Yup, I use things like this as a litmus test on women. My mom is always trying to tell me to buy new things, and she's dead broke. Seriously, why would I take financial advice from someone who's broke and can't fund her retirement without my dad.
A couple of years ago I bought a '99 volvo s70 with 200k miles on it. Other than a broken spark plug, I have not had any issues with it and I'm nearing the 300k mark soon. Best €1000 I ever spent.
I still remember my mom listening to Dave Ramsey talking about a guy that saved enough to buy a new car with cash, test drove it and decided he'd rather have the $40k, got in hi 80's VW Rabbit and invested the money. By the time the car had depreciated to $1700 he had somewhere in the 100 thousands in his account.
Surprised the rabbit has not evaporated into rust, fluid film and routine inspections can prevent this outcome, but most did not have owners who cared.
This guy has some serious self control to have a car like that while making 6 figures. Respect to him. The fact the wife even felt the need to call into something petty like this says a lot about her.

For real. She just wants a new car for the status of it to show off to her girlfriends. I've seen it from all of my friends and my brother in law who get newborns and next thing I know they pull up in a new luxury car. I'm like bro, your baby is going to mess up this car. Use the beater, don't drive like a maniac, and then when the baby is grown a bit more, they start going to school and now you actually need to carry around more shit...then get a new car. The couple in the video already have a rav4...that's perfect for a newborn with space and a car seat, etc. I tried to explain it to my sister after I saw their 100k BMW pull up to no avail...she literally said "that audi was 10 years old, we needed a new car and we went with a BMW for more space". I was like "what the fuck are you on? The audi you guys had before objectively has more space than the BMW you just got...and why a BMW? What's wrong with a forestor that will last forever?" ...our family loves Subaru cars since they drive really well in snow
In my neck of the woods the vehicles rot (road salt) to a point where they are not safe, or financially sound to repair. I would never buy a new car because of depreciation. I would also buy the used car outright if possible at the time.

She is right in this situation. The hosts were delusional. Check out how a 98 accord performs in a crash test compared to any car of recent years. A Buick or a ford for 15 - 20k $ used is so much safer than a 98 Accord it is unreal.
Exactly, not respecting the husbands sound decision, thinking they know better, so they go to "a higher authority" in her mind on the topic to use to her advantage.
A very smart comment. I didn't even think about it this way. But if my wife did the same aka. ask another man she would no longer be my wife. And I would oblige her in her choice.
She heard what she wants to hear. Two cars? Why thank you. She should really be grateful for her husband making all the good financial decisions for the household.
Not to be argumentative here. There are probably a ton of details missing about the 1998 car and their financial habits. I seriously doubt he makes ALL of the financial decisions and that without his ‘guidance’ she would be in a world of hurt financially. Helpfully they work together and have both adopted good financial habits.
I’m a firm believer in buying a quality car and holding it (current daily drive is my 2008 Lexus GX470 with 165K miles which has been near flawless), and I can see the safety issue with a new baby where you don’t want to her to be stranded on a freeway or backroad somewhere. They should get a 3-5 year old Camry or Accord (or small SUV from Toyota or Honda) and call it a day. Have it checked out by a mechanic of course, but typically hard to go wrong with those brands.
Yeah, I bought my first car 37 years ago, $300, it still works fine. Don't NEED another one. I've got about $4000 in it over all that time. And that will do basically anything you need to do from setting points to pulling the engine.

That’s a very blanket statement that does not define a safety standard. Also telling her to just drive slow and she’s fine doesn’t control other people on the road running a red light or being drunk and hitting you. The crumple zones of newer cars are night and day different in safety to a car made over 20 years ago.

That's not quite true. The overall structure of vehicles has become a lot more rigid than it was in the past. Just watch some crash tests if you don't believe me.
@DeadNoob451 According to most safety experts, the most effective safety device in a vehicle is the seat belt as it restrains occupants during a crash, preventing them from being ejected and significantly reducing the risk of serious injury; making it the primary defense against accidents.

Its a really nice example, good paint, decent interior, not beat up, no rust, so i see no reason to sell it as long as it stays comfortable and useful. Its safe, comfortable, economical, and it was cheap. I can do all the maintenance myself, and most of the repairs when needed. I have a spare truck that i can drive if and when the Buick needs repaired, so im keeping it until it becomes more expensive to fix than to buy another $1800 car. I like my truck, but its a toy. Its there when I need it but I dont depend on it and its not very much of an expense. My friends and family want me to buy a new car so I can save on gas. The Buick gets 27-29 mpg on the highway. A new Corolla would definitely be much better than that but not enough to justify spending $28k! Besides, theres something about driving on air shocks while listening to rock and roll cassettes with the seat leaned back that you cant get with a new Toyota lol.

