There will never be another! He was amazing and always left me with tears of laughter. Why do you think Carson had him on the show so often.......everyone walked out with a smile on their face.
Buddy was just great. And to say that the poem he wrote about his parents, which he recites at the end of the show, is moving would be an understatement of the first degree.
That was a delightful interview. It was interesting to see the real Buddy Hacket who was obviously intelligent and charming rather than just his comedic persona. It’s wonderful these old interviews can now be seen.
I love this. Honest stuff is always the best. Dick allowed his guests to open up and converse about what drove them to do what they do. No insults, clowning or upstaging. Buddy was a very smart and decent man who made the world a little better by just being himself. Bravo.
Buddy Hackett was truly one of the great comedians of all time and his stories and his poetry that he made about his mother and father were absolutely brilliant well-thought-out and brilliantly delivered thank you Buddy Hackett may you rest in peace and the angels are glad you're with them now thank you buddy for all the joy and happiness and laughter that you brought everyone you are a tremendous human being and whatever mistakes you may have made in life I'm sure that God will find that your sense of humor filled so many with a good feeling that it couldn't be beat thank you Buddy Hackett
Poignant Buddy Hackett moment. I'm impressed. Mr. Hackett had the candor and his own custom flavor of wisdom that was so disarming I'll never stop missing him. A self-made American talent. God bless your soul Mr. Hackett you are sorely missed.
Richard Alva Cavett (/ˈkævɪt/; born November 19, 1936) is an American television personality, comedian and former talk show host. He appeared regularly on nationally broadcast television in the United States for five decades, from the 1960s through the 2000s.
The long form television interview is a dying art. Cavett may have been the best at it. The standard 10-12 minute late night interview can be entertaining, but it fails to let you get to know the guest at all. Cavett was a genius at dropping a topic suggestion then letting the guest take it from there. He seemed to be particularly enamored of comedians and some of his best shows were letting funny people be themselves instead of doing the act.
Cavett wrote for both Parr and Carson. he was on opposite Carson for a few years in the late 60's on ABC, when that network was mired in 3rd place and did not even have true national exposure. I read somewhere Carson said if Cavett had a network, " he would bury me+. Not sure if that was true, but Cavett did have a combination of Parr/Carson in him, very intellectual, but still very funny as well.
Guy Fawkes Totally agree. When I watch him and Carson do their interviews with comedians and actors you see, feel, and hear the admiration and respect they had for their guests. When it comes to the “other five guys” (I won’t mention their names because someone will be offended) all I see is either immaturity, boredom, or competition. This format will soon gone if it isn’t already.
@m williams. Believe it or not it’s 2023 and I live in Palm Beach County, Florida. There’s an ABC affiliate in Martin County north of us and in Dade County two counties south of us and if I didn’t have a cable hook up or if a person didn’t have a dish or internet there’s still no broadcast access to ABC television here because there’s no ABC affiliate in Palm Beach County one of the most developed counties in the country. I find that odd.
Wow !! that was a whole different side of Buddy Hackett, one that I had never seen. He was obviously very intelligent, as well as honest. He should have showcased that more. He could have been a very good, as well as successful, actor. RIP Buddy Dick Cavett did his usual good job - just asking the occasional question, then "stepping aside", and letting the guest have the spotlight, thereby drawing out the guest, and creating an excellent show.
For great interviews, Cavett was the man. Olivier, Brando, Hepburn and scores of others were guided by Dick into superb revelations about their crafts. Actors directors, writers, musicians, politicians, all covered by Cavett.
Love Buddy always for being so funny & he’s so smart & honest. 1st thing he mentions he can’t or won’t discipline himself to be healthy. Amazing how many extremely intelligent ppl are in the same boat. 🙄
This shows how very intelligent the great comedians have to be to do what they do. Buddy is such a well spoken and intelligent performer which is completely opposite of the comedy persona he portrays. All the greats are intelligent like this such as Robin Williams, Jackie Mason, Eddy Murphy and many , many others
The Canadian film, " Babe, " aka " Hey Babe " and " Rise and shine " was made in 1979 with Hackett and a 12 year old Yasmine Bleeth in her first movie role.
He had a very dirty blue act in Vegas and some others. He is not any hero in my club. Im watching this because i saw him some old movies that i recall- mad mad mad world.
Dick was one of the best interviewers in a time of great interviewers on TV. He was well informed and had a great sense of humor to balance his intellectual skills. Buddy was always one of my favorites because, like a lot of comedians, he was very intelligent but hid it in his stage facade.
Funny story. I’ve never seen Buddy Hackett’s face until today. Beyond the voice of the seagull in the little mermaid, I just haven’t been exposed to his work. So, I see Scuddle’s human face for the first time and I says to myself, i says “gee, he sure looks like Lou Costello. I wonder if they’s related.” So I google it, and find out that they are not related BUT he did play Lou Costello in a made-for-tv biopic in the late 70s. How bout that
My dad once played golf with Buddy Hackett. My dad tried to tell him a joke, but he said, "No, no, I've heard them all." My dad said he was a nice guy.
Buddy Hackett was my dads favorite comic. I know back then Buddy was rude and racist.. look he played a native american in a movie. that was those days. I was adopted I am Native American, my dad was German. His family was German. He loved Buddy. I remember being a kid in 1980 and his aunts spoke only German. My dad was a great man. he looked passed his hertiage to love Buddy Hackett. Yes his jokes can be now sexist. as a country.. I hope we can except all races as my father did for this native american and culture and I love buddy hackett jokes.
Jupiter Le Grand That is not untrue. But he also knew how to draw out the serious side of normally comic persons. Carson just let Hackett do his stuff, which gave us all a lot of great laughs, but we also didn’t learn anything about Buddy Hackett
Buddy was one of the greatest! He was also my "Birthday Buddy" on August 31st.
I still drink a toast to him and the memories on that day.
Buddy Hackett was a real mensch. We don't see much of that today.
Buddy was not only a comic genius, but also a genius off stage, with immense intelligence, and a superior IQ.
I believe that in order to be a successful comedian one has to be, at least, close to genius.
Dido
What an incredible talent was Buddy Hacket !!! A man with a heart and soul rarely seen in today’s world!!
First of all, Gary - yes I agree! The man was a genius! Simple yet dirty, but in a childish way!
@Big Bill O'Reilly And you, sir. Stop being a complete moron. Also, try correct grammar. Maybe some punctuation could help. ;)
@@PyrozPlayground Of course you are the MORON! The other fellow was just speaking from his heart.
There will never be another! He was amazing and always left me with tears of laughter. Why do you think Carson had him on the show so often.......everyone walked out with a smile on their face.
Beautiful poem. Nice to see this side of him. Thank you.
Buddy was just great.

