free country.
If you were even SLIGHTLY liberal at ALL in the 1950s, you were considered a Communist. Where the hell do you get your information?
PC even back then, amazing.
No... it was just the beginning of losing a sense of humor. If it was PC at work Grouchos life would have been threatened, his sponsors forced to dump him, the studio picketed by protesters and they would not relent until his life was destroyed. THAT is what PC is. It's socialism's strong arm man.
The Belgian-Congo dissolved this same year.
At 17:00 Groucho says "You blew the duke". From a discussion of an old episode of _Batman_ : "It turns out, it’s an old gambling term referring to cards. The 'duke' is your hand and 'blow the duke' would mean losing with a good hand. Clearly this was never a popular phrase and the explanation indicates it fell out of use in the late 1950s." www.spunkybean.com/comic-books/the-summer-of-batman-66-2-1-the-archer-and-catwoman/
One word: TENSE. This show was the weirdest YBYL I've seen yet. That dopey plumber sure had a plunger up his you know what...Groucho: "You want this back?" Plumber: "No, I have photostatic copies!"... I'd love to hear what Groucho said to Guedel after the show...Even in 1960 Political Correctness reared its ugly head. Like Groucho said, "Just like in Russia"....
you got it PC
garbage
We need another YBYL. I know you are busy but please. Thank you.
In 1960 you rarely saw Africans emigrate to the USA, except for the Cape Verdeans in New England.
I’m reading all of the comments about what a “progressive” Groucho was. Seriously? lol
He had respect for people who earned it through hard work, no matter their race. That is not a progressive trait, that is a conservative trait.
Progressives defend everyone who waits for handouts and plays a victim. Groucho did not.
Also, Groucho was as sick as we are today of the lack of humor in this world.
His comment about not being able to tell jokes about various people goes hand in hand with the preacher he had on his show just before this episode who said that it was getting to a point that everyone was getting offended about everything. And look how much worse it is today. It was still fun in those days because you could kid other ethnic groups and they just give it right back to you.
But now they sue you for hurting their feelings. Or they cancel you, ban you or anything else to silence you to promote their communist agenda.
Groucho even remarked how much like Russia we were becoming and this was when America was still America. Before the democrats destroyed it completely.
Great comment. It shows there are ~yet~ a few independent thinkers in this world. Thanks.
Yeah it's like all these republican snowflakes who throw a hissy fit when someone kneels during the anthem. Or like when they flipped out when they lost the election because they are sore losers. Groucho would have a lot to say about them eating Ivermectin (i.e. horse paste) for COVID too. Bunch of idiots they are lol
and the Republicans blew up the World Trade Center
What rude, surly contestants. Groucho handled them both with class and stood his ground. I admire him enormously.
Wow, that plumber is such a drip!
I agree that people are too sensitive these days. Groucho was always ready to "hold his own" when it came to any guests confronting him about his jokes. I woudn't worry too much about the complaints from the plumber who came off a bit overly sensitive, but it seems I have heard that the shows were somewhat planned ahead; they may have encouraged that this topic would come up, and I think Groucho actually enjoyed a little sparring; it gave him a good way to showcase his quick wit, and it was probably great for ratings too! By the way, full disclosure: My grandfather was a plumber, and yes, everyone would miss plumbers more that politicians, hands down! But no offense taken for the jokes, Groucho is awesomely funny.
These were the 2 easiest bonus questions and each couple blew it.
The Brother broke it down.
I love Louise Beavers!
Here is the obituary for Andrewina Rodenborn aka Ina E. Stewart. 1934-2011 www.tributes.com/show/Ina-E.-Stewart-92481626
Thanks for sharing, she seem to be a lovely person.
The plumber wasn't all that angry.
He was just being honest and laying it on the line with Groucho.
So there's some exaggerated nonsense at play here.
Agreed. Seems to be some overreaction by some of the respondents here.
Yah. The whole thing actually came out kinda humorous.
The comments on political correctness were amazing, considering today's ultra sensitivity.
Yeah like all these sensitive republican snowflakes who throw a hissy fit when someone kneels during the national anthem lol
@@benjaminp8770 anyone who kneels for the National Anthem, shouldn't be given any attention whatsoever.
The young man from Congo fascinated me with his information. It's true most people got their views of Africa watching Tarzan movies. I was really disappointed that the plumber and lady didnt get the 2000. Their whole segment was hilarious .
The audience leaked out a much deserved round of applause for Groucho despite fear of the plumber!
Love her. Talented actress.
🤔Interesting (a shame really) how so many parts of Africa were colonized and the native people were taught (as acceptance to such conditions we shoved down their throats and they were beaten into submission) to be proud of it with a smile on their face. 🤨😡
Groucho was the greatest actor, greatest entertainer and greatest comedian ever!!!
He was the undisputed king of the ad lib.
"Was that for the washroom?" LMAO
Louise beavers was one of four actresses (including Hattie McDaniel, Ethel Waters, and Amanda Randolph) to portray a maid named Beulah on the Beulah
television show. That show, running from 1950-1953) was the first television situation comedy to star a black person. In a lesser role, she played a maid, Louise, for the first two seasons of the Danny Thomas Show (1953-1955).