I do hate the safety argument. If you want your kids to be super safe in a car, buy a great car seat. Have a mechanic do a once over the anchor points and seat belt mechanisms. Get them serviced or fixed if they need it. There's your safety right there. A properly installed car seat does not rely on the car's safety features beyond anchor points and seat belts. If you're worried about whether you've installed the seat right, I believe some fire departments can inspect those? Not 100% sure, but I know many communities have a specialist floating around somewhere.

Ever since my husband replaced our '08 VW's AC compressor (is that right? idk, he is so savvy!) by himself! I am ok with oldies. Plus, they have more parts available, newer cars have so much authorized repair BS. Amazing vehicle, when we don't have kids we can fool around in it. Need an SUV at some point, since three carseats cannot fit in our VW, but we're looking at older SUVs and making sure their issues are stuff we can take care of ourself. Just gotta watch out for those rusty frames, he has a car that really was toast because the rust was bad on the frame, and not just surface stuff. We doing cheap stuff until kids are moved out so they don't feel like cheap stuff is beneath them (and by cheap I don't mean the most sh*t, but not to get our fun sports cars or restored classics until they move out).
Here's a thought on the "safety" of older cars vs. newer cars: I owned a 90 Honda Accord. In 2015 (25-year old car, no air bags), I was literally knocked off a 65-mph highway and halfway across the median by an idiot in a pickup truck. When everything stopped, I simply unbuckled, opened the door, got out, and walked away without a bruise or scratch. I drive an 18-wheeler cross-country (Million Mile Safe Driver), and I see a lot of car crashes, both during and after. I've seen brand-new vehicles get turned into pieces so small you could pick up everything but the engine and transmission by hand and put it into a dumpster. The "latest" is not necessarily the "greatest". And all those computerized safety bells and whistles aren't going to save you, no matter what the salesman said.
Get a complete detail and new, preferably fitted, seat covers, some new floor mats, and maybe steering wheel and dash covers. Have the car painted, or at least de-dinged, as well. Wait, also, until the nesting and post partem issues have resolved. (Set a date to start car shopping for after you expect them to be gone, and if you itch again, look at your calendar.) If you still want to replace the old car after both riding in it prettied up and any hormonal motivations calming down, the cosmetic improvements will help raise the selling value.
New cars are definitely way more safe than old cars even from 25 years ago. I think her analysis is valid but the 2008 Toyota is probably a significantly safer than the Honda, so so maybe she should drive that with the kid.

I personally think if she wants to greatly impact the life of her child, put 30k you would spend on a new car into a college fund for 18 years and that kid will be able to go to Harvard if they want to. The best safety invention is installed in the Honda. It has seatbelts. The rest of the new "safety features" have had little impact on injury.

I drive a 2002 Buick Lesabre and its a good car. No reason to sell it. The fuel mileage is respectable for a 20 year old car and its still fairly dependable.
The 98 Honda doesn't have an anchor so she's not completely wrong that a newer car has more safety features

And there’s an EMT up thread that said the exact opposite of you.
@@BlueDauntless The EMT was specifically comparing small sedans versus large pickups and SUVs. That's not an age comparison, that's a mass comparison.
I have a 97 rav4, 360k miles. Keep it and keep moving forward
New cars are definitely way more safe than old cars even from 25 years ago. I think her analysis is valid but the 2008 Toyota is probably a significantly safer than the Honda, so so maybe she should drive that with the kid.
Exactly if there were to be a crash between a 98 accord and a 08 rav4 I know what car I'd prefer to be in and its not going to be the 98 honda.
If they had debt and were making way less, she would have lost the argument . I love it when women say “we need a new car because the safety is outdated for the baby”. When she was a baby her parents car wasn’t up to 2022 standards yet she survived . I had a 1999 accord and I remember even back then it passed safety standards years before it’s time.

Even without debt, you have other financial priorities to put extra money towards.
@@Ka_Gg I mean that's literally what the conversation is about. Why else would someone want to or not want to stick with a 1998 car? The question is do we upgrade and spend money upgrading, or continue to use what we have. Obviously the woman's motivation for upgrading is to have something newer and more safe for the baby. If they had a million dollars in the bank I'm sure it wouldn't be q conversation. I personally think if she wants to greatly impact the life of her child, put 30k you would spend on a new car into a college fund for 18 years and that kid will be able to go to Harvard if they want to. Getting into a car accident, in any vehicle is going to be very bad for a small child. Airbags don't help them because they're too small.
Without knowing a lot more of the specifics of his Honda i.e. what kind of real condition it is in - my gut says to leave the money in the bank or whatever and just keep driving both the Honda & the Toyota. Were that a Ford and a GM product - nope.
Having a baby regardless and using it as an excuse to purchase different is wrong on to many levels.
Have some different relatives on both sides of the family who did this specifically and every single time there were major regrets later as after having a child they found out in the real world how expensive it really is in multiple ways!
