I’m Protestant but enjoy your videos! This reminds me of an article I read years ago by a Jewish man who said he missed seeing nuns out and about in their habits. Even though he didn’t share their faith he found their presence comforting. They just made the world a better place.

Your experience is an excellent reason why sisters should have an obvious sign that they are members of a religious order! Habits don't intimidate, they educate. 🙏💖

Amen! You are absolutely right, being present in an atmosphere young people are comfortable in. My parish has "Theology on Tap," and simply being in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where the faith is talked about has already grabbed the attention of a friend I invited. We are in our twenties and she has not gone to Mass in years. After attending Theology on Tap she expressed wanting to go to Mass again and we started going together. A plant was seeded and I continue to pray the Holy Spirit will fill her heart. God Bless you and your ministry. Cheers!

darien chalecki - my church in San Francisco is also novitiate for Dominicans with seminary packed with Dominicans nearby. These guys are surprisingly talented and musical with experience in video and presentation and in dealing with public. I often thought they should present play-dance-music in golden gate park once a year. What a waste not to. Thus kind of thing from Christian groups and seminarians are rather common in Europe. Why should Americans be so ....... how to say it?

In the Depression, the parish hosted teen dances for its members. The 21st century is not about people coming to the church (they aren't), it's about going where the people are (at the mall, in the bar, in the clubs). If King David could dance and Jesus could invite himself into the homes of sinners for dinner (it was a different time), having a beer and maybe even a dance might be the way to go.
Pre-evangelization need not be on church grounds. Some missionaries provide food and the like--with no faith requirement. Others might be at the local pub or on a college campus, wearing the outward sign of their set-apart-in-service vocation, though traveling in pairs might be safer.

Yes. As a diocesan priest , I use clergyman naturally from my first day as a deacon; I had many occasions of hearing confessions in the metro/metro station, shopping centres, restaurants... Sometimes I also gave the Anointment of the Sick in cases of serious illness. The clerical / religious habit is a wonderful pastoral resource. Blessings from Rio de Janeiro.

Brother Casey’s experiences remind me of what I went through as a rather devout 21 year old Roman Catholic pursuing an acting career in the Hollywood of the late 70s and 80s. To say I was both revered (as a type of lab experiment) and ostracized (surprisingly by certain members of the Church) was puzzling and mysterious to me. I was aware God was always present but I did question my faith profoundly since things were not going as planned.

Br. Casey I understand fully, as I wear my clerical collar all the time no matter where I go, all over the city, stores, and when traveling, well when travel was an option prior to Covid 19, and I get the same reactions. I am asked if I'm real lol, I get laughed at a great deal to, but then meet someone who's just lost their husband and asked for prayer! I get told "we don't see you boys out of the Church in public". I do community outreach, and I think as you do we need to be out there as the ministry of presence alone gets people thinking about their life, and the choices they have or about to make. It is really woth it to go out as Jesus did soeaking with everyone!!! Many blessings!!!!

The morning after my baptism in 2007 God's message to me was "be still - know I'm God". A good, necessary reminder. I think sometimes we try too hard to do things... when instead we can simply be. Live our lives, in love, faith, gratitude and trust, and let our presence be the example of those qualities God embodies through us.
I dress very much like a hippie, and I've been called everything from Hobbit to Moses. I think my most surprising time was when I was called Robin Hood. That was unexpected.
Sometimes we just have to live truthfully to our experience and answer people's queries as best as we can. Even if the attitudes and questions come out of left field. Goes back to that old saying "let go and let God".
Be sincere, and God's light will shine through.
    God bless you Fr Casey.