I'm surprised that an established actress like her would be appearing on You Bet Your Life. Was the exposure necessary to help her career at her age? If she needed money, the show sure didn't pay much. Does anyone know whether other prominent people were ever contestants on the show?
Regarding Beulah: You left out Lillian Randolph, who also played Beulah.
However, the *first two* actors to play Beulah were actually White men, named Marlin Hurt & Bob Corley, respectively.
Yes, there were many, one being Liberace. I think they appeared for the benefit of the show. Their appearances made the show more interesting.
Liberace played "Beulah"? Must'a been when it was still a radio show.
A lot of prominent people appeared on the show over the course of a decade!
Phyllis Diller, then unknown, appeared on YBYL.
George's hair is like a mirror!
9:57 “Well Miltz is something like that. You take the lining of a cow’s stomach, and you fill it up with a lot of schweinerei and then bake it. … We used to have that when we were kids. It was cheaper than eating.”
@ 19:41 to 19:42 you can clearly hear someone say, "Shit!", I think it was someone in the audience. Some things never go out of style.
Whoa the plumber takes himself way too seriously, any publicity, good or bad works to your benefit. When do plumbers get their uniforms fit so that they show a generous helping of butt crack, in the 1st year or at graduation time?
Said he got a degree in Aeronautical engineering? But he missed the Q about Amelia Earhart? would be like getting a degree in nuclear physics and never hearing of Einstein, just cannot happen. If he had that degree in that time? as Groucho said he'd be making alot of money with the space race and military projects? that was the gold degree yet he was a plumber, and an angry snotty one at that? As Groucho said whats the matter? wasnt the joke funny enough?
I'm almost surprised Groucho didn't ask that~!!
Groucho was genuinely miffed with the plumber taking notes!
If I didn't know he was already dead, I thought for a moment that the plumber was going assassinate Groucho, which I guess going by the rules of succession would have made Johnny Carson the new host of YBYL.
He had a right to be miffed. The guy got serious over Groucho's comedy.
I'm not here for the quizzes...
I have never heard a plumber talk about a " hot water heater " THERE IS NO SUCH THING - - Plumbers know they are " COLD water heaters " You don't have to heat hot water.
I wonder why Groucho never had Margaret Dumont on YBYL?!
She wouldn't appear unless she was paid and that was against the rules of the show.
Despite the Congolese man's enthusiasm for his country - the Belgian Congo - 1960, the year this episode aired, was the same year that the Belgian Congo declared its independence from Belgium and became the Democratic Republic of The Congo.
Why would that be “despite” his enthusiasm? That sounds like a wonderful development!
I am surprised but happy to hear that she was in the screen actor's guild. I did not know that could be allowed. when did that start? I really am interested.
You don’t need a hot water heater, it’s a cold water heater.
Today's woman would fix the hot water heater herself.
*****
I would. But it seems nowadays, not even men try anymore.
Well your a strong masculine female aren't you?
I lived in Hangzhou! Groucho really mispronounced it, but that’s expected.
HOLY COW! I used to live in Effingham Illiniois!
Fuckingham Illinois? Terrible name.
This black woman looks like Donna Brazile without all her beige makeup!
I was thinking the same thing. However, we should not disparage Ms. Louise Beavers by confusing her with that damn Donna Brazile.
He was ahead of everybody.
It's not really Tommy's fault that he only knew "Open Sesame" in French 🤷🏻♀️
Louise is SO PLEASANT!
Groucho was correct on the leaky faucet wasn't leaking until the last plumber forgot the washer lol. Aside from that guy being defensive for plumbers, he didn't say shit after Groucho said that and the pipe wrench joke, cause plumbers ALWAYS forget something.
I know generalizing and typecasting people is seen as a bad thing, sorry but there's always an element of truth to it. Sorry Charlie.
I notice all black contestants were only paired with other black contestants. I guess even though Groucho was not a racist, he could not have whites and blacks being partners on the show. I guess that would be too much for some of the audience
It wasn't his choice, it was the network's choice based on societies unethical...ethics!
Cheryl Baker that’s right it was the sponsors and show producers that couldn’t mix races on this show. But I am astonished how respectful and gracious he treats blacks and other people of color on his show. Groucho makes jokes but he doesn’t say demeaning or stereotypical jokes. Very intelligent and progressive man, God bless him and RIP .
The South would have gone ballistic (1960)
You are wrong. I have watched every available episode of this show (many only available on DVD thru Shout Factory) and there were many times where "mixed" couples appeared together. Stop with the racist garbage. Geez...
Groucho's joke about bringing beads to trade with the natives was spot on.
He meant that the Congolese sounded so advanced from the gentleman’s description that they could come to America and swindle the Americans into giving over land to them for trinkets.
Those guests were so rude to Groucho!
The Congo was a very rough place, very corrupt government! Probably still is.
With all the European agitators taking their gold, cell phone materials, diamonds etc...No wonder😒😒
@@elainelane1119 To paraphrase Charles Darwin, the native Africans were surrounded by water but never dreamt a sail...
We will probably never have a comedic equal to Groucho. The Marx Brothers were lucky that they had each other to bounce ideas off of to sharpen their already great talent.
Louise always seemed to be such a sweet soul
It is 26 January 2020: Can we get new episodes please?
