This is by far my favorite game franchise of all time and I love watching people experience this series for their first time. really hope you enjoy this game
When this game came out I was 11 years old and it was without a doubt my favorite game and Have always loved it. I hope you love it as much as much as we all did when we first played it.
I played this game back in 2005 when KH2 came out on PS2. I got a PS2 and my dad said nick you can pick out 5 games. So I picked out kingdom hearts 1-2 bc of the disney characters, Star Wars battlefront 1-2, and ratchet and clank up your arsenal. When I started up KH1 I was AMAZED by the soundtrack, the cinematics, and how fun the gameplay was. I instantly knew that it would be my favorite video game series of all time
I remember the first commercial I ever saw for Kingdom Hearts, but that was before I had a PS2 and mostly played Digimon games so I wasn’t all that interested. I only got into the series around late 2011 after getting a PS3 and Ghostbusters the video game. I’m actually glad I waited so long to try them out because I would’ve gone stark crazy along with everyone else waiting for KH3. Heck I can’t wait for KH5 now. What I love about Kingdom Hearts is that it combines the drama, romance, and action of anime with the magic, humor, and fun of Disney.
Kingdom Hearts was originally released for the PS2 worldwide in 2002. It was re-released in December 2002 exclusively in Japan as Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix, a version with rebalancing and lots of all new additional content. In 2013 Kingdom Hearts Final Mix was finally released globally in a PS3 port entitled Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix that used HD remastered graphics and included Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories; this version was later combined with the 2.5 HD Remix collection to create the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix collection for PS4, and then later XBOX One, PC and eventually Switch, which is the version you're playing here. After the original Kingdom Hearts, the direct sequel was Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. Being created for the much less powerful mobile game system, the gameplay was reworked and made something wholly unique. This game was later given a 3D HD remaster that made it a kind of hybrid of the original game and the more familiar Kingdom Hearts gameplay, named Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, and was included in the 1.5 HD Remix collections. This is the second game in the collection you will need to play. In 2005 Kingdom Hearts II released in 2005. Despite being the second 'main' title, it is actually the third game in the series and Re:CoM is an important story connecting the two. It also received an enhanced Final Mix version with major rebalancing changes and lots of added content that was initially Japanese exclusive, but later was ported to other systems as the main part of the 2.5 Remix releases. After Kingdom Hearts II, three more smaller games on mobile platforms were released that continue (or expand) the universe of Kingdom Hearts; Coded, an early episodic Japan-exclusive mobile phone game released in 2008 that was later (2010) released as a Nintendo DS Game titled Re:coded and is actually a sequel (of sorts) to KH2 (it picks up where KH2 ends with a different focus); 358/2 Days for the DS, which essentially runs concurrently with KH Re:CoM and released in 2009; and Birth By Sleep, released originally for the PSP in 2010 which received the same Final Mix enhanced release treatment as KH1&2, but which is actually a prequel set years before KH1. These are the six 'games' on the 1.5 + 2.5 Mix--four enhanced HD remasters of the original games (Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix), and two movies consisting of HD cutscenes and occasional text box narration of the events of the other two games (Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded). For some reason, 358/2 Days is placed before KH2 in the 'game' list, which has contributed to an argument in the best order to experience the series. Some argue to go with what the devs did here and watch 358/2 Days movie before playing KH2, while others argue for release order. I personally recommend release order, but both choices have different merits and drawbacks (non-spoiler explanation: release order preserves the sense of confusion and wonder you're intended to feel as more information in revealed in KH2, while watching 358/2 Days first spoils some of the early mysteries of KH2 but gives you a much greater appreciation for and emotional attachment to many of the new characters introduced in or focused on in KH2. In the end, it's your call. BBS and re: Coded movie should be last, but their order with each other doesn't matter. I hope this isn't too overwhelming, just intended to give some quick background on the six 'games' included in the opening KH Mix and advising on how to play them as well as explaining the recurring 'Final Mix' descriptor. Regardless, I really hope you enjoy your journey through Kingdom Hearts as much as I did, and I look forward to watching you take it.
