The rapport between Groucho and Dick Cavett is amazing. Dick Cavett held his own and he shows such revere for him. Watching this 1970 episode as 2023 is here.
Yes, the great events and changes that occurred during Groucho's seventy years in show business are truly staggering to ponder, especially when one realizes he began his stage career in 1905, a time when the motor car was a just rich man's plaything and the average life expectancy of an American was considerably less than fifty, working non-stop through nearly eight-full decades of the twentieth century before taking his final bow in 1977, eight years after the Moon Landing and Woodstock. In the years encompassing his very long career as an entertainer two world wars were fought, Henry Ford's Model T convinced the world of the benefits of the auto, radio and television were invented, 12 U.S. Presidents came and went, the Atom Bomb was conjured into existence, space travel made possible, 2 Red Scares swept the nation, polio cured, Jim Crow segregation outlawed, the jet engine brought nearly every corner of the globe to within a day's journey by plane, and the Sun finally set on the British Empire. And this is far from an exhaustive list of the incredible things to happen during Groucho's life as a performer!
Shelly winters, was lovely. Patient, accommodating, & for a Hollywood, star. Down to earth! Love, groucho, he may well be named, grumpo, as he got older. But that's understandable. Cavett genuinely, had a soft - spot for him.
It's great to see this - I am hoping that I can track down the first part of this show when Shelley was interviewed. She was always so bright, quick, and funny.
I think it’s partially because she’s plugging musical about the Marx brothers and their mother. I’ve been nervous too if I were playing Groucho’s mother and he was right there.
What a wonderful world where Groucho sang Tit Willow. You completely forget all the crazy things going on in todays world. And horrible Shelley Winters did not pour a drink on Groucho, so that was at least her best performance.
Groucho was so quit witted, im still not sure he was funny, some times. 50 years later, I'm laughing, " now I get it". Man all these people with him are nervous like those performig improv,. He was very quick, you had to be on your toes. Poor Dick Cavet, the perfect straight man. Always with his chin ,right there. Thanks Groucho and Dick.
Awe, I was hoping to hear the Boys sing from the show... it opened in May 1970 and lasted less than two months. Shelley says "union rules" prevented them from performing songs from the show. B.S. This was a perfect "free" commercial. tooooo bad.
She did say that it was her baby at the beginning of the story...she never said it was her sisters baby...from his account...he's contradicting himself
He just got it confused here. In books I have read, where the same stories are often told, she originally said it was her sister's baby. But in fact it was hers. Groucho dodged a bullet in this event!
In 1970 I turned 21 in Chicago. I made my way to a telephone booth to call my mom back in L.A. to say, "Hey mom! I'm 21 today!" Too poor to have a TV to watch this show when it happened...too busy making history.
Groucho was awesome all the way till he passed away. When each Marx brothers passed away the world lost a great man and comedian. Harpo then Chico and then Groucho. He was passionate about political issues. Especially about our military service. So many servicemen dying. Love love love Groucho and Harpo and Chico. May they rest in peace. I can't wait to get to heaven to go see the Marx brothers perform
A little suprisisng that Groucho needed that guy with the cue card for the song. He was legitimately a lifelong Gilbert and Sullivan afficionado, and he knew most of their plays and songs by heart.
Imagine playing the Marx brothers then getting a first hand account from Groucho of the manic things they used to get up to in their spare time. I`d be like a kid sat on Santa Claus`s knee. Lol
@ 21:39 Groucho sets up the young "Harpo" with the beginning of the classic Mirror scene by walking around him but the kid did not mirror him. Groucho immediately gave up on him. That kid missed the chance of a lifetime...……...
If you knew the history of Groucho and how much he was idolised you would understand a bit more and enjoy his stories more. He was highly intelligent too and devoted his life to entertaining people.
@@louisep5178 There is an assumption that I don't know his history or how he was idolized. I just do not find him humorous. I, also, don't find Robin Williams funny, although I do enjoy his dramatic roles. He was too manic for my taste. Just my opinion.
The rapport between Groucho and Dick Cavett is amazing. Dick Cavett held his own and he shows such revere for him.
Watching this 1970 episode as 2023 is here.
I'm watching this in 2021 and I find his humour intoxicating! What an amazing personality!
What relevance does the year you're watching this have? His humour is timeless
Groucho Marx...simply the greatest. Still unsurpassed in 2019. RIP. You are still making us laugh.
Amazing to watch a man who was on stage before World War I still able to entertain in 1970.

