  • This week, we finally learn a little more about Penny and Jim besides the fact that they're interested in the opposite sex.
    Groucho drafts the always embarrassed but always game Fenneman to do the Cha-Cha with Penny. . . but that's nothing compared to what he puts poor George through when he's trying to introduce the second couple (@ 9:56).
    NOTE: The ending of this episode is cut off.
    COUPLE #1 (teenagers returning from last week): Penny Kelly, who wants to be a dance instructor / Jim Balboni, who plans to be President of the United States
    COUPLE #2: Janet Willets, veterinarian / Henry Kalfain, valet at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco

    I want to thank you soooo much for loading this. Penny Kelley is my mother (still dancing today) and we used to have this on VHS, but it got lost somewhere in time. You have made me a happy son, my mother happy as well as my siblings and quite a few grand kids. We found this tonight and passed it around like the latest viral video, Thanks again.

      Wow! This wonderful. Thank you for your reply. I’m sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. She was so funny because she had several boyfriends. One likes to dance another one likes to go to a show another one likes to eat… She looked like a very good dancer. She said she wasn’t getting married till she was 24. I’m so happy to hear from you. Over the years I often wondered how people did. I’m so happy to hear all worked out well. She sounds like a wonderful woman and yes you should be very proud of her.

    I love the episodes where Groucho gives George a hard time and won't let up. George was paid plenty to take it! Anyway, it made him a 'straight man' and vital part of the show, not just an 'announcer' he understood this well and Groucho certainly appreciated him.

    For all the ribbing Fenneman took, he never took it personally, In fact, Groucho once said that Fenneman was like a son to him, and during the run of "You Bet Your Life" and until Groucho's death they saw each other about once a month or more, usually going to lunch together at a restaurant like the Brown Derby or, when Groucho became too ill to do this, they'd eat at Groucho's house. Since this episode highlights dancing, it reminds me of a story from near the end of Groucho's life. He was in a wheelchair and had been taken out and placed in a regular chair for Fenneman's visit. Before George left, Groucho asked to be put back in the wheelchair; George put his arms around him to lift him back into it. "George, you always were a lousy dancer," Groucho told him.

    • @loissimmons109
      @loissimmons109 8 лет назад +2

      The more I see him, the more I appreciate how talented he was. There is a debate as to whether Margaret Dumont was totally oblivious to Groucho's humor. But George knew exactly what Groucho was up to at all times. He had great timing and ability to keep his cool and stay on task most times, go along with Groucho's zaniness sometimes, and now and then give a zinger back.
      In fact this was the only time I have seen him in any of the episodes I've watched so far show any sign of being genuinely upset. At one point when he is walking away and his back his turned to the camera, he gives an obvious gesture of disgust with his right hand. I can imagine he greatly regretted Henry Kalfain coming on the show, or at least sharing that he considered the man to be his friend. If Henry and Dr. Willets had won the money (and I guess we will never know), I can imagine Groucho giving George grief all over again.

    • @loissimmons109

      Great voice, great looks, great poise, very professional and he seems to be a very likable fellow as well. The closest I can think of to him was Lyle Waggoner. His voice was maybe a tiny notch below, but he did more actual acting than George. They both had to put up with a comedian who would try to throw them off (George with Groucho and Lyle with Tim Conway).
      Is there an announcer today who can compare with either of them?

    case in point of just part of how i have worked on this project... using You Bet Your Life - Episode #5 as my example.. first i made sure with every single posted episode with the same secret word was not a duplicate.
    here is an explanation of how i fix the dates on these episodes...
    1) at 05:50 the answer to the question would have been out of date as of April 27, 1957. therefore we can rule out this episode airing anywhere in seasons 8-11 [1957-1961]
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men%27s_pole_vault_world_record_progression
    2) based upon the stage design we can conclude that this has to be from seasons 1-4 [1950-1954] as evidenced by
    season 1 episode You Bet Your Life #50-21 Army quartermaster; Sculptor (Secret word 'Door', Feb 22, 1951) showing the same set design
    season 4 episode You Bet Your Life #53-16 Groucho sings Scottish folk music (Secret word 'Light', Dec 31, 1953) still with the same set design
    season 5 episode You Bet Your Life #54-08 First female Mayor of Newport Beach (Secret word 'Chair', Nov 4, 1954) when they changed the set at the new season's start.
    3) it cannot be a season 1 episode since the rules here You Bet Your Life #50-21 Army quartermaster; Sculptor (Secret word 'Door', Feb 22, 1951) start you with $20 and this episode starts at $100.
    so it had to air between September 1951 in the 2nd season and May 1954 in the end of the 4th season.
    also from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Bet_Your_Life the rule change can be broken down to put this episode in season 4.
    4) also with the game rules: You Bet Your Life #53-23 Spunky old lady vs. Groucho (Secret word 'Clock', Feb 18, 1954) still is starting them from $0.
    now we have this episode narrowed down to airing somewhere between February 18, 1954 and October 10, 1954 (which is the next verified episode You Bet Your Life #54-05 High school financier; Boxing referee (Secret word 'Window', Oct 14, 1954) starting them out with $100) so this has to be somewhere in episode 0424-0504
    5) from point 2 on my list and point 4 we can rule out season 5 which means this has to be from between February 25, 1954 and the end of season 4 about April-May 1954.
    at this point it can only be an episode number 0424 to about 0439 which is the standard length of a weekly show during that period of history.
    6) it also cannot be the last episode of the season since there is no announcement to watch the summer "best of" series. so it has to be some where between 0424 (February 25, 1954) and June 3, 1954.
    You Bet Your Life #55-39 Mayor of Torrance, CA - Season finale (Secret word 'Hand', Jun 21, 1956) (showing the final episode of season 6 [2 seasons later] announcing the summer series starting the next week) which is episode 0639 (once again standard season length at this point in history [its now 26 in case you wondered])
    www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=1954&country=1 (it aired on tv every thursday night)
    0423 - (54-02-18)-Clock You Bet Your Life #53-23 Spunky old lady vs. Groucho (Secret word 'Clock', Feb 18, 1954)