  • @theresemartin3075
    @theresemartin3075 6 лет назад +1

Brother Casey, I'm glad you had a great break!!! You are right... I think seeing a Brother, Priest, Sister I'm habit invites people to ask questions...I know people are thirsting for God even more than we realize...I worked in a job where I dealt with customers all day. Due to the location of my business, many of my clients were Priests and religious. I became quite friendly with them and many gave me small gifts of religious statues, pictures, medals, all of which I treasured. I placed them near my computer, which I thought was inconspicuous..During the course of my career, I had so many people, honestly most of who I never thought had any spiritual inclinations ( I guess that's why we shouldn't judge or assume..) ask me questions about my faith and asked me to pray for them. I had one woman who was Jewish and told me she wanted to become Catholic after a visit to the Holy Land ...she described the Stations of the Cross too me in detail and as she did she cried her eyes out saying she felt the pain Jesus experienced. I have never my life had that kind of experience ..I have never seen such faith and absolute understanding of the Passion of Christ as I had seen in this woman! I asked her why she never converted but she was married to a devout Jewish man who recently had passed, and if she converted couldn't be buried in the Jewish cemetery..In that case, she was a witness to me in faith! Another Jewish woman, who used to always come in aggitated all the time, asked to see me privately one day. I thought it was going to be a compliant but she said she just found out she had terminal cancer. She said she didn't know how to pray, and she knew from my religious items that I was Catholic and asked if I would pray for her. We became friendly and one day after a bad prognosis and said she wished her mother was still alive to help her, I asked her if it would offend her if I gave her a Rosary Bracelet, I explained it to her and said our Blessed Mother would be with her. She wore it till she died. I think it took me years what a blessed time that had been and that people we would never think even cared about us..are observing us and looking for an opportunity to talk about God. I think it is all our responsibility to invite but sometimes the way we live itself is an invitation for a conversation. There is nothing at all special about me, so if God could work through me, He can work through anyone. We just need to be open for the opportunity! Invite and be the invitation!
Brother Casey, thank you for all you do! God is raising up amazing men, such as yourself, for a time such as this! You are in my prayers
everyday! You are going to be an amazing Priest!
    Peace and God bless you!🌹

Welcome back and glad you had a good time. I have found that just being out in public in my habit creates opportunities to reach people I might never have met. Of course, you get strange looks but you also get people that will come up to you and ask questions which open avenues to evangelize. Usually, the first question is am I from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA which is a Trappist Monastery. Then I get to explain I'm, not a Roman Catholic but rather a Protestant Lay-Monk from a Monastery in Vancouver, WA and the conversation continues from there. Anyway it's good to have you back!

It is a wonderful thing for those seeking a "zen" experience to discover that it is available in Christianity as well: Christian yoga and meditation; the monastery with its daily cycle of prayer, work and silence; lay (aka Secular, Third, or Oblates) orders of Franciscans, Dominicans, Benedictines, etc., single or married; Lectio Divina, and so on.

If I recall my teachings, going into those uncomfortable places was the point of sending out the twelve. Be among the people, answer their questions, give them the word as they are ready to accept it. If they are not, shake the dust of the town from your feet and continue on. In essence, I think you have distilled (pardon the pun) the idea of evangelical ministry down to what it is supposed to be. Just be there, among the people, as God made you, not some persona in a "costume".
I wonder if that young woman remembered anything of the conversation, or what preceded it.

Not sure why I never followed into the ministry because I was, always have been, and always will be a very spiritual person. I imagine if I met you in a bar I would have a very long and interesting chat with you. I actually was born and raised as a Methodist , taught Sunday/Hebrew school with a Jewish friend of mine and officiated at the funeral of a family friend who was Catholic but not practicing and he wanted no clergy there.
I think we could have a very interesting conversation.

This is an excellent idea. I used to cook at a bar, until the Spirit convicted me, yet while I was there I preached much to my coworkers and I was sober and walking into sanctity. I eventually had to "walk out" so to speak, but they love me so and I love them so; but sin seperated me from them...
Which brings another point, we should not share drinking with those who are chained to the sin of alchohol addiction and even worse using it to facilitate ignorance of God unto debauchery. We should meet them just as Casey suggests, except that we should be sober because that is an example this world desperately needs and we are called to set an example for them.
For the sake of the weaker brothers and sisters Casey, have the same fun with them as you spiritually minister, but show them it can be done sober.
I agree that sometimes we plant a seed and/or water the seed.
"I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."
Do we share one reward as One? Or is it specifying that though we are one we each are rewarded according to our labor? The reward is not payment to the labourer but rather the reward is increase in that which is labored upon. Thus the reward is the natural result of labor, that is to say the supernatural result of planting and watering; and this passage is emphasizing that as One our good works come together so that we each do have success in our labors of ministry, but as part in One in God but alone we are each nothing.
    Wow.
Let us appreciate each other bretheren. Much love. Christ be to all.