Well said and well put !!
I've been watching old shows with Buddy Hackett for a few days. He is so funny. RIP

PS; Love The Audience really helps too.:-)
I loved him ❤️❤️
Always loved Buddy. Superb and moving interview. Though his role wasn't big, he was great in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".
wish I could go
get a coffee with
Buddy...
always loved him 💘
I'm so glad I quit watching tv 40 years ago. This was the kind of talent and heart that was prevalent in the entertainment industry way back when.
Omigawd, that was beautiful!
I'm crying.
Thanx so so so much, Archy, for sharing.

Two guys full of class. Thank you for posting.
beautiful poem
This is a real gem to see the real man. What a great guy.

Buddy was gruff, but what a sensitive soul.
That’s the second time I’ve listened to him recite that beautiful poem about his parents.
A great story teller.
When TV was worth watching.
Often imitated, never duplicated..There was NOBODY like Buddy..
@Madden Declan Did not know that..Thank you!!

Buddy Hackett was one of a kind.
What a wonderful poem
Dick Cavett was a great interviewer and here we get to see Buddy Hacket unlike any other talk show.
He had a very dirty blue act in Vegas and some others. He is not any hero in my club. Im watching this because i saw him some old movies that i recall- mad mad mad world.
All Sorts candy licorice ...mmmmm...who can resist a few 🍬🍭
Absolutely riveting
He was also very good in The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm 1962.
And The Music Man!
@@ROGER2095 How right you are ! He sings "Shipoopi" in "The Music Man" and it's a wonderfully fun number ! What a great talent !

I ALLWAYS LIKE HIS PERSONALITY. HARDLY ANY OF MOVIES MENTION TODAY. I LIKE SEEING HIM IN MUSCLE BEACH PARTY. 1964
This is 5 star stuff.
Buddy ❤️
So honest... i just made a movie and it's a stinker. Things you would never hear today 😆
My dad once played golf with Buddy Hackett. My dad tried to tell him a joke, but he said, "No, no, I've heard them all." My dad said he was a nice guy.
He is funnier with Johnny Carson, but that poem stops you, and gives pause to the greater humanity behind a great man.
Lovely poem. I didn't know Buddy Hackett had it in him. I was half expecting a dirty punch line at the end.
Hackett on Cavett show. Hackett on Cavett talking about his weight. Jack Leonard was part of Hackett show.
He stayed at his 1st show for 21 years. He did show. On TV. . Band Box.1952. This is what he was doing before he became famous.
Light and lively theme song. Very good
Leonard Bernstein wrote that music for his operetta: "Candide."
There's really just not enough videos available of Buddy.
His poetry book has some really pretty pieces. So sweet.
Great guy
He looked fine then.
Buddy. Hackett.

He wasn't racist, you dummy.
"Racist"? That's quite the accusation without even an example.
Cavett really knew how to step on a punchline or deflate a story. What a tool.
Jupiter Le Grand That is not untrue. But he also knew how to draw out the serious side of normally comic persons. Carson just let Hackett do his stuff, which gave us all a lot of great laughs, but we also didn’t learn anything about Buddy Hackett
@@benoitpellet1657 As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !
Cavett liked to match wits, but he often got in the way, and sometimes was overmatched.
Part of Dick's genius was drawing out the serious side of the most incorrigible comedians. Okay, well, except Groucho!
Lovely poem - who knew