    You are so right when you say that your source is cheapo public domain DVD's. It's great that you post these, even as flawed as they are because they are both entertaining and of historical value. And we get to see them for free. But I hate to think of the people who had to pay for such an inferior product. I remember another episode where the entire ending was cut off. It was during the period where the players could keep their money rather than risk it to win the bigger prizes. I figured that all of them decided to keep what they had. But here it is so clear that someone botched it, cutting if off right as the second couple were picking their numbers. I'm picturing someone taping it off of their TV set and running out of tape.

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 лет назад +6

      Actually, I've never seen an episode on a commercial DVD (or VHS) that was cut off; the ones (like this one) that are incomplete are home recordings of TV reruns. The big problem with the cheapo public domain releases is that the episodes are never identified, and you'll see the same 20 or so episodes released over and over again. I've bought so many copies of the episodes of the same 20 or so shows, I couldn't even count them at this point!
      Glad you enjoy the videos-- thanks for the comment!

    • @loissimmons109
      @loissimmons109 8 лет назад +6

      Thank you for the clarification. Now it makes more sense that someone recording at home could fail to plan properly and run out of tape.
      That must be awfully frustrating spending good money to find out that you already had all the episodes already many times over. That takes me back to growing up in the fifties when my big brother and his friends would buy packs and packs of baseball cards looking for that last card to get a complete set. All you need is Woodie Held, but you keep getting Don Mossi, Harry Hanebrink, Ed Bouchee, Sammy Esposito and Gus Triandos ... and of course, lots of pink bubble gum and Bazooka Joe comics.
      And then our moms threw out all the cards anyway while those that were preserved are sometimes worth a small fortune. Oh well.

      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 лет назад +5

      Lois Simmons That's painful to even READ let alone experience!
      And yes, it's been-- to say the least-- challenging to collect this series. The home recordings like this one (as opposed to shows I found on PD home video releases) weren't recorded by me. I recorded all these shows back in the early 1990s, but never thought to save my copies, never expecting the show to end up being out of reruns for the next 25 years and that it would be near impossible to assemble a halfway decent collection!

    I don't know if you remember me, I'm the cat who had contacted you about having fixed a good partial episode listing of You Bet Your Life. I have recently begun the enormous tasking of rewatching every episode you have shared and recording the content in each episode of every mention of a prior or upcoming episodes to fix these you have so generously shared with others I have found from other sources. I hope to eventually break this down to as few gaps as possible. If at all possible, I would just like an idea of what episodes you haven't put up yet. Just a list of air dates, number, secret word would be fine. I very much appreciate you help in this matter and would be happy to share my finding so far for all to see.

      It's great you're spending the time to do this, but it's probably not a good way to expend your energy, since there's already an excellent, detailed log for the series. Unfortunately, not many people have it because it was never published formally, but if you're interested in buying a copy, I can put you in touch with the guy who wrote it. Just send me a private message. I would never have even tried to collect this series without that log.

I only post episodes that are otherwise *not* available, and honestly, I don't agree with the practices of those who rip episodes from the only respectful DVD sets of this series. The only episodes I post that come from DVDs are from the cheapo, disgraceful public domain DVDs that never provide any episode info and repeat episodes over and over again.

They never wore a dress, and in their minds, they think that they're making themselves more attractive. I think they used to call it the "grunge look", but it's the human freak-show on display.