Great to see another Cavett-Groucho episode upload!
I honestly love Dick Cavett’s singing voice! ❤️ bc I love him!😍❤️
When a comedy legend takes control of the room! - ABSOLUTE 100% gold! 😅
Shelly winters, was lovely.
Patient, accommodating, &
for a Hollywood, star.
Down to earth! Love, groucho, he may well
be named, grumpo, as
he got older. But that's
understandable. Cavett
genuinely, had a soft - spot
for him.
19.54. Sums up Groucho. Great Caustic wit. The Marx Brothers should, be taught at Schools.
Yeah school s need more cruelty??!!!
"had I been killed that afternoon, I woulda been more prudent" Brilliant line from Groucho
About 14:20, Groucho says Dick Cavett is probably the best conversationalist in all the late shows. I agree, and I would add then and now.
His self-deprecation is great
I wonder where that hat is right now
I love the war song, and SW sang it very well.
His imitation is fabulous ......
It's great to see this - I am hoping that I can track down the first part of this show when Shelley was interviewed. She was always so bright, quick, and funny.
Frank Ferrante performs as Groucho at live shows, and he is Groucho reincarnated!
Neon noodle
Why did they cut the Groucho impersonators monologue??
Richard Alva Cavett (/ˈkævɪt/; born November 19, 1936) is an American television personality and former talk show host.
May I ask, "how are you avoiding copyright strikes on your videos?"
An intimate look at the life lived by Julius Henry "Groucho " Marx.
I've never seen Shelley so nervous and vulnerable. There's something going on she's not saying.
I think it’s partially because she’s plugging musical about the Marx brothers and their mother. I’ve been nervous too if I were playing Groucho’s mother and he was right there.
Dick Cavett quickly learned how George Fenneman felt for 14 years. LOL
That's beautiful 😂
What a wonderful world where Groucho sang Tit Willow. You completely forget all the crazy things going on in todays world.
And horrible Shelley Winters did not pour a drink on Groucho, so that was at least her best performance.
🥸that’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard!
On Groucho’s last day wearing browline eyeglasses before he wears black eyeglasses, Like his younger brother Zeppo Marx
'She was lying , like all women do ' - VERITAS

Winters seemed off with her performance
Interesting notice, and i must agree on that note.
She seems overly keen to please somehow.
@@ErectedGasCan She actually looks nervous.

I don't think that it was B.S. at all...
Groucho all the way THE ONE AND ONLY D C no match for Groucho or anyone for that matter !!!
Shelly Winters
Too quick. The greatest
She did say that it was her baby at the beginning of the story...she never said it was her sisters baby...from his account...he's contradicting himself

D C IS A STRANGE DUDE 😳
grouchos wit is still unmatched
Look up Mario Cantone's Shelly Winters it is fucking hilarious
That monologue was a bad cut if i ever saw one. 😂
I would have loved to check out that monologue. Such a shame that it got cut out. Please try to restore it.
..it All means Nothing... is What He is Saying....
With respect, pure torture
Cavett was as boring as it gets....
The interview before this, with groucho from 1969, was a lot more entertaining
19:49 I don't get the joke by Groucho here.
I believe they're laughing out of reverence
I think it was a sarcastic response to his playing implying he was not “concert pianist” quality
In 1970 I turned 21 in Chicago. I made my way to a telephone booth to call my mom back in L.A. to say, "Hey mom! I'm 21 today!" Too poor to have a TV to watch this show when it happened...too busy making history.
Shelley Winters must've thought Groucho was incredibly funny (which he was) because she laughs at everything he says.
Groucho was awesome all the way till he passed away. When each Marx brothers passed away the world lost a great man and comedian. Harpo then Chico and then Groucho. Chico died first.
Interesting to hear a man born in the late 19th century's take on feminism. Wonder what his reaction would be to today's current social state?
Maybe these social justice warriors would learn a thing or two from Groucho!🥸
This was but a the most gentle and subtle reminder of how grand he was on screen.
Groucho is a unique genius and lives on in the hearts and minds of those who loved him
I loved seeing Groucho chuckle at the very last second of the show! 🥸
A little suprisisng that Groucho needed that guy with the cue card for the song. He was legitimately a lifelong Gilbert and Sullivan afficionado, and he knew most of their plays and songs by heart.
Probably more for Cavett.
I never realized it, but "Welcome Back Carter" may very well have been based on this Broadway production about the Marx Brothers.
You will probably enjoy this, Mr Kotter as Groucho.
I was unable to send you the link. You can get it by typing......Gabe Kaplan as Groucho.....on RUclips.
I think Craig Ferguson studied Groucho's sense of humor and witt!
holy cow! the kid playing chico really looks like wut chico would look like as his younger self!
I thought Shelly Winters was playing parts where the character was supposed to be annoying. Guess i was wrong.
He was ok at all
"Had I'd been killed that day, I would've been more prudent."

I just realized that Welcome back Kotter was a riff off the Marx's brothers.🤦🏾🤣🤣🤣
I don't remember Groucho Marx but when he did the Dick cavett show he made you have a laugh
@ 21:39 Groucho sets up the young "Harpo" with the beginning of the classic Mirror scene by walking around him but the kid did not mirror him. Groucho immediately gave up on him. That kid missed the chance of a lifetime...……...
I thought he was just imitating his father walking around one of his customers to estimate the size of the pants he was going to make for him.
Than the maker we still have Dick Cavett.
Tcast of Minnie's Boy's on Broadway!!? Are where toda?
Don’t shoot me I’m only the piano player
AMAZING ARCHIVES ON YOUR YOU TUBE CHANNEL - THANK YOU!!!!
I'll waste no time to watch this.
I feel like a natural woman!
I love this man.
The first cut around 5:51 .. was that an intentional cut cause it was getting too political?
Commercial break, that's why they sang when they came back.
Thanks!
Long live communism and freedom
Wow he couldn’t keep it in his pants
What am I missing? Groucho seems annoying and not funny.
watch Horse Feathers
He does seem a little tetchy and irritated here.
