For those of you not aware, the Taliban destroyed the statues as they said the government at the time would rather use money to look after the statues rather than look after people who were struggling financially. Up to you whether you believe that or not.
Before the Taliban came to power the first time in 1996, there was a bloody civil war with lots of ethnic tension between sunnis and the shia hazaras. The hazara's had their own mujahideen group, but the weren't seen as "real" muslims tot he sunnis, so the hazara mujahideen fought a lot agaisnt the taliban and NA during the civil war. It can be speculated that part of the reason of the destruction was because of the tension between taliban and the hazara mujahideen at the time. A Taliban spokesperson said the official reason for their destruction was because foreign countries offered to fix/repair the buddha's for the taliban but they got mad that foreigners would rather pay money to restore a non living object while people were starving to death
The Buddha statues were destroyed throughout the history for centuries ,, the reason .. religion , politics . By the way , There's is a lying Giant Buddha still need to be Unearthed 🤗
It is true. The West were not interested in the kids starving to death but were willing to spend millions or more restoring statues, which is why those statues were blown up.
It was while I was doing archaeology in the Midlands of England in the 1990's that I came to hear about the Taliban. I was reading an archaeology magazine article about this tribe in Afghanistan who were destroying the archaeological heritage. Their heritage because that is what it is. That is history whether they like it or not. I thought why do that when they could turn those sites in to even bigger tourist attractions and raise big revenue.
Man I wish Afghanistan was a secular state, a lot of our countries problems could be solved. But people have become more and more religious because of all the “Free” madrassas in Pakistan, and within a generation peoples mentality has changed.
They blew it up because the Weedt was willing to spend $millions on restoring these statues but weren't prepared to help millions of kids starving to death in Afghanistan.
I wish you and Ben would not give people the thumbs up, as in some cultures that is the equivalent of giving the middle finger in the West! So, be careful how you express your OK!
Well you’ve gotta think about it from a political POV, if the Taliban wants to stay in power and be able to negotiate with other countries on the world stage, it’s in their best interest to treat foreigners well and ensure their safety. Obviously this goes out the window when breaking their laws, but visitors should respect the laws of any country that they’re in regardless of how arbitrary those rules might seem, following rules is a good way of ensuring your safety!
