  • After getting our bearing in Joshua Tree National Park, it was time to get the Outback Wilderness out on the trail and see just how capable this thing really is. There aren't too many trails in Joshua Tree, so we had to do a little digging to see what we could find. Old Dale Road was what we decided on, and we didn't know just how tricky things would get as we started making our way through the sandy wash. With all the hype surrounding the Outback Wilderness, it was time to take up a mountain and find out if the hype was real!

    I've got to say, this is one of the most enjoyable videos I've watched in quite some time. I mean this with all the love in the world, but you're the most affable, self-deprecating and funny knucklehead in this space. Your wife is lovely and the two of you together can't help but make me smile. I'll look forward to you being at 100,000 subscribers within a year.

    Just picked up a '24 Outback Wilderness a couple of weeks ago after owning my first-ever Outback for almost three years (it was a 2020 Premium, but I really wanted the Wilderness, so I decided to go ahead and take the plunge, since Subaru has a really good trade-in program). I came across your channel as I looked for videos from other owners to see how they tricked theirs out. I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos. Thank you for producing and sharing them. It looks like y'all have insane amounts of fun. :)

    Yeah, the thing with the Subaru AWD vs the Jeep 4x4 is as you said, staying on the gas. The Jeep is locked and loaded and will just do it or not. The Subaru may get to an obstacle where it looses traction on a tire or resistance on a tire from an obstacle, and it may take two or three seconds for the torque solution to figure itself out. Usually less, but usually also as soon as it figures out a solution and moves a few inches it has a completely different problem with completely different needs. So basically it is thinking and experimenting whereas the Jeep is just sort of doing it. There are areas where it seems you would need a bump thinking jeep wise, because the car stopped. But with the Subaru you aren't really stuck or don't really need a bump until you give it the beans and give it a chance to figure out what tires to slow and what tires will get the remaining torque. It is a lossy ineloquent substitute for 4 wheel drive, but then again your Subaru is probably more comfortable, gets better gas mileage, and likely hauls more gear and eats up the bumps better. It's just a different experience that MOST of the time I think is worthwhile. Theres going to be many places only the Jeep (or Bronco or Whatever) can go. But the Subaru will surprise you and is a lot of fun, and can cross America in relative comfort and economy compared to other solutions. Databyter

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 года назад +1

      We totally agree with what you said. The Subaru has its perks, but it’s just not hungry for rocks and obstacles like jeep or bronco. Driving across the country was a breeze though!

    • @mattvogelsong8460
      @mattvogelsong8460 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. We drive our outback on the beaches here in de and it's very soft. You have to give it gas and go. I've seen so many subarus get stuck out there because as soon as they start spinning they panic and brake. You need to let the system detect slippage for it to do its thing. We have never had an issue. I usually air down to about 22 for sand. I envy you guys for having these awesome overland trails.

    • @OneBoot1987
      @OneBoot1987 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, all the videos I've seen on the wilderness thus far indicate that you need to stay on throttle when you feel like it's futile to do so. Also, the deep snow/mud setting allows more wheel spin (which is probably terrifying coming from a Jeep). Spinning is how the system figures out what to do.

      @@roamingwithjosh good video. I did this trail with my Wife back in 2017 in my Forester XT and had a a similar experience as you and your Wife. The transmission speed stall is something I don’t experience in my Honda Passport. It just crawls through with no hiccups or needing time to think. I did Fins N Things in my Honda Passport 🤣, all 9 miles too! But one thing that it doesn’t have is a following. Subaru marketing is superb and that’ll give you channel a lot of success. I appreciate your honesty about the wildernesses capabilities. The footage of the beginning of the trail where the axles were getting crossed up on relatively flat terrain brought back those memories of when I first started on my overland journey (even though, no one called it that back then). Although the CVT is the Achilles heel, any plans on getting a torque locker or Cusco LSD?

      @GATOROC1 2 года назад

      We have a JLUR on 35's and just picked up a white OBW last month. The OBW is a blast to drive and has a really nice ride, while being fairly capable off road. For daily driving purposes and general off road exploring in the Rockies where we live, I would MUCH rather drive the Subi than the JL. Don't get me wrong, if I'm going to do some technical trails and some rock crawling here in CO or at Moab, the JL is a no-brainer, but for 85-90% of the exploring we do, the OBW rides better off road and has plenty of power as well. This is our first Subi, and we will most likely have one for years to come.

    Nice finding others with comperable rigs!! Just built up a 2021 Crosstrek Sport .. lifted it 2" .. Toyo all terrains III's and a skid plate up front. Went with the Crosstrek as it's 500 lbs lighter and 14" shorter then the Outback and I'm single, make a differance .. have done 3 trips to Death Valley and one trip to Moab so far. My Toyo's are one size larger so with the lift I have 12" at the rear pumpkin! I air down to 12/15 lbs .. usually for sand. In the rocky sections turn traction control 'OFF' until you get slippage .. then try Xmode .. I don't like X mode as it cut power when you need the momentum going uphill .. down hill it works decent! You gotta use momentum with the Subies .. that's what I'm finding out. Did a trail in DV that I wouldn't do with my other rig because I thought it too tough .. The Trek handled it easily .. one reason is the weight .. it's 1000 lbs lighter then my Ford. Google (Al Maurine Ford Explorer) .. Now I have ti figure out when and how I can do this trip! Thanks 🤠