I work everyday with declared atheists. I'm a plasterer. Building sites are full of people that just don't ever think on religion. I've declared myself a beliver in God. JESUS CHRIST And Catholic. Laugh at me first. Then questions. And refutations about God's existence. Luckily I've been studying Christian and Catholic apologetics and I'm strong in my faith. I understand what you go through when you meet people that just don't live or think religion.

Your clothing appearance story gave me a question to ask, Do you think the change in habits to civilian clothes, for many of our Women's religious order, has help contribute to the diminishing of Religious/Catholic respect, vocations, conversion, and/or keeping Catholics in their faith?

I think that it is certainly one of many reasons. It would be unwise, though, to say that it is the only or even most significant reason. For me, the biggest reason is simply outside of their control which is that the society changed around them. Most of these congregations are active orders that used to work in hospitals, schools, and orphanages. These professions have become more specialized, and for a woman in the 21st century, you can do these things without being a religious sister. 100 years ago, the only way that a women could be in a position of leadership and be active in this way was to be a sister; now, this is not the case, and women can do this great work AND be married with children.

Breaking In The Habit Thanks. I wasn't saying it is the only or most significant reason. I was careful to say "help contribute". I see an order of Franciscan Nuns at Church who dress in civilian clothes. I miss seeing them in their habits. I think the habits serve as great/special Holy Reminder.

Some of the holiest people I have met in the parishes are the religious women, with or without the habit. In today's secularized society, the habit does take on a new meaning, different from when it was "normative" in the world, back in the 1960s and earlier.

Dude? Seriously? Clergy and religious have been visiting and “been present” in these popular places for centuries... Its new to you - not to everyone!

    • @BreakingInTheHabit
      @BreakingInTheHabit  6 лет назад +10

With all due respect, it may have occurred before, and no doubt it was the friars doing it, but it has not been the norm for centuries. Sure, we had a guy who would go to bars in the 70s and meet prostitutes to help them out of their situation. Extraordinary work. But probably one of only a handful of people doing it in the world. Are there people who go to bars in their religious garb as I suggest? Of course. I've been doing it for 5 years. But the number of priests and nuns doing so has to be under 1%.

Here in Europe most medieval founded villages and towns were built in a triangulated juxtaposition of church, market cross and tavern!
Nearly all the religious orders founded in the 19C had active apostolates to the poor necessitating visits to “where” they frequented or worked eg the brothels and the taverns and the Worker Priest movement in early 20C France went further actually working alongside them (not in brothels or taverns mind)! Most parochial clergy are familiar faces known to the establishments within their parishes where the people go and in the UK and Ireland clergy nearly always go to the Wake following a funeral in the local pub!
What is sadly true and regrettable since the 1960’s is the lack of clerical and religious visibility generally. Many clergy and religious forgo the cassock and habit - some even the collar - and outside of church are often indistinguishable from the laity and secular folk. Cars too have significantly impacted on visibility of either, its rare to see a cleric or religious on public transport, bicycles or walking the streets these days.
Perhaps in the US things are different, not quite the culture of other localized community focuses other than churches? In Europe, public squares, cafes and yes, taverns still play a part in their community as places to meet - even the clergy.
Last year in Chicago I visited a couple of pubs - thinking it usual - and my clerical and religious companions enjoyed the novelty! I blessed newly-weds, engaged couples and individuals and we were even bought a round by a lapsed Catholic! I intend to do the same next month visiting the city... perhaps we’ll cross paths?(!)

No, I did not consider this, nor do I think anyone in my family would have wanted me to. For me to wear a tuxedo or fancy clothes, something I haven't done for a decade, would have been more distractive to them.

Is it as strange as you actually suggesting people leave the catholic church because of the scandals? How are you becoming a priest and actually suggesting people leave the church you’re going to serve? That you know Jesus started. Praying for you severely!

Hi Emily, I'm sorry that this is what you got from my video because it is not what I actually said. In the wake of the crisis, I was speaking to people who had already left, affirming that I understood why they did. I was not going to sit there and berate them when they already saw me as someone with no credibility. Doing so, demanding that they return to the Church and stay in a place where they were abused, is not effective pastoral care and would have served to further push people away. If you watch the video again, you will see that my emphasis was on compassion and understanding, hoping to show them that I was not leaving, that there was something truly good about our Church, and that if they wanted to return, if they wanted to stay, I would be there with them. This is a very different message from suggesting that people leave, and I would ask that you not misrepresent my words like this.
